Yesterday morning I went to two
bookstores ... with a swim at Kowloon Park pool on the way (see
below).
Nearly all of the afternoon and part of the early evening were spent arranging
accommodation for homeless people. MercyHK is now renting 33 rooms for 61
people!

Pope Francis - Fratelli
Tutti:
8. It is my desire that, in this our time, by
acknowledging the dignity of each human person, we can contribute to the rebirth
of a universal aspiration to fraternity. Fraternity between all men and
women. "Here we have a splendid secret that shows us how to dream and to
turn our life into a wonderful adventure. No one can face life in isolation. We
need a community that supports and helps us, in which we can help one another to
keep looking ahead. How important it is to dream together. By ourselves, we risk
seeing mirages, things that are not there. Dreams, on the other hand, are built
together". Let us dream, then, as a single human family, as fellow
travelers sharing the same flesh, as children of the same earth which is our
common home, each of us bringing the richness of his or her beliefs and
convictions, each of us with his or her own voice, brothers and sisters all.

Judith
9: Judith put ashes on her head, bowed with her
face to the ground,
and prayed urgently to God: "Lord God, help of the oppressed, support
of the weak,
please hear my prayer and protect your people Israel."

Psalm
101: My song is of mercy and justice.
I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless
heart.
I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud
looks,
these will not be my friends.
People who are good and do good,
these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to

Corinthians 3.5-15:
Apollos and I are servants who brought the
faith to you. I did the planting, Apollos did the watering, but God made
things grow. You are God's building. By God's grace,
I laid the foundation, the only foundation there can be: Jesus
Christ. On that foundation you can build a house with
good or poor materials.
At the end of your life, your building will be judged by God
Jesus, you are the foundation of my life. Help

John
15.18 - 16.1:
At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples
"If you belonged to the world, the world would be friendly to you.
But because my choice withdrew you from the world, therefore the world is
unfriendly to you. Just as I am hated and persecuted, so you also
will be hated and persecuted. As the Scripture says 'They hated me
for no reason'. I am telling you these things now, so that when they happen, your
faith will not be shaken.
Jesus, if people are
unfriendly because I am a Christian, please give me strength and courage

provided accommodation for a 40 year old woman in poor health who had been
sleeping at McDonald's. We then arranged for a Salvation Army social worker and

improved greatly and she has found a part-time job in a restaurant (...she found

7. As I was writing this letter, the
Covid-19 pandemic unexpectedly erupted, exposing our false securities. Aside
from the different ways that various countries responded to the crisis, their
inability to work together became quite evident.
For all our hyper-connectivity, we witnessed a fragmentation that made it more
difficult to resolve problems that affect us all. Anyone who thinks that the
only lesson to be learned was the need to improve what we were already doing, or
to refine existing systems and regulations, is denying reality.

Corinthians
1.18 - 2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense
for some people. But for us it is God's power to save.
While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks
require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews
an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on
philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has
seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that
God has prepared for those who love him

6. The
following pages do not claim to offer a complete teaching on fraternal love, but
rather to consider its universal scope, its openness to every man and woman. I
offer this social Encyclical as a modest contribution to continued reflection,
in the hope that in the face of present-day attempts to eliminate or ignore
others, we may prove capable of responding with a
new vision of fraternity and social friendship that will not remain at
the level of words. Although I have written it from the Christian convictions
that inspire and sustain me, I have sought to make this reflection an invitation
to dialogue among all people of good will.

Isaiah
25: On Mount
Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all
peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines. On this mountain he
will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you
are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the
poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in the
world today
My

Psalm
23: The Lord is my
shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where
he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping
spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should
walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your
crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You
have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have
anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall
follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for
ever and ever.
Thank you, Lord, for

Matthew
22.1-10: Jesus said
to the chief priests and elders of the people: The kingdom of heaven may be
compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding. He sent his servants
to call those who had been invited, but they would not come. Next he sent some
more servants. "Tell those who have been invited" he said "that I
have my banquet all prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered,
everything is ready. Come to the wedding." But they were not interested:
one went off to his farm, another to his business, and the rest seized his
servants, maltreated them and killed them. The king was furious. He dispatched
his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town. Then he said to his
servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to be
unworthy, go to the crossroads in the town and invite everyone you can find to
the wedding." So these servants went out on to the roads and collected
together everyone they could find, bad and good alike; and
the wedding hall was filled with guests.

Reflection on the above readings:
Sometimes people in a group are not welcoming to new members. Don't want any more. But God's policy is "always room for one more" ..."the more the merrier"...."a full house"

5. Issues of human fraternity and social
friendship have always been a concern of mine. In recent years, I have spoken of
them repeatedly and in different settings. In this Encyclical, I
have sought to bring together many of those statements and to situate them in a
broader context of reflection. In the preparation of Laudato
Si, I had a source of inspiration in my brother Bartholomew, the
Orthodox Patriarch, who has spoken forcefully of our need to care for creation.
In this case, I have felt particularly encouraged by the Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb,
whom I met in Abu Dhabi, where we declared that "God has created all human
beings equal in rights, duties and dignity, and has called them to live together
as brothers and sisters". This was no mere diplomatic gesture, but a
reflection born of dialogue and common commitment. The present Encyclical takes
up and develops some of the great themes raised in the Document that we both
signed. I have also incorporated, along with my own thoughts, a number of
letters, documents and considerations that I have received from many individuals
and groups throughout the world.

Holofernes seized control of Bethulia's water supply springs,
thinking that thirst would force the Israelites to surrender. For 34 days the siege continued, until the

Pope Francis - Fratelli
Tutti:
4. Francis did not wage a war of words aimed at imposing doctrines; he simply
spread the love of God. He understood that "God is love and those who abide
in love abide in God". In this way, he became a father to all and inspired
the vision of a fraternal society. Indeed, "only the man who approaches
others, not to draw them into his own life, but to help them become ever more
fully themselves, can truly be called a father". In the world of that
time, bristling with watchtowers and defensive walls, cities were a theatre of
brutal wars between powerful families, even as poverty was spreading through the
countryside. Yet there Francis was able
to welcome true peace into his heart and free himself of the desire to wield
power over others. He became one of the poor and sought to live in
harmony with all. Francis has inspired these pages.

WITHOUT BORDERS
3. There is an episode in the life of Saint Francis that shows his openness of heart, which knew no bounds and transcended differences of origin, nationality, colour or religion. It was his visit to Sultan Malik-el-Kamil, in Egypt, which entailed considerable hardship, given Francis' poverty, his scarce resources, the great distances to be traveled and their differences of language, culture and religion. That journey, undertaken at the time of the Crusades, further demonstrated the breadth and grandeur of his love, which sought to embrace everyone. Francis' fidelity to his Lord was commensurate with his love for his brothers and sisters. Unconcerned for the hardships and dangers involved, Francis went to meet the Sultan with the same attitude that he instilled in his disciples: if they found themselves "among the Saracens and other nonbelievers", without renouncing their own identity they were not to "engage in arguments or disputes, but to be subject to every human creature for God's sake". In the context of the times, this was an extraordinary recommendation. We are impressed that some eight hundred years ago Saint Francis urged that all forms of hostility or conflict be avoided and that a humble and fraternal "subjection" be shown to those who did not share his faith.

2.
This saint (Francis) of fraternal love, simplicity and joy, who inspired me to
write the Encyclical Laudato
Si,
prompts me once more to
devote this new Encyclical to fraternity and social friendship.
Francis felt himself a brother to the sun, the sea and the wind, yet he knew
that he was even closer to those of his own flesh. Wherever
he went, he sowed seeds of peace and walked alongside the poor, the abandoned,
the infirm and the outcast, the least of his brothers and sisters.

c.f. readings for Feast of the Rosary
Genesis 3: A
creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and
first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why
they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake.
God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday
a member of the human race will defeat you."
God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came, and to dust you will
return." The first man's name was Adam (meaning
"man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning
"life").
Dear God, please help me
understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you
My
recording of this reading

Luke 1.46: My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.

Acts
1.12: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount
of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a
kilometer. They gathered
in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were
Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of
Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several
women, including
Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers.

Luke
1.26: In the sixth
month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of
Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named
Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed
by God. You
are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great
and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can
this happen since I am a virgin?" The
angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her
old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth month". "I am
the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done
for me". And the angel left her

Reflection on the above readings:
Many religions use beads to help pray. Beads help us to remember what we're doing. Beads help us to focus on praying ... even as we ride a bus or walk along the street. My own custom is to pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary at the start of each decade of the Rosary, and then for the 9 other beads to use words from the Bible readings of the day. So for today, the first decade might use a bead or two for each of these words: "the snake tempted them", "they disobeyed God", "Someday a member of the human race will defeat you", "from dust you came, to dust you will return", the first people were named "man" and "woman". Then the Glory be to the Father, then the "O my Jesus" prayer. Then to the next decade
