MercyHK's new meeting room - "The Doctor Jesus Centre" - at 187 Temple Street, Jordan is now in the setting up stage ....with meetings being held the past two days to discuss how to prepare it for multi-purpose use: office space, meeting area, activity area, space for prison books ... and ... most importantly... a prayer area to pray for healing.

Since last night I am at Seung Shui for an O.M.I. monthly retreat ... which finishes with lunch today ....after which I hope to visit nearby Lo Wu women's prison.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Jeremiah 1: Jeremiah lived in a village not far from Jerusalem. Jeremiah's father was a priest. God said to Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. I have appointed you as prophet to the nations." Jeremiah said to God: "Lord, I do not know how to speak. I am so young." God then touched Jeremiah's mouth and said: "I now put my words into your mouth. Go and tell the people everything I ask you to speak. Do not be dismayed by anyone. I am making you strong. You must confront Judah's kings, priests and people. They will oppose you, but will not overcome you,
for I am with you."

Lord, please give special courage to people who speak your message for the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.
Lord, please protect poor people from being exploited by rich people

Listen

Hebrews 8-9: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel". Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions,
to help us in our life of dedication to the living God.

Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart and protect me

Listen

Mark 7.24-30: Jesus went to the district of Tyre. A foreign woman fell at his feet and begged him to expel a devil from her daughter. Jesus said "The children (= Jews)  should be fed first. It's not right to give the children's food to the house dogs (= foreigners)". She replied "Ah yes, Sir, but the house dogs under the table can eat the children's scraps". Jesus said to her "For expressing such great faith, you can go home happy. The devil has gone out of your daughter".  She went home and found the child lying on a bed, and the devil gone
Jesus, please give sick people more faith in you

Mon March 22

Please check this post of Camay, a stage-four cancer patient who, after special prayers on March 12, has shown remarkable recovery

Early last night as I headed to a canteen for dinner, two young drug addicts I know asked me to get them something to eat. So they joined me at the canteen .... their first food for the day. They'd had a busy day, shoplifting, then selling their items to get money to buy heroin. A local chemist buys some of the items they obtain from supermarkets. After the meal I said a prayer with them to the One who is healing Camay, above.

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
258. War can easily be chosen by invoking all sorts of allegedly humanitarian, defensive or precautionary excuses, and even resorting to the manipulation of information. In recent decades, every single war has been ostensibly "justified". The Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks of the possibility of legitimate defence by means of military force, which involves demonstrating that certain "rigorous conditions of moral legitimacy" have been met.
Yet it is easy to fall into an overly broad interpretation of this potential right. In this way, some would also wrongly justify even "preventive" attacks or acts of war that can hardly avoid entailing "evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated"

Isaiah 62-66: The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good
Lord, may your peace be in our hearts and homes

Listen

Hebrews 7.1-28: Melchizedek was king of Salem and a priest of God. He blessed Abraham. Abraham gave Melchizedek 10% of all he had. Melchizedek's priesthood  continued down the ages in people dedicated to the service of God. It reached its perfection in the Son of God, the Eternal High Priest. The Son of God, our Lord, did not come from the priestly tribe of Levi. Everyone knows he came from the tribe of Judah. This is because he established a new priesthood, coming not from Levi, but from Melchizedek. This is why the prophecy was made of him "You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, for ever". Jesus' priestly power to save us is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him
Jesus, Eternal High Priest, please help all pastors and priests be more like you every day

Listen

Mark 7.1-23: Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."
Jesus, please  clean my heart

Reflection on the above readings: The words "I love you" are meaningless if they do not come from the heart

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
257. Since conditions that favour the outbreak of wars are once again increasing, I can only reiterate that "war is the negation of all rights and a dramatic assault on the environment. If we want true integral human development for all, we must work tirelessly to avoid war between nations and peoples. To this end, there is a need to ensure the uncontested rule of law and tireless recourse to negotiation, mediation and arbitration, as proposed by the Charter of the United Nations, which constitutes truly a fundamental juridical norm"

c.f. readings for Lent 5

Jeremiah 30-31: God told Jeremiah to tell the people these words: "I will restore you to health. I will heal your wounds. I have loved you with an everlasting love. Strong and constant is my love for you. I will bring back the exiles and save them. I will change their sorrow into joy. The days are coming when I will make a new agreement with my people. Deep within their hearts I will plant love of my Law. I will be their God and they will be my people. I will forgive all their sins."
Lord, please plant love of you deep within my heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

 Listen

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. He himself was tempted in every way, but did not sin. Let us be confident in approaching his throne of grace. He will give us grace when we are in need of help
Jesus, our high priest, help me when I'm weak

John 12.23-33: Jesus said to his apostles Andrew and Philip "Now the time has come for me to be glorified. Unless a wheat grain goes into the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain. But if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Now sentence is being passed on this world. Now Satan is to be defeated. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all people to myself". By these words, Jesus indicated the kind of death he would die.
Jesus, lifted up on the Cross, you are the Saviour of the world

Sat March 20

Yesterday morning I was a guest speaker at Sai Kung Catholic Secondary School - God bless the school for its hospitality! From Sai Kung I went to Tokwawan for the blessing and opening of the Oblate Shop in one of HK's poorest areas, aiming to do more for the poor. Then back in Jordan, with Eddie Chan (Chairman of St Peter's Association) I signed, on behalf of MercyHK, a contract for a mezzanine floor apartment next to MercyHK's shop in Jordan. The new premises will be for multi-purpose use ... meetings, office space for social worker and volunteers, storage area for books for prisons ... and a prayer room to pray for healing ... with the last objective producing the name for the premises: Doctor Jesus Centre

Also yesterday there was good news from the High Court: a Malaysian woman who has been in detention for two years waiting trial for a drug trafficking charge was granted bail by a kind judge. Thank you Jesus!

Coffee with God! - daily readings and reflections

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:255. There are two extreme situations that may come to be seen as solutions in especially dramatic circumstances, without realizing that they are false answers that do not resolve the problems they are meant to solve and ultimately do no more than introduce new elements of destruction in the fabric of national and global society. These are war and the death penalty.

Isaiah 61: The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up broken hearts, to proclaim liberty to captives, freedom to those in prison, to comfort people who mourn, to replace their sadness with praise. I exult for joy in the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God, for as the earth makes plants to grow,
and as a garden makes seeds spring up, so the Lord will make integrity and praise spring up in the sight of the nations.

Lord, please give comfort and courage to people who are sad

My recording of this reading

Psalms 120-121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever. Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night
Listen

Hebrews 6.11-19: May every one of you persevere in your Christian life. Never give up. Remember how Abraham persevered in following God, despite so many difficulties. Take a firm grip on the hope that is held out to us by God. This hope is an anchor for us, a lifeline going right up to heaven
Jesus, you are my anchor. You are my lifeline

Listen

Mark 6.53-56: When Jesus got out of the boat on the other side of the lake, people recognized him and news of his presence spread quickly. From all around that area, sick people were brought to him. Wherever he went, to village or town or farm, they laid down the sick in open spaces, begging him to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. All those who touched him were healed
Jesus, please heal my sick friends ...(names)... by letting them, through prayer, touch your clothing

Today, by design on the Feast of St Joseph, the O.M.I. China Delegation is holding the blessing of a second hand shop in Tokwawan, near the Oblate Primary School .... with the same aims as MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan: to raise money for helping poor people, to be a social centre where people can get help, to protect the environment by promoting the recycling of goods. Jesus, please bless the new shop!

251. Those who truly forgive do not forget. Instead, they choose not to yield to the same destructive force that caused them so much suffering. They break the vicious circle; they halt the advance of the forces of destruction. They choose not to spread in society the spirit of revenge that will sooner or later return to take its toll.

c.f. readings for Feast of St Joseph

2 Samuel 7: After David settled into his palace and the land enjoyed peace, David thought about building a temple for the Lord. Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David: "I will establish your dynasty for ever. But it will be your son, not yourself, who will build a temple for me." David praised God: "Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have helped me so much and promised me so much? May my House continue in your presence for ever. May you bless my House forever."
Jesus, Son of David, give peace to our world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 134: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord; through all ages my mouth will proclaim your truth. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever,  that your truth is firmly established as the heavens. "I have made a covenant with my chosen one;  I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your dynasty for ever, and set up your throne through all ages".
Jesus, Son of David, may your kingdom of peace come in our troubled world

Recording

Revelation 22.16-20: "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to make these revelations to you for the sake of the churches. I am of David's line, the Root of David, the Bright Star of the Morning". The Spirit and the Bride say: "Come". Let all who want eternal life say: "Come". Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Jesus, Son of David, come into our world!

Recording

Matthew 1.18-24: This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.' When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do.
Jesus, Son of David, save your people from war and strife

Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

Correction to popular use:  Joseph was the step-father, not foster-father of Jesus, because Joseph was the husband of Mary, and Mary was Jesus' biological mother. c.f. What's the difference between foster father and step father?

Last Friday I went to the home of a woman with Stage Four cancer of the lung. With her parents and a family friend I prayed for the woman. Since then her condition has shown much improvement. 250. Forgiving does not mean forgetting. Or better, in the face of a reality that can in no way be denied, relativized or concealed, forgiveness is still possible. In the face of an action that can never be tolerated, justified or excused, we can still forgive. In the face of something that cannot be forgotten for any reason, we can still forgive ((c.f. Isaiah 60Arise, shine out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you, though the rest of the world is still in darkness. The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. People from other lands are coming to you,
bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light. Then your days of mourning will be ended.

Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my life

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people

Mark 6.45-52: After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2 fish, Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake.
Jesus stayed to send the crowds away. Then he went up into the hills to pray. When it was dark, the boat was far from land, but battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind. Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat. He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid." Then he got into the boat, and the wind stopped.

Jesus, please give me courage by helping me remember that you are in my boat (my life)

Pope Francis - Fratelli Tutti:
249. Nowadays, it is easy to be tempted to turn the page, to say that all these things happened long ago and we should look to the future. For God's sake, no! We can never move forward without remembering the past; we do not progress without an honest and unclouded memory. We need to "keep alive the flame of collective conscience, bearing witness to succeeding generations to the horror of what happened", because that witness "awakens and preserves the memory of the victims, so that the conscience of humanity may rise up in the face of every desire for dominance and destruction"

Isaiah 57-58: Tell my people their faults, tell the House of Jacob its sins. Tell them that their fasting is a sham. Fasting and injustice cannot go together. This is the sort of fast that pleases the Lord: breaking unjust fetters, sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering and clothing the homeless poor. Do this and you will find healing and peace. Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.
Lord, please help me do more to help poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Hebrews 3.1-13: Focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our religion. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just like Moses. Take care not to turn away from the living God. Keep encouraging one another, so that sin does not cause you to turn away from God
Jesus, help me stay focused on you

Mark 6.30-44: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please help the starving people of the world
