90 mins at the nearby Chinese University office for the enrolling of more than a
dozen prisoners. Then back to the High Court for lunch with a very kind

Exodus
40: God said to Moses:
"On the first day of the first month,
consecrate and start using the Tent of Meeting.
Use chrism to anoint all the furnishings.
Anoint Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests."
Moses did everything that God asked.
Then a cloud covered the Tent
and the glory of God filled the sacred site.
At every stage of their journey in the desert,
the Israelites would continue their march
whenever the cloud rose from the sacred site.
A fire shone within the cloud at night.
Dear
God, please guide us on our way through life
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
144: Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress.
He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song,
you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the
Lord.
Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings
grown tall and strong from their youth;
our daughters graceful as columns,
adorned as though for a palace.
Let our crops and stock be blessed.
May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.
Lord, please help us love and
honor you every day.
Don't let us ever forget your love

Acts
17.10-12:
That night Paul and Silas left for the town
of Beroea. At the local prayer hall, the Jews were very open-minded and
they warmly welcomed the word of the Lord. Every day they studied the Scriptures to check
that Paul's words were true. Many Jews and many non-Jewish people became
believers
Jesus, please help people be open-minded when
hearing your message
Listen

John
1.35-51
(for Feast
of St Bartholomew):
John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew
and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God. Andrew and John then
followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus
changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met Philip and said to him
"Follow me". Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the
prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth"
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to
know and love you

Mon Aug 23
After 8.30am Mass at Yau Ma Tei yesterday, I went to St Alfred's, Tai Wai, an O.M.I. parish, for the annual feast day Mass, led by Cardinal John Tong. Then back to Jordan where in the afternoon a very special group from St Margaret's Parish, Happy Valley, came for a visit to our centres and for a tour of the local area ... including a visit to some homeless people for whom MercyHK is renting a room at the Alhambra Building in YMT.
For
several weeks I've been in W/App contact with a middle-aged Thai women who
returned to Bangkok after more than 8 years in prison in HK for drug trafficking
(... recruited/tricked by Nigerians in Thailand). Her situation has been very
complicated .... staying with a friend who has gone surety for her until extra
money is paid for quarantine (which was more expensive than I provided for her
according to what she was advised by Consulate in HK). A friend in HK has tried
to help me send extra money for her but there's been a problem with a change of
Swift Code address at the local bank and money has not yet been received. And
friend's mother does not want daughter to continue surety. So, the poor women is
due to report to a police station this morning ... and is fearful of being
locked up again. Her distress is so great that last Saturday night I contacted
an O.M.I. Thai confrere in Bangkok and Thailand Samaritans. God bless both of
them for phoning the woman and having long chats with her which greatly
encouraged her. Bangkok also under tight lockdown with big number of Covid
deaths and new cases each day. JESUS, PLEASE HELP THE DEAR WOMAN!

Exodus
39: The skilled workers made the high
priest's vestments:
his ephod, his breastpiece, his
robe.
Vestments were also made for the ordinary priests.
When everything for the whole Tent was finished,
Moses examined all the work.
He saw what a good job the workers had done.
Moses then blessed all the workers.
Dear
God, please help me always to do a good job
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
140-143: Lord, save me from
people who do evil,
you who do justice for the needy. I have no way out of
this situation.
And no one wants to help me. Lord, I beg you tonight
to make haste and give me an answer,
for my spirit fails within me. In the morning let me know your love
for I put my trust in you.
Lord, please help people who
are in big trouble
Listen

Acts
17.1-9: Paul and his friends next went to the town of
Thessalonika. On three Sabbaths, Paul spoke at the local prayer hall,
explaining how Jesus is the Anointed One. Some Jewish listeners and many non-Jewish people
became believers.
But the religious leaders, out of jealousy, stirred up a gang from the
market place. The gang dragged some believers to the city
council. The leaders shouted "The people who have been turning
the whole world upside down, have come to our town. They claim there is
another emperor, Jesus". The believers were eventually allowed to go on
bail
Jesus, please don't let jealous people stop
anyone from becoming a Christian

Luke
18.35-43: As Jesus entered Jericho, there was a blind
beggar sitting by the road. People in the crowd told him that Jesus of
Nazareth was passing by. So he called out "Jesus, Son of David,
have pity on me". Some people told him to be quiet, but he just
shouted all the louder "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and asked him "What do you
want me to do for you?"
He replied "Sir, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Receive your sight.
Your faith has saved you".
Instantly his sight returned, and he followed Jesus, praising God
Jesus, please heal my blind friend

Reflection on the above readings: It was quite obvious that the man was blind. So why did Jesus ask "What do you want me to do for you?" ... to get the man to express his faith

Joshua
23-24: As
Joshua neared the end of his life, he urged the Israelites to stay faithful to
the Lord while living with many foreign neighbours: "Continue to observe
everything written by Moses. Do not mingle with the foreign peoples still among
you.
Do not utter the names of their gods. Stay loyal to the Lord your God. Love the
Lord your God. If you stay faithful, the Lord will bless you. If you are
unfaithful, everything will go wrong for you. Choose today whom you will serve:
the Lord our God, or false gods. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
Dear Lord, may Joshua's dying words be true for me: "As for me and
my house, we will serve the Lord".
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
34: I will bless the Lord
at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its
boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let
us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he
set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord,
to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek
refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and
prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Ephesians
5.21-33: In
your families, treat each other as Christ wants you
to: Wives, in your husbands
see Christ the head of the Church. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loves the
Church. When men and women get married, they become one body.
This sacred action helps us understand the relationship between Christ and the
Church.
Jesus, please help husbands and wives to love each other the way you love the
Church

John
6.59-69: After hearing
what Jesus said about his flesh and blood, many of his disciples said "How
can anyone believe in such crazy ideas?" Many disciples then stopped
following Jesus. Jesus said to the 12 apostles "What about you? Are you
also going to leave me?" Peter replied "Lord, who shall we go to? You
have the message of eternal life. We believe you are the Holy One of God"
Jesus, please don't ever let me stop following you

As I walked from the High Court to Central yesterday morning, I stopped near the Hong Kong Club building to remember the only time I ever entered it: 34 years ago yesterday with three special friends who are now in Heaven: Audrey Donnithorne, Fr Ned Kelly and Leo Goodstadt ... in a meeting which established Aitece which since then has arranged for almost 400 teachers to work in China, mainly in poorer areas of the country. And as I entered Central MTR station who did I meet? Fr Tommy Murphy who is now the current CEO of Aitece! How to you spell "Providence"?!

139: O Lord, you search me and you know me.
You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my
life,
all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue,
you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding,

Acts
16.25-37: Late that night in prison, Paul and Silas were
praying and singing God's praises, while the other prisoners listened to
them. Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook
the prison.
All the doors opened, and the chains fell from all the prisoners. The main jailer drew his sword and was about
to kill himself,
thinking the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted to him "Don't hurt
yourself. We are all still here". Trembling, the jailer threw himself at the
feet of Paul and Silas. Then he escorted them out of the prison asking
"What must I do to be saved?" They said "Become a believer in the
Lord Jesus, and both you and your household will be saved". They explained the word of God to him and his
family. He washed their wounds and then they "washed his wounds"
by baptizing him and all his household. They had a meal together in the
jailer's home, to celebrate the family's conversion to belief in God

18.31-34: Once again Jesus explained to the 12 apostles
what would happen to him:
"Now we are going to Jerusalem. Everything written about me by the prophets will happen:
I will be handed over to the
pagans. I will be mocked and spat on. I will be scourged and put to
death. On the third day I will rise from the dead". But the apostles had no idea what his words meant

Acts
16.16-24:
One day we met a slave girl who made a
lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. The girl followed us each
day shouting "These are the servants of God". Paul said to the spirit possessing
her "I order you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to leave her".
The spirit immediately left her, but her owners were angry that she could
no longer tell fortunes. The owners seized Paul and Silas and dragged
them to court, saying to the magistrate "These people are causing a
disturbance in our city". A crowd supported the owners in calling for
their punishment. They were given many lashes and put into prison with their feet in irons

18.18-23: A young man from a prominent family asked
Jesus "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied "You know the commandments:
you must not commit adultery, you must not kill, you must not steal, you
must honor your father and mother". The man answered "I have kept all these
commandments all my life". Jesus then said "There is still one

16.1-10: In the town of
Lystra, Paul recruited
Timothy, whose mother was a Jewish Christian and whose father was Greek. As they visited one town after another, they
announced the decisions taken in Jerusalem about what Jewish practices to
follow. The local churches continued to grow strong in
faith as well as grow in numbers. One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian
appeared and said "Come across to Macedonia and help us". We
immediately crossed the sea to Macedonia (Luke was now with Paul)

Luke
18.9-14: Some people prided themselves on being
virtuous, and despised others. Jesus told them this story: Two men went to the Temple to pray, one a
religious leader, the other a social outcast. The leader stood there and said "I thank
you, God, that I am not greedy, unjust and adulterous like other people
such as this outcast here". The outcast did not even raise his eyes, but
beat his breast and said "God, be merciful to me, a sinner".
The outcast, I tell you, went home a friend of
God. The leader did not. People who exalt themselves will be humbled.
