Yesterday I visited several people at Siu Lam Psychiatric prison.
God bless all the inmates (especially those who have been there for decades
....and the staff (who indeed do a very special job with much patience and
kindness)
MercyHK's 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan had a record

55. I invite everyone to renewed hope, for
hope "speaks to us of something deeply rooted in every human heart,
independently of our circumstances and historical conditioning. Hope speaks to
us of a thirst, an aspiration, a longing for a life of fulfillment, a desire to
achieve great things, things that fill our heart and lift our spirit to lofty
realities like truth, goodness and beauty, justice and love. Hope
is bold; it can look beyond personal convenience, the petty securities and
compensations which limit our horizon, and it can open us up to grand ideals
that make life more beautiful and worthwhile". Let us
continue, then, to advance along the paths of hope.

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Policy Address - Thank you, Carrie! It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Proverbs
4-5: Acquire wisdom, never forget her.
Do not desert her. She will keep you safe. Wisdom is life to those who obtain her,
health for the entire body. Take no notice of a loose-living woman,
go nowhere near the door of her house. Drink the water of your own cistern,
fresh water from your own well. Find joy with the wife you married in your
youth,
let hers be the love that always holds you captive.
Dear Lord, please give married
people the wisdom to stay faithful to each other

Psalm
1: Happy the person who
avoids evil and evil entertainment.
Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a
person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of

person is on the Way of Life.
People who do evil are on the Way of
Death.
Dear

2.19-22:
In God's Church you are not foreigners. You

Matthew
10.17-42:
Jesus said to his apostles
"Because you follow me and speak my message,
therefore you will be arrested and put in prison. But don't worry about what to say for your

What to say will be given you by the Holy Spirit. Boldly proclaim my message
and do not be afraid of persecution. Take up your cross and follow
me.
Anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me
is not worthy of me."
Jesus, please give me more

Mon Nov 30
After
my 8.30 Mass at Yau Ma Tei on Sunday mornings, I usually go to the post office
to collect items from my mail box .... then to McDonald's for Matcha green tea with
toasted bacon & egg sandwich ... fondly remembering how my family would have
bacon and eggs for breakfast after early morning Sunday Mass in Brisbane 6
decades ago. Yesterday I sat at table with a Sri Lankan asylum seeker, after I
woke him up ... .and got him to use my Octopus card to get a McD's meal .....no
place to stay .... been HK more than a year ... left Sri Lanka after his parents
and sister died in Christmas tsunami a few years ago. From last night, thanks to
MercyHK, he now has a place to stay. Bacon and egg sandwich tastes extra good
when accompanied by Jesus present in the poor.
And on Sundays when I get home after McDonald's, I love to watch an episode
of the BBC's Songs of Praise. The one I watched yesterday was from Sydney at the

HOPE
54. Despite these dark clouds, which may not be ignored, I
would like in the following pages to take up and discuss many new paths of hope.
For God continues to sow abundant seeds of goodness in our human family.
The recent pandemic enabled us to recognize and appreciate once more all those
around us who, in the midst of fear, responded by putting their lives on the
line. We began to realize that our lives are interwoven with and sustained by
ordinary people valiantly shaping the decisive events of our shared history:
doctors, nurses, pharmacists, storekeepers and supermarket workers, cleaning
personnel, caretakers, transport workers, men and women working to provide
essential services and public safety, volunteers, priests and religious. They
understood that no one is saved alone.

Isaiah
51-52: Pay attention
to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the
Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How
beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who
proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!"
Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his
people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
My

Psalm

you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong
is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord
Recording
John
6.1-15(a): Near the
Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so
many sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples.
Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples "How can we
feed so many people?" The disciple Andrew said
"There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. But what good is that
for such a huge crowd?"
Recording
John
6.1-15 (b): Jesus said "Make
the people sit down". The crowd of about 20,000 sat down on the grass. Then
Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people. He did
the same with the fish. Everyone
ate as much as they wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said
"He really is God's great prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to
make him king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others, just as you
blessed the loaves and fish

1st Sun of Advent

Advent means the countdown to Christmas has begun. May the thought of Christmas give our troubled world a bit more hope, courage, strength and peace. These gifts are from Jesus. Even thinking about him starts to produce such gifts. As happened yesterday morning when I attended a very special funeral service: the words of Jesus offered hope and strength and courage and peace to the mourners

53. We forget that "there
is no worse form of alienation than to feel uprooted, belonging to no one.
A land will be fruitful, and its people bear fruit and give birth to the future,
only to the extent that it can foster a sense of belonging among its members,
create bonds of integration between generations and different communities, and
avoid all that makes us insensitive to others and leads to further
alienation"

Isaiah
62-66: The Lord says: "My

going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me

love for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all

My
recording of this reading

Psalms
79-80: O God, the nations
have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have
made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the
mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this
last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our
ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now
please give peace and healing to everyone and everything
in our history. Let the groans of
the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those
condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on
us and we shall be saved.

Corinthians 1.1-10: I, Paul,
appointed by God to be an apostle, send greetings to the church of God in
Corinth. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
I never stop thanking God for all the graces you have received through Jesus
Christ. The witness to Christ has been strong among you. God

13.1-37: Jesus spoke to his disciples

end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun and moon will stop shining.
Stars will fall from the sky. Then the
sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see
the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory. He will send his

Therefore you should live a good life and you will have nothing to fear on

Yesterday morning at CSD headquarters in Wanchai, I received my
updated prison pass: access to all CSD institutions, with no expiry date. Thank
you CSD!
Early last night there were many visitors at MercyHK's 2nd hand
shop at 191 Temple Street: asylum seekers recently out of detention urgently
needing basic items for the room they are renting; a stranded US man in need of
accommodation assistance; local drug addicts in need of a meal .... in fact our
little shop has become a social centre where people can come for help.
7,000
doctors, nurses and other hospital staff punished with pay cuts for going on
strike in February for trying to get the govt to close the border to protect HK

... big mistake....will cause huge backlash ... and face-losing decision
reversal))

52. Destroying
self-esteem is an easy way to dominate others. Behind these trends that
tend to level our world, there flourish powerful interests that take advantage
of such low self-esteem, while attempting, through the media and networks, to
create a new culture in the service of the elite. This plays into the
opportunism of financial speculators and raiders, and the poor always end up the
losers. Then too, ignoring the culture of their people has led to the inability
of many political leaders to devise an effective development plan that could be
freely accepted and sustained over time.

3: Let kindness and loyalty never leave you.
Tie them around your neck. In everything you do, keep God in mind.

Philip and Bartholomew;
Thomas and Matthew;
James son of

Simon and Judas.
Jesus sent them to prepare his way by visiting

He gave them power to cast out evil spirits and to heal all kinds of

Proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is near.
Cure the sick.

After the 4 day O.M.I. in service
program finished with lunch yesterday, I went to nearby Lo Wu women's prison to
hand in a variety of items: several sets of reading glasses, textbooks,
dictionaries, some IDD phone cards and money for the purchase of a radio and
color pens. One of the envelopes containing money for the latter two items for
some reason was lacking $10 ... and I had only a $20 note (... the staff not
being allowed to give change). Hearing my plight, another visitor, a lady I did
not know, promptly took out $10 to help me out. Kind lady turned out to be one
of a group of Catholic women who regularly visit the prison. God bless her!

FORMS OF SUBJECTION AND OF SELF-CONTEMPT
51. Certain economically prosperous
countries tend to be proposed as cultural models for less developed countries;
instead, each of those countries should be helped to grow in its own distinct
way and to develop its capacity for innovation while respecting the values of
its proper culture. A shallow and
pathetic desire to imitate others leads to copying and consuming in place of
creating, and fosters low national self-esteem. In the affluent sectors
of many poor countries, and at times in those who have recently emerged from
poverty, there is a resistance to native ways of thinking and acting, and a
tendency to look down on one's own cultural identity, as if it were the sole
cause of every ill.

Number 93 made my heart jump! I

93. Meanwhile,
many hotels and guesthouses are facing the crisis of closing down amid the
COVID-19 pandemic. The Government will implement a pilot scheme to subsidise
NGOs to rent suitable rooms in hotels and guesthouses with relatively low
occupancy rates for use as transitional housing. The THB plans to seek funding
from the Community Care Fund (CCF) to launch the pilot scheme shortly with a
view to increasing the supply of transitional housing.

50. Together, we can seek the truth in dialogue, in relaxed conversation or
in passionate debate. To do so calls for perseverance; it entails moments of
silence and suffering, yet it can patiently embrace the broader experience of
individuals and peoples. The flood of information at our fingertips does not
make for greater wisdom. Wisdom is not born of quick searches on the internet
nor is it a mass of unverified data. That is not the way to mature in the
encounter with truth. Conversations revolve only around the latest data; they
become merely horizontal and cumulative. We fail to keep our attention focused,
to penetrate to the heart of matters, and to recognize what is essential to give
meaning to our lives. Freedom thus becomes an illusion that we are peddled,
easily confused with the ability to navigate the internet. The process of
building fraternity, be it local or universal, can only be undertaken by spirits
that are free and open to authentic encounters.

silence and careful listening disappear, replaced by a frenzy of texting,
this basic structure of sage human communication is at risk. A new lifestyle is
emerging, where we create only what we want and exclude all that we cannot

logic, blocks the kind of serene reflection that could lead us to a shared

answered Job's questions
about the mystery of evil and suffering .... but I know your Son Jesus gave us the answers
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
146: My soul, give
praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my
days. Put no trust in
princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they
return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are
helped by Jacob's God,
whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven
and earth,
the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives
bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who
gives sight to the blind,
who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who
protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who
loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for
ever,
Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust
and faith in you

Ephesians
1.16-18: I never fail to remember you in my prayers
and to thank God for you. May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of glory,
give you more and more wisdom and knowledge
to see ever more clearly his great love for you. May he enlighten your mind to hope for the
glorious life
he has prepared for us in heaven
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may I see you
more clearly,
love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day

Matthew
9.18-26: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and said
"My daughter has just died. Please come and lay your hand on her
and she will come back to life". As Jesus and his friends were following the
official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years
came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.
The woman had said to herself
"If I can even touch his clothing, I will be healed". Jesus knew what she was doing and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed you".
Instantly she was healed. When Jesus arrived at the official's house
he saw a crowd of people crying loudly. Jesus said to them "Get out of the house.
The little girl is asleep, not dead". The crowd laughed at
Jesus.
After the crowd had gone outside, Jesus went inside. He took the little girl by the hand, and she stood
up.
News of what had happened spread all round the district.
Jesus, please increase my faith
in your power to heal the sick and raise the dead

Reflection on the above readings: No human doctor, no human science can solve the problem of death. Only God can deal with death.
