HK is now in the middle of its usual short but sharp Winter ... and government emergency shelters are open for overnight use by street sleepers. But some street sleepers .. most of them with mental issues ... continue to sleep rough ... endangering their lives. Yesterday Simon, my social work assistant and Louise (Simon's assistant!) and I spent some time with such street sleepers .... and helped some of them get more clothing. Last night I left some socks with a man who was sleeping (soundly!) on a park bench under a single blanket ... with his feet exposed to the cold. *** MercyHK financial report for January - here.

Trump in trouble, but might wriggle free? - Simon Tisdall

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
98. I would like to mention some of those "hidden exiles" who are treated as foreign bodies in society. Many persons with disabilities "feel that they exist without belonging and without participating". Much still prevents them from being fully enfranchised. Our concern should be not only to care for them but to ensure their "active participation in the civil and ecclesial community. That is a demanding and even tiring process, yet one that will gradually contribute to the formation of consciences capable of acknowledging each individual as a unique and unrepeatable person". I think, too, of "the elderly who, also due to their disability, are sometimes considered a burden". Yet each of them is able to offer "a unique contribution to the common good through their remarkable life stories". Let me repeat: we need to have "the courage to give a voice to those who are discriminated against due to their disability, because sadly, in some countries even today, people find it hard to acknowledge them as persons of equal dignity".

Song 5-7: The bride:
His conversation is sweetness itself, my beloved is totally  lovable. I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine.

The groom:
You are beautiful, my love, as beautiful as Jerusalem.
How beautiful are your feet and thighs. The curve of your thighs is like the curve of a necklace. Your navel is like an exquisite wine glass. Your belly is like a heap of wheat. Your two breasts are like two baby deer. Your neck is like an ivory tower. Your eyes are like beautiful water pools. Your nose is like a majestic tower.
How beautiful you are, how charming, my love, my delight.

Lord, please help me understand how much you love me

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Colossians 2.6-8: You must live your whole life according to the Christ you have received - Jesus the Lord. You must be built on him and held firm by the faith you have been taught. Make sure no one deceives you with any teaching based on the principles of this world instead of on Christ
Jesus, please protect people from false teaching

Listen

Matthew 18.1-10: One day Jesus heard his disciples arguing about which one of them was the most important. Jesus got a little child to sit in front of them, and said "If you want to be great in God's eyes, become child-like. In fact, unless you become child-like, you won't get to heaven. And make sure you never cause harm to children like this one. Remember, the protecting angels of children are in the presence of my Father in heaven."
Jesus, please help me to be more child-like, and please don't let me ever cause harm to children

Mon Jan 11

Yesterday I spent 7 hours preparing a mitigation letter for a woman from Africa (a mother of 5 young children) who is due to be sentenced at the High Court on January 20 for drug trafficking. And last night when I opened my mail (which I had collected from post office at midday) I found a letter from an African man informing me that he also requires a letter for his sentencing on .... January 18! (only just time to do and mail to him).

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
Open societies that integrate everyone

97. Some peripheries are close to us, in city centres or within our families. Hence there is an aspect of universal openness in love that is existential rather than geographical. It has to do with our daily efforts to expand our circle of friends, to reach those who, even though they are close to me, I do not naturally consider a part of my circle of interests. Every brother or sister in need, when abandoned or ignored by the society in which I live, becomes an existential foreigner, even though born in the same country. They may be citizens with full rights, yet they are treated like foreigners in their own country. Racism is a virus that quickly mutates and, instead of disappearing, goes into hiding, and lurks in waiting.

Psalms 38-39:
O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.

Lord, help us understand the meaning of life

Colossians 1-2: As I sit in my prison, I am at peace in my suffering, offering up my suffering to Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. God chose me to reveal to you his sacred message: Christ, your hope of glory,  is among you. My aim is to bind you together in love, and to keep you growing in your knowledge of God's plan for your lives
"Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, With cords that cannot be broken, Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, Bind us together in Love"

Matthew 17.14-20: A man went down on his knees and pleaded with Jesus: "Lord, please help my son. He is crazy and does crazy things like falling into fire and into water. I asked  your disciples to heal him but they were not able to." There was an evil spirit oppressing the boy, so Jesus ordered the spirit to leave the boy. The boy was healed immediately. Jesus' disciples asked him "Why were we unable to expel that spirit?" Jesus answered "Because your faith is not strong enough."
Jesus, please increase my faith, so that my prayers can be of more help to other people

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
94. Love, then, is more than just a series of benevolent actions. Those actions have their source in a union increasingly directed towards others, considering them of value, worthy, pleasing and beautiful apart from their physical or moral appearances. Our love for others, for who they are, moves us to seek the best for their lives. Only by cultivating this way of relating to one another will we make possible a social friendship that excludes no one and a fraternity that is open to all.

c.f. readings for The Baptism of Jesus
Isaiah 41-42:
The Lord says to his people Israel: "I have chosen you. I have not rejected you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried. I am your God. I give you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison".
Lord, please help me understand how "my servant" is Jesus

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Acts 10.34-38: Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: "The truth I have now come to realise" he said "is that God does not have favourites, but that anybody of any nationality who fears God and does what is right is acceptable to him. It is true, God sent his word to the people of Israel, and it was to them that the good news of peace was brought by Jesus Christ - but Jesus Christ is Lord of all people. You must have heard about the recent happenings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil."

Matthew 3.1-17: About 30 years after Jesus was born, a man began preaching repentance, and baptizing people in the river Jordan. This man was John the Baptist. His message was "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand". John fulfilled the prophecy: "A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord". John said "I baptize you with water, but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit". Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said
"This is my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on him".

Jesus, please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
92. The spiritual stature of a person's life is measured by love, which in the end remains "the criterion for the definitive decision about a human life's worth or lack thereof". Yet some believers think that it consists in the imposition of their own ideologies upon everyone else, or in a violent defence of the truth, or in impressive demonstrations of strength. All of us, as believers, need to recognize that love takes first place: love must never be put at risk, and the greatest danger lies in failing to love

Matthew 17.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. The  prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer

Fri Jan 8

Fr Jun O.M.I. and I were at Lo Wu women's prison from 10am to 5pm yesterday, visiting dozens of inmates in many workshops and day rooms. Welfare staff most grateful for our visits to give the inmates some variety, since virtually all religious and NGO activities have been cancelled because of Covid-19. But we faced (pun intended) quite a challenge to read our notes through the face shields chaplains are required to wear these days (on top of face mask).

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
The unique value of love
91. People can develop certain habits that might appear as moral values: fortitude, sobriety, hard work and similar virtues. Yet if the acts of the various moral virtues are to be rightly directed, one needs to take into account the extent to which they foster openness and union with others. That is made possible by the charity that God infuses. Without charity, we may perhaps possess only apparent virtues, incapable of sustaining life in common. Thus, Saint Thomas Aquinas could say - quoting Saint Augustine - that the temperance of a greedy person is in no way virtuous. Saint Bonaventure, for his part, explained that the other virtues, without charity, strictly speaking do not fulfil the commandments "the way God wants them to be fulfilled".

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Colossians 1.9-14: I pray that you will continue to grow in your Christian life, a life full of good deeds. Never give in when trials come, but bravely, even joyfully, carry your cross each day. Keep on thanking the Father who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins
Father, thank you for letting me be a Christian. Help me be a good Christian

Matthew 16.21-28: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"

Thu Jan 7

I spent yesterday morning with Simon my social work assistant and Sr Louise who is now kindly spending a few hours each day with Simon .... ministering to the 60+ homeless people for whom MercyHK is renting rooms (and to other homeless people on the street). The afternoon was spent at the desk, mainly on prison jobs.

Totalitarianism (targets: politicians, judiciary, foreigners, media, universities/schools, trade unions, churches). A time for more prayer.

We are still not learning our lessons (has double meaning!)

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
90. Significantly, many small communities living in desert areas developed a remarkable system of welcoming pilgrims as an exercise of the sacred duty of hospitality. The medieval monastic communities did likewise, as we see from the Rule of Saint Benedict. While acknowledging that it might detract from the discipline and silence of monasteries, Benedict nonetheless insisted that "the poor and pilgrims be treated with the utmost care and attention". Hospitality was one specific way of rising to the challenge and the gift present in an encounter with those outside one's own circle. The monks realized that the values they sought to cultivate had to be accompanied by a readiness to move beyond themselves in openness to others.

Ecclesiastes 10-11Foolish people are lazy,  and careless in speech. Wise people are diligent, and careful in speech. Young people, rejoice in your youth. Young people, remember your Creator in the days of your youth. Let everyone remember: our life is short. Don't waste your life. Live life well. Our days pass quickly and old age is soon at the doorstep. Old age: when to go uphill is difficult and even walking is not easy. In all we do, let us love and honor the Lord our God. At the end of our lives on earth, it is to God we will have to give an account of the way we have lived.
Lord, make us know the shortness of our life so that we may have more wisdom in living our lives

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. The Good News is spreading all over the world, bringing blessings to so many people

Matthew 16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God, please help the church to continue your work on earth

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:89. Nor can I reduce my life to relationships with a small group, even my own family; I cannot know myself apart from a broader network of relationships, including those that have preceded me and shaped my entire life. My relationship with those whom I respect has to take account of the fact that they do not live only for me, nor do I live only for them. Our relationships, if healthy and authentic, open us to others who expand and enrich us. Nowadays, our noblest social instincts can easily be thwarted by self-centred chats that give the impression of being deep relationships. On the contrary, authentic and mature love and true friendship can only take root in hearts open to growth through relationships with others. As couples or friends, we find that our hearts expand as we step out of ourselves and embrace others. Closed groups and self-absorbed couples that define themselves in opposition to others tend to be expressions of selfishness and mere self-preservation.

Ecclesiastes 8-9:  I see injustice in the world: good people are treated badly; bad people are treated well. I do know, however,
that good people are in the special care of God. We must try to be happy as much as we can. We must try to make the most of our lives. Spend your life with the woman you love. Whatever work you have to do, do it well.

Lord, please help me to be optimistic and cheerful

My recording of this reading

Psalm 32: Happy is the person whose sin is forgiven. For a while I refused to ask for forgiveness, and my body paid the penalty. But then I said "Lord, forgive me" and my spirit and body revived.

Jesus, bless everyone who has helped me in any way since the day I was born

Matthew 15.29-31: Jesus went up into the hills near the Lake of Galilee. Large crowds came to him bringing the lame, the crippled, the blind, the dumb and many others. These they put down at Jesus' feet. Jesus healed them all. The crowds praised the God of Israel when they saw the dumb speaking, cripples whole again, the lame walking and the blind able to see.
Jesus, please give sick people more faith in your healing love
