Readings are from Simple Bible

Daniel 14: In Babylon there was a temple with an idol named Bel to which lots of food and drink were offered each day. 70 priests and their families  used to eat the food each night, having entered the temple by a secret door. The king believed Bel ate the food. Daniel told him that an idol cannot eat anything. The 70 priests called for Daniel to be executed if he could not prove the idol was not eating the food. Daniel got his servants to spread ashes over the temple floor. Next morning he showed the king the footprints in the ashes. The king had the 70 priests and their families executed. The king had Bel destroyed.
Lord, please help people turn away from lifeless idols and serve you, the Creator of the world

My recording of this reading

Psalms 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord.
Lord, may our plans and hopes be acceptable to you. Please bless our plans

Listen

1 John 2.3-6: We can be sure we know God only by keeping his commandments. Anyone who says "I know him" and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, refusing to admit the truth. We can be sure we are in God only if we are living the same kind of life as Christ lived
Jesus, please help me live like you, live for you

Listen

Mark 15.1-15: Early in the morning, the religious leaders had Jesus bound with ropes. They took him to Pilate, the Roman governor. The leaders accused Jesus of many crimes. To the governor's amazement, Jesus remained silent. The leaders persuaded the crowd to demand the execution of Jesus. They called out to Pilate "Crucify him". Pilate asked "Why? What has he done wrong?" The crowd shouted all the louder "Crucify him. Crucify him". Giving in to the crowd, Pilate then ordered Jesus to be scourged and crucified
Jesus, help people who are condemned to death

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: At first Jesus remained silent before Pilate, but John's gospel shows that Jesus eventually replied to Pilate. Bottom line: when we are wrongly accused of something, there's a time to remain silent and a time to speak up

Readings are from Simple Bible

Daniel 13: A beautiful woman named Susanna was condemned to death on a false charge of immorality. God stirred Daniel's heart to help Susanna. Daniel confronted Susanna's two accusers, two elderly Jewish men. Daniel had the two men separated. He then asked them individually where the alleged crime took place. One of them said "under a mastic tree." The other said "under an oak tree." The people then realized the men were lying. The people praised God for giving such wisdom to Daniel. Susanna was freed. The two men were executed, as required by the Law.
Lord, please help people who have been falsely accused of crimes

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19:
The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Listen

1 John 1.5-9: God is light. There is no darkness in him. If we say we are in union with God while we are living in darkness,
we are lying, because we are not living the truth. If we say we have no sin in us, we are deceiving ourselves and refusing to admit the truth. But if we acknowledge our sins, God will forgive us and purify us from everything that is wrong

Jesus, forgive my sins. Please help me avoid sin

Listen

Mark 14.66-72: Peter went to the place where the religious leaders had Jesus on trial. A young woman in the courtyard of the place  said to him "You were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth". Peter replied "I don't know what you're talking about". Peter went to the gateway of the place, where the woman saw him again and said to people around her "This man is one of them". Peter denied it. Not long after this a group of people said to Peter "You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent". Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster crowed. Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". Peter then wept loudly.
Jesus, please help me not to deny you. Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: It is said that Peter, to make up for having denied Jesus three times, asked to be crucified upside down

c.f. readings for Easter 6

Acts 10.1-48: Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in the town of Caesarea. He and his household prayed, loved God, and helped the local people. One morning Cornelius had a vision that Peter would visit him. In another town, Peter was instructed by the Lord to visit Cornelius. Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and his household. While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers  who had accompanied Peter were astonished
that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people

Holy Spirit, please come down on all peoples everywhere!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

 Listen

1 John 4.7-16: Let us love one another. Love comes from God. God is love. God showed his love for us by sending his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Since God has loved us so much we should love one another. God is love. Anyone who lives in love, lives in God, and God lives in him
Jesus, you are love itself. May I live in your love

 Listen

John 15.9-13: At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love by keeping my commandments, especially this commandment: love one another, as I have loved you. You can have no greater love than to lay down you life for your friends".
Jesus, thank you for loving us. Help us to love one another as you have loved us

Sat May 8

Yesterday morning after a visit to the Catholic Centre chapel in Central to ask for help, I went with Eddie Chan (a fellow director of MercyHK) to Cheung Chau Island to inspect and then sign a contract, on behalf of MercyHK, for a new centre - a centre for women - at a most beautiful location near the Cheung Chau beach. Fervent prayers were made when negotiations met with some obstacles at one stage ... and our prayers were answered, to enable the signing to go ahead. Centre will mainly be for ex-prisoners and people out on bail. On returning to Central I paid another visit to the chapel ... this time to say THANK YOU JESUS!

MercyHK's volunteer accountant is doing a wonderful job keeping a record of our work for the poor in Jordan/Yau Ma Tei. Now we need a second accountant - for our work at the two centres on Cheung Chau. Work will involve processing daily expense sheets from both centres. If you'd like to help, please contact me: jdwomi@gmail.com   (To my shame I can't find the contact info of two kind people who previously offered to help with accounting. Maybe they might see this!)

Daniel 8-12: Daniel received many visions from God, usually after a special time of prayer and fasting. Daniel was given glimpses of the future, the rise and fall of nations. He also was given to understand what happens after this life: "The dead will rise from the grave, some to everlasting life, some to everlasting shame. Those who have instructed others in virtue, will shine like stars for all eternity."
Lord, please help everyone get to Heaven

My recording of this reading

Psalm 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of all praise

Listen

1 John 1.1-2: Something which has existed since the beginning, that we heard, that we saw with our own eyes, that we touched with our hands: the Word, who is life - this is our subject. That life was made visible. We saw it, and we are giving our testimony, telling you of the eternal life which was with the Father and has been made visible to us
Jesus, Word-made-flesh, you are the Way, the Truth and the Life

Listen

"In the beginning was the Word"

Mark 14.53-65: The men who arrested Jesus took him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn Jesus to death, even if they had to use false evidence. Jesus remained silent before their accusations. Then the main leader challenged Jesus: "Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?" Jesus replied "I am". The leader then called out "We have heard him claim to be of Divine origin. This is blasphemy". The rest of the leaders shouted "He should die". Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists
Jesus, thank you for submitting yourself to insult and spittle for the salvation of the world

Fri May 7

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the third day in a row ... this time for an application (successful) to change bail conditions ... God bless the kind judge. After which I spent time (no pun intended) with 3 people out on bail helping them with a number of jobs. In the afternoon I joined social work assistant Simon and his assistant Sr Louise and new volunteer Ranita for the weekly gathering at the Alhambra Building for formerly homeless people now accommodated in the building.

Daniel 7: Once when Daniel was asleep, he had a vision of heaven: "Thrones were put in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, his hair as pure as wool. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. Then coming on the clouds of heaven was one like a son of man. On him was conferred  glory and kingship, and people of all nations became his servants. His kingship is eternal. His empire will never be destroyed."
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man" whose kingship is eternal

My recording of this reading

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day ....and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven.
Listen

2 Peter 1.20 - 3.18: We must be careful to understand Scripture according to God's mind. We are not free to make up our own interpretations as we like. In the past there were false prophets. So there will always be false prophets and teachers who twist the truth to suit their own tastes and corrupt behavior. They will have much to answer for when the Day of the Lord comes. Our brother Paul has written to you about this issue. Sometimes his writing is not easy to understand, and is distorted by false teachers. Avoid false teaching. Stand firm in the truth. Go on growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
To him be glory, in time and in eternity. Amen

Jesus,  protect me from people who distort the Bible message

Listen

Mark 14.43-52: While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived. Judas had with him a large crowd of men with swords and clubs,
sent by the religious leaders. Judas had told these men "The one I kiss is the man. Take him". So Judas went  to Jesus and said  "Teacher" and kissed him. The men  then seized Jesus. Jesus said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs?  Day after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All the apostles then deserted him and ran away

Jesus, when I am being treated unfairly by other people, please give me strength

Thu May 6

A long but happy day yesterday: after a couple of hours office work I attended a late morning case at the High Court where a kind judge granted bail to an overseas prisoner facing a drug trafficking trial ... already in remand several years. After leaving the court I went to the holding area to collect the prisoner's passport (from person to person), then to the accounts office to hand in the passport and to pay bail and surety, then after a High Court lunch time break, back to the judge's court to show the accounts office receipts, then to another floor for formal processing and signing of the surety agreement. Then to the nearby Chinese University office to enrol some prisoners for courses.

Then back to Jordan where an African asylum seeker was asking urgent help with his  accommodation bills ... which meant a visit to his rented flat and then a visit to his estate agent's office ....during which time many phone messages were exchanged between myself, a kind barrister, the kind court clerk, staff at the holding area and a kind volunteer who was waiting at the High Court holding entrance to receive the bailed prisoner and take him to MercyHK's 2nd hand shop in Jordan for clothes/shoes/phone etc .... phone calls concerning the fact that the Immigration Dept had strangely decreed the prisoner was going to Tuen Mun Immigration Centre (the notorious CIC) for processing and would not be released at the High Court.

Then eventually after a couple of hours the prisoner called from CIC to touch base, and a very unpleasant male officer demanded minute and unnecessary details about the prisoner's bail accommodation (which even the Court had not required) ...saying the prisoner would be released later in the evening ... no time given ...just thrown out on the street with no help (not uncommon at CIC). Fortunately I was able to tell the prisoner to get a taxi (he had a little money) and ask the driver to phone me for directions. Unpleasant officer hung up on me when I tried to point out it was cruel to throw people who have never lived in HK out on the street without help and said "no wonder people criticise CIC". Finally the prisoner reached Temple Street where he was able to get items from MercyHK's shop just before closing time. Then the volunteers (two of them) took him to the accommodation place. (and see below)

Daniel 4-6Some of the king's officials were jealous of Daniel, so they had him arrested on a false charge and condemned to death. One evening, Daniel was put into a cave of lions. The mouth of the cave was sealed with a great stone. In the cave Daniel prayed to God for help, and God protected Daniel. The next morning the stone was removed. Daniel walked out unharmed. The king then ordered Daniel's accusers to be put into the cave. The lions immediately ate them.
Thank you, Lord, for protecting Daniel. Thank you, Lord, for so often protecting me

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

Recording

2 Peter 1.12-18: As long as I am in this passing world, my duty is to keep on reminding you of the truths we hold dear. Writing this letter is one way of making sure that after my departure you will still have a way of recalling the truths we hold dear. These truths are not cleverly invented myths. I myself saw the majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was honored and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory himself spoke to him and said "This is my Son, the Beloved. He enjoys my favor". I heard this myself, spoken from heaven, when I was with Jesus on the holy mountain
Jesus, Beloved Son, may more and more people accept the truth of your Good News

Listen

Mark 14.26-42: After the meal, Jesus said to his apostles "Tonight all of you will desert me". Peter said "I will never desert you". Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". They came to a place with olive trees called Gethsemane. Jesus asked Peter, James and John to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness and fear. He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is dying. Please support me as I pray". Then he fell on his face and prayed for about an hour: "Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be done". He stood up and found that the apostles were asleep. He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support me?" Three times he prayed the same way. Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get ready. The one who is betraying me is coming".
Jesus, please help me give more time to prayer

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Jesus (God the Son) was asking human prayer support!

In addition to the two main dramas of yesterday - the bail case and the asylum seeker - a third item at several parts of the day was much communication with a friend locating a new centre for MercyHK, a centre for women .... in time for the new centre's address information to be given to a court hearing this morning! No trouble sleeping last night!

Daniel 2-3: The king of Babylon had a dream which none of his wise men could interpret. God enabled Daniel to understand the dream. The king then promoted Daniel and his friends to important jobs. Some time after this, the king built a golden statue
and everyone was commanded to adore it. The Jewish exiles, including Daniel and his friends, refused to adore the statue. Daniel and his friends were condemned to be burnt to death in a big furnace. But God protected the four young men and they walked around unhurt in the flames. They praised God for his wonderful protection and called on all creatures to adore the one true God. When the king saw this miracle take place he cancelled the law for Jews to be killed.

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. Let everyone praise the Lord for his love is everlasting

My recording of this reading

Psalms 9-13: I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart. You have so often rescued me from trouble. Thank you! You are the best helper for people in trouble. Please keep on helping me when troubles come. Please stop bad people from hurting others.
Please let peoples in all countries know they must avoid evil and live a life of justice.

Dear Lord, thank you for so often rescuing me

Listen

2 Peter 1.1-11: From Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to all who have faith through our God and Saviour Jesus Christ. May you have more and more grace and peace as you come to know our Lord more and more. By his divine power, he has given us all we need for life and faith. He has called us to share his divine nature in his eternal kingdom. So we must do our best to live lives of goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, a love for prayer, kindness and love
Dear Jesus, may I see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day

Listen

Mark 14.17-25: On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles. While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer. Then Jesus took some bread, blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying " This is my body". Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying "This is my blood"
