c.f. readings for Feast of Peter & Paul

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him.
Jesus, please help Christians who are in prison for their faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day
Recording

2 Timothy 4.6-8:
As for me, my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to the end. I have run the race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me, but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life.
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Recording

Matthew 16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God,  please help the church to continue your work on earth

Mon June 28

Yesterday morning I attended the annual feast day Mass of St Paul's Parish in Yau Ma Tei. In the afternoon I had a sharing session with two groups of Year 11 students ... before they visited two rooms at the Alhambra Building in YMT whose guests used to sleep "on the street".

In the early evening a very happy meal with two women acquitted last week by the High Court from charges of drug trafficking .... after 2 and a half years in detention. 18 people at the meal ... including kind prison visitors who used to visit the two women. The two women are due to leave HK tomorrow, one on a flight to Indonesia, the other on a flight to Malaysia.

Genesis 38: Jacob's son Judah had three sons - Er, Onan and Shelah. Er married Tamar, but not long after the wedding, Er died. So, according to custom, Judah asked Onan to marry Tamar and have a child for his brother. But Onan spilt his seed each time he slept with Tamar, so Tamar did not conceive. Judah then said to Tamar "Wait till Shelah grows up, and you can marry him." But when Shelah was older, he still hadn't been given to Tamar. So Tamar tricked her father-in-law Judah. She dressed as a prostitute and conceived a baby by Judah. Judah did not know that the woman was Tamar; her face was covered. Three months later  Judah was told that his daughter-in-law was pregnant after acting as a prostitute. Judah followed the harsh local custom and said "Take her outside and burn her." But Tamar  produced Judah's seal, stick and cord which he had given to her as a pledge when he had sex with her. So Judah admitted his guilt and freed Tamar who gave birth to twin boys.
Dear God, please help married people to be happy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Acts 1.1-5: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the Gospel of Luke) I wrote about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God. He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit"
Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, increase your influence in my life

Listen

Luke 6.20-26: Jesus said to his disciples "Blessed are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry: you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now: you shall be happy. Blessed are you when people hate you because of me: your reward will be great in heaven. But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is only in this world. Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep"
Jesus, please help me to give more time and importance to the things that really matter

c.f. readings for Sunday 13

Wisdom 1.13-24: Death was not God's doing, he takes no pleasure in the extinction of the living. To be - for this he created all;
the world's created things have health in them, in them no fatal poison can be found, and Hades holds no power on earth; for virtue is undying. Yet God did make man imperishable, he made him in the image of his own nature; it was the devil's envy that brought death into the world, as those who are his partners will discover.

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

 Listen

2 Corinthians 8-9: Remember how generous the Lord Jesus was. He was rich, but he became poor for our sake, to make us rich. So we also should help people who are poor. If we have extra, we should help people who don't have enough. Maybe some day, the same poor people will be rich, and we will be poor, and they will help us. And don't forget, God loves a cheerful giver
Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

 Listen

Mark 5.21-43: A prayer hall official, Jairus, fell at Jesus' feet and pleaded "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her and save her life". While Jesus was on the way to Jairus' home, people arrived and told Jairus "Your daughter is dead. No need to trouble the Master any further". Jesus heard this and said to Jairus "Do not be afraid. Just have faith". Jesus allowed only Peter, James and John to go with him. At Jairus' home, everyone was weeping and wailing. Jesus said to them "Why all this crying? The child is not dead, but asleep". Everyone laughed at him. So he got them all to leave. Then taking the girl's parents and his 3 companions, he went to the place where the child was lying. Taking the girl by the hand he said to her "Little girl, I tell you to get up". The little girl got up at once.  She was 12 years old.
Jesus, please give us more faith to pray for the sick .... even for children who have died!

Sat June 26

On June 22 two women - one from Indonesia, one from Malaysia - were acquitted by two separate judges at the High Court. Yesterday afternoon the two women came to the Dr Jesus Centre to make anonymous videos that will be part of my anti-drug campaign warning people about the danger of drug trafficking. And what a happy re-union it was for the women - they had both been in Tai Lam women's prison for more than two years and knew each other well. Videos will be put on this menu in the near future. God bless the two women ... and the kind movie-maker!

Last night after I farewelled the above visitors, a young woman from Northern China who works on Temple Street (... let the reader understand ...) asked me to pray for her ex-husband who is very ill in hospital in Northern China. Jesus, please heal that man!

Genesis 37: Jacob loved Joseph more than  his other sons because Joseph was the son of his old age. Jacob had a special coat of many colors made for Joseph. Joseph's older brothers were jealous of Joseph and hated him. Joseph had a dream: he became a famous person. This made his brothers hate him all the more. One day, when the brothers were looking after their sheep in a distant place, Jacob sent Joseph to see how they were. When the brothers saw Joseph coming some of them wanted to kill him.
Eventually they sold Joseph to some slave traders for 20 silver pieces. The slave traders took Joseph to Egypt and re-sold him there. The brothers told Jacob that a wild animal had killed Joseph. Jacob was heart broken and mourned Joseph all the time.
Dear God, please help me not to be jealous of other people

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Revelation 22.16-20: "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to make these revelations to you for the sake of the churches. I am of David's line, the Root of David, the Bright Star of the Morning". The Spirit and the Bride say: "Come". Let all who want eternal life say: "Come". Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Come Lord Jesus! Come into my heart! Come into our world!

Luke 6.12-16: Jesus went to the hills to pray. He spent a whole night praying. In the morning he called all his disciples together. He chose 12 of them and called them "apostles": Peter and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon, Judas son of James - and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor. Jesus and the 12 came down from the hill to a place of level ground. Gathered there were his many disciples and a large crowd of people from all over the country who had come to hear him and to be healed of diseases. People in the crowd tried to touch Jesus because power came out of him that cured everyone

Genesis 35-36: God said to Jacob "Go to Bethel and live there." So Jacob moved to the area of Bethel. Not long after this,
Rachel conceived another baby. But Rachel died in childbirth. Jacob named the baby boy Benjamin. In all, Jacob had 12 sons:
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun  - their mother being Leah; Joseph and Benjamin - their mother being Rachel; Dan and Naphtali - their mother being Bilhah; Gad and Asher - their mother being Zilpah. Jacob and his family stayed in the land of Canaan, the land of his father Isaac. Esau and his family moved to the land of Edom.

Psalm 88: Lord my God, day and night I call to you for help. Please turn your ear to my cry. For my soul is filled with evils. My life is on the brink of the grave. I am reckoned as one in the tomb. I have reached the end of my strength. Will your love be told in the grave? Will your wonders be known in the dark? Fear surrounds me like a flood. All my friends have deserted me. My only companion is darkness.
Lord, please help people who are in despair

Revelation 22.1-5: Then an angel showed me the River of Life, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb,  flowing crystal-clear through the middle of the city. Here God's servants will worship him. They will see him face to face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. It will never be night again. They will not need lamplight or sunlight, because the Lord God will be shining on them
Jesus, may your name be written on my forehead

Luke 6.6-11: On another Sabbath Jesus  visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the prayer hall. Some religious leaders were watching to see if Jesus would heal the man (since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, and they regarded healing as work). Jesus knew what they were thinking,  so he said to the man with the withered hand "Stand up! Come out into the middle of the hall". He came out and stood there. Jesus then asked the leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil; to save life or to destroy it?" Then he said to the man with the withered hand "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed. The leaders were very angry. They left the prayer hall and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus

Thu June 24Birthday of John the Baptist

After Mass at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei yesterday morning, I spent a few hours at the desk before going to HK Island for a meeting with lawyers about a case coming soon to the High Court. Then back to St Paul's in the evening for monthly meeting of St Vincent de Paul Society which is really active in the local area helping poor people.

This is why HK people are extremely nervous about becoming just another city of China: China's secret jails

c.f. Readings for Birthday of John the Baptist

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord  said to me: 'I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget her baby, or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you".
Lord, please help me understand how you loved me even before I was born.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

 Listen

Acts 13: Paul said: God deposed Saul and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, "I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose." To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal." "My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you.

Luke 1.67-80: When John was named, his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and said "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. He has visited his people. And you, little child, you shall be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him". When John grew older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his ministry.
Jesus, please help me prepare your way by helping people to know you

Reflection on the above readings: Why June 24 for John the Baptist? Because Jesus was conceived in the 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy .... so John was born 6 months (approximately) before Jesus ... and 6 months before Dec 25 is June 24. Let's think of the baby baptist if we happen to see any babies today!

A record? Yesterday at the High Court, four (!) people accused of drug trafficking - all arrested at HK airport - were acquitted by judge/jury: Two Indonesian women, a Malaysian woman, and an elderly US man. Maybe the Department of Justice should hold an inquiry as how such "weak cases" (... no direct evidence ...) were allowed to proceed and waste so much time and money ... not to mention causing innocent people to be incarcerated for up to two years while waiting for trial.

Yesterday I was at Tai Lam women's prison for about 5 hours ... meeting a few more people in the above category!

Genesis 33-34: When Esau and Jacob met, Esau was friendly and kind to Jacob. Esau accepted all the gifts of animals that Jacob gave him. But Jacob continued to be wary of Esau. Jacob moved to Shechem. One of the men of Shechem raped and then wanted to marry Jacob's daughter, Dinah. Jacob and his sons craftily said they would agree to the marriage if all of the men of Shechem were circumcised. The men agreed. But on the third day while the Shechem men were still in a lot of pain
Jacob's sons Simeon and Levi took matters into their own hands. They killed all the Shechem men, because their sister Dinah had been raped. Jacob did not approve of the killings.

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.

Revelation 21.10-23: I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's glory, and glittered like a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city, since the Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need sun or  moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of the Lamb

Luke 6.1-5: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry. They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees. So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. I am Master of the Sabbath"
