Tues June 1

A happy day yesterday ... 23 of us went on a tour to The Peak, Stanley Market (& nearby St Anne's Church) and Repulse Bay. The 23 was made up of homeless people ... and workers at MercyHK's second hand shop in Jordan. Weather forecast was for rain and even storms .... and there was rain, but only while we were seated for lunch at an indoor restaurant! Even the fog on The Peak cleared enough for us to have a great view of HK island and Kowloon. Thank you Jesus for a lovely day! And see below!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 9-11: Noah's descendants spread to many lands. They started speaking new languages. They discovered how to make bricks. In one place, Babel,  they tried to build a very high tower. But God was not pleased with them. God scattered the people of Babel to many places.
Dear God, the human family uses so many different languages. Please help us to live peacefully together on this earth

My recording of this reading

Psalm 46:
God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Listen

Revelation 3.1-3: He gave me this message for the church in Sardis: "I know all about you. You are a shining red apple on the outside, but inside you are rotten. Wake up, revive your faith and love. Remember the eagerness you showed when you first heard the Good News. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, don't ever let me become a rotten apple

Listen

Luke 2.1-8: The Emperor of Rome ordered that a census be taken of the whole Empire. Every man had to go to his home town to be registered. So Joseph set out from Nazareth in Galilee and traveled to Judea, to the town of David called Bethlehem, with his pregnant wife Mary. While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have her child. She gave birth to a son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a feeding box for animals, because there was no room for them at the local inn
Baby Jesus, born in Bethlehem, please bless all babies born in the world today
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: God knew in advance what the Roman Emperor would decree ... and arranged for one of the prophets to announce that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem

While our group of 23 was walking yesterday from lunch restaurant towards Stanley Market, a kind couple from Yau Ma Tei parish who happened to be at Stanley spontaneously gave us a donation ... which was used to buy everyone a beautiful ice cream on the beach at Repulse Bay! God bless that kind couple!

Mon May 31

Another busy day at the Dr Jesus Centre yesterday: four groups there for several meetings, mostly concerned with visiting/helping prisoners. After discussions in the meeting area, each group also spent time (no pun intended) in the prayer room ... with many kind compliments about nice the room and indeed the whole centre is (... thanks to interior design experts Camay and Yuki!)

Today I'm due to take part in an excursion for homeless people and MercyHK shop helpers .... to the Peak, Stanley Market (including St Anne's Church) and Repulse Bay. God bless the kind organisers ... and please give us a safe trip.

c.f. readings for Feast of Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth

Zephaniah 3.14-18: Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem! The Lord has repealed your sentence; he has driven your enemies away. The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst; you have no more evil to fear. When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem: Zion, have no fear, do not let your hands fall limp. The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult with joy over you, he will renew you by his love; he will dance with shouts of joy for you as on a day of festival.
My recording of this reading

Isaiah 12: Truly, God is my salvation, I trust, I shall not fear. For the Lord is my strength, my song, he became my saviour. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Give thanks to the Lord, give praise to his name! Make his mighty deeds known to the peoples! Declare the greatness of his name. Sing a psalm to the Lord for he has done glorious deeds; make them known to all the earth! People of Zion, sing and shout for joy, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel
Recording

Romans 12.9-13: Do not let your love be superficial, but sincerely prefer good to evil. Have a family love for each other, and a profound respect for each other. Persevere in your love for the Lord and your service of the Lord. Hope will make you cheerful. Do not give up when trials come. Keep on praying. Help people who are in need. Make hospitality your special care
Jesus, please help me grow in love. Help me love you and other people a bit better
Recording

Luke 1.39-45: As soon as she could and as quickly as she could, Mary went to Elizabeth's home in the hills near Jerusalem. As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby in Elizabeth's womb jumped, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth said to Mary "Of all women, you are the most blessed, and blessed is the baby in your womb. Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?  Blessed are you for believing God's promise"
Mary, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus

c.f. readings for Trinity Sunday

Deuteronomy 2-4: Moses continued his talk to the Israelites: "God has been with us these 40 years, watching over us and providing for us. God gave us many victories and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies. So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws. Do not forget the things your eyes have seen. Make sure to tell these things to your children's children. God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people. If you seek God with all your heart and soul you will find him. Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below, he and no other. Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children may prosper and live long in the land that the Lord your God gives you forever."
Lord, please help me to seek you with all my heart
My recording of this reading

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

 Listen

Romans 8.14-21: Everyone moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's language to speak to God  tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since we are God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his suffering so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be compared with the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation looks forward to sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality.
Abba, Father, may everyone love and honor you. Help everyone get to heaven

 Listen

Matthew 28.16-20: The 11 apostles went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before him in worship. Jesus said to them "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to understand and live according to my words. And know that I am with you always, yes, to the end of time".
Jesus, "God-with-us", please help us live our lives according to your teaching ....and thank you, Matthew, for this beautiful Gospel Report

Another full and happy day yesterday: some shopping in the morning, a pizza (!) lunch at the Dr Jesus Centre with four young mothers (... let the reader understand), Fr Franco Mella and Simon (my social work assistant); then the usual 3pm gathering at Dr Jesus for homeless people; then a trip to the Open University of HK to collect the graduation certificate of an African prisoner who has most diligently completed a full degree course while in detention.

Genesis 5-6: Among Adam and Eve's descendants were Seth, Enosh, Kenan and Enoch. Enoch was a special friend of God.
Enoch walked with God. Another good man who walked with God was Noah. In Noah's time, most people had forgotten God.
Most people did bad things. So God decided to cleanse the earth by a great flood. To save Noah and his family from the flood,
God got Noah to build a huge boat for his family and for two animals of every kind. Even though most people forgot God,
Noah believed in God and trusted God.

Dear God, please help me to remember you, to walk with you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

Listen

Revelation 2.18-22: He gave me this message for the church in Thyatira: "I know how charitable you are. I see your faith and devotion, and your courage in suffering. But some of you are being misled by a false teacher. You are imitating her bad behavior. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, please don't let me imitate bad behavior

Listen

Luke 1.67-80: When John was named, his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and said "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. He has visited his people. And you, little child, you shall be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him". When John grew older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his ministry
Jesus, please help me prepare your way by helping people to know you

Reflection on the above readings: Our troubled world urgently needs the teaching and example and grace of Jesus. Can we do a bit more to prepare a way for him?

Genesis 4: Two of Adam and Eve's sons were Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer. Abel was a shepherd. Cain was jealous of his brother Abel. God said to Cain: "Get control of yourself." But Cain let his anger take over, and he killed Abel. God asked Cain, "Where is Abel?" Cain answered, "How should I know? I'm not his security guard." God replied, "I can hear your brother's blood crying out to me from the ground. That same ground will no longer give you any crops."
Dear God, please help me not to get angry with other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 41: Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak. He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble. The Lord will help him on his bed of pain. The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health
Lord, please help me to do more for the poor

Listen

Revelation 2.12-16: He gave me this message for the church in Pergamum: "I know you live in a place where idol worship is strong. I know you have stayed faithful, even after one of you was killed. But some of you have compromised yourselves by eating food sacrificed to idols. And some of you have followed false teachers. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, don't let me ever compromise my faith

Listen

Luke 1.46-56: Mary said "My soul praises the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior. Starting from today, all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me". Mary stayed with Elizabeth about 3 months and then went home. Elizabeth gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives shared her joy. When the child was circumcised on the 8th day, he was given the name John.
Jesus, please bless all women who are having a baby today

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Many times in the Bible, starting with today's reading from Genesis, a link is made between human behaviour and external circumstances like weather etc. Some people might call this superstition, but because  our world is afflicted by climate change and Covid, it's worth thinking about

Genesis 3A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you."
God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came  and to dust you will return." The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").

Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Revelation 2.8-10: He gave me this message for the church in Smyrna: "I know the trials you have been through, and how poor you are, and the slanderous attacks that have been made on you. Do not be afraid of suffering, afraid of prison. Even if you have to die, keep faithful, and I will give you the prize of eternal life"
Jesus, help me stay faithful when I experience trials and suffering

When I felt a bit tired after my second jab of BioNTech on Monday morning, I was wondering if I'd be ok to visit Tai Lam women's prison the next day. But an afternoon rest on Monday soon restored the system and I was able yesterday to visit not only Tai Lam women's prison but also the nearby Siu Lam psychiatric prison for men and women.... thanking God for all the sport I was privileged to take part in when at school to build up my stamina. As usual I came away from both prisons with many jobs to do .... and many people to pray for.

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars .... the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people ..... the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Luke 1.26-38: In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her

Providence was at work in my life yesterday. Just as I reached the main entrance of Tai Lam around 2.05pm after visiting Tai Lam ... and was preparing to wait for the 2.30 mini-bus to take me to Siu Lam, a taxi pulled up and I was able to go immediately to Siu Lam. Then just when I left Siu Lam around 4.30 a mini-bus pulled up to take me to Tuen Mun for the train ride back to Jordan. Perfect timing can be spelt "Coincidence" but I prefer to spell it as "PROVIDENCE"
