Tues Dec 8
Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary by her mother Anne

This feast reminds us that it is possible to defeat evil - e.g. the evil of drugs. Drug taking/trafficking can be stopped. Whenever evil wins a battle, it can still lose the war. From defeats by evil, greater goodness than previously thought possible, can become possible. Beautiful prayer for today by Pope Francis and Beautiful reflection for today by Fr Louis Lougen O.M.I.

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
61. In the oldest texts of the Bible, we find a reason why our hearts should expand to embrace the foreigner. It derives from the enduring memory of the Jewish people that they themselves had once lived as foreigners in Egypt:

"You shall not wrong or oppress a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt" (Ex 22:21).

"You shall not oppress a stranger; you know the heart of a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt" (Ex 23:9).

"When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the stranger as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt" (Lev 19:33-34).

"When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt" (Deut 24:21-22).

Genesis 3:

A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came  and to dust you will return." The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Ephesians 1: Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all the spiritual blessings of heaven in Christ. Before the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and spotless, and to live through love in his presence, determining that we should become his adopted children, the people who would put their hope in Christ before he came.
God our Father, before Mary was born, you chose her to be Jesus' mother. Before I was born, you  chose me to be a brother/sister of Jesus

Luke 1: In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God.  You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb

Mon Dec 7

As I was returning home from a visit to the chapel at Yau Ma Tei Catholic Primary School yesterday afternoon, I came across this terrible crash:

Which did not make sense, because it's very difficult for a car to overturn in that location.
Then I saw the reason for the crash - a movie being made!

This was a REAL crash:

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
60. In the New Testament, Hillel's precept was expressed in positive terms: "In everything, do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets". This command is universal in scope, embracing everyone on the basis of our shared humanity, since the heavenly Father "makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good". Hence the summons to "be merciful, just as your Father is merciful".

Proverbs 11-12: Pride comes before a fall. Humility brings wisdom. A city prospers when good people are many. A city falls when good people are few. Good people are kind to animals. Bad people are cruel to animals. Good people overlook insults.
Good people's speech promotes harmony in society. Worry makes our hearts heavy. Kindly words from others make us glad.

Lord, help me to be kind and wise

My recording of this reading

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid evil and to do good

Listen

Ephesians 5.1-4: Follow Christ by loving as he loved us. Among you there must be not even a mention of promiscuity or impurity in any of its forms. There must be no coarseness, or salacious talk and jokes - all this is wrong for you
Jesus, help me control my mind and my tongue

Listen

Matthew 12.46-50: One day when Jesus was speaking to a crowd of people inside a house, his mother and brothers arrived at the house. From outside the house they sent a message to say they would like to speak with him. When Jesus heard they were there, he said "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" Then holding out his hand towards his disciples he said "Here are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven, that person is my brother and sister and mother."
Brother Jesus,  please help me do the will of your Father in heaven

Dec 6
2nd Sun of Advent

Today is also the Feast of St Nicholas!....from whose name we get the name "Santa Claus". He was a bishop who cared about poor people. The St Nicholas tradition. Dec 6 is always a public holiday is some countries. And see below!

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
59. In earlier Jewish traditions, the imperative to love and care for others appears to have been limited to relationships between members of the same nation. The ancient commandment to "love your neighbour as yourself" was usually understood as referring to one's fellow citizens, yet the boundaries gradually expanded, especially in the Judaism that developed outside of the land of Israel. We encounter the command not to do to others what you would not want them to do to you. In the first century before Christ, Rabbi Hillel stated: "This is the entire Torah. Everything else is commentary". The desire to imitate God's own way of acting gradually replaced the tendency to think only of those nearest us: "The compassion of man is for his neighbour, but the compassion of the Lord is for all living beings".

c.f. readings for Advent 2

Isaiah 40:
"Console my people, console them" says the Lord. A voice cries out "Prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord. Make a straight highway for our God across every desert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all people will see the Lord's glory." Go up on a high mountain, joyful messenger to Zion. Shout with a loud voice, joyful messenger to Jerusalem. Shout to the towns of Judah "Here is your God".
Lord, please help me prepare your way into my heart, into  my family, into my world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps
Lord, please give more peace to our world

2 Peter 1.20 - 3.18: We must be careful to understand Scripture according to God's mind. We are not free to make up our own interpretations as we like. In the past there were false prophets. So there will always be false prophets and teachers who twist the truth to suit their own tastes and corrupt behavior. They will have much to answer for when the Day of the Lord comes. Our brother Paul has written to you about this issue. Sometimes his writing is not easy to understand, and is distorted by false teachers. Avoid false teaching. Stand firm in the truth. Go on growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. To him be glory, in time and in eternity. Amen
Jesus,  protect me from people who distort the Bible message

Matthew 1.1-8: This is the story of the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Long ago God said through the prophet Isaiah "I am going to send my messenger before you. He will prepare your way. A voice cries out in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord". And so it was that John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism for the forgiveness of sins. As the people were baptized by John in the river Jordan, they confessed their sins. John wore a garment of camel skin. Locusts and wild honey were his food. He said to the people "Someone is coming who is more important than I am. I am not worthy to kneel down and undo his sandal straps. I baptize you with water. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".
Jesus, please help us prepare a way for you like John the Baptist

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
58. The Book of Job sees our origin in the one Creator as the basis of certain common rights: "Did not he who made me in the womb also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb?" (Job 31:15). Many centuries later, Saint Irenaeus would use the image of a melody to make the same point: "One who seeks the truth should not concentrate on the differences between one note and another, thinking as if each was created separately and apart from the others; instead, he should realize that one and the same person composed the entire melody".

Proverbs 10: A wise child is a father's joy. A foolish child is a mother's sorrow. Laziness leads to poverty. Diligence leads to success. Hatred provokes disputes. Love covers over all offences. A flood of words is never without fault. Prudent people control their lips.
Lord, may my words be wise and loving

My recording of this reading

Psalm 5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your help. Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.  I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go. It is you, Lord, who bless good people. You surround them with favors, as with a shield.
Lord, I adore you as my Creator

Listen

Ephesians 4.22-32: You must give up your old way of life. You must put aside your old self and its delusions. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution, so that you can follow a way of life based on goodness and truth. From now on, no more lies. Delete anger from your mind at the end of each day. Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing. Try to find a decent job. Guard against foul talk. Let your conversation encourage people, not drag them down. Avoid grudges. Don't lose your temper.
Don't raise your voice to anyone. Don't call people names. Be friends with one another, and kind, forgiving one another as readily as God forgives us in Christ

Jesus, help me put these words into practice

Listen

Matthew 12.9-14: On another Sabbath Jesus  visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the hall. Some religious leaders asked Jesus, to trap him, "Is it lawful to heal a man on the Sabbath day?" (The leaders taught that no "work" could be done on the Sabbath). Jesus replied: "If one of your sheep fell down a hole on the Sabbath, wouldn't you lift it out? A man is more important than a sheep. Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." Then Jesus said to the man with the withered hand "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed. The religious leaders left the prayer hall and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus.
Jesus, please stop bad religious leaders from misleading people

Why Chinese Communist Party is bullying Australia

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
The context
57. This parable has to do with an age-old problem. Shortly after its account of the creation of the world and of man, the Bible takes up the issue of human relationships. Cain kills his brother Abel and then hears God ask: "Where is your brother Abel?"  His answer is one that we ourselves all too often give: "Am I my brother's keeper?". By the very question he asks, God leaves no room for an appeal to determinism or fatalism as a justification for our own indifference. Instead, he encourages us to create a different culture, in which we resolve our conflicts and care for one another.

Proverbs 9: Wisdom has built herself a house, she has erected 7 pillars. She has sent out her maidservants to proclaim from the city's heights: "Come and eat my bread, drink the wine I have prepared. Leave your foolishness and you will live. Come and walk in the way of wisdom."
Lord, please help us accept your invitation to grow in wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace
Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

Ephesians 4.17-19: Do not go back to living the aimless kind of life that many non-believers live. Intellectually they are in the dark, because they have shut the door on God's grace. They have a poor sense of right and wrong, and have abandoned themselves to reckless living

Matthew 12.1-8: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry.
They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees.  So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. Go and learn the meaning of these words 'What I want is mercy, not superficial external offerings'. I am Master of the Sabbath."
Jesus, Master of the Sabbath, please help me understand  that love is more important than law

Thu Dec 3

468 years ago today, in 1552, on a remote island off the coast of China, Saint Francis Xavier died. He could see China some 14km across the sea, but could not enter it. In the months before he died, he offered up his suffering that someone else might follow him and enter China. On October 6, 1552, Matteo Ricci was born in Italy. Xavier's prayer was answered two months before he died. With hindsight, we can see that for the spread of the Gospel in China, Ricci's cultural approach was a more suitable missionary method than Xavier's direct evangelisation. Maybe this is why God allowed Xavier to leave the scene without entering China.

Xavier died on the island today known as Shangchuan. I've been privileged to visit there a number of times: e.g. 1993 & 2005. But only after checking above Wiki article did I know that the name "Shangchuan" means "Saint John"!

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
56:
"Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself." And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbour?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, "Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend." Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."(Lk 10:25-37).

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
A STRANGER ON THE ROAD
56. The previous chapter should not be read as a cool and detached description of today's problems, for "the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the people of our time, especially of those who are poor or afflicted, are the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the followers of Christ as well. Nothing that is genuinely human fails to find an echo in their hearts". In the attempt to search for a ray of light in the midst of what we are experiencing, and before proposing a few lines of action, I now wish to devote a chapter to a parable told by Jesus Christ two thousand years ago. Although this Letter is addressed to all people of good will, regardless of their religious convictions, the parable is one that any of us can relate to and find challenging.

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Proverbs 6:  Idler, go to the ant.  Ponder her ways and grow wise. No one gives her orders, yet she makes sure of her food. Night and day you spend so much time sleeping. In no time poverty and want will be at your pillow. Avoid deceitful people, those who have leering lips, winking eyes, shuffling feet, beckoning fingers. Avoid people with a haughty look and people who sow dissension. Do not desire the beauty of your neighbour's wife. Adultery means trouble and disgrace.
Dear God, please give us the wisdom to avoid deceit and dishonesty

My recording of this reading

Psalm 2: Why are the nations revolting against God? Why won't the nations accept God? O kings and rulers of the nations, listen to God's voice. Serve the Lord with love and honor. Blessed are the nations that love the Lord
Let all the nations love you, Lord. Let all the nations love you

Listen

Ephesians 3.14-21: This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name: May he give you power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith. Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love
Glory be to him whose power  working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

Listen

Matthew 11.1-19: John the Baptist sent some of his friends to ask Jesus "Are you the promised Anointed One?" Jesus replied
"Tell John what you hear and see: blind people see, lame people walk, lepers are healed". Jesus also said to the people around him how neither John nor himself could please the religious leaders. "For John always fasted and never drank wine, and people said he was possessed. I eat well and I drink wine and people call me a glutton and a drunkard."

Jesus, please help me be someone who is easy to live with, someone who is not hard to please

  Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Jesus drank wine. Anyone who says it's wrong for Christians to drink wine does not have the spirit (pun intended) of Jesus! Drunkenness is wrong, but drinking in moderation is fine.

Jesus' wine problem .... so to speak .... began when he changed so much water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana?!
