Tues March 2

I spent most of yesterday at Tai Lam women's prison .... and came away as usual with the wish that more could be done to use prisoners' information to stop/catch the people who recruited/deceived them to get involved in drug trafficking and other offences. Sadly, Customs officers and police are usually too busy or too whatever to follow up on information. This is one of the issues my NGO Voice for Prisoners is trying to do something about.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Isaiah 26-27: Trust in the Lord for ever, for the Lord is an everlasting Rock. Lord, we trust in you, we hope in you. At night our hearts long for you. Lord, when we shelter under your protection you give us peace.
Lord, please help us trust you more

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Listen

2 Timothy 3.2-5: For sure, some people will be self-centered and greedy; disobedient and ungrateful to parents; heartless, difficult to get along with; slanderers, profligates and enemies of everything that is good. They will keep up the outward appearance of religion, but will have rejected its inner power. Have nothing to do with people like that
Jesus, may my faith be real, not just something external

Listen

Mark 2.23-28: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry.
They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees.  So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. Go and learn the meaning of these words 'What I want is mercy, not superficial external offerings'. I am Master of the Sabbath."

Jesus, please help me understand that love is more important than law.

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The last 2 readings have a common theme: the problem of religion being just something external ... and not something in the heart

After Tai Lam prison yesterday I got a mini-bus to Tuen Mun MTR .... where I bought a drink and tuna roll for a late lunch. When lady behind counter was processing my purchase she pointed to a biscuit of some type in special wrapping and asked me "Would you like to buy one of these for your wife"? To which I replied "M'sai m'goi" (no thank you) with a smile  under my face mask

Isaiah 25: On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines. On this mountain he will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in the world today

My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Listen

2 Timothy 2.14-25: Remind everyone to avoid useless debates and discussions. These cause scandal and loss of faith. Be available for the Master to use you for any good work. Focus on goodness, faith, love and peace. Avoid futile speculations which only lead to quarrels. A servant of the Lord is not to engage in quarrels, but should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. Be gentle with anyone you have to correct
Jesus, please help me avoid useless discussions and arguments

Listen

Mark 2.13-17: Jesus went again to the Sea of Galilee. Many people came to him and he taught them there by the sea. Near the sea he saw a tax collector Levi (Matthew) working at the customs house. Jesus said to him "Follow me". He got up and followed him. Levi gave a dinner in his house for Jesus. Sitting with Jesus were some tax collectors and "sinners". In fact Jesus' followers included many tax collectors and "sinners". Some religious leaders asked Jesus' disciples "Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" Jesus himself answered them: "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners."
Jesus, thank you for being a friend of people who are rejected and despised

Sun Feb 28

I spent much time yesterday working on a support letter for a woman from China who has been in prison in HK for 5 years. The woman's application for hearing by Court of Appeal is due to be heard in High Court on March 16. The woman was tricked by Nigerians in Guangzhou to carry Ice from China to Malaysia via HK, and was arrested at HK airport. One of the Nigerians, "IK", features in this video which I made in January 2020 in South Africa with a Johannesburg woman who was forced by IK and his friends to transport drugs from Argentina to Macau ... where she spent 8 years in prison.

c.f. readings for Lent 2

Genesis 22: Abraham loved God very dearly. Once when God put him to the test Abraham was even willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac if that was what God wanted. When God saw Abraham's love and obedience God renewed his promise to make Abraham and Isaac's descendants as many as the stars of heaven.
Dear God, please help us love and obey you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Romans 8.35-39: Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus, even if we are in big trouble of any kind. By the power of Jesus who loves us, we can get through any trouble
Jesus, when I am in trouble, help me remember your love

 Listen

Mark 9.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, how good it is to spend time with you

Coffee with God! - daily readings and reflections

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:230. In a family, parents, grandparents and children all feel at home; no one is excluded. If someone has a problem, even a serious one, even if he brought it upon himself, the rest of the family comes to his assistance; they support him. His problems are theirs. In families, everyone contributes to the common purpose; everyone works for the common good, not denying each person's individuality but encouraging and supporting it. They may quarrel, but there is something that does not change: the family bond. Family disputes are always resolved afterwards. The joys and sorrows of each of its members are felt by all. That is what it means to be a family! If only we could view our political opponents or neighbours in the same way that we view our children or our spouse, mother or father! How good would this be!

Isaiah 20-24: Trust in the Lord, not in military might. Israel is going the wrong way in forgetting God's protection. It has no thought for its Maker, no eyes for him who shaped everything long ago. The reason why the earth is without rain and crops
is that people have forgotten their Creator

Lord, please increase my trust in you, and help all nations remember you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101:
My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

Listen

2 Timothy 2.2-9: You have heard everything I teach in public. Hand it on to reliable people so that they in turn will be able to teach others. Put up with your share of difficulties like a good soldier of Christ Jesus, like an athlete who keeps all the rules, like a hard-working farmer. Remember the Good News that I carry: "Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David". On account of this Good News I am chained up like a criminal. But no-one can chain up the Good News
Jesus, help people who are in prison on account of the Good News

Listen

Mark 2.1-12: After some time Jesus returned to Capernaum. Crowds quickly gathered at the house where he was staying. While he was preaching inside the house, four men carried a paralytic on a stretcher to the front door. They couldn't get in, because of the crowd, so they went up on the roof, took off some of the roof covering, and lowered the stretcher in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic "Your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders present in the crowd  thought to themselves "Who does this man think he is? Only God can forgive sins". Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them "Which is easier? To say 'Your sins are forgiven' or 'Get up and walk'? But to show you that I have authority to forgive sins I now say: get up, pick up your stretcher and go home." The man got up, picked up his stretcher and walked out in front of everyone. The crowd said "We have never seen anything like this".
Jesus, please heal my friend.....(name)....who is a paralytic

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
229. The Bishops of South Africa have pointed out that true reconciliation is achieved proactively, "by forming a new society, a society based on service to others, rather than the desire to dominate; a society based on sharing what one has with others, rather than the selfish scramble by each for as much wealth as possible; a society in which the value of being together as human beings is ultimately more important than any lesser group, whether it be family, nation, race or culture"

Isaiah 13-19: God will punish the world for its evil-doing. Then  peoples' hearts will turn back to their Creator. Then people will no longer worship idols made by human hands. Instead, people will look towards their Creator. The nations will be converted and know the Lord. Egypt and Assyria will be blessed like Israel. The Lord will give his blessing in these words: "Blessed be my people Egypt, blessed be Assyria my creation, and blessed be Israel my heritage".
Lord, please help all Middle East countries, especially Israel, Egypt, Iran and Iraq, to be friends

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Listen

2 Timothy 1.6-8: I remind you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I prayed over you with the laying on of hands. God's gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love and self-control. Never be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord. Like me and with me, put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News
Jesus, help me put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News

Listen

Mark 1.40-45: A leper came to Jesus and on his knees pleaded "If you want to, you can heal me". Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!" The leprosy left him at that moment and he was healed. Jesus told the man not to tell people what had happened (in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use him politically).  But the man told everyone. Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town (for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places. Even so, people from all around the district would come to him.
Jesus, please heal people who are lepers

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Never once in the Gospels did Jesus ever say "sorry, no healing ... your illness is your cross to carry". Rather, Jesus regarded illness as an enemy to be defeated.

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
227. Truth is an inseparable companion of justice and mercy. All three together are essential to building peace; each, moreover, prevents the other from being altered. Truth should not lead to revenge, but rather to reconciliation and forgiveness.

Isaiah 10-12Woe to legislators who issue unjust laws, laws which exploit poor people. A day of reckoning is coming when unjust legislators will answer to the Lord. The Lord will send a good and just king to rescue the poor. A shoot will spring from the stock of Jesse, on him the spirit of the Lord will rest, a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge, a spirit of love and respect for the Lord. He will judge justly and the land will know peace. The country will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. Exiles will return to their homeland. Then we will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation, for great in our midst will be the Holy One of Israel.
Lord, please help governments to do more for poor people

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples know and love you

Recording

2 Timothy 1.1-5: From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy, dear child of mine in the faith, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord. I always remember your sincere faith. It came first to live in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and now in yourself
Jesus, thank you for parents who pass on the faith to their children

Listen

Mark 1.35-39: The next morning, long before dawn, Jesus left the house and went off to a lonely place to pray. When Simon and the other fishermen found him, they said "Everyone is looking for you". Jesus replied "We must go to the nearby towns,
so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came
". Jesus went all through Galilee, preaching in the prayer halls and casting out devils.

Jesus, may every town on earth welcome you and hear your message

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings:  Jesus' day began with prayer. This should be the case for all Christians.

---------------

Yesterday at Yim Tin Tsai Island, I visited the salt pans ... and learnt a lot about the production of salt from sea water (see photos in link at top of today's menu). The most important item for production is ... the sun ....two weeks sunny weather needed for drying the salt water. And ... when there is rain and the pools are diluted by rain water, the pools have to be emptied and a fresh lot of sea water used.

Isaiah 9: The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light. On those who live in a land of deep shadow, a light has shone. For the yoke that was weighing on them, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken and removed. For there is a child born for us, a son given to us and dominion is laid on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonder-Counselor, Mighty-God,
Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.

Lord, Prince of Peace, thank you for the peace and hope and joy of your friendship and love

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Listen

1 Timothy 6.17-19: Warn people who are rich in this world's goods that they are not to look down on others. Tell them not to set their hopes on money, but on God who, out of his riches, gives us all we need for happiness. Tell rich people to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will have a healthy account in the Bank of Heaven
Jesus, please help rich people do more to help poor people

Listen

Mark 1.29-34: Jesus  went to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus took her by the hand and helped her up. The fever left her,  and she began to serve her visitors. That night all the local sick people were brought to Jesus. He healed many who were suffering from all kinds of diseases. He also cast out many devils.
Jesus, please heal (..name..) who is sick
