From yesterday afternoon to this afternoon, I am attending the (overnight) monthly O.M.I. retreat at Sheung Shui, after which I hope to go to nearby Lo Wu women's prison to hand in a number of items for inmates (IDD cards, money for radios, dictionaries, Bibles, text books etc .... will take about an hour of filling in forms and waiting for forms to be processed).

Readings for Feast of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael

Tobit 12 (Raphael): When Tobit's banquet was finished, Tobit wanted to thank Raphael for all his help. Only then did Raphael tell Tobit and Tobias that he was an angel sent by God to help them. "I am Raphael, one of the 7 angels who stand ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Never tire of giving God thanks. And never tire of helping the poor." Raphael farewelled them, rose in the air, and left them. They praised and thanked God for all he had done for them.
Dear God, thank you for all your love, all your blessings

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!"
Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day
Recording

Revelation 12 (Michael): Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon and his angels.
Michael won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the serpent, known as the Devil or Satan, was hurled down to earth. His angels were hurled down with him. The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman - those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus.
Jesus, may your holy angels protect us from Satan

Recording

Luke 1 (Gabriel): In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb
Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

Notice how the names Raphael, Michael and Gabriel all end in "el" which means "God"!
When we are sick we can ask Raphael ("Medicine of God") to pray for us. When we are in danger, we can ask Michael ("Who is like God") to pray for us. When we feel powerless and weak, we can ask Gabriel ("God is my strength) to pray for us.

Tobit 11: When Tobias returned home, his parents  were full of joy. Tobias followed Raphael's instructions and applied the fish gall to his blind father's eyes. Tobias then peeled away a filmy skin from the eyes and his father Tobit was able to see again. Tobit and Tobias  joyfully praised God. Tobit welcomed Sarah and held a banquet for all his friends.
Dear God, please give sight to the blind people I know, just as you gave back sight to Tobit long ago

My recording of this reading

Psalm 91:
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Romans 12.14-21: Pray for people who are unkind to you. Be kind to them. Rejoice with those who are happy. Console people who are sad. Treat everyone with kindness. Never be condescending. Make real friends with the poor. Do all you can to live at peace with everyone. Resist evil and conquer it with good.
Jesus, I pray for (.. name ...) who was unkind to me

Listen

John 12.42-46: Many people believed in Jesus, even some important people, but they did not admit it, through fear of being expelled from the prayer hall. They put honor from people before the honor that comes from God. Jesus said openly "I, the light, have come into the world, so that whoever believes in me, need not stay in the dark any more"
Jesus, true Light of the world, please help me put honor from you before honor from people

Sun Sep 27

Somewhere around 1am yesterday morning I received a call from Yau Ma Tei police station to say that one of the homeless men staying at the Alhambra Building had been arrested an hour or so ago .... but could be released if I brought $1,500 to the police station to pay a fine for him. Half awake I asked the officer if this could wait till the sun rose (so to speak). Officer said need to come now or man will be in detention till Monday. So I went and gave the money to the man, surrounded as he was by about 6 officers ....obviously a dangerous character who needed close supervision .... with another 6 officers looking on. Man paid fine and was soon allowed to leave. As we walked together I asked him what was his heinous crime. It was indeed really serious, shocking ... the following statement contains graphic details, be warned: his offence? Four years ago, when he was riding a bicycle in Sham Shui Po, during the day time, he was given a fine for not having a bell on his bike ... and he failed to pay the fine!

c.f. readings for Sunday 26

Ezekiel 12-18: Ezekiel spoke God's message for the false prophets: "You have misled my people. You have not bothered to protect my people". Ezekiel also called on the people to stop their idolatry. He reminded them how to follow the Lord: A good person is law-abiding and honest; a good person oppresses no one, never steals; a good person gives food and clothing to the poor. "God takes no delight in the death of a sinner. God hopes the sinner will renounce wickedness and live."
Lord, please help me to avoid evil ..... and do more good

My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Listen

Philippians 1.27 - 2.4: Avoid anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the Good News of Christ. Be united in your convictions, and united in your love. There must be no competition among you, no conceit. Everyone should be self-effacing. Always regard others as better than yourself. Put others interests before your own.
Jesus, help me say "no" to anything unworthy of your Good News

 Listen

Matthew 21.28-32: Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people, "What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, "My boy, you go and work in the vineyard today." He answered, "I will not go," but afterwards thought better of it and went. The man then went and said the same thing to the second who answered, "Certainly, sir," but did not go. Which of the two did the father's will?' 'The first' they said. Jesus said to them, 'I tell you solemnly, tax collectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you, a pattern of true righteousness, but you did not believe him, and yet the tax collectors and prostitutes did. Even after seeing that, you refused to think better of it and believe in him.'

Sat Sep 26

Yesterday morning I came away happy from the High Court after a kind judge gave a young man from Malaysia, on a drug trafficking charge, a most generous reduction for his participation in my anti-drug campaign.

And in the afternoon I also came away happy from the Indonesian Consulate after a one hour meeting with very   friendly staff, discussing how the NGO I belong to - Voice for Prisoners - can work with the Consulate to help warn the 160,000+ Indonesian domestic helpers in HK never, never, never to accept a parcel from anyone ...even if asked by your grandmother! The women know about "parcels" but they continue to be deceived by "friends" and "boyfriends" ... a new victim arrested not long ago

Tobit 9-10: Tobias arranged that Raphael go to Gabael to collect the silver left by Tobit many years before. Gabael returned with Raphael to Raguel's house and joined the wedding feast. Realising that his parents would be worried about him, Tobias left for home as soon as the wedding feast was over. Raguel gave Tobias and Sarah half his possessions and prayed that he would see their children some day. A happy and grateful Tobias thanked God for all the blessings of his journey to Media
Dear God, thank you for all the blessings of my life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Listen

Romans 12.9-13: Do not let your love be superficial, but sincerely prefer good to evil. Have a family love for each other, and a profound respect for each other. Persevere in your love for the Lord and your service of the Lord. Hope will make you cheerful. Do not give up when trials come. Keep on praying. Help people who are in need. Make hospitality your special care
Jesus, please help me grow in love. Help me love you and other people a bit better

Listen

John 12.23-33: Jesus said to his apostles Andrew and Philip "Now the time has come for me to be glorified.  Unless a wheat grain goes into the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain. But if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Now sentence is being passed on this world. Now Satan is to be defeated. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all people to myself"
By these words, Jesus indicated the kind of death he would die

Jesus, lifted up on the Cross, you are the Saviour of the world

A fleeing Taliban fighter, desperate for water, was plodding through the Afghan desert when he saw something far  off in the distance. Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the mirage, only to find a very frail little Jewish man standing at a small  makeshift display rack, selling neckties. The Taliban fighter asked, "Do you have water?" The old man replied, "I have no water.  Would you like to buy a tie? They are only $5." The Taliban shouted hysterically, "Idiot Infidel!  I do not need such an overpriced western adornment.  I spit on your ties.  I need water!" "Sorry, I have none, just ties - pure silk, and only five dollars." "Pahh!  A curse on your ties!  I should wrap one around your scrawny little neck and choke the life out of you, but I must conserve my energy and find water!" "Okay," said the little old Jewish man. "It does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie from me, or that you hate me, threaten my life, and call me Infidel.  I will show you that I am bigger than any of that. If you continue over that hill to the east for about two kilometres, you will find a restaurant. It has the finest food and all the ice-cold water you need.  Go in peace." Cursing him again, the desperate Taliban staggered away over the hill. Several hours later he crawled back, almost dead, and gasped, "They won't let me in without a tie".

At the High Court yesterday morning a kind judge deducted 11 months from the sentence of an African man on a drug trafficking charge .... because of his participation in my anti-drug campaign. Thank you Jesus!

From the High Court I went to the Gingko Restaurant at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei for the monthly lunch with homeless people now staying at Alhambra. Many thanks to Fr Jojo and group for again kindly sponsoring the meal. After the meal I helped arrange accommodation for a local man recently released from detention.

Tobit 8: Before Tobias went to bed with Sarah, he remembered what Raphael had said. Tobias put some of the fish's heart and liver on burning incense. The smell of the fish made Asmodeus flee. Tobias with Sarah then prayed to the Lord: "You are blessed O God of our fathers. Let the heavens and all creatures bless you, you who created Adam and Eve. I now take Sarah as my wife not for any lustful reason, but out of true love. Please have pity on us and bring us to old age together." Then they went to bed. Meanwhile Raguel, who feared Tobias would die, prepared a secret grave. But when Raguel sent a maid to the room of Tobias and Sarah the maid found they were alive and sleeping peacefully. Then Raguel too praised God: "Thank you, my God, for making me happy. What I feared has not happened." The next day Raguel prepared the customary 14 day wedding feast.
Dear God, thank you for the many times when we could say "What I feared has not happened"

My recording of this reading

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Listen

Romans 12.1-2: I beg you, trust in God's mercy, and worship him in a spiritual way, not just in an external way. Offer your whole life to him as a holy sacrifice. Do not blindly follow the fashions of the world. Instead, let your behavior change, fashioned by your enlightened mind. This is the way to discover the will of God, the way to know what God wants us to do
Jesus, help me give more time to things that are important, less time to things not so important

Listen

John 12.12-19: People who had gone to Jerusalem for the Passover, heard that Jesus was coming down to Jerusalem from Bethany. They used palm branches as they  went out to meet him, shouting "Hosanna! Blessings on the King of Israel who comes in the name of the Lord". Jesus rode a young donkey down the hill, just as the Scriptures had predicted: "Daughter of Sion, behold! Your king is coming, mounted on the colt of a donkey". Some religious leaders said to each other "Look, there is nothing you can do. The whole world is running after him"
Jesus, humbly entering Jerusalem on a donkey, may you be known and welcomed and praised by the whole world

Romans 10-11:
If your lips confess that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. How wonderful is God!  How great his wisdom and knowledge. John 12.1-8: Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, for a dinner at  the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet. Then she wiped his feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to betray Jesus, said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it. Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial. Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone"
Jesus, please help people in charge of money not to steal

After yesterday's film screening, followed by much time with reporters for interviews with some of the homeless people, followed by time to help a homeless man get a room ... I went to McDonald's (where else after watching "I'm Livin' It"?!) for a drink with MercyHK volunteer Emily... during which we boosted a post to MercyHK's FB page (MercyHK), spending HK$1,000 ... with the aim of lobbying the govt to do more for homeless people. While we were working, I mentioned the famous quote from Hudson Taylor: "God's work, done in God's way, will not lack resources". About 10 minutes later a lady came to our table, put down two $500 notes saying "please use this for the poor; I remember when you said Mass at St Anthony's Church some years ago". Jesus, please bless that kind lady!

My policy: if they are innocent: try to help them prove their innocence; if they are guilty, try to help them get the least possible sentence.

Tobit 5-6: Tobit told Tobias to find a trustworthy man to go with him to Media.  Tobias found Raphael, but Tobias did not know Raphael was an angel. On the first night of their journey, Tobias and Raphael caught a large fish.  Raphael told Tobias to keep the gall, liver and heart of the fish. Raphael explained that the gall would cure the blindness of Tobit, and that the liver and heart would drive away the demon Asmodeus.
Dear God, thank you for the help we receive from your angels

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

Romans 10.1-4: I have a really great love for the Jews. I pray to God for them to be saved. They have a strong belief in God, but their zeal is misguided. They can't see that friendship with God is a gift from God, not just a matter of external practices. Jesus, some people have mixed up ideas about religion (.. Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses). Help them know the truth as you revealed it
Listen

John 11.46-54: The religious leaders had a meeting to decide what to do about Jesus. They said "If this man keeps on doing miracles, everyone will follow him. Then the Romans will see him as a threat, and they will wipe out our nation". The main  leader said "It is better for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be destroyed". These words had more meaning than the leader realized, since Jesus was to die not just for the nation, but for the whole world. Since the leaders wanted to kill him, Jesus went to a remote area near the desert, and stayed there with his disciples

Tues Sep 22

I spent yesterday afternoon at the Alhambra Building, giving out invitations to all 46 homeless people now in rooms rented by MercyHK ( ...a job I began two days ago) for the screening of "I'm Livin' It" 麦路人 tomorrow. People I know who have seen the movie say it is really good ... and really moving.

A most important article: Chinese people inside and outside China were insulted in the past .... and this helps explain Xi Jinping's "expansionism"

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic:  CE's Policy Address ... & McDonald's! It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Tobias 4: Tobit said to his son Tobias: "When I die give me an honorable burial. Always honor your mother. When she dies, bury her at my side. Be faithful to the Lord all your days. Always be willing to help poor people. Give your bread to those who are hungry and your clothes to those who are naked. Ask advice of every wise person. Bless the Lord God in everything.  Beg him to guide your ways and bring your paths and purposes to a successful conclusion. Avoid all loose conduct. Do to no one what you would not want done to you. Choose a wife from our tribe, from our kin in Media. Go to Media, to my friend Gabael. Many years ago I left 10 talents of silver with him. This money is yours."
Dear God,  please guide me and help me to do what is right

My recording of this reading

Psalm 86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer for I am poor and needy. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart
for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant and save your handmaid's son.

Dear Lord, thank you for all your love

Romans 9.1-5: There is a great sorrow in my heart. It's with me day and night. It's the situation of the Jewish people, how they will not accept the Anointed One. I am willing to do anything to help them accept Jesus. I am willing to undergo the greatest suffering if that would help them believe. They are my nation, my family. They have been so blessed by God. From their flesh and blood came Christ, who is God
Jesus, God-made-flesh, I pray with Paul that the Jewish people will believe in you

Listen

John 11.1-44: Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha lived in the village of Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent a message to Jesus "Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time  Jesus and his disciples arrived in Bethany,
Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha said to Jesus "If you had been here, my brother would not have died". Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha "Where have you put him?"  Jesus cried as he went to the tomb. The tomb was a cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the stone away". Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus said "Unwrap him and let him go free"

Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Please give eternal life to my friend (....name...) who died recently

Reflection on the above readings: Jesus did not like funerals. He spoilt funerals (in a good sense). Someday we hope he will also spoil our remains whether they be bones or ashes .... to show that our funerals were not the last word.

Last night when I went to a local canteen for a meal, there were only 5 other customers in the shop, all men .... and none of them wearing a shirt! They laughed when I asked them publicly with a smile "Do I need to take my shirt off?!"
