Yesterday morning I went to nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital to
help 2 African prisoners apply for medical reports .... before they soon leave
HK after finishing their long sentences.
Office work took up most of the rest of the day ... one job being to transfer a
small donation to the Sikh Temple in HK for their India Covid appeal (following
the good example of my local district councillor Frank Ho who promoted the
appeal through W/App)

To
prepare for Pentecost (May
23) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this week:
The seal is
a symbol close to that of anointing. "The Father has set his seal"
on Christ and also seals us
in him. Because this seal indicates
the indelible effect of the anointing with the Holy Spirit in the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, the image of the seal (sphragis)
has been used in some theological traditions to express the indelible
"character" imprinted by these three unrepeatable sacraments. CCC
698

In this week before Pentecost let's often pray each day: Come
Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Amos
1-9: It was God who formed the mountains
and created the wind.
The Lord is his name. He says to the House of Israel: Seek me and you shall live.
Do not go to the places of idol worship. Seek good and not evil, so that you may live.
Hate evil and love good. Injustice and swindling, exploitation of the
poor,
this is the reason for earthquakes and disaster.
Lord,
please help me to do good and avoid evil
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses
us with peace.
Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me.
I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing.
So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the
times you have healed me

John 4.20 - 5.13:
Anyone who says "I love God"
but hates his brother, is a liar. A man who does not love the brother he can see
cannot love God whom he has never seen. Who can overcome the world?
Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. God has given us eternal life,
and this life is in his Son. You who believe in the Son of God
have eternal life. Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God

Mark
16.9-20:
After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared
first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next
he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said
to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all
creation.
Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved.
Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned.
These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils,
they will have the gift of tongues, they will pick up snakes in their hands, they will be unharmed if they drink poison,
they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed".
And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to
them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere,
the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that
accompanied the message
Lord Jesus, may more and more
people all over the world believe in you

To
prepare for Pentecost (May 23), let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this
week:
Cloud and light. These
two images occur together in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. In the
theophanies of the Old Testament, the cloud,
now obscure, now luminous, reveals the living and saving God, while veiling the
transcendence of his glory - with Moses on Mount Sinai, at the tent of meeting,
and during the wandering in the desert, and with Solomon at the dedication of
the Temple. In the Holy Spirit, Christ fulfills these figures. The Spirit comes
upon the Virgin Mary and "overshadows"
her, so that she might conceive and give birth to Jesus. On the mountain of
Transfiguration, the Spirit in the "cloud came
and overshadowed" Jesus, Moses and Elijah, Peter, James and John, and
"a voice came out of the
cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!' Finally, the
cloud took Jesus out of the sight of the disciples. (CCC
697)

Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

1-4: My country has been invaded.
Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth and lament.
Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again,
for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help.
"Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies:
"I will save and rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all

Every one will prophesy and see visions. You will learn that I am the Lord your God.
Jerusalem will be a holy place."

Mark
16.1-8: Jesus died on Friday afternoon.
Early on Sunday morning, Mary of
Magdala and two other women went to
Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices.
They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone,
but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. When they went into the tomb, they saw a young
man in a white robe and they were full of awe. But he said to them
"Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is
not here. He has risen from the
dead. Go and tell his disciples he
will see them in Galilee"
Jesus,

The
Ascension of Jesus

It was good to be on the annual O.M.I. retreat last week, but as usual, a post-retreat present awaited me at home: a pile of mail and many other jobs to catch up on. I presume that in Heaven (which we think about today on the Feast of the Ascension) there will not be any post offices?
The present Jerusalem crisis had a definite cause: Muslims were stopped
from using a traditional place for gathering at the end of Eid. Who made the "stop"
decision? Surely he/she/they realised the consequences. The situation has
benefited only one person - the Israeli prime minister who was about to lose his
job. Did he make the "stop" decision to help him keep his job? (Notice
by the way, that so often when crisis situations occur these days, the cause of
the crisis gets forgotten or obscured as time goes on)

Acts
1.6-11: On
the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles "You will
receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses
in every part of the world". As he said this, he
was lifted up while they watched. A cloud took him from their sight. Then
two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you,
will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave".
Jesus,
help me be your witness by the way I think and speak and live

Psalms
47-48: All
peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord,
our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially
in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount
Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts
meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love
you as Creator of the Universe
Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let
all the peoples praise you

Ephesians
1.16-18: I
never fail to remember you in my prayers and to thank God for you. May the God
of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you more and more wisdom and
knowledge to see ever more clearly his great love for you. May he enlighten your
mind to hope
for the glorious life he has prepared for us in heaven.

Hosea
7-14: God's message through Hosea: Israel has forgotten its Maker.
The people worship idols made by human hands. It is time to seek the
Lord.
It is time to sow integrity and reap kindness. Israel,
come back to the Lord your God.
Have no more to do with idols made by human hands.

Psalm
27: The Lord is my light and my

The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though
an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this
I long:
to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not
your face.
I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart.

3.16-21: This has taught us love: that
Jesus gave up his life for us. We too should give up our lives for others. If
you see someone in need and refuse to help him, how can the love of God be in
you? Our love must be put into practice,
not be just words.
Anyone who loves God must also love other people
Jesus, help me put my love into practice by helping people in need

Mark
15.42-47: Joseph from Arimathaea was a rich
man who had become a disciple of Jesus. After Jesus died on Friday, he
asked Governor Pilate for Jesus' body. Joseph wrapped the body in a clean
burial cloth and put it in a tomb in a rock cave. He then put a large
stone at the cave's entrance. Mary of Magdala and another woman watched Joseph as he put Jesus' body in the tomb

Hosea 5-6: God's message through Hosea:
What am I to do with you, Ephraim?
What am I to do with you, Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud,

What I want is knowledge of God, not burnt offerings in the Temple.

During these days, Peter spoke to a group of about 120 disciples:
"As you know, Judas hanged himself after betraying Jesus. We must now
choose someone to take Judas' place, someone who has been with us since
the time when John was baptizing". Two men were nominated, Joseph and
Matthias.
After prayer was offered, Matthias was chosen. He was listed as one of the

Mark
15.33-39: Jesus was put on the cross sometime after 9am.
From about noon until 3pm there was darkness over all the land. About 3pm Jesus cried out the
words of Psalm 22
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" A little while later he again
cried out in a loud voice.
Then he died. At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in
two from top to bottom. The leader of the Roman soldiers
who crucified Jesus, when he saw how Jesus died, said "Truly this man
was a son of God"
Jesus, thank you for dying on
the cross for the salvation of the world

You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me

Hello on Day 3 of the annual O.M.I. retreat at St Paul's House of Prayer in Sheung Shui. Since yesterday was the death anniversary (411 years ago) of Matteo Ricci, I spent one part of the day going through this file .... admiring Ricci's love for China ... and his perseverance! I once spent 7 years working in China (2001-2008) as an English teacher in Zhaoqing (thousands of photos here). I will continue, through my prison ministry, through MercyHK's 2nd hand shop and through the new Dr Jesus Centre, to serve Mainland people in HK.

Hosea 1-3:
God said to Hosea "Marry a prostitute
and have children by her,
for my people have abandoned me and become unfaithful". The Lord's people are like his wife,
but they have abandoned him. Hosea's wife was unfaithful to him and left
him.
But the Lord told Hosea to take her back. This was to show how God welcomes people back,
even though they have been unfaithful to him.

Psalm
22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the
Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer
connected.
My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet.
They await my death. They divide my clothing among them,
they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that you are good and
holy.
I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb
and entrusted me to my mother's breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now.
I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator.
May all the nations know and worship you.

are in big trouble right now,

15.16-20:
After the Roman soldiers scourged Jesus, they made fun of him.
They put a purple cloak on him. They made a crown out of thorns and put it
on his head. They knelt in front of him
and mocked him saying "Hail, king of the Jews". They hit
his head with a reed, and spat on him.
When they had finished making fun of him,
they dressed him in his own clothes and led him away to crucify him
Jesus, please don't let me hurt
other people by making fun of them

Reflection on the above readings: As he suffered (Gospel) Jesus prayed Psalm 22 (above). A favourite prayer of many people in prison ... when they feel abandoned by everyone
