Yesterday when I walked to East Tsim Sha Tsui to enrol some prisoners for courses at the HKMA I was sad to see so many shops have shut down for lack of business at this time of Covid. In fact even locally in Jordan near my home, more and more businesses are closing down. Makes me continue to give thanks for the blessings of MercyHK's little second hand shop in Temple Street which continues to do well despite the present economic situation. In fact of course, second hand shops are useful in hard times when people can't afford to buy new items. May the government be moved to do more for people who have lost their businesses/jobs.

Exodus 20: The Ten Commandments given by God to Moses:

1: I am the Lord your God. Do not worship anyone or anything else.

2: Use my name with respect. Do not insult my name.

3: Make the Sabbath Day a holy day each week.

4: Honor your father and your mother.

 5: Do not kill.

 6: Do not commit adultery.

 7: Do not steal.

 8: Do not tell lies.

9: Do not lust after someone else's wife.

10: Do not desire what belongs to someone else.

Dear God, please help us to put these commandments into practice
My recording of this reading

Psalm 120-121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever. Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Acts 9.32-35: Peter visited churches in many areas. When he went to Lydda, he saw a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bed-ridden for 8 years. Peter said to him "Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you. Get up and fold up your sleeping mat". Aeneas got up immediately. The people of that area who saw him, were converted to the Lord
Jesus, let there be more miracles of healing, so that more people will believe in you

Luke 12.15-21: Jesus told the people this story: There was a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself "What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my crops". Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him "Fool! This very night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who will get them?" So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with what I have, and not to be greedy

Mon Aug

Last night I received a call from a 50+ year old Thailand widowed mother in great distress in Bangkok. Having spent more than 8 years in prison in HK after being recruited by a Nigerian in Bangkok to bring drugs to HK, she returned to Thailand a few weeks ago. She had been told by the Thai Consulate in HK how much she would need for quarantine in Bangkok ... and I gave her that amount and a bit extra (... she had no money of her own when she left HK). But when she got to Bangkok the authorities increased the amount ... forcing her to beg a friend to go surety for her to let her borrow money from the government (... to be paid back in two months). She also could not travel to her home town as that would require another expensive quarantine period in her home town, so for the past two days she has been staying at the friend's home, but friend's mother is demanding she leave immediately. Today she will try to get new ID in Bangkok, then send me her details, and I will try to send something to her to help her pay her govt debt and temporarily rent a room until she can return to her home town ... where her 17 year old daughter and 18 year old autistic son await her.

The above call was followed about 10 minutes later by another one, from a lady in Bangladesh. She used to be a domestic helper in HK but when she contracted blood cancer two years ago she returned to Bangladesh ...where her family have not been interested in helping her. I have helped her HK employer (a most kind lady) to send money to Bangladesh to pay for some type of chemotherapy. But that treatment has finished and the doctors have told her "to prepare". She has been in great agony. I have helped the HK employer to send more money to pay for medicine (morphine?) to ease her pain .... but in the call last night she said the medicine helps for only a few hours, then there is extreme pain for another long period until she is allowed a further dose of medicine. She is praying to Dr Jesus for help. I invite dear readers to pray for her please.

Above donations - to Thailand and Bangladesh - were not from MercyHK (whose money may be used only inside HK) but from my "Prison and Other" fund - as explained here (scroll down to "prison work..")

How small are our problems when compared with those of the two women above!

Exodus 19: The Israelites kept traveling and came to Mount Sinai (Mount Horeb). Through Moses, God told the people to prepare themselves for a special revelation from Heaven. Three days later a thick cloud covered the mountain accompanied by lightning and thunder and a trumpet blast which grew louder and louder. God then called Moses to the top of the mountain
and gave him "The Ten Commandments".

Dear God, please make us willing to hear your voice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Acts 9.20-31After a few days, Paul began preaching in the prayer halls that Jesus is the Son of God. People were amazed at Paul's conversion. As time passed, the Jews planned to kill Paul. Paul heard of this and decided to leave the city. The Jews kept watch at the city gates to stop him leaving. Then one night he was able to escape: some disciples lowered him in a basket from the city wall. He went to Jerusalem and began preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. Soon another plot was made to kill him. Therefore the disciples sent him to Tarsus. After this the churches throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria were left in peace. They steadily grew, strengthened by the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, please strengthen me, as you strengthened Paul and the first believers

Luke 11.37-54: Jesus said to the religious leaders "You worry so much about cleaning dirty dishes,  but don't care about having a dirty heart full of extortion and wickedness. At meetings and in the market, you like being treated as people of importance. But in fact you are like unmarked tombs that people walk on without knowing it. You expect ordinary people to observe unreasonable laws, while you excuse yourselves from such laws. You don't care about obtaining real wisdom, and you prevent others from obtaining wisdom". The leaders were stung by Jesus' words, and they intensified their efforts to trap him in his speech
Jesus, help religious leaders be sincere people

c.f. readings for Sunday 18
Exodus 16:
As the Israelites travelled through the desert they began to complain about not having enough food. So God rained down bread, manna, from heaven in the form of a coating of dew which appeared on the ground each morning, as well as flocks of quails which came every evening. For forty years the Israelites ate manna and quails, bread and birds.
Dear God, thank you for the food we have each day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them.
He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader.
God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.

Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

 Listen

Ephesians 4.22-32: You must give up your old way of life. You must put aside your old self and its delusions. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution, so that you can follow a way of life based on goodness and truth. From now on, no more lies. Delete anger from your mind at the end of each day. Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing. Try to find a decent job. Guard against foul talk. Let your conversation encourage people, not drag them down. Avoid grudges. Don't lose your temper. Don't raise your voice to anyone. Don't call people names. Be friends with one another, and kind, forgiving one another as readily as God forgives us in Christ
Jesus, help me put these words into practice

 Listen

John 6.26-29: Jesus said to the people "You have come looking for me because you had so much bread to eat. Do not give so much concern to physical food. Be more concerned about the spiritual food that lasts forever. This is the  food I am offering you"
Jesus, please give us the food that lasts forever

Reflection on the above readings:  Our bodies need food each day .... several times each day. So do our hearts and minds need spiritual food each day .... several times each day. I hope many readers will also use these readings each day .... check them on the way to work/school ....check them again around lunchtime .....and again last thing at night.

Exodus 18: Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, heard about all that God had done for Moses and the Israelites, so he visited Moses in the desert. Jethro saw that Moses was struggling to do so much administration by himself. Jethro suggested that Moses appoint men to help him: leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Moses accepted this advice and appointed judges as Jethro suggested. These judges handled all small issues and referred only difficult cases to Moses.
Dear God, please make us willing to share responsibilities with other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Listen

Acts 9.1-19: Paul kept up his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied "I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to do". Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul  is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias baptized him
Jesus, please help me understand how unkindness to others is unkindness to you

Listen

Luke 11.27-32: While Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out "Blessed the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you". Jesus replied "Even more blessed are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice!" Jesus also said "On Judgement day, the Queen of the South will rise up with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from a distant country to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here"
Jesus, greater than Solomon, please help me put your teaching into practice

Reflection on the above readings: In the same way that Jesus chose Paul, we can pray that he will also choose some modern day foes of Christianity to become "apostles"!

Fri July 30

Two jury decisions from the High Court yesterday around midday: The first made me really happy - an elderly Philippino acquitted 7-0 on a charge of drug trafficking. The second made me very sad - a young Indonesian woman convicted 7-0 on a charge of drug trafficking. I will try to help the woman prepare for an appeal.

Like so many people in HK and Australia and elsewhere, I am these days very distracted by the Olympics! Nothing like winning a few medals to improve our interest! Disclaimer: when Siobhan Haughey is swimming, I am definitely pro-HK! Two days ago I had lunch with a kind reader whose daughter was in the same parish catechism class as Siobhan! Interesting how Haughey and her rivalTitmus both attended Catholic schools.

Exodus 17: In one place where there was no water the people grumbled against Moses: "Give us water to drink or else we will die." Moses asked God for help and God told Moses to strike a large rock with his staff. When Moses did this, water flowed from the rock. In another place the Israelites were attacked by the Amalekites. Moses prayed while Joshua led the people in battle. As long as Moses kept his arms raised up in prayer, the Israelites were winning. But when Moses let his arms down,
the Amalekites started winning. So Aaron and Hur got Moses to sit on a rock and they supported his hands until sunset.
Joshua and the people then won the battle.

When Peter and John prayed over them with the laying on of hands, the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Luke 10.38-42 (for Feast of St Martha, Mary & Lazarus): Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me." But the Lord answered: "Martha, Martha," he said "you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her."
 Recording

John 11.1-44 (for Feast of St Martha, Mary & Lazarus)Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha lived in the village of Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent a message to Jesus "Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time Jesus and his disciples arrived in Bethany, Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha said to Jesus "If you had been here, my brother would not have died". Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha "Where have you put him?"  Jesus cried as he went to the tomb. The tomb was a cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the stone away". Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus said "Unwrap him and let him go free".
Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Please give eternal life to my friend (....name...) who died recently

Reflection on the above readings:

So many of us, like Martha, worry and fret about so many non-essentials. If friendship with Jesus can be stronger in our lives, then non-essential worries and frets will decrease.

Exodus 15: The Israelites used this prayer to thank and praise God: "The Lord has covered himself in glory, horse and rider he has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song, he is my salvation. This is my God, I praise him. The Lord is his name. Lord, when you blew over the waters, they piled high on two sides. Lord, only you are God, there is no other. Lord, you are our king for ever."

Psalms 114-115: When Israel came out of Egypt, Jacob's descendents from an alien people, Judah became the Lord's temple,
Israel became his kingdom. Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. To you may the Lord grant increase, to you and all your children. May you be blessed by the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth

Thank you, Lord, for all your blessings

Listen

Acts 8.4-8: The believers who escaped from Jerusalem went from place to place spreading the Good News. One of these believers was Philip. He preached about Jesus in a Samaritan town. The Samaritans welcomed Philip's message because of the miracles he worked. Unclean spirits came out of many possessed people, and a number of handicapped people were cured. Such miracles caused great rejoicing in that town
Jesus, let there be more miracles in our day, especially the healing of handicapped people

Luke 11.1-4: Once when Jesus had finished praying in private, one of his disciples asked him "Lord, teach us to pray". Jesus replied "Pray like this: Father, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Thank you for enough food for today.
Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial
"

Jesus, please teach me how to pray

Reflection on the above readings: The more problems our world has, the more urgent is the need for prayer

Tues July 27

Congratulations Cheung Ka Long on winning Gold Medal for fencing!

Yesterday was the Feast of Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus. Many sick people have been healed at this famous church in her honour in Canada: St Anne de Beaupre. Which explains all the crutches here:

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for two cases: an (unsuccessful) application for bail) and the closing of a drug trafficking trial. In the afternoon I joined Eddie  (MercyHK Director) and Simon (MercyHK social assistant) for a meeting with Camay and Yuki (Dr Jesus Centre designers) to discuss some renovation for MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street. Already the shop has stopped selling clothing and no longer takes donations of clothing (... no space!)

187: Last night the Dr Jesus Centre was used for a monthly meeting of a wonderful NGO which has greatly supported MercyHK and helped many prisoners and ex-prisoners: St Peter's Revival Association

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 14: Not long after the Israelites left Egypt Pharaoh again changed his mind. He decided to catch the Israelites and make them return to Egypt. The Israelites were near the edge of the Red Sea when they saw the Egyptians approaching. The Israelites cried out in fear but Moses said to them "Do not be afraid. God will do the fighting for you." God then told Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea. After he did so, a strong wind blew all night and caused the waters to part. Then the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides. The Egyptians gave chase and also went into the sea. When the Israelites had crossed to the other side Moses again stretched out his staff over the sea and this time the sea returned to its normal flow, drowning all the Egyptians. The people offered thanksgiving and praise to God.
Dear God, please rescue people in trouble, just as you rescued the Israelites when they were in trouble

My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Listen

Acts 7.55 - 8.3: Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. "I can see heaven thrown open", he said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God". At this, the religious leaders at the meeting covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul. As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed "Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against the church in Jerusalem
and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside. Paul  began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and women and sending them to prison

Jesus, thank you for the example of Stephen who, like yourself, forgave those who were killing him

Listen

Luke 10.29-37: The religious leader then asked another question: "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied "A man on a journey was attacked by robbers. They beat him, took all he had, and left him seriously injured. A priest came by and saw the man, but did not help him. A temple worker also saw him, but did not help.  But a lowly foreigner who saw him was moved with pity. The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look after the man. Which of the three was a neighbor to the injured man?" The leader replied "The one who helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"
Jesus, please don't let me ignore people who need help

Reflection on the above readings: Pope Francis gives a very detailed commentary on today's Gospel in nos. 63-86 here

------------------------------

The phrase "barking up the wrong tree" means "you are mistaken" ... like a barking dog looking for a cat up the wrong tree. But interesting ... the outer "skin" of a tree is called "bark"!    ("Barking up the wrong bark"?!)
