187: Smartone's 5G internet connection was installed yesterday at MercyHK's new centre "The Doctor Jesus Centre" in Temple Street, Jordan. Neither Simon (MercyHK's social work assistant who arranged the installation) or I have ever used 5G .... but we are looking forward to to checking it out! Smartone (= Vodafone) is cheaper (HK$213 per month) and faster than PCCW

Jeremiah
46-52: Jeremiah predicted that the powerful nations involved in
Israel's capture would all fall:
the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites,
the Babylonians and others. Jeremiah also reminded Israel to rely on the help of the Lord
more than the help of other nations: "Our redeemer is strong. The Lord is his name.
He will bring peace to the world". Lord, help us to rely on you
more than on human help
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
146: My soul, give
praise to the Lord.
I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in
princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they
return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are
helped by Jacob's God,
whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven
and earth,
the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives
bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who
gives sight to the blind,
who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who
protects the stranger
and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who
loves the just
but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for
ever,
Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust
and faith in you

1 Peter
1.1-2:
Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ, sends
greetings to the believers living among foreigners. You were chosen by God the Father. You
were made holy by the Spirit. You are obedient to Jesus Christ
and are sprinkled with his blood. Grace and peace be with you more and more

Mark
10.17-27:
A young man asked Jesus
"Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?" Jesus replied "Keep the commandments:
do not kill; do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother;
care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these
commandments.
What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something
really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the
money to the poor,
then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went
away sad,
because he was very rich.
Jesus then said to his disciples
"It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".
Jesus, please don't let riches
endanger my eternal life

Jeremiah
37-45: Jeremiah was arrested and put into a muddy well to
die.
But a good official persuaded the king to free Jeremiah. When the Chaldaeans captured Jerusalem,
they sent many people to Babylon as exiles. Jeremiah was spared from exile
and he kept trying to get the people to accept defeat as God had told them.
But most of the people would not listen to Jeremiah,
even though all his prophecies about defeat had come true. God protected the good officials who had helped Jeremiah.
Lord, please help government
leaders be good,
like the good officials who helped Jeremiah
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
145: I will give you glory, O God my king.
I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works,
shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of
compassion,
slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,
and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words
and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall
and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you
and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him,
who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy
name,
for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love.
Thank you for your love

James
5.13-18: If one of you is in trouble, pray. If you are
happy, sing a psalm. If someone is sick, send for the elders of the
church. They must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and pray
over him.
The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.
Confess your sins to one another, and pray for
one another,
and this will heal you. The heartfelt prayer of a good person is very
powerful. Elijah prayed for rain, and rain came

9-10: Some people brought their little
children to Jesus.
They hoped Jesus would put his hands on the children and bless them.
Jesus' disciples told the people to go away
and not bother Jesus.
But Jesus said "Don't stop the little children from coming to
me". Then he put his hands on them and blessed them. Jesus also said "Anyone who welcomes one
of these little children in my name, welcomes me. But anyone who causes
scandal to one of these little ones, commits a great
crime"
Jesus, please help all children
to know you from their earliest days.
Please don't let parents prevent children from coming to you.
Please heal children who have been scandalized by adults

Acts 3.9-16: When
people saw the former crippled man walking, they couldn't believe their eyes. So
Peter said to them "Why are you so surprised? Do you think John and I made
this cripple walk? It is by our faith in Jesus that this man has been restored
to health. Jesus is the Holy One, the Just One, the
Prince of Life whom you handed over to Pilate for crucifixion. But God
raised him from the dead.

Psalm
4: At
the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O
people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you
will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that
cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and

John 2.3-6: We can be sure we

Luke
24.36-49: The disciples
were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood
among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.
But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and
see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have".
Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing.
So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which
he ate in front of them. Then he opened
their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So you see
how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day rise from
the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be
preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the Father
promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this
power from on high".
Jesus, increase my faith in your resurrection, and open my mind to
understand the Bible better

Jeremiah
36: God told Jeremiah to write down
all the messages he had spoken for God. So Jeremiah got Baruch to make a written record of all his messages.
Baruch wrote the messages on a scroll. Some good officials took the scroll to the king to read.
The officials hoped the king would obey the words of the scroll. The king had the scroll read aloud for him.
As each section was read, the king used a knife to cut off the section,
and then threw the section into a fire. Eventually the whole scroll was
burnt.
The king then issued an order for Jeremiah to be arrested. God protected Jeremiah and did not allow him to be arrested for the
time being.
God also told Jeremiah to have another scroll made.
Lord, please move world
leaders' hearts
to be open to your message of justice and peace and love

Psalm
144: Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress.
He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song,
you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the
Lord.
Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings
grown tall and strong from their youth;
our daughters graceful as columns,
adorned as though for a palace.
Let our crops and stock be blessed.
May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.
Lord, please help us love and
honor you every day.
Don't let us ever forget your love

James
5.1-6:
Are you rich and powerful? Then start weeping
for the miseries that are coming your way. Your wealth is rotting, your clothes are being
eaten by moths.
And your body also will soon be corroding in a burning fire. You cheated your workers. You lived a life of luxury without any care for people who were suffering.
You condemned and killed the innocent
Jesus, give uncaring rich and powerful people a

Mark
10.1-12: One day some religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him
"Is it against the Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?" Jesus replied "God created male and
female, for the two to become united as one body. What God has
united, no one should separate." The religious leaders then asked
"But why did Moses allow divorce?" Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce
because people were so hard of heart. But divorce was not God's
plan. So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their
partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery."
Jesus, please help married

Jeremiah 33-35: Most of the people and their leaders ignored God's message
delivered by Jeremiah. But one group listened to Jeremiah and obeyed God's message:
that group was the nomad clan of Rechabites. At God's command Jeremiah invited them to a meal near the
Temple
and invited them to drink wine. But they replied that they had been told by God
never to own property or build houses or be farmers or drink wine. Jeremiah then spoke to the people watching the
Rechabites:
"See how this clan is obedient to the message of the Lord,
unlike most of the people and its leaders who ignore God. Because this clan has been faithful and obedient,
therefore it will always be blessed by the Lord".
Lord, please help me be

you who do justice for the needy. I have no way out of

4.13-15: Avoid talking like this: "Tomorrow I'm

Lord's will, tomorrow I'm going to another town for a year".

Mark
9.38-41: Jesus' apostle John, said "Master,
we saw a man who is not one of our group casting out devils in your name.
Because he was not one of us, we tried to stop him". Jesus said "You must not stop him. No one
who works a miracle in my name is going to speak evil of me. Anyone who is
not against us
is for us. In fact, even someone who gives you a cup of
water to drink because you belong to me, will be rewarded"

From a reader in Australia:
Mildred, the church gossip and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several members did not approve of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Jerry, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old ute parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She emphatically told Jerry (and several others) that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing! Jerry, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing. Later that evening, Jerry quietly parked his ute in front of Mildred's house ... walked home ... and left it there all night.

Jeremiah 32: Jerusalem was about to be captured by the Chaldaeans.
But God promised that Jerusalem would recover its freedom. As a sign that Jerusalem would be free again,
God told Jeremiah to buy a field. People thought Jeremiah was crazy.

but soon people will again buy land and build homes
in freedom and safety.

Jeremiah 30-31: God told Jeremiah to tell the people these words:
"I will restore you to health.
I will heal your wounds.
I have loved you with an everlasting love.
Strong and constant is my love for you. I will bring back the exiles and save them.
I will change their sorrow into joy. The days are coming when I will make a new agreement with my people.

9.14-29:
A man brought his son to Jesus and pleaded: "Master, there is a spirit of dumbness in
my son. When it takes hold of him, it throws him to the ground, and he
foams at the mouth and goes rigid". They brought the boy. As soon as the spirit
saw Jesus, it threw the boy into convulsions. Jesus asked the father "How long has this
been happening?"
He replied "From childhood .... please help us!" Jesus said "Everything is possible if you
have faith".
The father cried out "Please increase my faith!" Jesus rebuked the evil spirit: "Deaf and
dumb spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again".
The spirit came out, but the boy seemed to
have died. Jesus took him by the hand and helped him up. Jesus' disciples asked "Why were we
unable to expel that spirit?"
Jesus replied "Only prayer can drive out that kind of spirit"
