MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street, Jordan needs more volunteers, especially men!, to look after the counter/sales. Once a week job ... either from 11am to 3.30pm or 3.30pm to 8pm. More information from MercyHK Director Eddie Chan: 9849 8546.

Yesterday I said farewell to "A-Bo" who, sadly, is leaving HK this week for the UK ....like many others. It was A-Bo's March 2020 report about Covid-19 stopping homeless people from sleeping at McDonald's which led to MercyHK renting rooms at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei and setting up stalls, then a shop, in Temple Street....which in turn led to the setting up of the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street. Thank you and God bless you A-Bo!

One way that drugs enter HK!

Exodus 8: After seven days, God told Moses and Aaron to go to Pharaoh again, this time causing a plague of frogs to cover the land when Pharaoh again refused to let the Israelites go. Then God got Aaron to strike the ground and the dust turned into mosquitoes which attacked people and animals throughout Egypt. But still Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go. Next there was a plague of flies which afflicted every place except the land of  Goshen where the Israelites lived. Pharaoh then said the Israelites could go and he asked Moses to pray for the flies to stop. But once the flies stopped Pharaoh changed his mind and would not let the Israelites go.
Dear God, please help all world leaders to listen to your voice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south. Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things. Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons. Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

Acts 5.21-33: When the leaders had their big meeting later that same morning, they sent for the apostles to be brought from prison. The police went to the prison, then came back and reported to the leaders "We found that the prison was properly locked, and the guards were on duty. But when we unlocked the door, there was no one inside". Then a man arrived at the meeting with the news "At this very moment, the men you imprisoned are now in the Temple preaching to the people". The police again arrested the apostles and brought them to the meeting. When the main religious leader reminded them of his previous warning not to preach, Peter and the apostles replied "Obedience to God comes before obedience to men. God raised Jesus up to be the Savior. We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God gives to those who obey him". This made the leaders so angry that they wanted to kill the apostles
Jesus, please help me put obedience to you before all other obediences

Luke 9.28-36: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray. On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed. His clothes became brilliant as lightning. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him". When the voice had finished speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his normal appearance
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer

Exodus 7: Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh again and showed him Aaron's staff changing into a snake. When Pharaoh's magicians were able to do the same thing Aaron's staff swallowed up the magicians' staffs. But Pharaoh's heart stayed stubborn
and he wouldn't listen to Moses and Aaron. So God told Moses and Aaron to go to the river the next morning. When they saw Pharaoh there Aaron struck the river with his staff and the river and all water throughout Egypt turned into blood. But Pharaoh still would not let the Israelites go.

Dear God, please soften stubborn hearts that make life difficult for other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right, who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt, they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them. But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour, God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.
O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

Listen

Acts 5.17-21: The religious leaders were jealous of the apostles. The leaders had the apostles arrested and put in prison. But that night an angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and led them out of the prison, saying to them: "Go and stand in the Temple, and tell the people all about this new Life". The apostles went to the Temple at dawn and continued preaching
Jesus, please help more and more people know about the new Life

Luke 9.22-25: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he would suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"

Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

c.f. readings for Sunday 16

Jeremiah 21-23: Jerusalem was under siege by the Chaldaeans. The Lord told Jeremiah to tell the leaders of Jerusalem to surrender. But the leaders of Jerusalem did not obey Jeremiah's words. So the Lord got Jeremiah to say these words: "Woe to the shepherds who allow my sheep to be scattered and killed. You have not taken care of my sheep. Therefore I will raise up a leader who will be wise and just. He will be a good shepherd of my people."
Lord, please help our leaders to be good shepherds

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

Ephesians 2.11-14: You non-Jews were once without hope and without God. But now by the blood of Christ, you who had nothing in common with us Jews, have been united with us into one family. Christ is the peace between us. He has broken down the barrier which used to keep us apart
Jesus,  break down barriers of misunderstanding which divide the peoples of the world

Mark 6.30-34: The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him all they had done and taught. Then he said to them, "You must come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while"; for there were so many coming and going that the apostles had no time even to eat. So they went off in a boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But people saw them going, and many could guess where; and from every town they all hurried to the place on foot and reached it before them. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.

Reflection on the above readings:  The problems of our world have mostly been caused by poor/bad leadership. Our troubled world urgently needs leaders like Jesus the Good Shepherd

Exodus 5-6: Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said 'God says: let my people go into the desert to worship me".' Pharaoh not only refused to let them go; he also made their life more difficult by forcing them to gather their own straw for making bricks. The people complained to Moses and Aaron for having made their life more difficult. So Moses prayed to God for help
and God said he would force Pharaoh to let the people go.

Dear God, please don't let me make life difficult for other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 105: Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples. O sing to him, sing his praise. Tell all his wonderful works. Be proud of his holy name. Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Consider the Lord and his strength. Constantly seek his face. Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past, how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.
Dear God, please help me understand how you have been loving and protecting me since the beginning of my life

Acts 5.12-16: All the believers used to meet regularly in an area of the Temple. Their numbers kept on increasing. So many miracles kept happening that sick people were laid on beds on the street, in the hope that at least Peter's shadow would cover them as he walked past. People came from the towns near Jerusalem, bringing their sick, and all of the sick were healed
Jesus, let more healings take place in our day

Luke 9.18-21: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets come back to life". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Anointed One of God"

Fri July 16

187: The usual Thursday afternoon gathering for homeless people was held yesterday at the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street instead of the Gingko Restaurant in Yau Ma Tei ... because business at the restaurant is improving and the quiet time of 3-5pm is now not so quiet. We do not want to hinder the restaurant's business. So, for the time being, Thursday and Friday gatherings will both be at 187.

Yesterday's gathering was especially happy ... with a session on health being conducted by kind Salvation Army staff from the local Yau Ma Tei centre.

After the gathering I took part in an interview for the Fountain of Love and Life Group

Exodus 4: Moses said to God "What if the people won't believe you sent me?" God said "Throw your staff onto the ground."
When Moses threw his staff onto the ground, it became a snake. "Catch it by the tail" said God. When Moses caught it by the tail, it changed back into a staff. Moses said to God "I'm a poor speaker." God said "Aaron your older brother can be your mouthpiece. Now go back to Egypt. It's safe to go back now; the people who wanted to kill you are dead." Back in Egypt
Moses and Aaron gathered the Israelite leaders and told them all that God had said. The elders rejoiced that God was going to help them.

Dear God, God of Moses and Aaron, we praise you Lord

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Acts 4.32-37: The apostles continued to witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power. The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul. They willingly shared everything they had with people who were in need. Joseph was a Temple minister who had been born in Cyprus. He sold a field he owned, and gave the proceeds to the apostles. The apostles called him "Barnabas" ("Son of Encouragement")

Luke 9.10-17: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus answered "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

Exodus 3The Israelites begged God to free them from slavery in Egypt. God heard their cry and called Moses to be their leader. God appeared to Moses in a burning bush and said to him "I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I have heard the prayers of my people in Egypt. I now send you to Pharaoh to win the freedom of my people." Moses asked what was God's name. God replied "I Am who I Am".
Tell the people "I Am has sent me to you".'

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!

Apart from a mid-morning walk to post office (to dispatch just-finished High Court mitigation letter to a prisoner and her legal team) and a late afternoon walk to Rosary Church, nearly all of yesterday was spent at the desk. By late afternoon another 18 letters were ready for posting ... not mitigation letters but mostly study receipts from the Chinese University for prisoners taking courses by post.

Yesterday morning the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei (where MercyHK is renting about 30 rooms for about 40 homeless people) had a blackout .... no power for some hours. Blackouts not common in HK .... but if one affects my home's building I am in the fortunate position of having plenty of .... candles (for Mass).

Exodus 2:  One Israelite mother hid her baby boy for three months. When she could no longer hide him she put him in a basket
and placed the basket among reeds near a river bank. The basket was found by Pharaoh's daughter when she went to bathe in the river. She felt sorry for the baby and decided to keep it. The baby's sister saw all this happen and asked Pharaoh's daughter if she'd like a nurse for the baby. Pharaoh's daughter agreed, and so the baby's mother was paid by Pharaoh's daughter to be the baby's nurse. When the child was weaned, he was taken to Pharaoh's daughter who treated him like her own son. She named the baby Moses. When Moses became a man, he visited the Israelites and saw their hard life. He saw an Egyptian hit one of the Israelites so he killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand. But people found out; and so did Pharaoh who decided to kill Moses. Moses then fled to the land of Midian. The priest of Midian had 7 daughters. One day when they drew water for their father's sheep they were driven away from the well by some shepherds. Moses protected them from the shepherds and helped them get water from the well. Their father, Jethro, was grateful to Moses and invited him for a meal. Moses then stayed with Jethro who gave him his daughter Zipporah for a wife.

Dear God, please protect all new-born babies, especially baby girls.

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Acts 4.23-31: When Peter and John were released, they went to a gathering of apostles and friends and told them everything that had happened. The group then prayed "Master, it is you who made heaven and earth and sea. Please protect us from leaders who threaten us. Help us to proclaim your message with great boldness. Bless us to heal and work miracles through the name of your holy servant Jesus". As they prayed, the building rocked. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God boldly

Luke 8.40-56: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was dying. As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home, a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.  Her bleeding stopped at that moment. Jesus knew what  had happened and said to her "My daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace".
Before  Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived and said to the official "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master any more". Jesus heard these words and said to the official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok". At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James, John and the girl's parents to go with him inside.
To the mourners Jesus said "Stop crying. She is not dead, but asleep".  They laughed at him, since they knew she was dead. Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get up". Her spirit returned and she got up at once
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to heal sick people
and raise the dead
