Esther
1: The kingdom of King Ahasuerus stretched from
India to Ethiopia.
Ahasuerus gave a banquet for all his leading
people.
But Queen Vashti refused to join the banquet. The king therefore decided to replace Vashti
as queen.
Dear God, please bless all

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south. Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.
Some people were prisoners in misery and
chains,
living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for
help.
He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness,
for he shatters the iron bars of prisons. Some people were sick on account of their
sins,
unable to eat, and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need.
He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love,
for the wonders he does for us.
Some people sailed to the sea in ships
and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need
and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love,
for the wonders he does for us. Whoever is wise should meditate on these
things
and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank
you Lord, for your rescuing love

Corinthians 11.20-26: Concerning the Lord's Supper, this is what I
received from the Lord and then taught you: On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus
took some bread, broke it and said "This is my body which will be
broken for you". After supper he took a cup and said "This
cup is the new covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink
it in memory of me". Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you
eat this bread and drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord

19.1-3: Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged.
The soldiers used thorns to make a
crown and pushed this into Jesus' head. They dressed him in a purple cloak and mocked
him saying

Reflection on the above readings: Scourging was done to half-kill criminals to hasten their death on a cross. Bible scholars contrast the evangelists one-line statement of the scourging of Jesus with graphic details that might have been done by a writer making up a story

14. These
are the new forms of cultural colonization. Let us not forget that "peoples
that abandon their tradition and, either from a craze to mimic others or to
foment violence, or from unpardonable negligence or apathy, allow others to rob
their very soul, end up losing not only their spiritual identity but also their
moral consistency and, in the end, their intellectual, economic and political
independence". One effective
way to weaken historical consciousness, critical thinking, the struggle for
justice and the processes of integration is to empty great words of their
meaning or to manipulate them. Nowadays, what do certain words like democracy,
freedom, justice or unity really mean? They have been bent and shaped to serve
as tools for domination, as meaningless tags that can be used to justify any
action.

Judith
14-16: At daybreak the Jews attacked the Assyrian
camp.
When the Assyrians realized that Holofernes was dead,
they panicked and fled. The Jews gave thanks to God for all that
Judith had done. Judith praised the God of Israel for rescuing
the Jews: "Lord you are great, you are glorious,
wonderfully strong, unconquerable.
May all peoples love and serve you."Dear

Psalm
106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right,
who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt,
they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them.
But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour,
God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.
O Lord, our God, please don't
let us forget your love

Corinthians
10.16 - 11.1: The cup that we bless is a communion with the
blood of Christ.
The bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. Avoid anything to do with idol worship.
It doesn't make sense to share in the table of the Lord and in the table
of demons. Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever
you do at all,
do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone. Try to
be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for your own advantage,
but for the advantage of others, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ

witness to the truth". After further questioning, Pilate said to the
leaders "I find no case against him, so how about I release him

Barabbas was a bandit

The end of historical consciousness:
13. As a result, there is a growing loss of the sense of history, which leads to even further breakup. A kind of "deconstructionism", whereby human freedom claims to create everything starting from zero, is making headway in today's culture. The one thing it leaves in its wake is the drive to limitless consumption and expressions of empty individualism. Concern about this led me to offer the young some advice. "If someone tells young people to ignore their history, to reject the experiences of their elders, to look down on the past and to look forward to a future that he himself holds out, doesn't it then become easy to draw them along so that they only do what he tells them? He needs the young to be shallow, uprooted and distrustful, so that they can trust only in his promises and act according to his plans. That is how various ideologies operate: they destroy (or deconstruct) all differences so that they can reign unopposed. To do so, however, they need young people who have no use for history, who spurn the spiritual and human riches inherited from past generations, and are ignorant of everything that came before them".

Isaiah
2: In the days
to come, the mountain of the Lord's Temple will be specially blessed. All
the nations will come to it and say: "Come, let us go up to the
mountain of the Lord, that he may teach us his ways so that we may walk in his
paths". When they learn the ways of the Lord, then the nations will hammer
their swords into ploughshares, their spears into sickles. Nation will not lift
sword against nation, there will be no more training for war. O House of Jacob,
come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!
Lord, please help world leaders do more for peace in our world

Psalm
98: Sing a new song to the
Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord
has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has
remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the
earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring
out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music.
Let the sea, the world and all peoples
acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring
out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth.
He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

Tutti:
12. "Opening up to the world" is
an expression that has been co-opted by the economic and financial sector and is
now used exclusively of openness to foreign interests or to the freedom of
economic powers to invest without obstacles or complications in all countries. Local
conflicts and disregard for the common good are exploited by the global economy
in order to impose a single cultural model. This culture unifies the
world, but divides persons and nations, for "as society becomes ever more
globalized, it makes us neighbours, but does not make us brothers". We
are more alone than ever in an increasingly massified world that promotes
individual interests and weakens the communitarian dimension of life. Indeed,
there are markets where individuals become mere consumers or bystanders. As a
rule, the advance of this kind of globalism strengthens the identity of the more
powerful, who can protect themselves, but it tends to diminish the identity of
the weaker and poorer regions, making them more vulnerable and dependent. In
this way, political life becomes increasingly fragile in the face of
transnational economic powers that operate with the principle of "divide
and conquer".

Judith
13: When the banquet was over at a late hour,
Judith was alone with Holofernes in his tent.
Holofernes lay drunk on his bed.
After praying to God for strength,
Judith used Holofernes' sword to cut off his head. She went outside and gave the head to her
maid.
Her maid put the head in her bag. Judith and her maid then left the camp
as they usually did when they went to pray early in the morning. They went straight to Bethulia and showed
Holofernes' head to the people. The people were overcome with joy
and praised God for what he had done by the hand of a woman.

Jesus in the face, saying "Don't speak to the leader like that".
Jesus replied "If I said something wrong, point it
out. But if there was nothing wrong with my words, why did you hit
me?" Meanwhile Peter was outside in the courtyard,
keeping warm by a fire. Three times he was asked by different people if he
was a disciple of Jesus. Three times he replied "I am not".

Tutti: (Commentary
by Bruce Duncan)
11. Our own days, however, seem to be showing signs of a certain regression. Ancient conflicts thought long buried are breaking out anew, while instances of a myopic, extremist, resentful and aggressive nationalism are on the rise. In some countries, a concept of popular and national unity influenced by various ideologies is creating new forms of selfishness and a loss of the social sense under the guise of defending national interests. Once more we are being reminded that "each new generation must take up the struggles and attainments of past generations, while setting its sights even higher. This is the path. Goodness, together with love, justice and solidarity, are not achieved once and for all; they have to be realized each day. It is not possible to settle for what was achieved in the past and complacently enjoy it, as if we could somehow disregard the fact that many of our brothers and sisters still endure situations that cry out for our attention".

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Jesus' words secured the freedom of his friends .... then he was secured by ropes
-------------------------
On the first day, God created the
dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at
anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of
twenty years." The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How
about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?" And God saw it
was good.
On the second day, God created the
monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh.
For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said,
"Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How
about I give you back ten like the dog did?" And God, again saw it was
good.
On the third day, God created the cow
and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and
suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family.
For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said,
"That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about
twenty and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed it was good.
On the fourth day, God created humans
and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give
you twenty years." But the humans said, "Only twenty years? Could you
possibly give us our twenty, the forty the cow gave back,
the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty,
okay?" "Okay," said God, "You asked for it."
So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy
ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family.
For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And
for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

SHATTERED DREAMS
10. For decades, it seemed that the world had learned a lesson from its many wars and disasters, and was slowly moving towards various forms of integration. For example, there was the dream of a united Europe, capable of acknowledging its shared roots and rejoicing in its rich diversity. We think of "the firm conviction of the founders of the European Union, who envisioned a future based on the capacity to work together in bridging divisions and in fostering peace and fellowship between all the peoples of this continent". There was also a growing desire for integration in Latin America, and several steps were taken in this direction. In some countries and regions, attempts at reconciliation and rapprochement proved fruitful, while others showed great promise.

Judith 11: Judith was very clever when she spoke to

She told him that the Jews would be abandoned by God

who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things,
renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and
love,
slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth
so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West,
so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his

the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels,

John 17.1-21: After saying many things to his disciples at the meal, Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed "Father, my time has come. Give eternal life to everyone you have entrusted to
me.
Eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have
sent.
I have glorified you on earth, and finished the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world existed.
Protect those you have given me. Protect them from Satan. Consecrate them in the
truth.
As you sent me into the world, so I am sending them into the world. May all my followers be united, so that the world will believe it was you who sent me"
Jesus, please protect our world from lies and
deception. Please bless people who witness to the truth in difficult
situations

4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Judith 10: Judith put on her most beautiful clothes and
jewelry.
Then she and her maid headed for the Assyrian camp. She told the Assyrian soldiers that she was
fleeing from Bethulia since it would soon be attacked. She said she wanted to give Holofernes some
important information. The soldiers took her to meet Holofernes.
Dear God, please give us the
courage of Judith
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
102: O Lord, listen to my
prayer in my distress.
Do not hide your face from me. For my days are
vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my
bread.
My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes
revile me.
Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will
endure for ever.
You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the
groans of the prisoners
and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do
not take me away before my time has come,
you whose days last from age to age.
Lord, please help people who
are in great distress

John
16.7-33:
Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I will leave you soon. After I go, I will send
the New Friend to you. The New Friend will teach you all about right and wrong.
The New Friend will help you know the truth about everything.
You are sad now because I am leaving you. But I will see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy. No one will be able to take that joy from you.
I have told you all these things so that you may find peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but be brave: I have conquered the world
Jesus, thank you for your peace, your joy, and your Holy Spirit

Reflection on the above readings: In these times of fake news and distortion of truth, we need the Holy Spirit of Truth more than ever. Which is why many Christians, as part of morning prayer, pray a prayer to the Holy Spirit, for guidance and help during the day
