Tues July 13

Some months ago a kind friend highly recommended this amazing free site for learning languages. Yesterday I finally got round to checking it out ... for helping me learn Spanish. And I was immediately hooked ... it's addictive in a good sense! My checking out opportunity happened yesterday morning at the Chinese University office in Admiralty, while I was waiting for some applications from prisoners to be processed.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 1: After about 300 years, when the Israelites had grown to a huge number, the Egyptians began to see the Israelites as a danger to Egypt. So they forced the Israelites into slavery and made their life miserable. The Egyptians forced the Israelites to make bricks and build cities. But the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they increased in number. So the Egyptian king told the Israelite midwives to kill all new-born boys. But the midwives let the baby boys live, and God was pleased with the midwives and blessed them. Pharaoh then ordered all Israelite baby boys to be drowned in the river.
Dear God, please stop people, especially children, from being used as slaves

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

Listen

Acts 4.13-22: The religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently. The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was standing next to Peter and John. The leaders gave Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus. Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God? We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard". The leaders released the two apostles. They were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory to God for the miracle that had happened
Jesus, please help me obey you always

Listen

Luke 8.22-25: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up  and said "Master,  we are sinking". Jesus ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. The disciples said to each other "Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."
Jesus, please calm the storms in my life

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: "Obey" in 3rd reading and Gospel ... .and "good" disobedience in 1st reading.

My transport adventures to/from OMI meetings at Notre Dame in Kowloon (see this menu of July 11, below) took a new turn yesterday afternoon: I got to ND in good time for 4pm meeting, only to find that the meeting was at St Alfred's, Tai Wai! (I had failed to read re-scheduling message clearly ... and just followed note in my diary). Quick taxi solved the problem ... I was only 15 mins late. For trip home to Jordan, I had my first ride on direct train from Tai Wai to Austin station.

Mon July 12

Is it just me or have others had the same experience?! Something is not working properly .... you get an expert/repair person to come .... and the something works normally! I've had this experience with computers, a modem .... and now a leaking tap in my washbowl. Tap has been leaking for a few weeks, but when landlord came on Saturday morning ready to fix it, it did not leak! It's as if broken somethings show special respect to a doctor about to operate!

Genesis 50: After mourning their father for 70 days Joseph and his brothers went to Canaan and buried Jacob there. Many of Pharaoh's officials went with Joseph to Canaan. When the group returned to Egypt, Joseph's brothers again asked him to forgive them for selling him as a slave. Joseph replied "God has turned this evil into good, and through me has helped many people. So do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your families". Joseph lived to see his children's children. Before he died, he asked that his bones one day be taken back to Canaan.
Dear God, thank you for the beautiful story of Joseph

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Listen

Acts 4.1-12: While Peter was talking to the crowd, some religious leaders and soldiers came and arrested Peter and John. The next day the leaders held a meeting and asked the prisoners: "By what power and by whose name did you heal the crippled beggar?" Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied "The cripple is able to stand up perfectly healthy because he was healed by Jesus the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. Salvation comes no other way. Only by the name of Jesus can we be saved"
Jesus, your name means "God
saves", you are indeed the Saviour of the world

Listen

Luke 8.19-21: Jesus' mother and his brothers came looking for him. They could not get to him because of the crowd. Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers want to see you". Jesus replied "My mother and brothers are people who hear the word of God and put it into practice".
Jesus, please help me put your word into practice in my daily life

c.f. readings for Sunday 15

Amos 1-9: It was God who formed the mountains and created the wind. The Lord is his name. He says to the House of Israel: Seek me and you shall live. Do not go to the places of idol worship. Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. Hate evil and love good. Injustice and swindling, exploitation of the poor, this is the reason for earthquakes and disaster
Lord, please help me to do good and avoid evil

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps
Lord, please give more peace to our world

 Listen

Ephesians 1.1-7: From Paul, appointed to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Before the world was made, he chose us in Christ, to live through love in his presence. He chose us, in Christ, to be his adopted children, to make us praise the glory of his grace. This grace is his free gift to us in his Beloved Son, through whose blood we gain our freedom and the forgiveness of our sins.
Father, thank you for upgrading me from human child to Divine Child!

 Listen

Mark 6.7-13: Jesus went on a teaching tour of the nearby villages. He sent out  his 12 special friends in 6 pairs, with authority over evil spirits. He told them to take only bare essentials for the journey. He said "If any place does not welcome you, as you leave that place shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them". The 12 apostles preached repentance. They cast out many devils. They anointed sick people with oil and healed them.
Jesus, may every place welcome you and your messengers

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings: After being rejected (last Sunday's Gospel) in his home town of Nazareth, Jesus did not "drop his bundle" but kept going ... even expanding his ministry by sending out the apostles. May we also keep going, despite setbacks.

Genesis 47-49: Pharaoh met Jacob and Joseph's  brothers and welcomed them to be shepherds in the land of Goshen. Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Pharaoh humbly received Jacob's blessing. Joseph provided food for his family during the famine. As the famine got worse the Egyptians sold their livestock and their farms to Joseph in return for grain. Joseph made the Egyptians promise that when the famine was over they would  give one fifth of their produce to Pharaoh. Jacob lived in Egypt for seventeen more years before he died in Joseph's arms. Before his death, Jacob blessed all his sons. Jacob adopted and also blessed Joseph's two sons Ephraim and Manasseh
Dear God, please bless Egypt and Israel, and help them be friends

My recording of this reading

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples know and love you

Listen

Acts 3.9-16: When people saw the former crippled man walking, they couldn't believe their eyes. So Peter said to them "Why are you so surprised? Do you think John and I made this cripple walk? It is by our faith in Jesus that this man has been restored to health. Jesus is the Holy One, the Just One, the Prince of Life whom you handed over to Pilate for crucifixion. But God raised him from the dead
Jesus, Prince of Life, please increase my faith in you. Please give me a faith that can bring your  healing to handicapped people

Listen

Luke 8.4-15: One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest
Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Fri July 9

I spent most of yesterday at the desk, continuing to catch up on a backlog of office jobs ....e.g. each mitigation letter for the High Court can take 1-2 hours, sometimes longer. A bit like writing essays at school ... each one needs much care ... and produces a great feeling of relief when finished!

MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan continues to help needy people. Last night a prison visitor came to collect free clothing and shoes for a woman from Thailand who will soon be released after 8 years in detention and able to return to her home country. She needs larger clothing than when she came .... she has put on much weight in prison (as happens for most overseas prisoners .... the food in HK prisons is ok!)

We might need to carry 2 phones in the future for 2 mutually exclusive systems!

Words: Jesus' blood never failed me yet, Never failed me yet, Jesus' blood never failed me yet, There's one thing I know, For he loves me so  (and see comments!)

Genesis 46: Jacob and his whole family, about 70 people, took all their possessions and moved to Egypt. God said to Jacob "I myself will go down to Egypt with you". Joseph was ready for their arrival in Egypt. As soon as his father appeared, Joseph ran to greet him. Joseph threw his arms around his father and cried for a long time on his father's shoulder. Jacob said to Joseph
"Now that I have seen you again, I can die in peace".

Dear God, please help separated family members to be re-united

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Listen

Acts 3.1-10: One afternoon about 3pm, Peter and John went to the Temple for prayer. A beggar asked them for money. He was crippled from birth. Peter said to him "I don't have any silver or gold. But I do have something to give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!" Peter then took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Immediately, his feet and ankles became firm and he could walk. He was so happy he started jumping around. He went into the Temple, praising God
Jesus, there are so many crippled people in the world. Please heal them

Listen

Luke 8.1-3: Jesus went to many towns and villages, proclaiming the Good News. The 12 apostles went with him, as did a group of women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna and several others.
These women used their own money to support Jesus and the apostles

Jesus, thank you for all the women who support the spread of the Good News in today's world

Thu July 8

I spent most of yesterday at the desk, trying to catch up on a backlog of jobs. I shudder to think what the work would have been like if Covid had not stopped drug mules from coming to HK over the past year. Present jobs largely concern overseas pre-2020  cases coming to court this year.

Genesis 45When Joseph realized his older brothers were sorry for having sold him as a slave he was overcome and started crying loudly. He told his brothers "I  am your brother Joseph whom you sold into Egypt. God sent me here to provide food for you". He hugged all his brothers and talked with them. Joseph told his brothers to bring their father and their families to Egypt
since the famine would last for five more years. Pharaoh was pleased that Joseph's brothers had come and warmly invited them to live in Egypt. The brothers returned to Canaan. They told their father that Joseph was alive. Their father Jacob was overcome with joy.

Psalm 97:
The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.

Acts 2.37-47: The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer. Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group

Luke 7.36-50: A religious leader invited Jesus for a meal. A woman who had a bad name heard that Jesus was at the leader's home. She entered the house and knelt behind Jesus, crying. Her tears fell on Jesus' feet and she wiped them away with her hair. She covered his feet with kisses, and put  ointment on them. The leader was thinking "If Jesus is a prophet, he would know what sort of woman is now touching him". So Jesus said to the leader "I came into your house and you did not follow the custom of pouring water on my feet. But this woman has poured out her tears on my feet. You gave me no welcoming kiss, but she has been covering my feet with kisses. You gave me no welcoming oil on my head, but she has anointed my feet. And I tell you that her sins must have been forgiven, or she would not have shown such great love. People who are forgiven little, show  little love"
Jesus, please forgive my sins. Help me show great love

Genesis 44: Joseph had his brothers' sacks filled with free grain, then he gave them back their money. But he again put them to the test: he got his servants to put his special chalice in Benjamin's sack. Not long after the brothers left, Joseph's servants caught up with them and asked them why had they stolen Joseph's chalice. They replied that they would never dream of doing such a thing and that if the chalice was found in anyone's sack that man would die. Each man's sack was opened, beginning with the oldest, and finally the chalice was discovered in Benjamin's sack. On returning to Joseph's home the brothers pleaded with Joseph not to punish Benjamin. Judah even offered to be Joseph's slave for life in return for Benjamin's freedom
Dear God, please help us in time of trial

My recording of this reading

Psalm 96: O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory and honor

Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

Acts 2.22-36: Peter said to the crowd "You know that Jesus of Nazareth was a man from God. You know all about the miracles he worked. This same Jesus has been raised from the dead by God. There are many witnesses to his resurrection. Jesus has been taken up to God's right hand. He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. He has poured out the Holy Spirit on us. Know for sure that Jesus whom you crucified is the Messiah and he is Lord"
Jesus, Messiah Lord, please pour your Holy Spirit into my heart

Listen

Luke 7.18-30: John the Baptist, imprisoned by King Herod, heard  the news about Jesus.  John sent two of his friends to ask Jesus "Are you the promised One?" Jesus replied "Go and tell John what you have seen today: the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is proclaimed to the poor". Jesus then spoke to the people about John: "Everyone who accepted baptism from John acknowledged God's plan. But by refusing baptism from him, the religious leaders thwarted what God had in mind for them"
Jesus, please don't let me do anything to thwart your plan for my life
