Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
192. In this regard, Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb and I have called upon "the architects of international policy and world economy to work strenuously to spread the culture of tolerance and of living together in peace;
to intervene at the earliest opportunity to stop the shedding of innocent blood"

Readings for Feast of Presentation

Malachi 3.1-2: The Lord God says this: Look, I am going to send my messenger to prepare a way before me. And the Lord you are seeking will suddenly enter his Temple.
Jesus presented in the Temple on this day, we praise you Lord
My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the  universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Recording

Hebrews 2.14-18: The Son did not become an angel. He became a man, so that he could die for us. By his death he took away the power of the devil. He himself experienced temptation. He is able to help us when we are tempted.
Jesus, please help me when I am tempted to do something wrong

Recording

Luke 2.22-32: When Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as the Law required. In Jerusalem there was an old man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying "Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel".
Jesus, true Light of the world, we praise you Lord
Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
Simeon in Luke's Gospel and the three wise men in Matthew's Gospel have the same message: the Baby born
in the stable is the Saviour of not just Israel but of the whole world. May all places, all hearts "let him enter" (Psalms 24-26)

Early yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the drug trafficking case of a woman from Africa. Followed by many appointments and meetings during the day and early evening ... to the point that when I stopped before sleep last night to ask myself what I did in the morning, the High Court time seemed like a week ago!

Letter from Kenyan woman in prison in HK. Letter names the people in Kenya who recruited her and the Nigerians in Addis who gave her the drugs. Only after meeting the woman in prison did I realise that she and I were on the same flight on Feb 4, 2020 from Addis to HK via Manila! If only I could have warned her!

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
191. At a time when various forms of fundamentalist intolerance are damaging relationships between individuals, groups and peoples, let us be committed to living and teaching the value of respect for others, a love capable of welcoming differences, and the priority of the dignity of every human being over his or her ideas, opinions, practices and even sins.

Sirach 24: Wisdom speaks: "From eternity, in the beginning, God created me. God sent  me to be everywhere on earth. Approach me, you who desire me. Whoever listens to me will stay on the road of goodness."
Lord, please help me seek wisdom and listen to wisdom's voice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 81: Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob. Listen to the voice of the Lord: "I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. Let there be no foreign god among you, no worship of a false god. O that my people would heed me, that Israel would walk in my ways. At once I would subdue their foes. But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and honey".
Lord, please help us to walk in your ways

Listen

1 Thessalonians 5.19-28Let the Holy Spirit have a free reign in your life. Hold on to what is good. Avoid every form of evil. May the God of peace make you holy. May you be kept safe in spirit, soul and body, for the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ. God has called you. He will not fail you. Pray for us. Greet all the believers with the holy kiss. Read this letter to all the believers. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you
Holy Spirit of Jesus, Holy Spirit of the Father, I open my life to you.  My heart is yours

Listen

Matthew 26.17-29: On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles. While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer. Then Jesus took some bread, blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying "Take this and eat it. This is my body". Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying "Take this and drink it. This is my blood".
Jesus, please help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Why did Jesus wait till his final meal before giving his apostles his Body and Blood? Maybe he was following the ancient Biblical tradition where famous figures gave their final solemn blessing just before they died. And maybe he waited till he was about to leave them physically before giving them giving them his on-going presence, his on-going Incarnation in the Eucharist.

Son & daughter-in-law of HK politician run migration agency in Australia

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
186: If someone helps an elderly person cross a road, that is a fine act of charity. The politician, on the other hand, builds a bridge, and that too is an act of charity. While one person can help another by providing something to eat, the politician creates a job for another person, and thus practices a lofty form of charity that ennobles his or her political activity.

c.f. Readings for "Sunday 4"

Deuteronomy 18:15-20: The Lord said to Moses "I will raise up a prophet like yourself for them from their own brothers; I will put my words into his mouth and he shall tell them all I command him. The man who does not listen to my words that he speaks in my name, shall be held answerable to me for it. But the prophet who presumes to say in my name a thing I have not commanded him to say, that prophet shall die"
Lord, please protect our world from people who preach violence in your name

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God, and we are the people who belong to his pasture. Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord
Recording

Mark 1.21-28: Jesus and the fishermen went to the town of Capernaum. On the Sabbath Jesus began to teach in the local  prayer hall. The listeners were deeply impressed by Jesus' teaching. Unlike the religious leaders, Jesus taught with authority. That very day in the prayer hall there was a man possessed by an evil spirit.  The spirit shouted out "Have you come to destroy me, Jesus of Nazareth?  I know who you are: the Holy One of God." Jesus said strongly "Be quiet! Come out of him!" The evil spirit threw the man on the ground and with a loud cry went out of him. The people in the prayer hall were amazed. They said "Here is a teaching which has authority. Even evil spirits obey him." Jesus' reputation quickly spread throughout the whole district
Jesus, Holy One of God, please protect my family from evil

Sirach 20-23: People who foolishly talk too much become unpopular. Wise people know when to speak and how much to speak. The talk of a foolish person is like a load on a journey. The talk of a wise person is a pleasure to hear. Lord, do not give me proud eyes. Do not let lust take control of my life. Do not let my mouth use coarse and foul language. Help me avoid sins of impurity, alone or with others.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to avoid bad talk and bad actions

My recording of this reading

Psalm 79-80:
O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our  history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.
Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Listen

1 Thessalonians 5.12-18: Respect your Christian leaders. Be at peace among yourselves. Warn idlers, give courage to people who are struggling, care for the weak, and be patient with everyone. Never try to take revenge. Focus on what is best for each other and for the community. For all things give thanks to God, because this is what God expects you to do in Christ Jesus
Jesus, thank you for everything, even for unhappy things

Listen

Matthew 26.1-16: A few days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death. Jesus knew what was happening. He told his disciples "In a few days I will be crucified". During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper. At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood  that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time. The leaders paid Judas 30 pieces of silver. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest.
Jesus, please forgive me for the times when I have not been faithful  to you

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
176. For many people today, politics is a distasteful word, often due to the mistakes, corruption and inefficiency of some politicians. There are also attempts to discredit politics, to replace it with economics or to twist it to one ideology or another. Yet can our world function without politics? Can there be an effective process of growth towards universal fraternity and social peace without a sound political life?

Sirach 15-19: Wisdom makes us happy. Foolishness makes us sad. Humility is the pathway to wisdom. We are free to choose good or evil, wisdom or foolishness. To live a good life is something everyone can try to do. If we have done something wrong, we must ask pardon of the Lord. We must turn our back on wrongdoing, and face towards the Lord. Do not indulge in luxurious living. Too much wine and luxury corrupts the heart. Avoid gossip and slander. Be someone who can keep a secret. The way people dress tells you what work they do. The way people walk also tells a lot about them.
Lord, please help me turn my back on wrongdoing. Help me face towards you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know  all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them.
He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader.
God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.

Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

01 02

1 Thessalonians 5.1-11: The Lord's coming will not find us unprepared if we live a good life. You are not children of the night and of darkness. You are children of the light and of the day. Put on faith and love for a breastplate. Put on the hope of salvation for a helmet. Encourage one another. Strengthen one another.
Jesus, please help me be a person of
encouragement, not discouragement

Listen

Matthew 25. 31-46: Jesus said to his disciples: When I come in glory at the end of the world, all peoples of all times will be gathered in front of me. I will separate them, like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. I will place the sheep on my right, the goats on my left. I will say to those on my right "Come and enter my kingdom. For I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you made me welcome. I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to see me". Then those good people on my right will say "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? When did we see you thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, naked and clothe you, sick or in prison, and visit you?" I will answer "Each time  you helped and cared for a poor person,
you helped and cared for me
".

Then I will say to those on my left "Go away from me and join Satan and his angels in hell. For I was hungry, and you never gave me food. I was thirsty, and you never gave me anything to drink. I was a stranger, and you never made me welcome,
naked, and you never clothed me, sick and in prison, and you never visited me". Those on my left will then ask "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or naked, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?" I will answer "Each time you refused to help and care for a poor person, you refused to help and care for me". Those on the left will then go to eternal punishment. Those on the right will go to eternal life.

Jesus, please help me do more for poor people. Make me understand that when I help a poor person, I help you

MercyHK's shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan is closed for the time being because of the number of Covid-19 cases in our area

Thu Jan 28

Yesterday afternoon I was at the High Court in connection with a couple of drug trafficking cases. On the way home, after I got off the MTR in Yau Ma Tei, I saw 3 policemen interrogating - possibly arresting - an elderly local man who has become a drug addict. When I got closer and realised who the man was I quietly said to one of the policeman "He used to be a policeman" (several decades ago) hoping they would show him compassion

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
170. I would once more observe that "the financial crisis of 2007-08 provided an opportunity to develop a new economy, more attentive to ethical principles, and new ways of regulating speculative financial practices and virtual wealth. But the response to the crisis did not include rethinking the outdated criteria which continue to rule the world". Indeed, it appears that the actual strategies developed worldwide in the wake of the crisis fostered greater individualism, less integration and increased freedom for the truly powerful, who always find a way to escape unscathed.

Sirach 12.-14No good will come to a person who persists in evil. No good will come to a person who refuses to help the poor. In prosperity you cannot always be sure who is a true friend, but in adversity you can be sure who is not a friend. Greed causes a personality to wither. The pursuit of wisdom causes a personality to blossom
Lord, please give me the wisdom to be kind and to avoid greed

Psalms 73-77: Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper, I wonder what's the use in trying to be good? But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see our world  and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people. So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

1 Thessalonians 4.13-18: You asked us about the situation of people who have died. Do not mourn in an unhealthy way for them, like people who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and that it will be the same for everyone who dies in God's friendship: God will give them life with Jesus. They will live in God's House for ever. With thoughts such as these you should comfort one another in times of mourning
Jesus, please increase my faith in the life to come

Matthew 24.9-44: Jesus spoke to his disciples about the future: "On account of my name you will be hated, tortured and killed.
But the Good News of the kingdom will spread to every nation before the end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun and moon will stop shining. Stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory. He will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you should live a good life, and you will have nothing to fear on your last day."
Jesus, please help me be a good person

Reflection on the above Bible readings: "We grieve with hope" - what a good way of summing up the reading from Thessalonians!

Yesterday morning Simon, my social work assistant and I spent three hours with a journalist from HK01. His report is here. And a report by a journalist from HKCNews with whom Simon and I spent several hours yesterday is here

Last night I spent 3 and a half hours with a most dedicated team from StandNews. That report will be linked here when available.

Not forgetting some extra special good news from two days ago: Simon and his assistant Sr Louise accompanied a 50 year old woman as she entered a Christian drug treatment centre for a 6 month course. A real miracle to have rescued this poor women from the drug world where she was living in terrible conditions. Jesus, please bless the dear lady and restore her to full health!

Beautiful message for Australia Day from HK Consul-General Elizabeth Ward

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
168. The marketplace, by itself, cannot resolve every problem, however much we are asked to believe this dogma of neoliberal faith. Whatever the challenge, this impoverished and repetitive school of thought always offers the same recipes. Neoliberalism simply reproduces itself by resorting to the magic theories of "spillover" or "trickle" - without using the name - as the only solution to societal problems. There is little appreciation of the fact that the alleged "spillover" does not resolve the inequality that gives rise to new forms of violence threatening the fabric of society.

Sirach 10-11: As the magistrate is, so will his officials be. As the governor is, so will be the inhabitants of his city. What has dust and ashes to pride itself on? A king today is a corpse tomorrow. Do not praise a person for good looks, nor dislike anyone for appearance. Small among winged creatures is the bee, but nothing is sweeter than her honey
Lord, please give our world good leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Jesus, make me be a better person, a better Christian

Matthew 23.1-36: Jesus told the people to respect their religious leaders, but he condemned the religious leaders for not practising what they preached, for doing things just to attract attention, for craving front seats and places of honor, for being concerned only with externals. Jesus called the religious leaders "hypocrites", "blind guides", "tombs that look good on the outside but are full of dead bones".
Jesus, help religious leaders be good people
