MercyHK's shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan is closed for the time being because of the number of Covid-19 cases in our area
Tues Jan 26
When
the Jordan lockdown rules allowed me to leave my home two nights ago around
6.30pm, I went for a walk around the restricted zone ... and located some street
sleepers ... then bought and delivered rice boxes for them. But one sleeper, A-Ming,
was on the other side of Woosong Street, just outside the restricted zone. So I
asked a lady walking on the street outside the police boundary tape to take the
rice box across the street to A-Ming. I did not know in advance she was a
journalist. She very kindly posted this
FB report, which has many comments mentioning MercyHK

2 Timothy 1.1-5 (for
feast of Timothy and Titus): From
Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy,
dear child of mine in the faith, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the
Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord. I
always remember your sincere faith. It came first to live in your
grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and now in yourself.
Jesus, thank you for parents who pass on the faith to their children
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge.
Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge.
Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope.
In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help.
My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me.
Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed,
may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp.
All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people
put their trust and hope in you
Listen

Titus
1.1-9: From
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to
Titus, true child of mine in the faith we share, wishing you grace and
peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Saviour. The reason I left
you behind in Crete was for you to appoint elders in every town: each of them a
man of irreproachable character, married only once, not arrogant or
hot-tempered, not a heavy drinker, not out to make money. A man who is
hospitable and a friend of all that is good; sensible, devout, with a firm grasp
of the Good News, a good teacher, able to refute people who argue against sound
doctrine.
Jesus, please help all pastors be good

Matthew
22.34-40:
In Jerusalem a religious leader
asked Jesus
"Which is the most important commandment?" Jesus replied
"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart.
And you must care as much about others as you care about yourself. These are the two most important
commandments.
All other commandments depend on these two."
Jesus, please help me love you with all my heart
and care for others as much as I care about myself

MercyHK's shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan is closed for the time being because of the number of Covid-19 cases in our area
Mon Jan 25
After 2 days of being part of the Jordan lockdown, my
neighbours and I were allowed to leave our homes and walk around the streets
from about 6.30 last night. But I did not go outside the test area. Spent much
time finding street sleepers then buying and delivering meals to them. And I met
some of the friendly CSD staff who have been part of the team
supervising/guarding the zone! *** Can
leave zone
Update nearly two hours later: just when I was about to put this blog and myself to bed, I had a call from one of the kind CSD officers: could I use about 20 (staff) rice boxes they had left over? So I went and gave out the boxes to a number of homeless people, including a group of drug users who sleep on the steps of YMT clinic ... for which I had to register on leaving and re-entering the test area. Lunch boxes were top meals. Thank you CSD!

162. The biggest issue is employment. The
truly "popular" thing - since it promotes the good of the people - is
to provide everyone with the opportunity to nurture the seeds that God has
planted in each of us: our talents, our initiative and our innate resources.
This is the finest help we can give to the poor, the best path to a life of
dignity. Hence my insistence that, "helping the poor financially must
always be a provisional solution in the face of pressing needs. The
broader objective should always be to allow them a dignified life through work"

c.f. readings for Conversion of St Paul
Isaiah
51-52: Pay attention
to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the
Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How
beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who
proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!"
Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his
people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love
you.
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
117: O Praise
the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim
him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is
faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord
Recording

Acts
9.1-19: Paul kept up
his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of
the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded
him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are
you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice
replied "I am Jesus, and
you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to
do". Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his
sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in
Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul
is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer
much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him
with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias
baptized him.
Jesus, please help me understand how
unkindness to others is unkindness to you

Mark
16.9-20: After he
rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had
cast out 7 devils. Next he appeared to two of his disciples while they
were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go
everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who
believes and is baptized, will be saved. Anyone who refuses to believe, will be
condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my
name they
will cast out devils, they
will have the gift of tongues, they
will pick up snakes in their hands, they will be unharmed if they drink
poison, they will lay their
hands on the sick, who will be healed". And so, the Lord Jesus,
after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out,
preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by
the miracles that accompanied the message
Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

Sun Jan 24
Today is Day Two of a 48 hour lockdown of my area in Jordan.
Yesterday I
had test, got tag and food items. Was lovely to have more than an hour out
in the beautiful sunshine. The whole operation went very smoothly and the staff
(from Fire Dept, Police, Customs, Immigration and CSD) were most polite and
friendly. My test (the 3rd in a week!) was negative - thank you Jesus! In
response to a message from HKO1 yesterday
morning I answered a few questions - leading to this
report in Chinese. Lockdown experience has made me more appreciative of the
situation in other countries where people have/had long lockdowns. English

c.f. readings for Sunday 3 (Word of God Sunday)
Jonah 2-4: God arranged for a big fish to swallow Jonah.
Jonah was in the fish for 3 days. Inside the fish, Jonah prayed to God for help.
God heard Jonah's prayer and got the fish to vomit Jonah on the shore. Again God told Jonah to preach repentance in
Nineveh.
This time Jonah did as God requested.
"Forty days and Nineveh will be destroyed" he proclaimed. The people of Nineveh believed God's message.
They put on sackcloth and ashes. They fasted and prayed.
They repented of their evil behavior. God saw their change of heart and spared
Nineveh.
Jonah complained to God:
"Your change of mind will cause me a big loss of face." God said to Jonah:
"Do I not have the right to show compassion to my people?"
Lord, please help me repent of
bad behavior

24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples.
It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord.
Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long.
Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.

Corinthians 7.29-31: Our time is growing
short. Those who have wives should live as though they had none, and those who
mourn should live as though they had nothing to mourn for; those who are
enjoying life should live as though there were nothing to laugh about; those
whose life is buying things should live as though they had nothing of their own;
and those who have to deal with the world should not become engrossed in it. I
say this because the world as we know it is passing away.
Mark
1.14-20: Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good
News from God.
"The time has come" he said "and the kingdom of God is
close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good
News." As he was walking along by the sea of Galilee,
he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew. Jesus said to
them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men".
Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus.
Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother
John. He called them also to follow him. They left their nets and
boat and followed him.
Jesus, please bless all the
people who work full time as "fishers of men"

152. In some areas of our cities, there is
still a lively sense of neighbourhood. Each person quite spontaneously perceives
a duty to accompany and help his or her neighbour. In places where these
community values are maintained, people experience a closeness marked by
gratitude, solidarity and reciprocity. The neighbourhood gives them a sense of
shared identity. Would that
neighbouring countries were able to encourage a similar neighbourly spirit
between their peoples! Yet the spirit of individualism also affects
relations between countries. The danger of thinking that we have to protect
ourselves from one another, of viewing others as competitors or dangerous
enemies, also affects relations between peoples in the same region. Perhaps we
were trained in this kind of fear and mistrust.

Mutual assistance between countries proves enriching for each. A country that
moves forward while remaining solidly grounded in its original cultural
substratum is a treasure for the whole of humanity. We need to develop the
awareness that nowadays we are either all saved together or no one is saved. Poverty,
decadence and suffering in one part of the earth are a silent breeding ground
for problems that will end up affecting the entire planet. If we are
troubled by the extinction of certain species, we should be all the more
troubled that in some parts of our world individuals or peoples are prevented
from developing their potential and beauty by poverty or other structural
limitations. In the end, this will impoverish us all.

I have used in the past. Latino culture is "a ferment of values and

intense immigration from Italy has left a mark on the culture of the society,
and the presence of some 200,000 Jews has a great effect on the cultural 'style'

For those who are not recent arrivals and already participate in the fabric of
society, it is important to apply the concept of "citizenship", which
"is based on the equality of rights and duties, under which all enjoy
justice. It is therefore crucial to
establish in our societies the concept of full citizenship and to
reject the discriminatory use of the term 'minorities', which
engenders feelings of isolation and inferiority. Its misuse paves the way for
hostility and discord; it undoes any successes and takes away the religious and
civil rights of some citizens who are thus discriminated against"

Sirach 1-3: All wisdom comes from God.
Love for God is the source of wisdom. If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's
commandments,
in private as well as in public. Keep the commandment to honor your
parents.
Respect for your father will atone for your sins.
Honor for your mother will gain you blessings. Support your father in his old age.
Even if his mind should fail, show him kindness.
Do not despise him in your health and strength. Be gentle in the way you live your life.
The greater you are, the more humbly you should behave.
Dear
God, please help me always respect and honor my parents
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you
are.
You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from
trouble.
You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares
that I can't get to sleep.
Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you,
in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready.
I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength,
and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise
and love you every day

Colossians
4.3-21: Pray for me, in my chains,
that I may proclaim the message of Christ as clearly as I should. Be tactful with people who are not Christians.
Use friendly conversation with them. Greetings from the believers here with me.
Greetings to all the believers in your area. Grace be with you all

Matthew
20.20-28:
The brothers James and John were two of Jesus'
disciples.
One day their mother said to Jesus
"When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and
left". Jesus said to James
and John
"Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and
left". The 10 other disciples were angry
at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all.
"In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others.
But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by
serving others, not dominating them,
just as I came not to be served, but to serve,
and to give my life as a ransom for the world".
Jesus, please help me want to help and serve
other people, not dominate and control them

I was at the High Court yesterday morning for the case of an
African man sentenced for drug trafficking to HK. He was given a 3 month
discount for help to my anti-drug campaign. From the High Court I went to the
nearby Chinese University office to enroll some prisoners for courses. Then to
Central to the Catholic Centre chapel and a bookstore. Then back to Admiralty to
spend time with Fr Franco Mella on his 11th (!) day of fasting to lobby Beijing
and HK to allow children born in China of HK parents to come to HK - see this

This implies taking certain
indispensable steps, especially
in response to those who are fleeing grave humanitarian crises. As examples, we
may cite: increasing and simplifying the granting of visas; adopting programs of
individual and community sponsorship; opening humanitarian corridors for the
most vulnerable refugees; providing suitable and dignified housing; guaranteeing
personal security and access to basic services; ensuring adequate consular
assistance and the right to retain personal identity documents; equitable access
to the justice system; the possibility of opening bank accounts and the
guarantee of the minimum needed to survive; freedom of movement and the
possibility of employment; protecting minors and ensuring their regular access
to education; providing for programs of temporary guardianship or shelter;
guaranteeing religious freedom; promoting integration into society; supporting
the reuniting of families; and preparing local communities for the process of
integration.

Wisdom
10-19: Wisdom has been present in the world since
the beginning of time.
Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of
creation.
Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and
kindness.
Wise people try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and
imitate your goodness and kindness
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness,
and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them.
What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that
sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God.
Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help.
With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn
a humbled, contrite heart

Matthew
20.1-16:
Jesus said to his disciples
The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire
workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them the normal daily
wage. Then about 9am he went again to
the market place. He saw more men without a job. He got them also to
go to his vineyard. He promised to pay them a fair wage. About noon and again about 3pm he
once more went to the market place and employed two more groups of
men. About 5pm he went one final time
and employed one last group of men. At sunset when the men came to be
paid, the owner paid everyone a normal day's wage. This made the
dawn group unhappy. They grumbled and said "We
have done a full day's work in the heat. Yet we got the same as those who
did only one hour's work. This is not fair!" The owner replied "I am
paying you what we agreed to. Why do you begrudge my generosity?"
Jesus, please help me not to be jealous of your
gifts to others

129. Complex challenges arise when our
neighbour happens to be an immigrant. Ideally, unnecessary migration ought
to be avoided; this entails creating in countries of origin the conditions
needed for a dignified life and integral development. Yet until substantial
progress is made in achieving this goal, we
are obliged to respect the right of all individuals to find a place that meets
their basic needs and those of their families, and where they can find
personal fulfilment. Our response to the arrival of migrating persons can be
summarized by four words: welcome, protect, promote and integrate.

Wisdom
8-9: From my youth I sought and loved Wisdom.
Wisdom teaches us temperance, prudence, justice and fortitude. I prayed for Wisdom like
this:
"God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy,
in Wisdom you made all things. Grant me Wisdom who was with you when you made
the world.
May she teach me what is right,
so that I may be a good ruler.
Lord, please give me Wisdom, as
you gave Wisdom to King Solomon
My
recording of this reading

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable,
with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and
succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad
people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom.
Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws.
Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand
the meaning of life
Listen

Colossians
3.15-16: May the peace of Christ reign in your hearts.
Always be thankful. Let the message of Christ, in all its
richness, find a home in you.
Help each other grow in wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts, sing songs to
God.
Jesus, live in my heart. Please live in
my heart
Listen

Matthew
19.27-29: On behalf of all the disciples, Peter asked
Jesus
"What about us? We have left everything to follow you." Jesus replied "You will be
leaders in the church on earth. Also, anyone who has left home, family
or country for the sake of my name,
will receive a 100-fold blessing in this life,
and will also receive eternal life in Heaven."
Jesus, please bless all Gospel
