Yesterday
was
the Feast of Saint Anne,
the grandmother of Jesus. Many sick people have been healed at this famous
church in her honour in Canada: St
Anne de Beaupre. Which
explains all the crutches here:

Yesterday
morning I was at the High Court for two cases: an (unsuccessful) application for
bail) and the closing of a drug trafficking trial. In the afternoon I joined
Eddie (MercyHK Director) and Simon (MercyHK social assistant) for a
meeting with Camay and Yuki (Dr Jesus Centre designers) to discuss some
renovation for MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street. Already the shop
has stopped selling clothing and no longer takes donations of clothing (... no
space!)
187: Last night the Dr Jesus Centre was used for a monthly meeting of a wonderful NGO which has greatly supported MercyHK and helped many prisoners and ex-prisoners: St Peter's Revival Association

Psalm
113: Praise, O friends of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed
both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting
praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God,
above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly,
to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home
and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from

Acts
7.55 - 8.3:
Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked
up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. "I can see heaven thrown open", he
said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God". At this, the religious leaders at the meeting
covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and
stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first
stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul. As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul
entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against
the church in Jerusalem
and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside. Paul began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and
women and sending them to prison
Jesus, thank you for the example of Stephen
who, like yourself, forgave those who were killing him

Luke
10.29-37:
The religious leader then asked another
question: "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied "A man on a journey was
attacked by robbers. They beat him, took all he had, and left him
seriously injured. A priest came by and saw the man, but did not help
him. A temple worker also saw him, but did not help. But
a lowly foreigner
who saw him was moved with pity. The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used
his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look
after the man. Which of the three was a neighbor to the
injured man?" The leader replied "The one who
helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"
Jesus, please don't let me ignore people who
need help

Acts
7.1-54: The meeting of religious leaders had falsely
accused Stephen of being disloyal to Moses. So Stephen gave a long speech, full of loyalty
to Moses. Then he made a stinging attack on the leaders: "You
stubborn people, with your pagan hearts and pagan ears. You are always
resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did. Your ancestors killed the prophets who
foretold the coming of the Just One. You have gone further: you
have killed the Just One himself". When the leaders heard these words, they were
very angry and wanted to kill Stephen.
Jesus, Just One from heaven, please don't let
me resist the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit of God, please increase your
influence in my life

10.25-28: To test Jesus, a religious leader asked him
in public "Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied "What does the Law
say?" He replied "You must love the Lord your

Kings 4: A poor
widow whose husband had been a prophet asked Elisha for help when a creditor
demanded her two sons as slaves. All she had was a small pot of oil, not enough
to pay her debts. Elisha told her to get many jars, and start
pouring oil from the pot into the jars. As she and her sons did this, the
oil did not run out. Elisha told her to sell the oil to pay off her
debts. At another time Elisha brought back to life a dead child. He also
once brought about a miraculous multiplication of bread.
Dear God, you once worked miracles by the prayers of Elisha. Please let
miracles be done in our day.

Psalm
145: I will give you glory, O God
my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all
praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall
speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow
to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all
his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the
world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his
deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The
eyes of all creatures look to you and you
give them their food each day. The
Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the
whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

John
6.1-15: Near the Sea of
Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so many
sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples. Seeing
the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples "How can we feed so
many people?" The disciple Andrew
said "There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. But what good is
that for such a huge crowd?" Jesus said "Make the people sit
down". The crowd of about 20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the
loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people. He did the same with
the fish. Everyone ate as much as they
wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's
great prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him king, slipped
away and went up the hill by himself.
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others, just as you
blessed the loaves and fish

They said to him "How much longer is this affair going to go on?
Let the Israelites go before Egypt

Pharaoh agreed to let the men go, but not the rest of the people.
So God sent two more plagues on the Egyptians:
locusts which devoured all the plants and trees,
and then three days of total darkness,
except in the land where the Israelites lived.
But even after the above nine plagues,

6.1-7:
About this time as the number of disciples
kept growing, the twelve apostles decided to give other men the job of
daily food distribution. The apostles said to the whole group of
believers "It is not right for us to neglect the service of the
word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation, filled
with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food
distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer
and the service of the word". The whole assembly approved of this idea.
They
chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them

his harvest. When you go into a town, cure those in it who
are sick, and say: 'The kingdom of God is very near to you' "

Song of Songs 3.1-4: The

my bed, at night, I sought him
whom my heart loves. I sought but did not find him. So I will rise and
go through the City; in the streets and in the squares, I will seek him whom
my heart loves. I sought, but did not find him. The watchmen came upon me on

John 20.11-18: Peter
and John went home. Mary
Magdalene remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the
tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though
she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?".
Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken
him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary"
and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my
Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard.
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at
funerals today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and
strength for the days ahead

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for two drug
trafficking cases - one involving a woman from Thailand, the other a man from
the Philippines. In between cases I had a cup of tea with someone from EnrichHK
which helps domestic workers from Indonesia and the Philippines
When I got back to Jordan I noticed a man in poor condition walking along the street in front of me .... no umbrella, drenched from heavy rain, walking as if influenced by drugs. When I caught up with him and offered him a meal I realised he was a woman. I took her to MercyHK's nearby 2nd hand shop for some free clothes, then Simon (MercyHK's social assistant) with his assistant Ranita spent about 6 hours looking after the woman at the Dr Jesus Centre ... giving her something to eat ... establishing her identity (she had lost her ID card) ... making contact with a social worker who knew her history (not long out of detention) and finding a friend of hers who came and took her to the place where she had been staying before hitting the street.

But Pharaoh kept refusing to let the people go.
So God sent three more plagues:

Acts
5.34-42: One religious leader at the meeting,
Gamaliel,
asked that the apostles be removed from the room. Then he spoke to the
other leaders: "Men of Israel, be careful how you deal
with these people. If this movement of theirs is of human origin, it will
die out of its own accord. But if it comes from God, you will not be able
to destroy it. You might even find yourselves fighting against God".
His advice was accepted. The apostles were
warned, flogged and released. They left the meeting glad to have had the
honor of suffering humiliation for the sake of Jesus. They resumed their
daily preaching, in the Temple and in private homes
