Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for two cases ..... on tomorrow's menu I hope to be able to report good news about one of the cases! From the High Court I went to the nearby office of the Chinese University to enrol some prisoners. Then back to Yau Ma Tei for lunch with two special friends of MercyHK. Then a rest followed by much office work.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 32: As Jacob returned to his own land of Canaan, he feared that his brother Esau would  try to kill him. So Jacob, always clever and wily, sent messengers ahead of him to make friends with Esau. The messengers reported that Esau was on his way to meet Jacob and had 400 men with him. This news increased Jacob's fears so he divided his family and flocks into two groups, thinking that if Esau attacked one group then the other group could escape. Jacob also prayed hard to God for protection. Jacob sent gifts of animals to Esau, hoping that Esau would be friendly to him. On the night before Jacob and Esau met, God appeared to Jacob and gave him a new name: Israel.
Dear God, please help me to be kind and clever

My recording of this reading

Psalm 86:
Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer for I am poor and needy. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart
for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant and save your handmaid's son.

Dear Lord, thank you for all your love

Revelation 21.5-8: Then the One sitting on the throne said "Now I am making the whole of creation new. I am the Beginning and the End. I give Eternal Life to all who die in my friendship. But for those whose evil deeds have removed themselves from my friendship, there is Eternal Death"
Jesus, have mercy on people who are rejecting your friendship

Listen

Luke 5.27-32: As Jesus walked along, he noticed a tax collector sitting by the customs house. The collector's name was Levi (Matthew). Jesus said to him "Follow me".  Leaving everything, he got up and went with Jesus. In Jesus' honor Levi held a banquet in his house. Many  tax collectors and social outcasts were present. The religious leaders complained "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and outcasts?" Jesus replied "It is not those who are well who need the doctor, but the sick. I have come to call sinners, not the virtuous, to repentance"
Jesus, thank you for befriending people who were looked down on. Please help me do likewise

Genesis 31: Jacob said to Rachel and Leah. "You know how hard I have worked for your father, yet he has treated me unfairly - ten times he changed my wages. Now God has told me to go back to my own land. So, get ready, we are going." Jacob took his wives, children and livestock and left  - without telling Laban. Only after three days did Laban find out that Jacob had outsmarted him. Laban chased Jacob, but God told Laban not to hurt Jacob. So Laban made a treaty with Jacob and let him go on his way.
Dear God, please help us to treat everyone fairly

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps
Lord, please give more peace to our world

Listen

Revelation 21.1-4: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, as beautiful as a bride all dressed for her husband. I heard a voice call from the throne: "You see this city? Here God lives among people. He will make his home among them. They shall be his people. He will be their God. His name is God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more sadness. The world of the past has gone
Jesus, may the thought of heaven give us courage here on earth

Luke 5.17-26: God's power was on display when Jesus healed people. People came from far and near to hear him teach, and to ask for healing. One day some people carried  a paralyzed man through a crowd to Jesus. The man was on a stretcher. Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them, so he said to the paralyzed man "My friend, your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins. So Jesus said to the leaders "Which is easier: to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'?" Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed man "Get up, pick up your bed and go home". The man got up, picked up his stretcher and went home. The crowd praised God for what they had seen.
Jesus, please give me more faith in your power to forgive, your power to heal

c.f. readings for Sunday 12

Job 38: 1, 8-11: From the heart of the tempest the Lord gave Job his answer. He said: "Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous out of the womb; when I wrapped it in a robe of mist  and made black clouds its swaddling bands; when I marked the bounds it was not to cross, and made it fast with a bolted gate? Come thus far, I said, and no farther: here your proud waves shall break"

Lord, the sea belongs to you, for you made it
My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: Some sailed to the sea in ships to trade on the mighty waters. These men have seen the Lord’s deeds, the wonders he does in the deep. For he spoke; he summoned the gale, tossing the waves of the sea up to heaven and back into the deep; their souls melted away in their distress. Then they cried to the Lord in their need, and he rescued them from their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper. All the waves of the sea were hushed

Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love
Recording

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"

- from  How Great Thou Art

Recording

Mark 4.35-41: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. A sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up  and said "Save us, Lord, we are sinking". Jesus stood up, and ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. Jesus' friends said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Jesus, please calm the storms in my life, my family, our world

Sat June 19

Yesterday morning I was again at the High Court in connection with several cases. At lunch time at the Dr Jesus Centre I joined my social worker assistant Simon for our weekly lunch with "mothers who work on Temple Street" (... let the reader understand). Simon, Sr Louise and I then took part  in the weekly 3pm gathering at the centre for homeless people ... another group forming beautifully into an extended family. Last night I visited the Yau Ma Tei clinic area where the OMI team gave out rice boxes to around 300 poor people.

Genesis 30: Leah gave birth to four sons - Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah. Rachel had no children and was jealous of her sister Leah. Rachel gave her servant girl Bilhah to Jacob and Bilhah gave birth to two sons - Dan and Naphtali. Leah then gave her servant girl Zilpah to Jacob and Zilpah gave birth to two sons - Gad and Asher. Leah herself had two more sons - Issachar and Zebulun and a daughter - Dinah. Finally Rachel had a baby, a son whom she named Joseph. For many long years Jacob worked for Laban but Laban would not let Jacob return to his own land.
Dear God, please bless everyone in my family

My recording of this reading

Psalm 84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord. My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your temple guests. They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple. And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life, you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Dear God, thank you for special places of prayer

Listen

Revelation 20.11-15: Then I saw God sitting on a great white throne. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing in front of his throne, while the Book of Life was opened, in which was the record of everyone's life. Everyone was judged according to the way they had lived. Then Death and Hades were thrown into a burning lake. This burning lake is the second death. Anyone whose name could not be found in the Book of Life was thrown into the burning lake
Jesus, may all near and dear to me, be in the Book of Life

Listen

Luke 5.12-16: In one town that Jesus went to, a leper fell on his face and pleaded "Sir, if you want to, you can heal me". Jesus stretched out  his hand, touched him, and said "Of course I want to!  Be healed!" And the leprosy left him at once. Jesus' reputation continued to grow.  Large crowds gathered to hear him speak and to have their sicknesses cured. But afterwards Jesus would always go to a quiet place where he could be alone and pray
Jesus, please help me understand that you want sick people to be healed

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Never once did Jesus say "No" to a request for healing. His policy in the Gospels ... and today: "Of course I want to heal you!"

Genesis 29: Jacob went to the home of his uncle Laban, in Haran. Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. Jacob fell in love with Rachel. Jacob made an agreement with Laban: Jacob would work for Laban for seven years in return for marriage to Rachel. For Jacob,  the seven years went like a flash because he loved Rachel so dearly. But Laban forced Jacob to marry both Leah and Rachel and made him work for another seven years as well.
Dear God, please help us to enjoy our work

My recording of this reading

Psalms 82-83: God says to corrupt officials: "How long will you judge unjustly and mistreat the poor? You should do justice for the weak and the orphan. You should defend the afflicted and the needy. You should rescue the weak and the poor. You should set them free from the hand of the wicked". O God, please protect your people from corruption and injustice. Save us also from attack by other nations. Let everyone know that you are the Lord of all the earth.
Lord, please stop corrupt officials from hurting people

Revelation 19.1-9: After this I heard the sound of a huge crowd in heaven singing: "Alleluia! Victory and glory and power to our God!" The sound of the crowd was like the sound of the ocean or the roar of thunder as they called out: "Alleluia! The reign of the Lord our God the Almighty has begun. Let us be glad and joyful, and give praise to God, because this is the time for the marriage of the Lamb". And an angel said "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb"
Jesus, even on this earth, may I start to hear the sounds of heaven

Luke 5.1-11: One day when Jesus was standing near the Lake of Gennesaret, with people pressing round him listening to the word of God, he saw two fishing boats near the bank. He got into one boat, it belonged to Simon Peter, and taught people from the boat, away from the shore a little distance. When he'd finished speaking he said to Simon "Go out further to deep water and use your nets for a catch of fish". Simon replied "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but if you say so I'll lower the nets". They soon caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. They called to their friends in the second boat to come and help. Both boats were soon filled with fish. Peter fell at Jesus' knees and said "Leave me, Lord, I am a sinful man", for he was overcome by the catch they had made, as were James and John who were his partners. But Jesus said to Simon "Don't be afraid. From now on, you will be fishers of men".  Simon and his friends then left everything to follow Jesus
Jesus,  bless and protect  all "fishers of men"

Thu June 17

Yesterday afternoon I spent several hours with a group of 9 wonderful young people from the HK Christian Council (... like the Council of Churches in other places). After a visit to MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan, the group took part in a sharing session at the next door 187 Dr Jesus Centre .... followed by a walking tour of the nearby area, meeting a number of homeless people, drug addicts and other needy people .... finishing with a visit to two rooms at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei for a chat with formerly homeless people now provided with accommodation by MercyHK. A happy afternoon. God bless the group and the HK Christian Council!

Genesis 28When Rebecca sent Jacob to Haran, she and Isaac told Jacob to find a wife in Haran. While Jacob was on his way to Haran, God appeared to him in a dream and said to him "I will keep you safe wherever you go, and I'll bring you back safely to your own land."

Psalm 81: Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob. Listen to the voice of the Lord: "I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. Revelation 18.1-4: I saw another angel, shouting at the top of his voice: "Babylon has fallen, Babylon the Great has fallen. Gone for ever, never to return, is your life of magnificence and ease". Jesus, please help us not be contaminated by worldly values

Luke 4.38-44: Jesus went to the home of Simon Peter. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus was asked to help her. He bent over her, rebuked the fever and it left her. She immediately got up and served her guests. After the Sabbath finished at sunset, everyone who had sick friends brought them to Jesus. Laying his hands on each of them, he healed them. The next morning Jesus got up early and went to a lonely place to pray.  People found him and asked him not to leave the area. But he replied "I must proclaim the Good News of the kingdom of God to other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do"

Early yesterday afternoon I took part in an interview project at Good Hope Primary School in Ngau Chi Wan (above Choi Hung, Kowloon). Then a visit to the school's kindergarten section ... then a meeting with about 20 ancillary staff who, for Mother's Day, made beautiful memos, the very sizeable proceeds of which was yesterday kindly given to me to help the work of MercyHK in caring for homeless people. Genesis 26-27: God blessed and protected Isaac all his life. When Isaac grew old and was nearly blind, he followed the usual custom of giving his final blessing to his sons. He wanted to bless Esau first, since Esau was his older son. But Rebecca and Jacob tricked Isaac. Jacob dressed in Esau's clothes and put hairy animal skins on his arms. Before Esau came home, Jacob asked for Isaac's blessing. Isaac said "Your voice is that of Jacob, but your arms and scent are those of Esau. Are you really Esau?" Jacob said "I am." Isaac then gave him his solemn blessing. When Esau found out what had happened, he was very angry and planned to kill Jacob. So Rebecca got Jacob to go to Haran until Esau's anger cooled down.

Psalms 79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us.
If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our  history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Luke 4.31-37: Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught in the local prayer hall. Jesus said sharply "Be quiet! Come out of him". And the devil left the man without hurting him. People in the hall said "He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey him". Jesus' reputation continued to spread through the district
