A-Ching is a local drug addict, aged around 50, who sits each day in the covered walkway leading to Austin MTR station .... seeking money to support his habit. Yesterday I bought him a meal and got his phone number to give to MercyHK's new assistant responsible for caring for drug addicts. A-Ching got me to phone his (A-Ching's) number to make sure I had it right  ... and we both laughed when we heard the ring tone ..."Jingle Bells" .... because some years ago during several Christmas parties for poor people A-Ching was our Santa Claus!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 25: God said to Moses: "Build me a sacred tent so that I may live among the people. Let everyone follow the promptings of their heart in making contributions for the building of the temple. Make a sacred chest (ark) to hold the stone tablets on which are the Ten Commandments, Aaron's rod and some manna. Also make a table for the bread of offering, and a golden lamp-stand."
Dear God, thank you for churches and other special places for prayer

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap
. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.

Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Listen

Acts 13.1-3: In the church at Antioch in Syria, the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, Manaen and Paul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said "I want Barnabas and Paul set apart for the work to which I have called them". After fasting and prayer, the leaders prayed for Barnabas and Paul with the laying on of hands and sent them off on a missionary journey
Holy Spirit, help me be attentive to your guidance

Listen

Luke 14.1-6: One Sabbath day Jesus went for a meal to the house of a religious leader. In the house Jesus saw a man with dropsy. Jesus asked the leaders present there "Is it against the Law to cure a man on the Sabbath?" But they remained silent.
Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away. Then Jesus said to the leaders "Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, will not pull him out on a Sabbath day?" Again  the leaders remained silent.

Jesus, help me understand that "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath"

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Luke, being a doctor, uses a specific medical term, "dropsy", which today is known as edema (swelling of various parts of the body)

A-Ching, drug addict in story at top of menu, is quite distinctive. As he sits on his piece of cardboard on the ground, he has a small table in front him on which is placed a large Bible which he spends the day reading!

On Cheung Chau Island all of the guests at the Mercy Centre for Men and the Mercy Centre for Women are former prison inmates ... or people out on bail. Each centre at the moment has 3 bail cases. Over recent years I have been involved in about 20 bail cases (including a group who once stayed at a guest house in Temple Street, Jordan!). Thank you, Jesus, not one bail person has ever absconded! One of the big advantages of getting bail is that people are able to meet more easily and regularly with their legal teams to prepare their trials

187: Everyone - especially people fighting cancer - welcome to come to Dr Jesus Centre 3pm - 4pm each Saturday for prayer for healing, at M/F, 187 Temple Street, Jordan (not far from Jordan MTR Exit A) ... next to MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 24: God invited Moses, Aaron, Nadab and 70 other men to see him face to face. They saw God face to face and ate and drank in his presence. Under God's feet the ground was like a pure blue jewel. God then invited Moses to go up the mountain. A cloud covered the mountain and for 6 days the glory of the Lord settled on the mountain. On the seventh day God spoke with Moses inside the cloud. Moses stayed on the mountain for about 40 days.
Dear God, thank you for times of prayer

My recording of this reading

Psalm 125: Those who put their trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, that cannot be shaken. Jerusalem, the mountains surround her, so the Lord surrounds his people, now and forever
Lord, please help us be more aware of your protecting presence

Listen

Acts 12.20-23: Wearing his robes of state and sitting on a throne, King Herod made a speech to the leaders of Tyre and Sidon. People acclaimed him saying "It is a god speaking, not a man!" At that moment, the angel of the Lord struck him down, because he had not given the glory to God. He was eaten away with worms and died.
Jesus, please help us remember that all our talents are a gift from you. "Not to us, Lord, but to your name be the glory"

Listen

Luke 13.18-25: Jesus said to the people "The kingdom of God is like a tiny seed planted in the ground. It grows and becomes a big tree, and the birds live in its branches. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast mixed with flour until the flour is leavened all through. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophets who are sent to you. How often have I longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you refused"
Jesus, may your kingdom grow in the hearts of more and more people

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: "Hen" in today's Gospel is why some spiritual writers speak the maternal side of Jesus/God - like this one

Many thanks to St Margaret's Parish, Happy Valley, for inviting me to gathering yesterday focussed on service to the poor. And God bless St Margaret's for its wonderful help over the years to the Sunday Pizza Party gathering for the poor at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei (currently in Covid recession). c.f. readings for Sunday 19:

1 Kings 19.4-8: Elijah went into the wilderness, a day's journey, and sitting under a furze bush wished he were dead. "O Lord," he said "I have had enough. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." Then he lay down and went to sleep. But an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." He looked round, and there at his head was a scone baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. But the angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get up and eat, or the journey will be too long for you." So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he walked for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.

Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

 Listen

Ephesians 4.22-32: You must give up your old way of life. You must put aside your old self and its delusions. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution, so that you can follow a way of life based on goodness and truth. From now on, no more lies. Delete anger from your mind at the end of each day. Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing. Try to find a decent job. Guard against foul talk. Let your conversation encourage people, not drag them down. Avoid grudges. Don't lose your temper.
Don't raise your voice to anyone. Don't call people names. Be friends with one another, and kind, forgiving one another as readily as God forgives us in Christ

Jesus, help me put these words into practice

 Listen

John 6.42-51: The people criticized  Jesus saying "We know his father and mother. How can he say he has come down from heaven?" Jesus replied "I am the bread of life. If you eat this bread which has come down from heaven, you will live forever. I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world".
Jesus, living bread come down from heaven, please help me understand how you give your flesh for the life of the world

Sat Aug 7

Many good things happened yesterday to give me a gold medal feeling: MercyHK's new assistant dedicated to serving drug addicts, Patrick, continued to build up his special group; social work assistant Simon and I had our two regular Friday meetings at the Dr Jesus Centre (lunch for women who work on the street, and a gathering for about 15 homeless people); and the latest edition of the Simple Bible Old Testament in Chinese arrived from the printer and is now stored in the prayer room of the Dr Jesus Centre (in the seats so wisely designed by Camay and Yuki to be storage areas!). Thank you Jesus for all the blessings of yesterday!

Exodus 23: Moses told the people: "Don't be unfair to anyone, friend or foe. Work for six days, then rest on the seventh day.
Work your land for six years, then let the land rest and recover in the seventh year. Three times a year you must celebrate special feasts: the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Harvest, the Feast of Ingathering. On these three feasts all men must present themselves before the Lord." God's promise: "I will send an angel before you to protect you and bring you to the land I have prepared for you. Eventually you will possess this special land and take it over from the peoples who live there now."
Dear God, please help everyone love you

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him
Jesus, please help Christians who are in prison for their faith

Luke 13.10-17: One Sabbath day Jesus was teaching in a prayer hall. There was a woman there who for 18 years had been possessed by a spirit which left her bent over and unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said "Woman, you are rid of your infirmity" and he laid his hands on her. At once she was healed and could stand up straight, and she glorified God
Jesus, please heal the people I know who are bent over and can't stand up straight
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The woman in the Gospel did not ask Jesus for help. It was Jesus, with his compassionate heart, who took the initiative .... just as we must sometimes do ... not wait for people to ask for help but reach out to people in need

When the Old Testament books were due to be delivered yesterday to a location near the Dr Jesus Centre, I asked the staff of our nearby MercyHK shop to prepare our two small (inadequate) trolleys to move the 10 very large and very heavy cartons each carrying 100 books. But Someone anticipated our need: when we went to the location, a nearby market stall holder "just happened" to have left a large, long trolley right next to the location ... and kindly let us use it.

c.f. readings for Feast of the Transfiguration

Daniel 7: Once when Daniel was asleep, he had a vision of heaven: "Thrones were put in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, his hair as pure as wool. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. Then coming on the clouds of heaven was one like a son of man. On him was conferred  glory and kingship, and people of all nations became his servants. His kingship is eternal. His empire will never be destroyed."
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man" whose kingship is eternal

My recording of this reading

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship  the Creator. Light shines forth for good people. and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

Recording

2 Peter 1.12-18: As long as I am in this passing world, my duty is to keep on reminding you of the truths we hold dear. Writing this letter is one way of making sure that after my departure you will still have a way of recalling the truths we hold dear. These truths are not cleverly invented myths. I myself saw the majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was honored and glorified by God the Father,  when the Sublime Glory himself spoke to him and said "This is my Son, the Beloved. He enjoys my favor". I heard this myself, spoken from heaven, when I was with Jesus on the holy mountain.
Jesus, Beloved Son, may more and more people accept the truth of your Good News

 Recording

Matthew 17.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. The  prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer

Exodus 22Laws announced by Moses: "If a man seduces a virgin, he must marry her. A sorceress must be put to death.
Anyone who has intercourse with an animal must die. Do not discriminate against foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. Do not be harsh to widows and orphans. Do not demand interest if you make a loan to a poor person.
Always remember you are a people consecrated to God."

Psalm 123:
To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich,
with the proud man's disdain

Acts 11.19-26:
Some believers went to Antioch in Syria where they preached the Good News of the Lord Jesus to non-Jewish people. Many non-Jewish people became believers. Barnabas, a good man filled with the Holy Spirit, was sent to Antioch in Syria to encourage the new believers to remain faithful to the Lord. Barnabas brought Paul from Tarsus to Antioch. They stayed in Antioch one year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the believers were first called "Christians"

From yesterday MercyHK has a new assistant - Patrick Leung - whose responsibility is ministering to drug addicts in the Jordan/Yau Ma Tei area. Welcome Patrick and God bless you as you begin a most difficult job!

Yesterday morning I went to the High Court for a bail application by a woman from Indonesia. As I was about to enter the court room, I saw a local man I know so well ... he used to work in Temple Street just near my home. I was surprised to learn that his friend, a woman from Thailand, was also due to apply for bail ... in the same court before the same judge. In fact 4 applications altogether over 90 minutes. So, on a spare copy of the letter which I had written for the Indonesian woman, I crossed out the Indonesian woman's name and put in the Thai woman's name. And both applications were successful! Both women now staying at the Mercy Centre for Women on Cheung Chau Island. God bless the kind judge!!!

Exodus 21: Laws announced by Moses: "When you buy an Israelite slave, you may keep him for only six years. In the seventh year he is free to leave or stay. Put to death anyone who kills someone in cold blood, anyone who curses or strikes his father or mother. Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.

Acts 10.1-48: Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in the town of Caesarea. He and his household prayed, loved God, and helped the local people. One morning Cornelius had a vision that Peter would visit him. In another town, Peter was instructed by the Lord to visit Cornelius. Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and his household. While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers  who had accompanied Peter were astonished that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people
Holy Spirit, please come down on all peoples everywhere!

Luke 12.22-34: Jesus said to his disciples "Do not worry about food and clothing. As regards food, think of the birds. They don't sow or reap, and they have no homes to store things. Yet God feeds them. As regards clothing, think how the flowers grow with a beauty greater than that of Solomon's clothes. God will look after you more than he looks after the flowers. So, don't set your hearts on food and clothing. Don't go in for worry. Just set your hearts on God's kingdom, then food and clothing will not be a problem. Where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be too
Jesus, please help me to put your friendship as number one in my life
