Tues Dec 8
Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary by her mother Anne

This feast reminds us that it is possible to defeat evil - e.g. the evil of drugs. Drug taking/trafficking can be stopped. Whenever evil wins a battle, it can still lose the war. From defeats by evil, greater goodness than previously thought possible, can become possible. Beautiful prayer for today by Pope Francis and Beautiful reflection for today by Fr Louis Lougen O.M.I.

In the oldest texts of the Bible, we
find a reason why our hearts should expand to embrace the foreigner. It
derives from the enduring memory of the Jewish people that they themselves had
once lived as foreigners in Egypt:
"You shall not wrong or oppress a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt" (Ex 22:21).
"You shall not oppress a stranger; you know the heart of a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt" (Ex 23:9).
"When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the stranger as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt" (Lev 19:33-34).
"When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt" (Deut 24:21-22).

Genesis 3: A
creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and
first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they
disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God
said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday
a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the man and
woman: "From dust you came and to dust you will return." The
first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was
Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when
Adam and Eve disobeyed you

Psalm
98: Sing
a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has
brought salvation. The
Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He
has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of
the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth,
ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of
music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let
the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of
the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with
justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Ephesians
1: Blessed be God the Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all the spiritual blessings of
heaven in Christ. Before
the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and

become his adopted children, the people who would put their hope in Christ
before he came.

Luke
1: In
the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town
of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named
Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You
have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a
son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of
God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a
virgin?" The
angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her
old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth month". "I am
the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done
for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb

60. In the New Testament, Hillel's precept
was expressed in positive terms: "In everything, do to others as you would
have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets". This
command is universal in scope, embracing everyone on the basis of our shared
humanity, since the heavenly Father "makes his sun rise on the evil
and on the good". Hence the summons to "be merciful, just as your
Father is merciful".

Humility brings wisdom. A city prospers when good people are many.

59. In earlier Jewish traditions, the
imperative to love and care for others appears to have been limited to
relationships between members of the same nation. The ancient commandment to
"love your neighbour as yourself" was usually understood as referring
to one's fellow citizens, yet the boundaries gradually expanded, especially in
the Judaism that developed outside of the land of Israel. We encounter the
command not to do to others what you would not want them to do to you. In the
first century before Christ, Rabbi Hillel stated: "This
is the entire Torah. Everything else is commentary". The desire
to imitate God's own way of acting gradually replaced the tendency to think only
of those nearest us: "The compassion of man is for his neighbour, but the
compassion of the Lord is for all living beings".

Peter 1.20 - 3.18: We must be
careful to understand Scripture according to God's mind. We are not free to make
up our own interpretations as we like. In the past there were false prophets. So
there will always be false prophets and teachers who twist the truth to suit
their own tastes and corrupt behavior. They will have much to answer for
when the Day of the Lord comes. Our brother Paul has written to you about this
issue. Sometimes his writing is not easy to understand, and is distorted by
false teachers. Avoid false teaching. Stand firm in the truth. Go on growing in

is the story of the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Long ago God
said through the prophet Isaiah "I am going to send my messenger before
you. He will prepare your way. A voice cries out in the wilderness: prepare
a way for the Lord". And so it was that John the Baptist appeared in
the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism for the forgiveness of sins. As the people
were baptized by John in the river Jordan, they confessed their sins. John wore
a garment of camel skin. Locusts and wild honey were his food. He said to the
people "Someone is coming who is more important than I am. I am not worthy
to kneel down and undo his sandal straps. I baptize you with water. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit".

58. The Book of Job sees
our origin in the one Creator as the basis of certain common rights:
"Did not he who made me in the womb also make him? And did not the same one
fashion us in the womb?" (Job 31:15). Many centuries later, Saint
Irenaeus would use the image of a melody to make the same point: "One who
seeks the truth should not concentrate on the differences between one note and
another, thinking as if each was created separately and apart from the others;
instead, he should realize that one and the same person composed the entire
melody".

12.9-14: On another Sabbath Jesus visited a
prayer hall.
A man with a withered hand was in the hall. Some religious leaders asked Jesus, to trap
him,
"Is it lawful to heal a man on the Sabbath day?"
(The leaders taught that no "work" could be done on the
Sabbath). Jesus replied:
"If one of your sheep fell down a hole on the Sabbath,
wouldn't you lift it out?
A man is more important than a sheep.
Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." Then Jesus said to the man with the withered
hand
"Stretch out your hand".
He stretched it out. It was healed. The religious leaders left the prayer hall
and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus.

Pope Francis - Fratelli

The context
57. This parable has to do with an age-old
problem. Shortly after its account of the creation of the world and of man, the
Bible takes up the issue of human relationships. Cain kills his brother Abel and
then hears God ask: "Where is your brother Abel?" His answer is
one that we ourselves all too often give: "Am I my brother's
keeper?". By the very question he
asks, God leaves no room for an appeal to determinism or fatalism as a
justification for our own indifference. Instead, he encourages us to
create a different culture, in which we resolve our conflicts and care for one
another.

468
years ago today, in 1552, on a remote island off the coast of China, Saint
Francis Xavier died. He could see China some 14km across
the sea, but could not enter it. In the months before he died, he offered up his
suffering that someone else might follow him and enter China. On October 6,
1552, Matteo
Ricci was born in Italy. Xavier's prayer was answered two
months before he died. With hindsight, we can see that for the spread of the
Gospel in China, Ricci's cultural approach was a more suitable missionary method
than Xavier's direct evangelisation. Maybe this is why God allowed Xavier to
leave the scene without entering China.
Xavier died on the island today known as Shangchuan. I've been privileged to visit there a number of times: e.g. 1993 & 2005. But only after checking above Wiki article did I know that the name "Shangchuan" means "Saint John"!

56:"Just
then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what
must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written
in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself." And he
said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will
live." But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my
neighbour?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to
Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and
went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a
priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other
side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on
the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw
him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds,
having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought
him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave
them to the innkeeper, and said, "Take care of him; and when I come back, I
will repay you whatever more you spend." Which of these three, do you
think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?"
He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go
and do likewise."(Lk 10:25-37).

A STRANGER ON
THE ROAD
56.
The previous chapter should not be read as a cool and detached description of
today's problems, for "the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the
people of our time, especially of those who are poor or afflicted, are the joys
and hopes, the grief and anguish of the followers of Christ as well. Nothing
that is genuinely human fails to find an echo in their hearts". In the
attempt to search for a ray of light in the midst of what we are experiencing,
and before proposing a few lines of action, I now wish to devote a chapter to a
parable told by Jesus Christ two thousand years ago. Although this Letter is
addressed to all people of good will, regardless of their religious convictions,
the parable is one that any of us can
relate to and find challenging.

The
Book Blog:
4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Proverbs 6: Idler, go to the
ant. Ponder her ways
and grow wise.
No one gives her orders, yet she makes sure of her food. Night and day you spend so much time sleeping.
In no time poverty and want will be at your pillow. Avoid deceitful people, those who have leering
lips,
winking eyes, shuffling feet, beckoning fingers. Avoid people with a haughty look
and people who sow dissension. Do not desire the beauty of your neighbour's
wife.
Adultery means trouble and disgrace.
Dear God, please give us the
wisdom
to avoid deceit and dishonesty
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
2: Why are the nations revolting against God?
Why won't the nations accept God? O kings and rulers of the
nations, listen to God's voice.
Serve the Lord with love and honor. Blessed are the nations that love
the Lord
Let all the nations love you,
Lord. Let all the nations love you
Listen

Ephesians
3.14-21: This is what I pray, kneeling before the
Father from whom
every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name: May he give you power through his Spirit
for your hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith.
Planted in love and built on love, may you
continually focus
on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love
Glory be to him whose power working in
us,
can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation
in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

Matthew
11.1-19: John the Baptist sent some of his friends to
ask Jesus
"Are you the promised Anointed One?"
Jesus replied
"Tell John what you hear and see:
blind people see, lame people walk, lepers are healed". Jesus also said to the people around him
how neither John nor himself could please the religious leaders. "For John
always fasted and
never drank wine,
and people said he was possessed. I eat well and I drink wine
and people call me a glutton and a drunkard."
Jesus, please help me be
someone who is easy to live with,
someone who is not hard to please
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Jesus drank wine. Anyone who says it's wrong for Christians to drink wine does not have the spirit (pun intended) of Jesus! Drunkenness is wrong, but drinking in moderation is fine.

Jesus' wine problem .... so to speak .... began when he
changed so much water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana?!
