MercyHK's new multi-purpose centre at 187 Temple Street, Jordan, is due to be blessed at the end of the month. Most of the renovation work has been completed and furnishings have begun to arrive. The centre is named "The Doctor Jesus Centre" since its most important section is a room for praying for healing.

Jeremiah 24-29: For 23 years Jeremiah spoke the message of the Lord, calling on people to do good and turn away from evil. But the people, especially the leaders, refused to listen to Jeremiah. They eventually arrested Jeremiah and planned to kill him. Jeremiah also sent a message to the exiles in Babylon. But they too refused his message.
Lord, please give me some of Jeremiah's courage and faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. O let my tongue cleave to my mouth if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys.
Lord, please help people who have been exiled from their homeland

Listen

James 3.3-10: When a bit is put into a horse's mouth, the whole animal is under control. A tiny rudder can control a big ship. In the same way, if you can control your tongue, you can control every other part of yourself. The tongue is a whole wicked world in itself. It is so hard to control. We use it to bless God, but we also use it to curse people made in God's image
Jesus, please help me control my tongue!

Listen

Mark 9.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, how good it is to spend time with you

Jeremiah 21-23: Jerusalem was under siege by the Chaldaeans. The Lord told Jeremiah to tell the leaders of Jerusalem to surrender. But the leaders of Jerusalem did not obey Jeremiah's words. So the Lord got Jeremiah to say these words: "Woe to the shepherds who allow my sheep to be scattered and killed. You have not taken care of my sheep. Therefore I will raise up a leader who will be wise and just. He will be a good shepherd of my people."
Lord, please help our leaders to be good shepherds

My recording of this reading

Psalm 136: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his great love is without end. It was his wisdom which made the skies,
for his great love is without end. It was he who made the sun, moon and stars, for his great love is without end. It was he who rescued and protected his people Israel, for his great love is without end. He gives food to all living things, for his great love is without end. To the God of heaven give thanks, for his great love is without end.

We praise you, Lord, for your great love is without end

Listen

James 2.14-26: Faith and good works need to go together. Suppose someone is lacking clothes and food, and you say "I wish you well" and do nothing to help them. What good is that? Faith without good deeds is useless
Jesus, please help me put my faith into action by good deeds

Listen

Mark 8.27-38: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied"Some say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And who do you say I am?"  Peter answered "You are the Christ". Jesus then explained to them how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

c.f. readings for Easter 2

Acts 4.32-35: The apostles continued to witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power. The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul. They willingly shared everything they had with people who were in need. Joseph was a Temple minister who had been born in Cyprus. He sold a field he owned, and gave the proceeds to the apostles. The apostles called him "Barnabas" ("Son of Encouragement")
Jesus, help me to be more caring and sharing

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good.  Your love has no end

 Listen

1 John 4.20 - 5.13: Anyone who says "I love God" but hates his brother, is a liar. A man who does not love the brother he can see cannot love God whom he has never seen. Who can overcome the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. You who believe in the Son of God have eternal life.
Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God

 Listen

John 20.21-29: That same Sunday evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had gathered, for fear of the religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before them, saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the 12 apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had seen the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I refuse to believe". Eight days later, the group was again in the same house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again appeared and stood before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he said to Thomas "Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but believe".  Thomas replied "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said "You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe"
Jesus, my Lord and my God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in your friendship

Reflection on the above readings: "My Lord and my God" is a beautiful prayer to use when showing reverence to the Tabernacle on entering/leaving a church, when looking up at the Host/Chalice at the Consecration time of the Mass, when receiving Holy Communion  ....and (Pope Francis) when touching Jesus by helping a poor person!

Jeremiah 18-20: Some officials decided to get rid of Jeremiah. They did not want to listen to his message any more. "Come on,", they said, "let us make a case against him." Jeremiah prayed to God: "Lord, you know that people are plotting against me.
Please help me and keep me safe." One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks for a day near the Temple. Again Jeremiah prayed to God: "You have seduced me, Lord. You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people. This has made me a laughing-stock. Being your messenger has caused me insult  all the day long. At one stage I even thought of not speaking your message any more. But then I felt a fire burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you. I just had to speak your message."

Lord,  please increase my love for you. Please give me more courage to speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet

My recording of this reading

Psalm 135: Praise the name of the Lord, praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people who worship idols to know and love you

Listen

James 2.1-13: Don't try to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions between classes of people. Suppose two men come into your prayer meeting, one beautifully dressed and with a gold ring; the other poor and in shabby clothes. If you welcome the rich man, and look down on the poor man, you are making a big mistake. It was those who are poor according to the world that God chose to be rich in faith. So, never make distinctions between classes of people.
Everyone is your neighbor. Love your neighbor as yourself. There will be judgment without mercy for people who have not been merciful. But merciful people need have no fear of judgment

Jesus, help me treat everyone equally and fairly. No favorites

Mark 16.9-15:

Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala from whom he had cast out seven devils. She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, and told them. But they did not believe her when they heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him. After this, he showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into the country. These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either. Lastly, he showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table. He reproached them for their incredulity and obstinacy, because they had refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation."

Reflection on the above readings: At the Crucifixion, only one of the 11 apostles (John) showed up. Then when Jesus rose from the dead, the 11 at first refused to believe. Jesus sure chose a dud group?!

Jeremiah 18: The Lord told Jeremiah to go to the house of the potter. At the potter's house, Jeremiah watched the potter working. Sometimes a vessel he was making wasn't shaped properly. So the potter would take the clay and start again and shape the clay into a new vessel. Then the Lord told Jeremiah: "The House of Israel is clay, I am  the potter. I  keep on trying to form Israel into a holy nation."
Lord, you are the potter, we are the clay - the work of your hands. Please mould us into what you want us to become
My recording of this reading

Psalm 134: O come, bless the Lord, all you who serve the Lord, who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Lift up your hands to heaven and bless the Lord through the night. May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who made both heaven and earth.
Lord, please protect my family tonight and every night

James 1.26-27: Don't go thinking you're "religious" while your tongue is out of control. That's the wrong idea of religion. Genuine religion, in the eyes of God our Father is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows, and staying clear of bad values
Jesus, help me control my tongue ... and help me do more to help the poor

John 21.1-14: Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have breakfast"
Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With you, 153 fish. Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life

Thu April 8

Two nights ago using Google I could not find a HK shop that sells world maps. I need a world map, a map of China and a map of HK to encourage users of the new Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street (due to open at the end of this month) to care and pray for the world/China/HK. Yesterday as I walked along Des Voeux Street in Central, I saw a "Stationery" sign on the front of a building on the other side of the street. So I checked it out and hit gold: Yat Fat Stationers, 2/F, 44 Des Voeux Street had the very items I wanted: 3 large Chinese/English maps!

Jeremiah 16-17The Lord will bring back Israel's exiles, back to the land he gave to our ancestors. Lord, my strength, my stronghold, all the nations will come to you and acknowledge that you alone are God in all the earth.
Let all the peoples praise you, O God, let all the peoples praise you

Recording

Psalm 133: How good and how pleasant it is when people live in unity. It is like precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard. It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the heights of Zion. For there the Lord gives his blessing, life for ever.
Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity.

James 1.19-25: Be quick to listen, and slow to speak, and even slower to get angry. God's goodness is never helped by human anger. Accept and submit to the word which has been planted in your heart and can save your soul. Do what the word tells you. Don't just listen to it. Actively put God's word into practice in your life
Jesus, help me put your word into practice in my life each day

Listen

Luke 24.36-49: The disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this power from on high".
Jesus,  increase my faith in your resurrection, and open my mind to  understand the Bible better

Wed April 7

Many times over the past week I have spent much time with drug addicts. Yesterday morning I shared a table at McDonald's with a local Chinese man. After which I helped some Nepal men register at a nearby canteen for a daily free meal sponsored by MercyHK. Drugs are a big problem in most parts of the world, but here in the Jordan-Yau Ma Tei area the number of drug addicts and drug sellers is off the radar. The only effective way to help the addicts is in a drug treatment centre but rarely does an addict agree to go to such a centre. May the Risen Lord give a few of them the grace to go to a centre!

Jeremiah 15: Alas, my mother, for you gave me birth to be a man of strife and dissension for everyone. I neither lend nor borrow, yet everyone curses me. Lord, remember how I suffer insult for your sake. When I heard your word, I devoured it. Your word was my delight and the joy of my heart for you called me to speak your word.
Lord, please increase my love for your word, my love for the Bible

My recording of this reading

Psalm 130: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. If you, O Lord, should record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness. For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for the daybreak. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity
Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Listen

James 1.1-12: From James, servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Greetings to believers scattered around the world. You will always have difficulties and things going wrong. When they happen, praise God for them and patiently keep going. Blessed are people who stand firm when trials come. They have proved themselves, and will win the prize of eternal life which the Lord has promised to those who love him
Jesus, please give me patience and praise when life gets tough

Listen

Luke 24.13-35: That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth,  and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive". Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal, he blessed  some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road, and how they had  recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread
Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Jeremiah 12-14: Lord, you are in our midst, we are called by your name. Please give us help and strength in this time of trouble. Wherever I go I see sadness and despair. Our land has been invaded by the foreign soldier. If I go into the countryside,
I see men killed by the sword. If I go into the city, I see people sick with hunger. O God, you are our hope. For your name's sake, please forgive us and help us.

Lord, please help people whose countries are under occupation by foreign soldiers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 128: O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!
Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

Listen

Hebrews 13.8-21: Jesus Christ is the same today as he was yesterday and as he will be for ever. Do not let yourselves be led astray by strange doctrines that teach a different Jesus. Jesus died outside the city. Let us go to him and share his rejection. Our life in this world is a temporary arrangement, like a tent. We look for a permanent home in the life to come. Keep doing good works and sharing your resources
God of peace, you brought  Jesus back from the dead to be our great Shepherd and Priest. Make me ready to do your will in any kind of good action

Listen

John 20.11-18:
Peter and John went home. Mary Magdalene remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?". Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary" and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard.
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at funerals today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and strength for the days ahead

Reflection on the above readings:  Thine Be the Glory (Easter song - Chinese version very popular in HK)

------------------------------

I shave each morning. I rarely shave a second time. The second last last time I did so was maybe a year or two ago ... I can't remember. But since I was due to help with baptisms and confirmations at last Saturday night's Easter Mass at St Paul's Parish ... with photos being taken ... I had a shave before going to the church so as to look more respectable. But as I walked to the church I thought to myself "You idiot. No need to shave. You'll be wearing a mask"!
