Yesterday afternoon I attended a two hour lunch meeting with the Consul General and his assistant Consul of the Peru Consulate ... sharing ideas how to stop people from Peru bringing drugs to HK .... similar to meeting two weeks ago with staff of Indonesian Consulate .... and meeting next week with staff of Philippine Consulate

At the lunch the two men from Peru drank Coke .... because Coke's history began in Peru ... which explains why Coke is red and white!

Leviticus 18: Do not marry a close relative. Do not have sex during time of menstruation. Do not practise sodomy. Do not have sex with an animal.
Dear God, please help us to respect the gift of sex

My recording of this reading

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit. Such a person is on the Way of Life. People who do evil are on the Way of Death.
Dear Lord, please help me do good and avoid evil

Listen

Acts 19.23 - 20.1: In Ephesus there was a silversmith who employed many craftsmen making shrines of the local idol, Diana. The silversmith called a meeting of the city's silversmiths and said to them "Not just here in Ephesus, but in many parts of the region, this man Paul has converted many people with his argument that gods made by hand are not gods at all. This is a threat to our trade". A mob was formed and dragged two of Paul's companions to a local theatre. The town clerk eventually calmed the mob and dismissed them. By now Paul had decided to leave Ephesus. He went to Greece and spent three months there
Jesus, please help people give up the worship of idols made by human hands

Listen

Luke 22.1-6: Big crowds were in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover which was only a few days away. The religious  leaders were afraid that the crowds would prevent them from killing Jesus. But then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot who was one of the 12 apostles. Judas went to the leaders to plan how to capture Jesus.  The leaders agreed to give Judas some money for his help. Judas then began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus at a time when there were no crowds around
Jesus, please protect me from Satan's influence, and from any sort of pride that might make me want to abandon your friendship

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Psalm 1 encourages us to continuing making time each day for reading the Bible!

------------------------------

Two hundred people all arrived at the Pearly Gate at the same time. St Peter ordered them to form two lines in front of him. "Everyone who comes from a family in which the woman is in charge, stand to my right," he said. "And everyone who comes from a family in which the man is in charge, stand to my left." A long line formed to his right, and on his left only one lone man stood. St Peter, very disappointed, called to the man. "Well done," he said, "now tell all these people why it is that you are the only one standing on my left." "I don't know," the man shrugged, "my wife told me to stand here."

As a prison chaplain I feel sorry for anyone locked up .... including animals. For many years I have felt that keeping birds in small cages is cruelty. Recently I saw a poor bird which must have high blood pressure. We might smile at this picture at first, but it's nor so funny if you're the bird!

Leviticus 16-17: Instructions for the annual Day of Atonement: Once a year Aaron or his successor must wear special vestments and enter the sanctuary  past the veil. Then he is to offer two goats to pray for atonement for the whole community of Israel. One goat will be sacrificed in the Temple; the other is to be set free to go out into the desert - a symbol of the people's sins being carried away.  (...this story gives us the English word: "scapegoat")
Dear God, please forgive us, and help us to forgive others

My recording of this reading

Psalm 149, 150: Sing a new song to the Lord. Let the praise of God be always on our lips. Praise God in his holy temple.
Praise him in the heavens. O praise him with sound of trumpet. Praise him with lute and harp. Praise him with drums and dancing. Praise him with strings and pipes. Let everything that lives and breathes, give praise to the Lord our Creator.  Alleluia!
Lord, to you we say every day "Allelu-ia" ("praise God")
Listen

Acts 19.11-20: So remarkable were the miracles worked by God through Paul, that even handkerchiefs which had touched him, were taken to the sick, and they were healed and evil spirits came out of them. Some believers admitted how they had practised magic. They collected their expensive books on magic and burnt them in public. Things like these helped the word of the Lord to continue spreading
Jesus, what can I do to help your message spread?

Listen

Luke 21.3-38: Jesus said to his disciples that Jerusalem would be destroyed and its people scattered throughout the world. He also spoke of how his followers would be persecuted,  and of the end of the world: "The planets will be shaken, nations will be in agony,  bewildered by the force of the oceans. Then they will see me coming in a cloud with great power and glory. To prepare for your own end of earthly life, stay faithful to prayer and goodness. Don't let your heart be coarsened by debauchery, drunkenness and material cares". In this his final week on earth, Jesus spent the daytime in the Temple, teaching. From early morning the people would gather round him to listen to him. Then he would spend the night on the Mount of Olives
Jesus, help me be faithful to prayer and goodness

Reflection on the above readings: Some people in developed countries don't believe in curses and evil spirits (Acts, above). But people in other parts of the world understand that curses are real

A couple were having a heated argument about whose job it was to make the coffee. The wife eventually said, "I can prove to you from Scripture that it's the husband's job," she claimed. "Ha!" said the husband, "the Bible doesn't mention coffee, not even once." "OK," she said, "hand me the Bible." He handed her the Bible, she opened it, and pointed: "There you are: HeBrews!"

c.f. readings for Sunday 22

Deuteronomy 2-4: Moses continued his talk to the Israelites: "God has been with us these 40 years, watching over us and providing for us. God gave us many victories and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies. So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws. Do not forget the things your eyes have seen. Make sure to tell these things to your children's children. God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people. If you seek God with all your heart and soul you will find him. Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below, he and no other. Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children may prosper and live long in the land that the Lord your God gives you forever."
Lord, please help me to seek you with all my heart

My recording of this reading

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

 Listen

James 1.26-27: Don't go thinking you're "religious" while your tongue is out of control. That's the wrong idea of religion. Genuine religion, in the eyes of God our Father is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows, and staying clear of bad values
Jesus, help me control my tongue ...and help me do more to help the poor

 Listen

Mark 7.1-23: Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."
Jesus, please  clean my heart

"Not bad at all. Now Dick, What's the opposite of depression?" "Joy," Dick replied. "Very good," said the pastor. "Now Harry, What's the opposite of woe?" Harry thought hard for a while, then brightened up, jerked up his hands and said, "Giddy up!"  (.... Whoa!)

Leviticus 13-15: Instructions for hygiene: People with skin diseases, suspected leprosy, boils and burns should be carefully examined and isolated if necessary. The clothing and homes of people with leprosy should be put out of use. During and after seminal or illness discharges and menstruation, people should show extra concern for hygiene
Dear God, please help me take good care of my health

My recording of this reading

Psalm 148: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights. Praise him all his angels, praise him all his spirits. Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, shining stars. Let them praise the name of the Lord. His word gave life to all of them. Praise the Lord from the earth, sea creatures and all oceans. Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy winds that obey his word. Praise him all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars. Praise him all animals, wild and tame, reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples, earth's princes and rulers. Praise him young men and maidens, old people together with children. Let them praise the name of the Lord. He is the praise of all who love him.
Lord our God and Creator, you are worthy of all praise

Listen

Acts 19.8-10: For three months, Paul went to the Jewish prayer hall in Ephesus, speaking boldly about the kingdom of God. When some Jews strongly attacked the Way, he stopped going to the prayer hall, and began daily discussions in a lecture room. He kept doing this for two years, with the result that people from many places, both Jews and non-Jews, were able to hear the word of God
Jesus, please give more and more people the opportunity to hear your word

Listen

Luke 20.40-45: After some  leaders had asked him some trick questions, Jesus said to his disciples. "Beware of the religious leaders who like to walk about in special clothes and love to be greeted obsequiously in the market places. They like the front seats in prayer halls and the places of honor at banquets. They like making a show of lengthy prayers. But at the same time they steal the property of widows. They will receive a severe sentence from God at the end of their lives
Jesus, please help religious leaders be good people

Reflection on the above readings:

Yesterday morning on the way to 7.15 Mass at St Paul's Parish, Yau Ma Tei, I heard the sound of a new-born kitten in distress on a 1/F ledge of a building near my home. Several other people heard the sound, but no sign of kitten. Same sound was audible when I came back from Mass and again around midday. Then all quiet during the afternoon. But last night around 8pm the kitten re-sounded and was rescued by a group of women who lovingly care for stray cats. God bless the women! And the kitten!

Leviticus 11-12: The people were told which animals were "clean" and which were "unclean". Only "clean" animals were allowed to be eaten. Regulations were also made for when a woman had a baby: a lamb or two turtledoves or two young pigeons were to be offered as a prayer for mother and baby.
Dear God, please give me a clean heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 147: Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly
and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars. He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord delights in those who love and honor him, in those who wait for his love.

It is right and fitting to praise and love you, Lord our Creator

Listen

Acts 18.1-4: Paul left Athens and went to the city of Corinth. He met a Jewish couple who had recently left Italy when the Emperor Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome. The couple were tentmakers, like Paul himself. Paul stayed with them and they worked together. Each Sabbath Paul preached in the prayer halls, trying to convert Jews as well as non-Jewish people
Jesus, thank you for the example of Paul who worked to support himself and didn't live off others

Listen

Luke 19.41-48: As Jesus caught sight of Jerusalem, he shed tears over it and said "How I wish you had accepted my message of peace. You will be totally destroyed, because you rejected God's offer of grace". Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out the sellers. According to the Scripture", he said, "my house will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers' den". Each day Jesus taught in the Temple. The leaders wanted to do away with him, but they didn't know how to, since most of the ordinary  people had great respect for Jesus
Jesus, please don't let me ever reject your friendship

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Jesus shed tears over Jerusalem ... and when Lazarus died ... and probably on many other occasions.

After morning Mass yesterday at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei, I joined Simon (social assistant for homeless people) and Patrick (social assistant for drug addicts) for a trip to Cheung Chau ... where with Lucia (centres' manager) we visited MercyHK's Centre for Men and Centre for Women (.. with a nice lunch in between visits). The two centres currently have a total of 9 residents, all of them former prisoners ... six of them on bail release. A very special ministry indeed!

In the evening I went back to St Paul's for the monthly St Vincent de Paul meeting. No trouble sleeping last night!

Leviticus 8-10Moses followed God's instructions and ordained Aaron and his sons as priests. Moses washed them, put special clothing on them, anointed their heads with chrism and offered a special animal sacrifice on their behalf. Then Aaron lifted up his hands towards the people and blessed them. A  flame from the Lord consumed the offering on the altar. The people shouted for joy and fell on their knees. But later on when two of Aaron's sons offered unauthorized fire, a fire from the Lord consumed them. Moses then said: "God expects the highest standard from priests".
Dear God, please bless and protect all priests

Recording

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Recording

Acts 17.29-34: Paul continued speaking to the intellectuals: "We have no excuse for thinking that the Creator looks like something carved in gold, silver or stone. God overlooked that sort of thing when we were ignorant. But now he is telling everyone to repent and believe in Jesus raised from the dead". Some intellectuals laughed at Paul. A few became believers
Jesus, please give intellectuals the humility to believe in you

Listen

Luke 19.28-40: When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples  spread their clothes on the road, and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried out "Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the stones will cry out"
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord, we praise and love you

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: The religious leaders in the Gospel were the intellectuals of their nation. Like the intellectuals in Acts, they too had a problem accepting God

Psalm 145: I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.

Acts 17.16-28: In Athens, Paul was sad see so much idol worship. Each day he talked to as many people as he could about Jesus. He was invited to a meeting of intellectuals. Luke 19.1-9: In Jericho there was a wealthy man named Zacchaeus, a senior tax collector. He wanted to see what kind of person Jesus was. But because of his short stature he couldn't see over the crowd. So he climbed a tree. Jesus saw him up the tree and said "Zacchaeus, come down, because I will stay at your house today". Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Jesus warmly. People complained "He's gone to stay at the house of an outcast". Zacchaeus replied "Sir, I am going to give half of my property to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I'll pay them back fourfold". Jesus said to him "Today salvation has come to this house"
