Yesterday I took part in a most enjoyable hike to Big Wave Bay, with 3 other O.M.I.s - Fr Luc, Fr Paul and Fr Roy - and 2 HK friends. ....observing social distancing etc. One again the weather was perfect and the whole trip went super smoothly - thank you Jesus! (and see below!)

Breaking news: Fr Luc Young O.M.I., a member of the China Delegation for more than 30 years, has been appointed by Pope Francis as Apostolic Administrator of his home island of Rodrigues, Mauritius. Congrats and God bless, Luc!  (more details in coming days)

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
MOVING BEYOND OURSELVES
88. In the depths of every heart, love creates bonds and expands existence, for it draws people out of themselves and towards others. Since we were made for love, in each one of us "a law of ekstasis" seems to operate: "the lover 'goes outside' the self to find a fuller existence in another". For this reason, "man always has to take up the challenge of moving beyond himself".

Ecclesiastes 6-7: Even if a person studies wisdom, what use is it? Wise person and fool both must die. Yet wisdom gives protection and strength. And wisdom reminds us that all of us make mistakes. Therefore we should be slow to condemn others.
Lord, may the memory of my own mistakes make me slow to judge other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 31: Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. My eyes are full of tears, my heart full of sorrow. Everyone makes fun of me. My friends don't want to know me. Save me, Lord, from this mess. I praise you Lord, for you protect those who trust you. You keep them safe from slander and lies. Be strong, let your heart take courage, all you who trust in the Lord
I trust in you, Lord. My life is in your hands

Listen

Philippians 4.4-9: I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord. Let your tolerance be evident to everyone. If there is anything you need, with prayer and thanksgiving ask God for it. Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that is worthwhile. Then the God of peace will be with you
Jesus, please fill my mind with good things

Listen

Matthew 15.21-28: Jesus went to the coastal district near Tyre and Sidon. A foreign woman followed him and shouted "Sir, Son of David, have pity on me. My daughter is tormented by an evil spirit." At first Jesus did not answer her, so his disciples said to him "Help her, because she keeps shouting after us." Jesus replied "I was sent only to the people of Israel". The foreign woman by now was kneeling at Jesus' feet. "Lord, help me" she pleaded. Jesus said to her "Woman, you have great faith. Your wish is granted". At that very moment, her daughter was healed.
Jesus, please give sick people great faith in you

Apart from a brief shopping trip at lunch time and an afternoon visit to the local church, I spent most of yesterday at the desk, working away at a backlog of prison-related jobs. Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
CHAPTER 3: ENVISAGING AND ENGENDERING AN OPEN WORLD
87. Human beings are so made that they cannot live, develop and find fulfilment except "in the sincere gift of self to others". Nor can they fully know themselves apart from an encounter with other persons: "I communicate effectively with myself only insofar as I communicate with others". No one can experience the true beauty of life without relating to others, without having real faces to love. This is part of the mystery of authentic human existence. "Life exists where there is bonding, communion, fraternity; and life is stronger than death when it is built on true relationships and bonds of fidelity. On the contrary, there is no life when we claim to be self-sufficient and live as islands: in these attitudes, death prevails".

Ecclesiastes 4-5: So many things we do are motivated by jealousy. Two people working together can succeed. One person alone is easily defeated. It is better to be content with what you have, than to be greedy for wealth.
Lord, please help me not to be greedy

My recording of this reading

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

Philippians 3-4: Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe. So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord
Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

Listen

Matthew 15.1-20: Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."
Jesus, please  clean my heart

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
86. I sometimes wonder why, in light of this, it took so long for the Church unequivocally to condemn slavery and various forms of violence. Today, with our developed spirituality and theology, we have no excuses. Still, there are those who appear to feel encouraged or at least permitted by their faith to support varieties of narrow and violent nationalism, xenophobia and contempt, and even the mistreatment of those who are different. Faith, and the humanism it inspires, must maintain a critical sense in the face of these tendencies, and prompt an immediate response whenever they rear their head. For this reason, it is important that catechesis and preaching speak more directly and clearly about the social meaning of existence, the fraternal dimension of spirituality, our conviction of the inalienable dignity of each person, and our reasons for loving and accepting all our brothers and sisters.

c.f. readings for Feast of the Epiphany

Isaiah 59-60: Arise, shine out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you, though the rest of the world is still in darkness. The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. People from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light. Then your days of mourning will be ended.
Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my life.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Ephesians 3.2-6: You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations;  it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel

Matthew 2.1-12: Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod. Some months after Jesus' birth, several  wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. They said "Where is the infant king of the Jews?  We saw his star as it rose and we have come to offer him honor." King Herod felt threatened by this news. He knew from the Scriptures that the promised Saviour would be born in Bethlehem. So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he too would like to offer honor to the child. The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by the star. The star filled them with joy. The star stopped over the place where the child was. The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child. They offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Then they returned to their own country by a different way, having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.
Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:

85. For Christians, the words of Jesus have an even deeper meaning. They compel us to recognize Christ himself in each of our abandoned or excluded brothers and sisters (cf. Mt 25:40.45). Faith has untold power to inspire and sustain our respect for others, for believers come to know that God loves every man and woman with infinite love and "thereby confers infinite dignity" upon all humanity. We likewise believe that Christ shed his blood for each of us and that no one is beyond the scope of his universal love. If we go to the ultimate source of that love which is the very life of the triune God, we encounter in the community of the three divine Persons the origin and perfect model of all life in society. Theology continues to be enriched by its reflection on this great truth.

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
The plea of the stranger
84. Finally, I would note that in another passage of the Gospel Jesus says: "I was a stranger and you welcomed me" (Mt 25:35). Jesus could speak those words because he had an open heart, sensitive to the difficulties of others. Saint Paul urges us to "rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep" (Rom 12:15). When our hearts do this, they are capable of identifying with others without worrying about where they were born or come from. In the process, we come to experience others as our "own flesh" (Is 58:7).

Psalms 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. I wish all dear readers the peace of Christmas right through 2021!

Thu Dec 31
Thank you Jesus for all the graces of 2020. Please forgive the wrongs of 2020. Please bless everyone I have met in 2020

Must admit 2020 was the busiest year of my whole life - starting with a month in Africa, then meetings in Australia, then the launch of street stalls morphing into a shop to help the homeless ... accompanied by the renting of dozens (now 41) of rooms for homeless people (now 61), thanks to the help of many kind people in HK. And with Covid continuing to take its toll on the HK economy, the number of homeless will, unfortunately, continue to grow .... so that 2021 is not likely to be any slower than 2020!

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the application by a prisoner from China for a hearing by the Court of Appeal .....followed by a visit to the nearby office of the Chinese University to enroll a number of prisoners for courses.

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
83. This explains why a Samaritan woman, when asked by Jesus for a drink, answered curtly: "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" (Jn 4:9). The most offensive charge that those who sought to discredit Jesus could bring was that he was "possessed" and "a Samaritan" (Jn 8:48). So this encounter of mercy between a Samaritan and a Jew is highly provocative; it leaves no room for ideological manipulation and challenges us to expand our frontiers. It gives a universal dimension to our call to love, one that transcends all prejudices, all historical and cultural barriers, all petty interests.

Ecclesiastes 1-2Everything is temporary and  passing. What's the use of all our toil? Our life is over in a few days. What's the use of all our toil? The same fate awaits both wise person and fool. Death is always just around the corner

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti
82. The parable, though, is troubling, for Jesus says that the wounded man was a Judean, while the one who stopped and helped him was a Samaritan. This detail is quite significant for our reflection on a love that includes everyone. The Samaritans lived in a region where pagan rites were practised. For the Jews, this made them impure, detestable, dangerous. In fact, one ancient Jewish text referring to nations that were hated, speaks of Samaria as "not even a people" (Sir 50:25); it also refers to "the foolish people that live in Shechem" (50:26).
((the term "Judean" here is strange. Gospel does not say man was a Judean, just presupposes he was Jewish. Maybe a translator's mistake?))

Proverbs 30-31: Every word of God is true and of great value. Do not change or misinterpret God's words. Do not give way to sexual excess. Do not give way to drunkenness. Be the voice of the poor, the unwanted. Uphold the rights of the needy. Happy the man who finds a good wife. She is far beyond the price of pearls. She looks after her household with care. She works diligently for her family. She holds out her hand to the poor. She opens her arms to the needy. Charm is deceitful, and beauty empty. The woman who is wise is the one to praise.
Lord, thank you for all the wisdom in the Book of Proverbs!

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Philippians 2.13-16: It is God who gives us the spiritual energy to be good and to do good. Don't be someone who is always complaining and arguing. Live a life of light in our dark world. May your life of light offer the world the word of life
Jesus, help me avoid complaining and arguing

Luke 2.26-40: There was a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer. She came by just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. Meanwhile the child grew to maturity, and he was filled with wisdom; and God's favour was with him.

Reflection on the above readings: In every parish church, every chapel .... there is an elderly "Anna" whose prayers are powerful!
