Tues July 27

Congratulations Cheung Ka Long on winning Gold Medal for fencing!

Yesterday was the Feast of Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus. Many sick people have been healed at this famous church in her honour in Canada: St Anne de Beaupre. Which explains all the crutches here:

St-Anne-de-Beaupre.jpg (117067 bytes)

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for two cases: an (unsuccessful) application for bail) and the closing of a drug trafficking trial. In the afternoon I joined Eddie  (MercyHK Director) and Simon (MercyHK social assistant) for a meeting with Camay and Yuki (Dr Jesus Centre designers) to discuss some renovation for MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street. Already the shop has stopped selling clothing and no longer takes donations of clothing (... no space!)

187: Last night the Dr Jesus Centre was used for a monthly meeting of a wonderful NGO which has greatly supported MercyHK and helped many prisoners and ex-prisoners: St Peter's Revival Association

Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 14: Not long after the Israelites left Egypt Pharaoh again changed his mind. He decided to catch the Israelites and make them return to Egypt. The Israelites were near the edge of the Red Sea when they saw the Egyptians approaching. The Israelites cried out in fear but Moses said to them "Do not be afraid. God will do the fighting for you." God then told Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea. After he did so, a strong wind blew all night and caused the waters to part. Then the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides. The Egyptians gave chase and also went into the sea. When the Israelites had crossed to the other side Moses again stretched out his staff over the sea and this time the sea returned to its normal flow, drowning all the Egyptians. The people offered thanksgiving and praise to God.
Dear God, please rescue people in trouble, just as you rescued the Israelites when they were in trouble

My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Listen

Acts 7.55 - 8.3: Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. "I can see heaven thrown open", he said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God". At this, the religious leaders at the meeting covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul. As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed "Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against the church in Jerusalem
and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside. Paul  began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and women and sending them to prison

Jesus, thank you for the example of Stephen who, like yourself, forgave those who were killing him

Listen

Luke 10.29-37: The religious leader then asked another question: "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied "A man on a journey was attacked by robbers. They beat him, took all he had, and left him seriously injured. A priest came by and saw the man, but did not help him. A temple worker also saw him, but did not help.  But a lowly foreigner who saw him was moved with pity. The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look after the man. Which of the three was a neighbor to the injured man?" The leader replied "The one who helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"
Jesus, please don't let me ignore people who need help

Exodus 12-13: God said to Moses and Aaron "From now on, this month is to be the first month of your year. On the evening of the 14th day of this month each family must kill and eat a one year old male sheep or goat. Some of its blood must be put on your front door. You must eat it in a hurry, with a belt round your waist, sandals on your feet and a staff in your hand. This night I will go through the land of Egypt and strike every first-born Egyptian. But when I see the blood on your doors I shall PASS OVER your homes and you shall be unharmed. Each year you must remember this night. Each year you must observe this feast of the Passover. You also must consecrate all first-born to me." That night God indeed struck dead the first-born
of all the Egyptians, including the son of Pharaoh. There was great mourning in Egypt and Pharaoh finally agreed to let the Israelites go. The Israelites now numbered about 600,000 men, having been in Egypt exactly 430 years. As the people travelled, God went before them in the form of a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night.

Dear God, please help me understand the full meaning of the Passover story

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need. They conduct their affairs with integrity. Open-handed they give to the poor. Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.
Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Listen

Acts 7.1-54: The meeting of religious leaders had falsely accused Stephen of being disloyal to Moses. So Stephen gave a long speech, full of loyalty to Moses. Then he made a stinging attack on the leaders: "You stubborn people, with your pagan hearts and pagan ears. You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did. Your ancestors killed the prophets who foretold the coming of the Just One. You have gone further: you have killed the Just One himself". When the leaders heard these words, they were very angry and wanted to kill Stephen.
Jesus, Just One from heaven, please don't let me resist the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit of God, please increase your influence in my life

Listen

Luke 10.25-28: To test Jesus, a religious leader asked him in public "Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied "What does the Law say?" He replied "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and you must care for others as much as you care about yourself". "You are correct", said Jesus, "do this and life is yours"
Jesus,  help me to love you with all my heart .... and to care for others as much as I care about myself

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: We need to often ask ourselves "how much do I care about others ... in practice, not just in theory?"

c.f. readings for Sunday 17

2 Kings 4: A poor widow whose husband had been a prophet asked Elisha for help when a creditor demanded her two sons as slaves. All she had was a small pot of oil, not enough to pay her debts. Elisha told her to get many jars, and start pouring oil from the pot into the jars. As she and her sons did this, the oil did not run out. Elisha told her to sell the oil to pay off her debts. At another time Elisha  brought back to life a dead child. He also once brought about a miraculous multiplication of bread.
Dear God,  you once worked miracles by the prayers of Elisha. Please let  miracles be done in our day.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 145: I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you and
you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

 Listen

Ephesians 4.1-16: I implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall become more and more like Christ. We are parts of the Body of Christ. Christ is the head. Each part must do its bit to keep the Body healthy and growing in love
Jesus, help me understand how the Church is your Body

John 6.1-15: Near the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so many sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples. Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples "How can we feed so many people?" The disciple Andrew said "There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. But what good is that for such a huge crowd?" Jesus said "Make the people sit down". The crowd of about 20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people. He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself.
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others, just as you blessed the loaves and fish

Exodus 11: One last time God sent Moses to Pharaoh, with this message: "Tonight at midnight, God's angel will pass through Egypt. All the first-born in the land of Egypt will die, except the first-born of the Israelites.
Dear God, please bless everyone in Egypt!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 111:
I will thank the Lord with all my heart. Great are the works of the Lord, to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever. The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all times. He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
Dear Lord, please help me to love and honor you every day

Acts 6.8-15: One of the seven deacons, Stephen, was filled with grace and power. He began to do many miracles. A group of Jews tried to beat Stephen in a debate. But they could not win, because the Holy Spirit was guiding Stephen in his speech. The group then got some men to falsely accuse Stephen of being disloyal to Moses and to God. The group had Stephen arrested and brought before a meeting of the religious leaders. At the meeting, false witnesses accused Stephen of speaking against Moses and the Law
Jesus, please protect people who are accused by false witnesses

Listen

Luke 10.17-24: The 72 came back rejoicing. "Lord", they said, "even the devils submit to us when we use your name". Jesus replied "Yes, I have given you  power to tread underfoot the whole strength of the enemy. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you. Rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven. Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it".
Jesus, thank you for the gift of faith

Exodus 10: Pharaoh's advisers urged him to let the Israelites go. They said to him "How much longer is this affair going to go on? Let the Israelites go before Egypt is ruined." Pharaoh agreed to let the men go, but not the rest of the people. So God sent two more plagues on the Egyptians: locusts which devoured all the plants and trees, and then three days of total darkness,
except in the land where the Israelites lived. But even after the above nine plagues, Pharaoh still wouldn't let the Israelites go.

Dear God, stubbornness can sometimes be a good thing, but please don't let me be stubborn if that will hurt other people
My recording of this reading

Psalms 109-110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with  words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.
Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Listen

Acts 6.1-7: About this time as the number of disciples kept growing, the twelve apostles decided to give other men the job of daily food distribution. The apostles said to the whole group of believers "It is not right for us to neglect the service of the word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation, filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food  distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer and the service of the word". The whole assembly approved of this idea. They chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them with the laying on of hands. The word of the Lord continued to spread. Even a large number of priests became believers
Jesus, please bless all deacons. Fill them with the courage and wisdom of the first seven deacons

Listen

Luke 10.1-9: Jesus appointed 72 disciples to go ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them "The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest. When you go into a town, cure those in it who are sick, and say: 'The kingdom of God is very near to you' "
Jesus, please inspire more people to make the spreading of the Good News their life's work

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Jesus chose apostles and appointed disciples (Gospel). The apostles chose and appointed deacons (Acts). A structure of authority

c.f. readings for Feast of Mary Magdalene

Song of Songs 3.1-4: The bride says: On my bed, at night, I sought him whom my heart loves. I sought but did not find him. So I will rise and go through the City; in the streets and in the squares, I will seek him whom my heart loves. I sought, but did not find him. The watchmen came upon me on their rounds in the City: "Have you seen him whom my heart loves?" Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my heart loves.
Jesus, please increase my love for you, my longing for you.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 63: O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you, like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night.
Lord, our hearts are restless, until they rest in you

Recording

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
Recording

John 20.11-18: Peter and John went home. Mary Magdalene remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?". Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary" and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard.
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at funerals  today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and strength for the days ahead

Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

Apostles' "right brain" said "no use staying at empty tomb. Can't do anything. Useless to stay". Mary Magdalene's feminine intuition said "Stay. Not sure why. But it's best to stay".

Wed July 21

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for two drug trafficking cases - one involving a woman from Thailand, the other a man from the Philippines. In between cases I had a cup of tea with someone from EnrichHK which helps domestic workers from Indonesia and the Philippines

When I got back to Jordan I noticed a man in poor condition walking along the street in front of me .... no umbrella, drenched from heavy rain, walking as if influenced by drugs. When I caught up with him and offered him a meal I realised he was a woman. I took her to MercyHK's nearby 2nd hand shop for some free clothes, then Simon (MercyHK's social assistant) with his assistant Ranita spent about 6 hours looking after the woman at the Dr Jesus Centre ... giving her something to eat ... establishing her identity (she had lost her ID card) ... making contact with a social worker who knew her history (not long out of detention) and finding a friend of hers who came and took her to the place where she had been staying before hitting the street.

Exodus 9: Through Moses, God kept saying to Pharaoh "Let my people go to offer me worship." But Pharaoh kept refusing to let the people go. So God sent three more plagues: all the Egyptians' animals died, then all the Egyptians were covered with boils, then the land was hit by a fierce hailstorm. During the hailstorm, Pharaoh said the people could go. But as soon as the storm stopped, he changed his mind again.
Dear God, please help us not to ignore your voice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 108: My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise. Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today. Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations. With your help we shall be brave.
Lord, we need your help every day

Listen

Acts 5.34-42: One religious leader at the meeting, Gamaliel, asked that the apostles be removed from the room. Then he spoke to the other leaders: "Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people. If this movement of theirs is of human origin, it will die out of its own accord. But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy it. You might even find yourselves fighting against God". His advice was accepted. The apostles were warned, flogged and released. They left the meeting glad to have had the honor of suffering humiliation for the sake of Jesus. They resumed their daily preaching, in the Temple and in private homes
Jesus, thank you for times of suffering for you

Listen

Luke 9.51-58: When the time came for Jesus to finish his life on earth, he resolutely took the road to Jerusalem. As Jesus and his disciples traveled along, they met a man who said to him "I will follow you wherever you go". Jesus replied "Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but I have nowhere to lay my head"
Jesus, give me  courage to do what I should do

To go with first reading above, from Exodus: If all the Egyptians' animals died, where did the horses come from for the chase to the Sea of Reeds in a few chapters' time? An attempted answer (.. not very convincing?)
