At 9pm last night I had a call from Yau Ma Tei police station: a
homeless man, just arrested for I'm not sure what, asking I come and pay
$500 bail so could be released. I got home around 11pm. Two nights ago a similar
call from Tsim Sha Tsui police station: a homeless man asking I come and pay
$150 bail. Which I did. While waiting for the man last night I met a lady whose
husband had just been arrested. She was there to pay bail for him. I gave her a
bit to help. The two of them have been sleeping under a bridge for several
months. See my article in today's Ming Pao -

New letter of Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
1. "FRATELLI TUTTI". With these words, Saint Francis of Assisi addressed his brothers and sisters and proposed to them a way of life marked by the flavour of the Gospel. Of the counsels Francis offered, I would like to select the one in which he calls for a love that transcends the barriers of geography and distance, and declares blessed all those who love their brother "as much when he is far away from him as when he is with him". In his simple and direct way, Saint Francis expressed the essence of a fraternal openness that allows us to acknowledge, appreciate and love each person, regardless of physical proximity, regardless of where he or she was born or lives.

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: CE's Policy Address ... Dear Carrie. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Judith
2-4: Nebuchadnezzar summoned his top general Holofernes
and gave him a huge army to punish the nations
that had not joined him for the war against Arphaxad. Nation after nation, people after people, fell to the sword of
Holofernes.
Some places made peace with Holofernes
by giving him all their possessions and then becoming slaves of
Nebuchadnezzar, worshipping Nebuchadnezzar as a god.
As the army of Holofernes approached Israel,
the Israelites fasted and prayed to God for help.
They also blocked the mountain passes to delay Holofernes' advance.
Dear God, please help nations which have been invaded by other nations
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
96: O sing a new song to the Lord.
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day.
Tell among the nations his glory,
and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple.
Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad.
Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
all the trees of the forest shout for joy.
Everyone and everything,
give the Lord glory and honor.
Lord, you are our Creator. We
love and praise you

my Father's house.
I am going now to prepare a place for you. I am the Way, the Truth and the
Life.
No one comes to the Father except through me".

When Nebuchadnezzar was king of the
Assyrians,
he fought a war with King Arphaxad and his supporting nations. Nebuchadnezzar sent a message to the nations
near Assyria
to help him fight Arphaxad. But the peoples of those places ignored
Nebuchadnezzar.
They thought victory was beyond him. But Nebuchadnezzar was in fact victorious

Psalm
95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord.
Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks.
With songs let us praise the Lord.
A mighty God is the Lord,
a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth.
The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it,
and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us.
For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.

absent-mindedly applied the cream ... thinking of the homily at Mass etc ... I
noticed that the cream seemed to be a bit different. Sure was different. It was
toothpaste! (from same size tube as cream).

Isaiah
5: My friend
had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. He planted choice vines in it and expected
it to produce good grapes. But it produced only sour grapes. That
vineyard is Israel. Its owner is the Lord. That chosen plant is the
people of Judah. The Lord expected the people of Israel to produce justice. But
those people have produced only bloodshed and injustice. Those people have no
time to think about the Lord. They have no interest in what he has done for
them. So they are consigning themselves to ruin. The vineyard will be trampled
on and become a waste. Invaders will attack Israel. The people of Israel will be
taken into exile. All because they rejected the Lord.
"I am the true vine. My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me
that bears no fruit he cuts away. Every branch that does bear fruit
he prunes to make it bear even more" - Jesus (John 15.1-2)
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
80: O God, the
nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy
temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of
our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O
Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the
guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our
situation now please give peace and healing to everyone and everything
in our history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your
strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save
us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.
Lord, please heal any
problems in my family tree

4.4-9: I want

everyone. If there is anything you need, with prayer and thanksgiving ask God
for it. Fill your minds with everything
that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure,
everything that is worthwhile. Then the God of peace will be with you.
Jesus, please fill my
mind with good things

John
15.1-8: At the meal, Jesus said to his
disciples "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Each branch
in me that bears no fruit, he cuts off. Each branch that does bear fruit, he
prunes to make it bear even more fruit. As a branch cannot bear fruit by itself,
but must remain part of the vine, so you can't bear fruit unless you
remain in me. Cut off from me, you can do nothing. If you remain in me, and my
words are alive in your heart, you can ask for any good thing and you will get
it. It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit"
Jesus, please help me stay close to you. Help me

c.f. Feast of the Guardian Angels
Exodus
23: The Lord says
this: "I myself will send an angel before
you to guard you as you go and to bring you to the
place that I have prepared. Give him reverence and listen to all that he says.
Offer him no defiance; he would not pardon such a fault, for my name is in him. If
you listen carefully to his voice and do all that I say, I shall be enemy to
your enemies, foe to your foes. My angel will go before you."
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
91: He who dwells in the
shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I
trust". The
Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You
will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon
you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he
commanded his angels to
keep you safe in all your ways.
Recording

Acts
12: When
Peter was rescued from prison, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John
Mark where people were praying for him, thinking he was still in prison. A
servant girl opened the door when Peter knocked. She ran inside to tell the
group that Peter was at the door. The group did not believe Peter was
there. One of them said "it
must be his angel".
Eventually they opened the door and Peter described how an angel had rescued him
from prison.
Recording

Matthew 18.1: The disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, "I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven."
Reflection on the above readings:
I
recommend this little prayer which I've said each morning and night for 60
years:
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's
love commits me here. Ever this day (night) be at my side, to light and guard,
to rule and guide. Amen

Wed Sep 30
After the monthly O.M.I. retreat finished yesterday at lunch time at Sheung Shui, I went to nearby Lo Wu women's prison for an hour or more of handing in items (IDD cards, textbooks, Bibles etc) for prisoners. Items for each prisoner require a form to be filled in and processed.
Back in Jordan/Yau Ma Tei there were many jobs to attend to: a man just out of prison needing accommodation (having been recommended by a Salvation Army social worker); a single mother asylum seeker needing help to shift home (I found 4 homeless people to help her); an elderly couple whose psychologically-damaged son is on death row in Shenzhen for drug trafficking ...asking for help .... I had a meal with them and copied many documents; a homeless person at the Alhambra Building needing new accommodation after being asked to leave by the landlady for various reasons; needy people needing a meal, a phone card; email and phone requests from lawyers for mitigation letters for High Court cases today (that I didn't know were on today). No trouble sleeping last night.

Tobit 12:
When Tobit's banquet was finished,
Tobit wanted to thank Raphael for all his help. Only then did Raphael tell Tobit
and Tobias
that he was an angel sent by God to help them. "I am Raphael, one of the 7
angels who stand ever ready
to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Never tire of giving God thanks.
And never tire of helping the poor."
Raphael farewelled them, rose in the air, and left them.
They praised and thanked God for all he had done for them.

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning,
and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad.
For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength.
You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our

right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness,
proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.

13.1-15: While Jesus and his disciples were eating a

slave, began to wash the disciples' feet, wiping them with the towel
he was wearing. After washing their feet he said to them
"You are right in calling me Master and Lord. If I, then, the
Lord and Master, have humbly served you, you should humbly serve one
another. I have given you an example so that you may
copy what I have done for you".
Jesus, please help us to serve other people
