SCMP FB video report  about my work for the homeless has had 155k views and 4,300 likes, 286 comments (... check the comments!). Hope it does a bit of good to encourage govt to do more for the homeless. Many thanks to so many people who have sent me W/App and email messages about the report. Will take me several days to reply. God bless you all!

Yesterday I was in Lai Chi Kok men's prison for about six hours .... on a very hot but very worthwhile day. As usual I came away with loads of homework to do on behalf of prisoners.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 25: After Abraham died, God blessed Abraham's son Isaac. For a long time Isaac's wife Rebecca could not have children. Then after Isaac prayed for her, she had twin boys - Esau and Jacob. Esau became a hunter. Jacob helped at home.
Isaac favored Esau. Rebecca preferred Jacob. There was a strong rivalry between the two boys. Once when Esau came home seriously ill, he agreed to give Jacob his rights as first born son in exchange for some soup Jacob had made.

Dear God, please help childless couples to have a baby

My recording of this reading

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them.
He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader.
God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.

Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Revelation 14.6-13: I saw an angel flying high in the sky, sent to announce the Good News of eternity to every nation, race, language and tribe. He was calling: "Honor God and praise him. Worship the maker of heaven and earth and sea. The time has come for him to judge the world". A voice from heaven said to me. "Happy are those who are the Lord's friends when they die. Now they can rejoice for ever, since their good deeds go with them"
Jesus, may I live, grow and die in your friendship

Listen

Luke 4.23-30: People in the prayer hall rejected Jesus. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He's just the son of Joseph". Jesus replied "No prophet is ever accepted in his own country". The angry people then took Jesus by force to the edge of the hill on which  Nazareth  was built. They planned to throw him down the cliff. But Jesus escaped from them and went away Jesus, please forgive people who reject you. Please help them accept you

Today a holiday in HK for the Dragon Boat Festival .... and a holiday in most parts of Australia for the Queen's Birthday. But no dragon boat racing this year because of Covid-19 restrictions.

After 10am Mass at Yau Ma Tei yesterday morning and early lunch with a resident of the Alhambra Building where many homeless people are now accommodated, I had a rest before taking part in several gatherings in the afternoon .... for MercyHK team members, for people praying for healing, for people who were in detention and for people who kindly visit prisoners. The afternoon healing/prison group is evolving into a lovely family group. (And see below!)

Genesis 23-24: Not long after his wife Sarah died Abraham told his number one servant to go back to Haran and find a wife for his son Isaac. The servant went to Haran, to the town of Nahor. When women were getting water from the well in Nahor
the servant prayed to God for help to find a wife for Isaac. He said to God, "If I ask a woman for a drink and she answers
'Please take some of my water, and I'll give some to your camels, too' may she be the one you have chosen for Isaac."

Listen to Chapters 23, 24 (a)

He had barely finished his prayer when Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel came to the well. She was very beautiful and not married.
The servant asked her for water  and she said "Drink, sir...and I'll get water for your camels, too." Bethuel, a relative of Abraham, gladly agreed for Rebecca to go with the servant to be Isaac's wife. Rebecca herself was happy with the plan. Isaac married Rebecca and loved her dearly.

Dear God, please help people to find "Mr/Mrs Right"

Listen to Chapters 23, 24 (b)

Psalms 73-77: Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper, I wonder what's the use in trying to be good? But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see our world and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people. So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

Listen

Revelation 13.2-12: The dragon gave authority and power to a beast with seven heads. For a time, the beast waged war on the saints. Then I saw a second beast. It was a servant of the first beast, and made people everywhere worship the first beast
Father, Son and Holy Spirit - may people worship you, and not worship Satan and the two beasts

Listen

Luke 4.14-22: Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee. He taught in local prayer halls. His reputation spread. He came to his home town of Nazareth and went to the prayer hall on the Sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up and read these words from the prophet Isaiah: "The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free". Jesus then sat down and said to the people in the prayer hall "These words from Isaiah are being fulfilled today even as you listen"
Jesus, please help me be more open to the power of your Spirit. O Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

Reflection on the above readings: Our whole world - especially poor people - urgently needs the Good News that only Jesus can give

The Doctor Jesus prayer room in Temple Street has a slight problem of water leakage from the roof ....which is why, temporarily, there are several large containers to catch falling water. But yesterday I reflected on the location of the containers:

The containers are right below this image of Jesus changing water to wine:

... just in case some wine spills over?!? Or maybe the leaking water might be changed into wine?!?

c.f. readings for Sunday 11

Ezekiel 17: The Lord says this: "From the top of the cedar, from the highest branch I will take a shoot and plant it myself on a very high mountain. I will plant it on the high mountain of Israel. It will sprout branches and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Every kind of bird will live beneath it, every winged creature rest in the shade of its branches. And every tree of the field will learn that I, the Lord, am the one who stunts tall trees and makes the low ones grow, who withers green trees and makes the withered green. I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do it."

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

 Listen

2 Corinthians 5: We are always full of confidence when we remember that to live in the body means to be exiled from the Lord, going as we do by faith and not by sight, we are full of confidence, I say, and actually want to be exiled from the body and make our home with the Lord. Whether we are living in the body or exiled from it, we are intent on pleasing him. For all the truth about us will be brought out in the law court of Christ, and each of us will get what he deserves for the things he did in the body, good or bad.

Mark 4: Jesus said to the crowds: "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come."  He also said, "What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade."

Mt13.32a.jpg (122943 bytes)

Reflection on the above readings:  Jesus said his kingdom, his tree, would grow exponentially .... so that today there is a church/branch (pun intended) in almost every part of most countries in the world  . ... fulfilling the prophecy of Ezekiel

Genesis 22: Abraham loved God very dearly. Once when God put him to the test Abraham was even willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac if that was what God wanted. When God saw Abraham's love and obedience God renewed his promise to make Abraham and Isaac's descendants as many as the stars of heaven
Dear God, please help us love and obey you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Revelation 12.7-14: Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon and his angels. Michael won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the serpent, known as the Devil or Satan, was hurled down to earth. His angels were hurled down with him. The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman - those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus
Jesus, may your holy angels protect us from Satan

Luke 2.39-52 (for feast of Immaculate Heart of Mary)Joseph and Mary moved back to their own town of Nazareth. The child Jesus was filled with wisdom as he grew older. Each year  Joseph and Mary would take Jesus to Jerusalem for the celebration of the  Passover. When Jesus was 12 years old, they went to Jerusalem as usual. But when their traveling group left Jerusalem, Jesus stayed behind without his parents knowing it.  They presumed he was somewhere with the group. When they couldn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After 2 days, they found him,  in the Temple, listening to the religion teachers and asking them questions. People who heard him were astounded at his intelligence. His mother said to him "My child, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been really worried about you". Jesus replied "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I must be concerned with my Father's work?"  But they didn't understand what he meant. He went with them to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother stored all these things in her heart
Jesus, please help all "lost children" to be found!

Readings from Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
My recording of this reading

Ephesians 3.14-21: This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name: May he give you  power through his Spirit, for your hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith. Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love.
Glory be to him whose power  working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

Recording

Matthew 11.25-30: One day Jesus prayed: Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am joyfully amazed at the way simple people understand and accept what I'm saying, while proud and clever people miss the plot. And he said to the ordinary people: Come to me, all you who are treated unfairly by unjust religious laws. I will give you peace and justice. Learn from me, and you will know peace, for I am gentle and humble of heart
Jesus, please help people who are suffering from unjust religious laws

Recording

John 19.31-37: The next day was the Passover. To prevent the bodies remaining on the crosses during the Passover, the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. Instead of breaking his legs, they pierced his side with a spear.  Immediately there came out blood and water. And so the Scriptures were fulfilled "Not one of his bones will be broken" and "They will look on the one they have pierced".
Jesus, please help me understand how blood and water are symbols of the Eucharist and Baptism

Genesis 20-21Abraham and his wife Sarah were old people but God blessed them with a son. They named their son Isaac.
Sarah again made life difficult for Hagar and Hagar's son. Hagar and her son had to leave Abraham's home but God protected them and found them a new home.
Dear God, please don't let me make life difficult for anyone else

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Revelation 12.1-6: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with 12 stars. She was giving birth to a child, and she cried out in the pain of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared: a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the child. The woman gave birth to a son, the ruler of all nations. The son was taken straight up to heaven, to God on his throne. The woman escaped to safety in the desert, to a place prepared for her by God

Luke 4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted by the Devil. The Devil said "If you are the Son of God, turn a stone into bread". Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone". The Devil took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be yours" he said. Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God". Then the Devil took him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels protect you". Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not put the Lord our God to the test".  The Devil then left him
Jesus, protect us from the Devil and all evil

Genesis 19: The men of Sodom practised sodomy. They wanted to abuse the two angels who looked like men when the angels visited the home of Abraham's nephew, Lot. So the angels struck the threatening men with blindness. Then the angels told Lot and his family to leave Sodom immediately because it would soon be destroyed. As soon as Lot and his family had left Sodom
the town was destroyed by a volcanic storm

Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

My recording of this reading

Psalms 69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our assistance. Lord make haste to help us

Revelation 8.1 - 11.18: I saw how punishment is coming for all evil doers on the earth. I heard voices shouting: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and his Christ. He will reign for ever and ever". The 24 elders worshipped God saying: "We give thanks to you, Almighty Lord God. The time has come for everyone to be judged. The time has come for good people to be rewarded and bad people to be punished"
Jesus, please help bad people stop being bad

Luke 3.15-22: John the Baptist said to the people "I baptize you with water, but someone more powerful than I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. I am not fit to undo the strap of the powerful one's sandals". Jesus then came and was baptized by John. While Jesus was praying after his baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the shape of a dove. And a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you"
Jesus, Beloved Son, please baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life
