c.f. readings for Feast of Peter & Paul
Acts
12.1-17: About this time,
King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother
of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and
planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was
in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he
was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with
chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was
filled with light, and an
angel told him to get up. The
chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison,
without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another
place. Herod was unable to find him.
Jesus, please help Christians who are in prison for their faith

Psalm
34: I will bless the Lord at
all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its
boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let
us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he
set me free. The
angel of the Lord is
encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that
the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to
the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness
each day

2 Timothy 4.6-8: As for me,
my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to
the end. I have run the
race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the
best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me,
but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life.
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Matthew
16.13-20: One day Jesus asked
his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples
replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus
then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say
I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God". Jesus
then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed
this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this
rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God, please help the church to continue your work on
earth

Yesterday morning I attended the annual feast day Mass of St Paul's Parish in Yau Ma Tei. In the afternoon I had a sharing session with two groups of Year 11 students ... before they visited two rooms at the Alhambra Building in YMT whose guests used to sleep "on the street".
In the early evening a very happy meal with two women acquitted last week by the High Court from charges of drug trafficking .... after 2 and a half years in detention. 18 people at the meal ... including kind prison visitors who used to visit the two women. The two women are due to leave HK tomorrow, one on a flight to Indonesia, the other on a flight to Malaysia.

Genesis
38: Jacob's son Judah had
three sons - Er, Onan and Shelah.
Er married Tamar,
but not long after the wedding, Er died.
So, according to custom, Judah asked Onan to marry Tamar and have a child for his brother.
But Onan spilt his seed each time he slept with Tamar,
so Tamar did not conceive.
Judah then said to Tamar "Wait till Shelah grows up,
and you can marry him."
But when Shelah was older,
he still hadn't been given to Tamar.
So Tamar tricked her father-in-law Judah.
She dressed as a prostitute
and conceived a baby by Judah.
Judah did not know that the woman was Tamar;
her face was covered.
Three months later Judah was told that his daughter-in-law
was pregnant after acting as a prostitute.
Judah followed the harsh local custom and said
"Take her outside and burn her."
But Tamar produced Judah's seal, stick and cord
which he had given to her as a pledge when he had sex with her.
So Judah admitted his guilt and freed Tamar
who gave birth to twin boys.
Dear God, please

Psalm
90: O Lord you have been our refuge from
one generation to the next. Before the
earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a
thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We
humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or
80 for those who are strong. Make us
know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the
morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord,
help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Acts
1.1-5: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the
Gospel of Luke) I wrote
about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to
his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God.

promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit"

Blessed are you who weep now: you shall be happy. Blessed are you when people hate you because
of me:
your reward will be great in heaven. But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is
only in this world.
Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry.
Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep"
Jesus, please help me to give more time and

Corinthians 8-9: Remember

to make us rich. So we also should help

poor, and they will help us. And don't forget, God loves a cheerful giver

Mark
5.21-43: A prayer hall
official, Jairus, fell at Jesus' feet and pleaded "My little daughter is
dying. Please come and lay your hands on her and save her life". While
Jesus was on the way to Jairus' home, people arrived and told Jairus "Your
daughter is dead. No need to trouble the Master any further". Jesus heard
this and said to Jairus "Do not be afraid. Just have faith". Jesus
allowed only Peter, James and John to go with him. At Jairus' home, everyone was
weeping and wailing. Jesus said to them "Why all this crying? The child is
not dead, but asleep". Everyone laughed at him. So he got them all to
leave. Then taking the girl's parents and his 3 companions, he went to the place
where the child was lying. Taking the girl by the hand he said to her "Little
girl, I tell you to get up". The little girl got up at once.
She was 12 years old.
Jesus, please give us more faith to pray for the sick .... even for children
who have died!

Genesis
37: Jacob loved Joseph more
than his other sons
because Joseph was the son of his old age.
Jacob had a special coat of many colors made for Joseph.
Joseph's older brothers were jealous of Joseph and hated him.
Joseph had a dream: he became a famous person.
This made his brothers hate him all the more.
One day, when the brothers were looking after their sheep
in a distant place,
Jacob sent Joseph to see how they were.
When the brothers saw Joseph coming
some of them wanted to kill him.
Eventually they sold Joseph to some slave traders
for 20 silver pieces.
The slave traders took Joseph to Egypt and re-sold him there.
The brothers told Jacob that a wild animal had killed Joseph.
Jacob was heart broken and mourned Joseph all the time.
Dear God, please

Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon, Judas
son of James - and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor. Jesus and the 12 came down from the hill to a
place of level ground.
Gathered there were his many disciples and a large crowd of people from
all over the country who had come to hear him and to be healed of
diseases. People in the crowd tried to touch Jesus

Luke
6.6-11: On another Sabbath Jesus visited a prayer hall.
A man with a withered hand was in the prayer hall. Some religious leaders were watching to see if
Jesus would heal the man (since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, and
they regarded healing as work). Jesus knew what they were thinking, so
he said to the man with the withered hand "Stand up! Come out into
the middle of the hall".
He came out and stood there. Jesus then asked the leaders
"Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil; to
save life or to destroy it?" Then he said to the man with the withered hand
"Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was
healed. The leaders were very angry. They
left the prayer hall
and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus

Isaiah
46-49: The Lord called me before I
was born. From
my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled
in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the
womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord said to me: 'I
will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the
ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget

understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It

A record? Yesterday at the High Court, four (!) people accused of
drug trafficking - all arrested at HK airport - were acquitted by judge/jury:
Two Indonesian women, a Malaysian woman, and an elderly US man. Maybe the
Department of Justice should hold an inquiry as how such "weak cases"
(... no direct evidence ...) were allowed to proceed and waste so much time and
money ... not to mention causing innocent people to be incarcerated for up to
two years while waiting for trial.
Yesterday I was at Tai Lam women's prison for about 5 hours ...
