Yesterday afternoon at the Indonesian Consulate I attended a most encouraging meeting comprising six consulate staff and four members of my NGO Voice for Prisoners ...discussing how we could work together to help stop Indonesian domestic helpers and asylum seekers in HK from being tricked/recruited for collecting drug parcels. And .. Jesus .. please bless Indonesia and all overseas Indonesians today for National Day (1945)!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 33: The Israelites continued their journey through the desert. Wherever the people camped, Moses would put the Sacred Tent outside, some distance from the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, the pillar of cloud came down on the Tent and God spoke with Moses face to face, just like friends speak to each other. The Israelites would go out to the Tent
for Moses to consult God for them.

Dear God, thank you for your friendship

My recording of this reading

Psalm 135: Praise the name of the Lord, praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people who worship idols to know and love you

Listen

Acts
15.36-40: Some time after this, Paul said to Barnabas "Let's revisit the towns where we preached the word of the Lord". Barnabas suggested taking John Mark with them, but Paul opposed this, since John Mark had deserted them on the previous trip when the situation became dangerous. After a violent argument, Paul and Barnabas split up. Barnabas went with John Mark to Cyprus. Silas joined Paul for his next journey
Jesus, at your Last Supper  you prayed  for the unity of your followers.  Help us avoid arguments

Listen

Luke 18.1-7: Jesus told his disciples a story about the need to pray continually and never lose heart: There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice against someone who had wronged her. For a long time the judge refused to help her, but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or she will pester me to death". Even more so God will  see that justice is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he delays to help them
Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray each day

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Barnabas believed in giving people "another chance" .... he gave Paul another chance when others were still afraid of Paul. But Paul did not share this outlook and would not give John Mark "another chance" .... although Paul softened and eventually spoke kindly of John Mark (Colossians 4.10)

Two days ago at my 8.30am Sunday Mass at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei, just before Communion, a homeless man for whom MercyHK is providing accommodation, came into the hall where Mass is held .... walked to the front of the altar and gave me a big wave! He was ushered to a seat, but re-appeared in line for Communion and had to be re-ushered! At the end of Mass, with his ok, I introduced him and the congregation gave him a welcome round of applause!

Exodus 32: Moses stayed on the mountain about 40 days. During this time the people told Aaron to make them a god out of gold. Aaron made a golden calf and the people worshipped it. On the mountain, God said to Moses "Go down now, because the people have been unfaithful to me. I will punish them, but of you I will make a great nation." Moses pleaded with God not to punish the people. When Moses, carrying the two tablets, came down the mountain he saw the people partying before the golden calf. He threw down the tablets and broke them. He smashed the golden calf. The men of the tribe of Levi were then commissioned to go through the camp and kill many men. About 3,000 men were killed.
Dear God, please don't let us ever worship anyone or anything except you

Psalm 134: O come, bless the Lord, all you who serve the Lord, who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Lift up your hands to heaven and bless the Lord through the night. May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who made both heaven and earth.
Lord, please protect my family tonight and every night

Listen

Acts 15.1-29: Some Jewish Christians came to Syrian Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians should be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea, and decided to go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there. During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone how the Holy Spirit had been poured out on non-circumcised people. James  spoke of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord. James then issued a teaching for non-Jewish believers: "All we ask you to do is to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood from the meat of strangled animals, from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right"
Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable demands on other people

Listen

Luke 17.11-19: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village where 10 lepers came to meet him. They stood at a distance and called out "Jesus, Master, take pity on us!" Jesus said to them "Go and show yourselves to the priests". As they went away, their leprosy disappeared. Seeing that he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. This made Jesus say "Were not all 10 healed? Where are the 9 others?"
Jesus, please don't let me forget to say "thank you" when someone helps me

The Assumption of Mary to Heaven

My August 15 Reflection: In our spiritual DNA, there's something about Mary that moves our hearts on August 15. May this reflection be an encouragement to people who might be influenced to doubt the beautiful importance of Mary in God's plan and in our lives

 c.f. readings for Assumption

Revelation 12: The sanctuary of God in heaven opened and the ark of the covenant could be seen inside it. Then came flashes of lightning, peals of thunder and an earthquake, and violent hail. Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, and with twelve stars on her head for a crown
My recording of this reading

Mary of Guadalupe
Many people see in this picture the Woman of today's first reading: dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with stars

Psalm 44: The daughters of kings are among your loved ones. On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir. Listen, O daughter, give ear to my words: forget your own people and your father's house. So will the king desire your beauty: He is your lord, pay homage to him. They are escorted amid gladness and joy; they pass within the palace of the king

1 Corinthians 15: Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. Death came through one man and in the same way the resurrection of the dead has come through one man. Just as all people die in Adam, so all people will be brought to life in Christ; but all of them in their proper order: Christ as the first-fruits and then, after the coming of Christ, those who belong to him. After that will come the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, having done away with every sovereignty, authority and power. For he must be king until he has put all his enemies under his feet and the last of the enemies to be destroyed is death, for everything is to be put under his feet.

Luke 1: Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, "Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled." And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me"
Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

The spirituality of Mary invites us to the values of Catholic Social Teaching: concern for the poor, solidarity with all people, a preference for the ways of nonviolence rather than military might, forgiveness and reconciliation rather than domination and manipulation.

Exodus 31: God said to Moses: "The Israelites must make the Sabbath a holy day each week, because the Sabbath is a sign between you and me. Do not do any ordinary work on the Sabbath. Work for six days, then rest on the Sabbath. Consecrate the Sabbath to me." God's words were inscribed on two stone tablets.
Dear God, please help us to make Sunday a holy day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 133: How good and how pleasant it is when people live in unity. It is like precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard. It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the heights of Zion. For there the Lord gives his blessing, life for ever.
Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity.

Acts 14.19-27: Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium. They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian Antioch via Lystra and Iconium.  In each place they encouraged the believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be church leaders. Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish people
Jesus, please help me persevere in the faith, like Paul and Barnabas

Luke 16.19-26: Jesus told this story to the people: There was a rich man who used to dress in expensive clothes and feast magnificently every day. At his gate there was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to eat scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hell, the rich man looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus at his side. So the rich man cried out "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames". "My son", replied Abraham, "remember that during your life, good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here, while you are in agony"
Jesus, please help me understand how I should do more to help poor people

Fri Aug 13

A new experience for me yesterday morning: I gave a testimony at the Torture Claims Appeal Board in North Point ... on behalf of an African prisoner who is applying for refugee status in HK. But as I said to the adjudicator, while I feel the prisoner faces some danger if they return to HK, they face greater danger staying in HK: no job, the danger of being recruited for drug trafficking etc.

In the afternoon I attended the usual gathering for homeless people at the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street ... where a local evangelist gave a most interesting sharing about his life in Yau Ma Tei

Exodus 30: God said to Moses: "Every morning offer one lamb as a sacrifice for the people. Every evening offer another lamb as a sacrifice for the people. I will meet the people of Israel in the place consecrated to my glory. I will remain with the people of Israel and be their God. They will know that it is I who brought them out of Egypt.
Dear God, you created us, we are your people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 130:
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. If you, O Lord, should record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness. For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for the daybreak. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem from all its  iniquity.
Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Listen

Acts 14.8-18: In Lycaonia, there was a man who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth. As he listened to Paul preaching, Paul noticed him and saw that he had the faith to be cured. Paul said in a loud voice "Get to your feet! Stand up!" The crippled man jumped up and began to walk. The local people thought that Paul and Barnabas must be gods, so Paul said to them "We are only human beings like you. We have come with Good News to help you turn from empty idols to the living God who made heaven and earth. It is he who sends you rain and who makes your crops grow"
Jesus, help people turn away from idol worship

Listen

Luke 15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything.
Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger. I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants." So he left the place and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son".
But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."
Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

Acts 14.1-7: Paul and Barnabas went to another city, Iconium. As usual, their first stop was the local Jewish prayer hall. Many Jews became believers, as did many non-Jewish people. During their stay in Iconium, Paul and Barnabas preached fearlessly for the Lord. And the Lord supported them by allowing miracles to be worked by them. But their success again aroused opposition, and they were in danger of being stoned. So they went to Lycaonia and preached the Good News there

That they cannot repay you means you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again"

Yesterday I was one of 90 people who watched the powerful movie Drifting (... click trailer ...) at the Yau Ma Tei cinema, a special screening arranged by MercyHK ... attended by a large group of homeless people, staff and volunteers of MercyHH's shop in Temple Street, Salvation Army and NGO Gingko friends, helpers of the Missionaries of Charity, special friends of MercyHK, and some clergy ... including Fr Franco Mella who features in the movie. A moving experience that had many people in tears. For me it had the effect of wanting to do more for drug addicts .... which is what MercyHK is now doing with the hiring of a full-time worker to minister to drug addicts.

Exodus 26-27: God said to Moses: "Make a cover for the sacred tent. Make the cover's support frames of acacia wood. Make a veil of purple, violet and red behind which to put the sacred chest. Make an altar out of acacia wood. Make altar vessels out of bronze. Make a sacred courtyard to go around the tent. Place a sacred flame outside the veil and keep the flame burning from night till morning."

My recording of this reading

Psalm 127: If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor. If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil. Success comes not from earlier rising or from going later to rest, but from the Lord's blessing. Success is from the Lord who blesses the womb of  his beloved while she sleeps. Truly, children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
Lord, many people these days don't want children. Please help such people understand that children are a blessing

Acts 13.13-52: Paul and Barnabas went to another Antioch, Antioch in Pisidia. Out of jealousy, the local Jewish leaders there stopped Paul from preaching to the Jewish community. But the Jewish leaders kept up their campaign, and had Paul and Barnabas expelled from Pisidia
