Yesterday afternoon, after collecting the day's mail from Kowloon Central Post Office (which contained one last minute application!) I went to the Chinese University office in Admiralty to enrol a final batch of prisoners for courses this semester. Yesterday was the final registration day for the coming semester.

Helping MercyHK rent rooms for homeless people - Carousell:  Shop 1   Shop 2 (updated lists) *** Feb financial report for MercyHK is here *** Yesterday morning at McDonald's I had a long chat with a man who stays in accommodation for him provided by MercyHK at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei. Our conversation was mainly about how to find some part time work each day for him and his room companion. Tomorrow afternoon the two of them will try something we talked about yesterday morning!

Thank you Jesus for giving Pope Francis a safe trip to Iraq! May his visit bear much fruit, especially the fruit of peace. And please protect from Covid-19 all who attended functions of the visit! (and see   below!)

Isaiah 43-45: The Lord says: Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are mine. If you travel over the seas, I will be with you. If you travel on great rivers, I will protect you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior. They are ignorant, those who carry around an idol made of wood, those who pray to a lump of wood that cannot hear. Turn to me and be saved all peoples of the world.
Lord, please help me be more aware of your protection each day and night

My recording of this reading

Psalm 109-110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with  words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.
Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Listen

Titus 2.11-14: God's grace has made salvation available for the whole human race. We must give up everything that does not lead to God. We must delete our worldly ambitions. We must be self-restrained and live good lives here in this present world, while we wait in hope for the blessings that will come with the Coming of the glory of our God and savior Christ Jesus. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free from wickedness, and to purify us so that we would have no ambition except to do good
Jesus, please help me give up everything that does not lead to you

Listen

Mark 4.35-41: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. A sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up and said "Save us, Lord, we are sinking". Jesus stood up, and ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. Jesus' friends said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Jesus, please calm the storms in my life, my family, our world
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: No "storm" - international, national, local, family, personal - cannot be calmed by Jesus

As I waited on an MTR platform for train to Kowloon Tong and then to Tai Wai yesterday afternoon, I started using Google to check if the Pope was on his way back to Rome after his visit to Iraq. When I got on the train, the train's news video was showing the Pope in Iraq! This so distracted me that I forgot to get off at Kowloon Tong and had to retrace my steps from the next station!

Yesterday at a canteen near MercyHK's shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan, I had lunch with 4 ex-prisoners who are staying at the Mercy Centre on Cheung Chau Island. One of the greatest joys for a prison chaplain is to meet up with former prisoners on the "outside". One big problem: it's extra hard for ex-prisoners to find a job. If anyone would like to employ an ex-prisoner, please contact me: jdwomi@gmail.com

Isaiah 41-42: The Lord says to his people Israel: "I have chosen you. I have not rejected you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried. I am your God. I give you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison".
Lord, please help me understand how "my servant" is Jesus

My recording of this reading

Psalm 108: My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise. Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today. Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations. With your help we shall be brave.
Lord, we need your help every day

Titus 2.1-10: It's your job to preach the behavior that goes with sound doctrine: the older men should be reserved, dignified, moderate, sound in faith and love. The older women should be teachers of good behavior, avoiding scandalmongering and too much wine. They should be an example to the younger women in their love for their husbands and children. Younger men should be moderate, with yourself setting an example of sincerity for them. Slaves should be obedient to their masters, and avoid petty thieving
Jesus,  help me be a good person, a good Christian

Mark 4.1-20: One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. Jesus explained the story: People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure
are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.

Jesus, please help me be good seed!

The Pope removed his shoes before entering Sistani's room. The Muslim cleric, who normally remains seated for visitors, stood to greet Francis at the door of his room - a rare honour. From this report about the Pope's visit to Iraq

I spent yesterday morning at the desk catching up on office jobs .... including many letters from prisoners. There's talk of a trial system to allow prisoners to use email to communicate with their families ... I hope that day comes soon!

c.f. readings for Lent 3

Exodus 20: The Ten Commandments given by God to Moses:

1: I am the Lord your God. Do not worship anyone or anything else.

2: Use my name with respect. Do not insult my name.

3: Make the Sabbath Day a holy day each week.

4: Honor your father and your mother.

5: Do not kill.

6: Do not commit adultery.

7: Do not steal.

8: Do not tell lies.

9: Do not lust after someone else's wife.

10: Do not desire what belongs to someone else.

Dear God, please help us to put these commandments into practice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: (sun + law = the "sun-in-law" psalm)
The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands.
The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

 Listen

1 Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But for us it is God's power to save. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those who love him.
Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my faith in you

John 2.13-22: Just before the Passover Feast, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple he saw people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, with money changers sitting at their counting tables. Jesus made a whip out of some cord, then drove the sellers out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well. He scattered the money changers' coins, knocked their tables over, and said to the pigeon sellers "Take all of this out of here and stop turning my Father's house into a market". Some religious leaders asked him "What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?" Jesus answered "Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up". The leaders replied "It has taken 46 years to build this sanctuary". But Jesus was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when he rose from the dead, his disciples remembered his words.
Jesus, please don't let churches and prayer centers become centers of commerce

Reflection on the above readings: The Jewish people who received the Ten Commandments came to realise the wisdom of God's law (Psalm) ... that the constant remembering and referring to God's law helps us navigate our way through the ocean of life

Isaiah 36-40: "Console my people, console them" says the Lord. A voice cries out "Prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord. Make a straight highway for our God across every desert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all people will see the Lord's glory." Go up on a high mountain, joyful messenger to Zion. Shout with a loud voice, joyful messenger to Jerusalem. Shout to the towns of Judah "Here is your God".
Lord, please help me prepare your way into my heart, into my family, into my world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south. Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things. Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons. Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

Titus 1.1-9: From Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to Titus, true child of mine in the faith we share, wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Saviour. The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to appoint elders in every town: each of them a man of irreproachable character, married only once, not arrogant or hot-tempered, not a heavy drinker, not out to make money. A man who is hospitable and a friend of all that is good; sensible, devout, with a firm grasp of the Good News, a good teacher, able to refute people who argue against sound doctrine.
Jesus, please help all pastors be good "elders"

Mark 3: Jesus went back to Capernaum. Such a crowd gathered that he could not even have a meal. When his family  heard about such things, they set out to take care of  him, thinking that he was crazy. His mother and brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent in a message asking for him. Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for you".  Jesus replied "Who are my mother and brothers?" Then looking round at the people sitting in a circle about him, he said "Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother".
Jesus, please help me to do your will, even if people sometimes think I'm crazy

Isaiah 35: Strengthen all weary hands, steady all trembling knees, and say to all faint hearts "Courage! Do not be afraid. The Lord is coming to save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy. Exiles will return to Zion shouting for joy, everlasting joy on their faces. Joy and gladness will go with them. Sorrow and lament will be ended.
Lord, please heal the friends I know who are blind, deaf, dumb ....

My recording of this reading

Psalm 106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right, who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt, they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them. But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour, God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.
O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

Isaiah 31-32How foolish are people who trust in armaments but never bother to consult the Lord. Help and salvation come from the Lord who says: "Once more I will send the good rain. Then shall the wilderness be fertile land and fertile land will become a forest. In the wilderness justice will come to live and integrity in the fertile land. Integrity will bring peace, and justice will bring security. My people will live in a peaceful home, in safe houses, in quiet dwellings."

2 Timothy 4.1-5: In the presence of God our Father and of Christ Jesus, I give you this command: proclaim the Good News and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. February financial report for MercyHK is here. Notice that our little second hand shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan, had sales of $57,443. This is outstanding considering the dearth of people on the streets because of Covid restrictions. The shop's rent is $20,000 ... so that's an excellent result to help us provide accommodation for homeless people. God bless everyone who helps at the shop and all who have provided items for sale

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:

Isaiah 28-30: God says: "I will punish priests and prophets who mislead the people. Their mouths utter lies. They honor me only with lip-service while their hearts are far from me. Religion has become just a mental exercise, just a series of human laws." The Lord appeals to everyone: trust in him and cease to do evil. Salvation is found in conversion and tranquility. Strength is found in complete trust in the Lord.
Lord, please help us honor you with our hearts as well as our heads

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

2 Timothy 3.12-16: Anyone who tries to live a sincere Christian life will be persecuted. Stay faithful to what you have been taught and know to be true. Remember who your teachers were, and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the Scriptures. From the Scriptures you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and can be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people's lives and teaching them to be holy
Jesus, please give all Christians, especially pastors, a passion for the Scriptures

Mark 3.1-6: Jesus again went to a prayer hall on the Sabbath. In the hall was a man with a withered hand. The religious leaders were watching Jesus to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, hoping for something to use against him. Jesus said to the man with the withered hand "Stand in the middle of the hall".  Then he said to the religious leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good?" They remained silent. Grieved that they were so obstinate, Jesus looked angrily round at them, and said to the man "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out and it was healed. The leaders left and began to plot how to get rid of Jesus.
Jesus, don't let my heart become obstinate
