Tues June 8

Happy 1st Birthday today for MercyHK's second hand shop which opened one year ago at 191 Temple Street, Jordan ... to help raise money to rent accommodation for homeless people, to provide jobs for needy people, to save the environment, and to be a social centre where people can find material and advisory help. Total sales for the year = HK$671,157 (that's an average of $1,900 per day ... for one of the worst economic years in HK's history!)  God bless all the kind volunteers, item donors, workers, customers and supporters of the past year! (Today... special Birthday Sale ....30% off all items!)

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the drug trafficking case of a local man ... who was lucky to have a really kind judge and an excellent legal team (and see   below!). My time in the afternoon was spent at home at the desk, on several jobs for prisoners.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 18: One day at Mamre, God and two angels appeared to Abraham. At first, God and the angels looked like men.
Following the ancient custom of hospitality Abraham prepared a feast for them. God told Abraham that the town of Sodom was going to be destroyed because of the evil done there. Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy Sodom. God agreed to postpone Sodom's destruction for a while.

Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

My recording of this reading

Psalms 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God.
Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.

May all the peoples of the earth know you and praise you, O God

Listen

Revelation 5.11-14: I heard the sound of an immense number of angels gathered around God's throne. There were 10,000 times 10,000 of them, shouting: "The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy to be given power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessing". I heard all living things in creation - angels, people, animals - crying out: "To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb, be all praise, honor, glory and power for ever and ever"
"Thou are worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou are worthy O Lord, to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power"

Listen

Luke 3.10-14: People asked John the Baptist how they should reform their lives. He replied: "If anyone has extra clothing, share with people who have none. If anyone has plenty to eat, share with people who have nothing". Tax collectors asked John what they should do. He replied "Don't cheat anyone". Soldiers asked him "What about us? What must we do?" He replied "No bullying. No extortion. Be content with your pay"
Jesus, what about me? What should I do?
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: What a different place our world would be if we put John the Baptist's words into practice!

At start of case at High Court yesterday morning, Judge, with good humor, said to Defendant's barrister: "Your shirt is in some disarray" ... after which barrister fixed his untidy shirt. But there was nothing untidy about the barrister's razor-sharp mental awareness .... and at times he had to help the judge fix his array thinking!

Genesis 17: God appeared to Abraham and said to him "I will make an everlasting covenant with you and your descendants.
As a sign of this covenant, all your males must be circumcised. Baby boys must be circumcised when they are eight days old.
Also, Sarah your wife, even though she is old, will bear you a son. You will name him Isaac."
Dear God,  please bless all the babies in the world

My recording of this reading

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Listen

Revelation 7.9-17: I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, and language. They were standing in front of the throne, with palms in their hands. They shouted: "Victory to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb". One of the elders told me who these people are: "These are the people who have been through the great persecution.
They now serve God day and night in his sanctuary. The Lamb is their Shepherd. He leads them to springs of living water. God has wiped away all tears from their eyes".

Jesus, please help sorrowing people who are crying today

Listen

Luke 3.1-6: In the 15th year of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod was ruler of Galilee and during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, God's message entered the heart of John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. John went through the whole Jordan River area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. This had been foretold by the prophet Isaiah when he said "A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord"
Jesus, help us prepare your way, like John

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Luke, a doctor, and a skilful writer, gives precise details and dates. His Gospel has "the ring of truth" about it.

c.f. readings for Corpus Christi

Exodus 12: God said to Moses and Aaron "From now on, this month is to be the first month of your year. On the evening of the 14th day of this month each family must kill and eat a one year old male sheep or goat. Some of its blood must be put on your front door. You must eat it in a hurry, with a belt round your waist, sandals on your feet and a staff in your hand. This night I will go through the  land  of  Egypt  and strike every first-born Egyptian. But when I see the blood on your doors I shall PASS OVER your homes and you shall be unharmed.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

 Listen

Hebrews 8.9 - 9.14: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel". Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions, to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious
blood, purify my heart and protect me

 Listen

Mark 14.17-25: On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles. While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer. Then Jesus took some bread, blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying "This is my body". Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying "This is my blood"
Jesus, please help me understand how bread and wine become your body and
blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

Genesis 16: Abraham and his wife Sarah had been married many years but they did not have any children. So Sarah said to Abraham, "Take my slave Hagar and have children by her." When Hagar bore a son, Sarah was jealous and treated Hagar badly. Hagar ran away from home, but God said to her "Go back to your mistress and submit to her; I will bless all your descendants."
Dear God, please help childless couples to have a baby

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love
O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Listen

Revelation 5.1-10: I saw a sealed scroll that no one could open. Then I saw a Lamb, which seemed to have been sacrificed. The Lamb took the scroll, and the 24 elders sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals because you were sacrificed, and by your blood you ransomed us for God out of every race, language, people and nation"
Jesus, Lamb of God in heaven. We praise you Lord

Listen

Luke 2.39-52: Joseph and Mary moved back to their own town of Nazareth. The child Jesus was filled with wisdom as he grew older. Each year  Joseph and Mary would take Jesus to Jerusalem for the celebration of the  Passover. When Jesus was 12 years old, they went to Jerusalem as usual. But when their travelling group left Jerusalem, Jesus stayed behind without his parents knowing it.  They presumed he was somewhere with the group. When they couldn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After 2 days, they found him,  in the Temple, listening to the religion teachers and asking them questions. People who heard him were astounded at his intelligence. His mother said to him "My child, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been really worried about you". Jesus replied "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I must be concerned with my Father's work?"  But they didn't understand what he meant. He went with them to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother stored all these things in her heart
Jesus, please help all "lost children" to be found!

Genesis 14-15: In the land of Canaan there were many kings. Sometimes they went to war against each other. Melchizedek, king of Salem, was also a priest of God. Abraham gave Melchizedek 10% of all his possessions. Melchizedek gave Abraham bread and wine. Melchizedek asked God to give Abraham a special blessing. God said to Abraham, "This land of Canaan is yours;  I give it to you and your descendants."
Dear God, please help all the kings and leaders in the world to be friends

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Revelation 4.1-11: In my vision I saw a door open in heaven. The same voice as before said to me "Come up here. I will show you what is to come in the future". I saw God in all his glory, being worshipped by the angels who sang: "Holy, Holy, Holy
is the Lord God, the Almighty
". And I saw 24 elders around the throne. They were praising God saying "You are our Lord and our God. You are worthy of glory and honor and power because you are the Creator of the universe"

"Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God, Almighty. Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee"

Listen

Luke 2.21-32: When the baby was circumcised on the 8th day, he was given the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him 9 months before. When Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as the Law required. In Jerusalem there was an old man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying "Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel"
Jesus, true Light of the world, we praise you Lord

Yesterday I went with Eddie Chan (MercyHK Director) and Simon (MercyHK social work assistant) to Cheung Chau Island where we welcomed two new residents, one for our men's centre and one for our women's centre. After we had a meal at which everyone enjoyed a lovely cake for Simon's birthday, CSD rehabilitation officers joined the group. Before the meal, a meeting was held at the men's centre to restructure its organisation.

Genesis 12-13God said to a man in the land of Haran named Abraham, "Leave your own country and go to a new land I will give you. I will make you into a great nation." So Abraham and his family left the land of Haran and moved to the land of Canaan. God said to Abraham, "I will make your descendants as many as the number of dust particles on the ground .... an uncountable number." Even though Abraham and his wife Sarah were old and had no children, Abraham believed God's promise to give them many descendants.
Dear God, please help me to trust you like Abraham

Recording

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Recording

Revelation 3.14-17: He gave me this message for the church in Laodicea: "You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other. But since you are lukewarm, you are cutting yourself off from me. You are rich in this word's goods, but you are spiritually poor. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, please don't ever let me become a lukewarm Christian

Luke 2.15-20: After the angels went away, the shepherds said to one another "Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about". So they quickly went and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. People who heard the shepherds talk about the angels were amazed. As for Mary, she treasured every moment of what had happened and pondered the whole event in her heart. The shepherds went back to their fields glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen
Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Christ the Lord

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for two cases, both concerning drug trafficking. How I wish there could be a traffic jam to stop drugs travelling!

From the High Court I went to the nearby Chinese University office to enrol some prisoners for courses. Then to a lunch meeting in Central to do with prisoners.

Yesterday afternoon was spent at the desk trying to catch up on a mountain of office jobs.

Genesis 7-9: Noah's family and many animals went into the big boat, the "ark". Then for about 40 days there was heavy rain which caused a great  flood. The ark floated on the water. The people and animals inside the ark were safe but people and animals outside the ark died. When the rain and flood stopped Noah and his family and the animals went out of the ark. God made a special agreement (covenant) with Noah to bless Noah and his family. God told Noah that the rainbow would be a sign of their agreement.
Dear God, thank you for making the rainbow so beautiful

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor,
great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe

Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Revelation 3.7-9: He gave me this message for the church in Philadelphia: "I am opening a new door of opportunity for you

Luke 2.9-14: Not far from where Mary had her baby, there were shepherds who lived in the fields and took it in turns to watch their sheep during the night. Today in the town of David, a savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. Look for a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger". Suddenly with the angel there were many other angels, praising God and singing "Glory to God in heaven, and peace to people on earth"
"O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord"
