The new lectionary ... another disaster - Brendan Hoban

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
219. When one part of society exploits all that the world has to offer, acting as if the poor did not exist, there will eventually be consequences. Sooner or later, ignoring the existence and rights of others will erupt in some form of violence, often when least expected. (( ?!?))

Readings are from Simple Bible

Isaiah 1: Listen, heaven and earth, for the Lord is speaking: "The ox knows its owner and the donkey its master's crib. But my people have rebelled against me. I am tired of your hypocritical lives, tired of offerings given with dirty hands. You are so greedy for profit, always looking for bribes. Take your wrong-doing out of my sight. Stop doing evil. Learn to do good.
Practise justice towards the poor. Help the oppressed, the orphan and the widow. Then, though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow."

Lord, please help me "wash my hands" by doing good for poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 92:
It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Listen

1 Timothy 4.8-10: It's good to keep fit physically, and even more important to keep fit spiritually. We have put our trust in the living God. He is the savior of the whole human race, especially of believers
Jesus, may I keep fit, physically and spiritually

Listen

Matthew 27.57-66: Joseph from Arimathaea was a rich man who had become a disciple of Jesus. After Jesus died on Friday, he asked Governor Pilate for Jesus' body. Joseph wrapped the body in a clean burial cloth and put it in his own new tomb in a rock cave. He then put a large stone at the cave's entrance. The next day, Saturday, the religious leaders went to Pilate and said
"This imposter said he would rise from the dead after 3 days. Therefore you should secure the tomb in case his disciples steal the body and say he has risen from the dead". Pilate gave them a guard and told them to secure the tomb. The guards took up their position at the tomb and seals were put on the entrance stone.

Jesus in the tomb, please give eternal life to all who have died
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Paul encourages Timothy to keep fit spiritually. A good thought for the start of Lent (tomorrow)!

Mon Feb 16

Yesterday afternoon there were two lots of special people at my home for Lunar New Year visits: a group of old friends from Notre Dame Parish in Kowloon City where I worked for ten years. And two former prisoners who are now based at the Mercy Centre on Cheung Chau Island.

After their visits I went to the chapel at Yau Ma Tei Parish for a time of prayer ... remembering clearly 56 years ago on Feb 14, 1965 when I left my parents' home in Brisbane for the long train trip to Melbourne for seminary studies. A sacred memory, saying goodbye (temporarily) on the platform of South Brisbane station to my dear mother, father, brother and O.M.I.s from Iona College where I had just finished secondary school.

RTHK's recent report on the work of MercyHK for homeless people in Jordan/YMT is now on FB - here

Australian journalist: Freedom lovers like me no longer welcome in HK

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
211. In a pluralistic society, dialogue is the best way to realize what ought always to be affirmed and respected apart from any ephemeral consensus. Such dialogue needs to be enriched and illumined by clear thinking, rational arguments, a variety of perspectives and the contribution of different fields of knowledge and points of view

Sirach 51: When I was young, before I became a traveler, I prayed for wisdom. Thanks to wisdom, I have been successful in my work. And so I finish this book by praising the God who gave me wisdom: I give thanks to you, Lord and King, and praise you, God my savior. For by wisdom you have protected and supported me, and rescued me from so many troubles. I will praise you all my days and gratefully sing your praises.
Lord,  thank you for the wisdom in this book. Please give me wisdom for each day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Listen

1 Timothy 4.1-7: Don't be surprised if some people come up with strange ideas about how to live life. Satan and his friends are always trying to sow lies and deception in the Lord's field of truth. Have nothing to do with strange ideas like "marriage is forbidden" or "you are not allowed to eat certain foods". Everything God made is good, and no food is to be rejected, provided grace is said for it. The word of God and prayer make food holy
Jesus, please help me remember to say a little prayer before I eat

Listen

Matthew 27.45-54: Jesus was put on the cross about 9am. From about noon until 3pm there was darkness over all the land. About 3pm Jesus cried out the words of Psalm 22: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" A little while later he again cried out in a loud voice. Then he died. At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom,  and there was a violent earthquake. The Roman soldiers were terrified. Their leader called out "Truly this was a son of God".
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: So many of our relatives and friends have died ... and we believe we will see them again in Heaven .... because Jesus died and rose from the dead to reopen the gates of Heaven

During the visit of Notre Dame friends to my home yesterday afternoon I was able to make a video call to Fr Luc Young O.M.I. who is now in his home island of Rodrigues, Mauritius, as apostolic administrator.   Valentine's Day unique opportunity for Church (let's reclaim St Valentine's Day!)

Yesterday morning I spent several hours with a media team preparing a documentary on the issue of homelessness in the Yau Ma Tei area. When their report is published in the next week or so, I will link it here. It is quite lengthy and will be published on Facebook

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
207.
What is law without the conviction, born of age-old reflection and great wisdom, that each human being is sacred and inviolable? If society is to have a future, it must respect the truth of our human dignity and submit to that truth. Murder is not wrong simply because it is socially unacceptable and punished by law, but because of a deeper conviction. This is a non-negotiable truth attained by the use of reason and accepted in conscience. A society is noble and decent not least for its support of the pursuit of truth and its adherence to the most basic of truths.

c.f. readings for Sunday 6

Leviticus 13-15: Instructions for hygiene: People with skin diseases, suspected leprosy, boils and burns should be carefully examined and isolated if necessary. The clothing and homes of people with leprosy should be put out of use. During and after seminal or illness discharges and menstruation, people should show extra concern for hygiene.
Dear God, please help me take good care of my health

My recording of this reading

Psalm 32: Happy is the person whose sin is forgiven. For a while I refused to ask for forgiveness, and my body paid the penalty. But then I said "Lord, forgive me" and my spirit and body revived.
Lord, when I do wrong, please give me the grace to say sorry and ask forgiveness

 Listen

1 Corinthians 10.16 - 11.1: The cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ. The bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. Avoid anything to do with idol worship.  It doesn't make sense to share in the table of the Lord and in the table of demons. Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone. Try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for your own advantage, but for the advantage of others, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ.
Jesus, please help me imitate you in my daily life

 Listen

Mark 1.40-45: A leper came to Jesus and on his knees pleaded "If you want to, you can heal me". Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!" The leprosy left him at that moment and he was healed. Jesus told the man not to tell people what had happened (in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use him politically).  But the man told everyone. Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town (for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places. Even so, people from all around the district would come to him.
Jesus, please heal people who are lepers

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings:  The leper broke the law - he wasn't supposed to go near people. Jesus broke the law - he wasn't supposed to touch a leper. Sometimes ... it's ok to break some laws!

Sirach 44-50: It is good to remember the famous people in history who had a special love for God. Remembering their faith and their love for God will give us courage for our daily lives. They were human and made mistakes, yet they persevered in serving the Lord. People like Abraham, Moses, David. Let us try to imitate their faith and courage.
Lord, please give me courage to live each day as I should

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Listen

1 Timothy 3.1-15: To want to be a presiding elder is to want to do a noble work. That is why the president must be above reproach: He must not have been married more than once. He must be temperate, discreet, courteous, hospitable, a good teacher, not a heavy drinker, not hot-tempered, but kind and peaceable. He must not be a lover of money. He must be a man who manages his family well and brings up his children well. How could anyone who can't manage his own  family be given responsibility to manage God's family? He should not be a new convert in case he becomes full of pride. The Church of the living God is God's family. The Church is the guardian of the truth
Jesus, please give the Church good leaders

Listen

John 1.1-14: From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word. But to everyone who did accept him, he gave power to become children of God.
Jesus, please help me understand how you are the Word-made-flesh

Fri Feb 12

My special wish for the New Year is that Covid-19 will be brought under control in the whole world, especially Hong Kong, and that people can get back to normal living as soon as possible. With an extra hope for homeless people: that in the coming year they will have a home!

Happy Niu Year! (for the Year of the Ox - "Niu" is "ox" in Mandarin!)

Tonight, 7pm HK time, RTHK TV report on work of MercyHK in Jordan/Yau Ma Tei - here ( will be available at same link, after the live broadcast)

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
202. Lack of dialogue means that in these individual sectors people are concerned not for the common good, but for the benefits of power or, at best, for ways to impose their own ideas. Round tables thus become mere negotiating sessions, in which individuals attempt to seize every possible advantage, rather than cooperating in the pursuit of the common good. The heroes of the future will be those who can break with this unhealthy mindset and determine respectfully to promote truthfulness, aside from personal interest. God willing, such heroes are quietly emerging, even now, in the midst of our society

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

LNY Eve:
I wish all dear readers a Happy Lunar Niu Year!

Today is a good day to pray for everyone with the Covid-19 virus, because today is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes ... World Day of the Sick - for which Pope Francis has published a special letter, here

True story: a few days ago I received an email from a man I'd never met. He had been to a birthday party where the host gave each guest a red packet containing HK$2,000 to give to a poor person of their choice. The kind man, a Christian, had heard about the work of MercyHK and asked me to give the packet to a poor person of my choice. The man gave me the envelope yesterday afternoon and last night I gave it to a homeless lady with a very serious medical condition staying at the Alhambra Building in a room rented by MercyHK.  God bless the birthday host, the kind man and the sick lady!

Isaiah 62-66: The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

Revelation 12.1-6: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with 12 stars. She was giving birth to a child, and she cried out in the pain of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared: a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the child. The woman gave birth to a son, the ruler of all nations. The son was taken straight up to heaven, to God on his throne. The woman escaped to safety in the desert, to a place prepared for her by God.
Jesus, protect us from Satan who goes round like a hungry lion wanting to eat us
 Listen

John 2.1-11: Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold about 35 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus
Jesus,  help me to do whatever you tell me to do

Reflection on the above readings: Without Mary's request, Jesus would not have changed water to wine. Our prayer requests also can get "water" (e.g. sickness) changed to wine (good health)

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
205.
The internet, in particular, offers immense possibilities for encounter and solidarity. This is something truly good, a gift from God. We need constantly to ensure that present-day forms of communication are in fact guiding us to generous encounter with others, to honest pursuit of the whole truth, to service, to closeness to the underprivileged and to the promotion of the common good. As the Bishops of Australia have pointed out, we cannot accept "a digital world designed to exploit our weaknesses and bring out the worst in people".

Sirach 42-43: What an amazing world we live in! The Creator sure did a good job programming everything! Great is the Lord who made the sun, the moon and stars. What a beautiful creature is the rainbow! The seasons, the rain, the snow, lightning and thunder: all proclaim the glory of God. How great is God who has made such an amazing universe. How can we praise and honor him enough?
Dear God, thank you for creating the world. Please help us live the way you want us to live

My recording of this reading

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Listen

1 Timothy 1.18-2.8: Timothy, my son, as I give you advice for practical issues, remember how the church elders prayed over you that you would be a good leader. My first bit of advice is that there should be prayers offered for everyone, especially for kings and others in authority, so that we can live our life of faith in peace and quiet. God wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. There is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for everyone. In every place, I want believers to lift up their hands in reverent prayer
God our Father, through Jesus your Son, I ask a blessing on the leaders of our world, especially the leaders of my own country
