Readings are from Simple Bible

Daniel 1: There were many Israelite exiles in Babylon. The king of Babylon wanted some of them to work in his palace. The king told his officials to select 4 young men and train them in local customs and culture. The 4 selected were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. God blessed these 4 with great wisdom. God also blessed Daniel with the gift of understanding dreams. When the 4 began work for the king, they were much wiser than all the local officials.
Lord, please give us the gift of wisdom, as you gave it to Daniel and his friends

My recording of this reading

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,
the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.

How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Listen

1 Peter 5.5-14: To everyone else I say: do what the elders tell you. Wrap yourselves in humility to be servants of each other.
God refuses the proud and favors the humble. Bow down before the power of God, and he will raise you up. Unload all your worries on to him, since he is looking after you. Be calm, but careful, because your enemy the Devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat. Stand up to him, strong in faith. Peace to all who are in Christ

Jesus, please protect me from Satan

Listen

Mark 14.1-11: Two days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death. During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper. At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time. The leaders promised to give Judas money. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest
Jesus,  forgive me for the times when I have not been faithful  to you and your teaching

Readings are from Simple Bible

Ezekiel 35-38: Through Ezekiel, God kept calling on the people to turn from their sins and remember their Creator. God said he would bring back Israel's exiles to their homeland. He would give them a new start in life, like a skeleton coming back to life. God said the people would re-build the Temple in Jerusalem, and religious practice would once again flourish. The people would once again remember God. The people would once again be blessed by the Lord.
Lord, please help nations which have forgotten you to come back to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid evil and to do good

Listen

1 Peter 5.1-4: To those of you who are elders I say: I am an elder myself, a witness to the sufferings of Christ. Be good shepherds of the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it, not simply as a duty, or for sordid money, but gladly, because that's what God wants you to do. Never be a dictator over any group that is in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow. When the Chief Shepherd appears, you will be given the crown of unfading glory
Jesus, help pastors and elders be good shepherds

Listen

John 1.35-51 (for Feast of Sts Philip & James, apostles): John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God.  Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth".
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

c.f. readings for Easter 5

Acts 9.20-31: After a few days, Paul began preaching in the prayer halls that Jesus is the Son of God. People were amazed at Paul's conversion. As time passed, the Jews planned to kill Paul. Paul heard of this and decided to leave the city. The Jews kept watch at the city gates to stop him leaving. Then one night he was able to escape: some disciples lowered him in a basket from the city wall. He went to Jerusalem and began preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. Soon another plot was made to kill him. Therefore the disciples sent him to Tarsus. After this the churches throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria were left in peace. They steadily grew, strengthened by the Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit, please strengthen me, as you strengthened Paul and the first believers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt  me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

 Listen

1 John 3.16-21: This has taught us love: that Jesus gave up his life for us. We too should give up our lives for others. If you see someone in need and refuse to help him, how can the love of God be in you? Our love must be put into practice, not be just words. Anyone who loves God must also love other people
Jesus, help me put my love into practice by helping people in need

 Listen

John 15.1-8: At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Each branch in me that bears no fruit, he cuts off. Each branch that does bear fruit, he prunes to make it bear even more fruit. As a branch cannot bear fruit by itself, but must remain part of the vine, so you can't  bear fruit unless you remain in me. Cut off from me, you can do nothing. If you remain in me, and my words are alive in your heart, you can ask for any good thing and you will get it. It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit"
Jesus, please help me stay close to you. Help me bear much fruit

Reflection on the above readings: "Fruit" (Gospel) means actions, not just words (I John)

c.f. readings for St Joseph the Worker (For International Labor Day)

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good.
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life,  that we may live our lives more wisely

Recording

Colossians 3.18 - 4.1: Wives and husbands, understand and support each other. Children, be obedient to your parents. Parents, treat your children fairly or else they will rebel. Slaves, be obedient and respectful to your owners. Offer up your work to the Lord, our Heavenly Owner. Owners, be just and fair to your slaves. Remember your Heavenly Owner.
Jesus,  help families to live together in harmony

 Recording

Matthew 13.53-58: One day Jesus went to Nazareth, his home town. In the prayer hall there he taught the local people. But the local people would not accept him.  They said "Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous power? He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary. His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude. His sisters are here, too.  He's nobody special." Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house". And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Jesus, please give me more faith in you .... and don't let me reject people

 Recording

Reflection on the above readings: On this International Workers/Labor Day, may the example of the carpenter whom Jesus called "father" help us to offer up our work as a prayer to the Lord ... like a woman who used to pray "Jesus, I don't really like washing and ironing, but I offer it up as a prayer asking that you would keep my family safe". Let us also pray for the tens of millions of workers who have lost their jobs because of Covid-19

Ezekiel 33-34: God told Ezekiel to say this to Israel's leaders: "Punishment is coming for you shepherds who have fed yourselves but not looked after the sheep. You have failed to make the weak sheep strong, or to care for the sick ones. You have failed to bring back stray sheep or look for lost sheep. On the contrary, you have been cruel to the sheep and treated them badly. Therefore I will look after my flock myself. I will rescue them from where they have been scattered. I will look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the injured, and make the weak strong. I will also judge the sheep themselves. I will judge the fat sheep which have bullied the weak sheep. I will raise up a special shepherd and put him in charge of all my sheep." Lord, please help all leaders care for their people, like Jesus the Good Shepherd
My recording of this reading

Psalm 6: Have mercy on me, Lord, I have no strength. My body is racked with pain. Please heal me, Lord. I am exhausted with my groaning. Every night  my pillow is covered  with tears. Lord, please hear my prayer.
Dear Lord, please help people who are in distress of mind or body

Listen

1 Peter 4.13-19: If you have a share in the sufferings of Christ, be glad, because this means you will have an extra share of happiness in the life to come. It is a blessing for you when they insult you for being a Christian. It means you have the Spirit of God resting on you. People who experience suffering for God's sake, must trust themselves to the grace of the Creator, and keep on doing good
Jesus, give strength to persecuted Christians

Listen

Mark 13.1-37: Jesus spoke to his disciples about the future: "On account of my name you will be hated, tortured and killed.
But the Good News of the kingdom will spread to every nation before the end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun and moon will stop shining. Stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory. He will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you  should live a good life and you will have nothing to fear on your last day"

Jesus, please help me live and grow and die in your love ...and not be afraid of death

1 Peter 4.3-5: You spent enough time in the past living a careless life, behaving indecently, drinking all the time, having wild parties. Now that you don't do these things anymore, people can't understand why you've changed, and they tell lies about you. They will have to answer for this to him who will judge everyone at the end of their lives.

Mark 12.41-44: Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor. Many rich people put in a lot of money. A poor widow put in two small coins. Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people

Wed April 28

After the monthly O.M.I. overnight retreat at Sheung Shui ended at midday yesterday, I went to nearby Lo Wu women's prison for a few hours .... where one young women asked me "My situation is terrible. Where is God?" To which I replied that Jesus said "When you visit a prisoner, you visit Me" .... which means that in visiting her I was visiting Jesus ... which means Jesus was pretty close! That particular woman's charge is a mistake (to put it politely), she has not committed a crime, but as I quoted Jesus' words to her, I reflected that Jesus did not say "When you visit an innocent prisoner ... or small offender" but "prisoner" which includes all prisoners, which includes big offenders .... which is a staggering thought. Jesus identifies with people on the wrong side of the law, as he did 2,000 years ago when he hung around with prostitutes and outcasts.

Ezekiel 12-18: Ezekiel spoke God's message for the false prophets: "You have misled my people. You have not bothered to protect my people". Ezekiel also called on the people to stop their idolatry. He reminded them how to follow the Lord: a good person is law-abiding and honest; a good person oppresses no one, never steals; a good person gives food and clothing to the poor. "God takes no delight in the death of a sinner. God hopes the sinner will renounce wickedness and live."
Lord, please help me to avoid evil ..... and do more good

My recording of this reading

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace
Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

Listen

1 Peter 3.8-11: Be agreeable and sympathetic. Love everyone. Have compassion and be self-effacing. Never pay back one wrong with another, or an angry word with another one. Instead, pay back with a blessing. Anyone who wants to have a happy life must banish malice from his tongue; they must avoid evil, do good and seek peace
Jesus, when people are  unkind to me, help me to pray in my heart "Lord, please bless them"

Listen

Mark 12.38-40:
Jesus told the people to beware of religious leaders who like to walk about in long robes, who like to be greeted obsequiously in the market places, who like to take the places of honor at prayer halls and banquets, who steal the property of widows, while making a show of lengthy prayers
Jesus, help religious leaders to be good people

A few days ago a welfare officer from Lo Wu women's prison gave me a request from an inmate soon to be discharged and return to her own country: she needed some clothes and shoes. So, before going to the prison after midday Monday, with the help of staff,  I obtained some shoes and clothes from MercyHK's second hand shop in Temple Street ... and carried the said items in a special bag since my travel bag was full (computer, books for prisoners etc). I was grateful that no one asked me why I was carrying a bag of women's clothes!
