Numbers 6: God said to Moses and Aaron: "This is how you are to bless the people. Say to them: May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peace."
Dear God, please bless everyone in the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid evil and to do good

Listen

Acts 21.15-40: In Jerusalem Paul gave a report to James and other Christian leaders of all that God had done for non-Jews through his ministry. But Paul was soon seen by Jews from where he had traveled. He was dragged out of the Temple and beaten by a wild crowd. The beating was stopped by a Roman captain who had Paul bound with chains. The crowd was calling out for Paul to be killed. Paul asked for permission to speak to the crowd and the captain agreed. Paul then spoke to the crowd in Hebrew
Jesus, please protect Christians who live in dangerous places

Listen

Luke 22.63-65: The men who were guarding Jesus mocked him and beat him. They blindfolded him. "Since you are a prophet", they said, "tell us who hit you just then". And they continued heaping insults on him
Jesus, please stop me from making offensive fun of other people

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: A good exercise - try to memorise these words from today's first reading: May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peace.

Numbers 1-5: A census was taken of all the men aged twenty years and above. The twelve tribes were told to pitch their tents all around the Sacred Tent site. Each time they moved to a new place and pitched their tents, they would do so in the place allocated to each tribe.
Dear God, may our homes never be too far from a church

My recording of this reading

Psalm 6: Have mercy on me, Lord, I have no strength. My body is racked with pain. Please heal me, Lord. I am exhausted with my groaning. Every night  my pillow is covered with tears. Lord, please hear my prayer.
Dear Lord, please help people who are in distress of mind or body

Listen

Acts 21.1-14: Our sea voyage took us to the city of Caesarea. A prophet there took Paul's belt and used it to tie up his own feet and hands, as a sign of what would happen to Paul in Jerusalem. Everyone implored Paul not to go to Jerusalem. Paul replied "I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus". And so we packed up and headed for Jerusalem
Jesus, please give me a bit of Paul's courage

Listen

Luke 22.54-62: The men who arrested Jesus took him to the home of the main religious leader. Peter followed at a distance. As Peter sat by a fire in the courtyard, a servant-girl said "This man was with Jesus".  Peter replied "Woman I do not know him". A little while later, another person said "You are one of them". Peter replied "I am not". About an hour later, a man said "He was certainly with them. He is from Galilee". Peter replied "I do not know what you are talking about". While he was still speaking, a rooster crowed, and the Lord looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered what the Lord had said, "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times". Peter went outside and cried bitterly
Jesus, don't let me ever deny that I know you

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Paul, post-Resurrection/Pentecost, said he was prepared to die for Jesus. Peter, pre-Resurrection/Pentecost, said the same thing. Eventually both of them died for the name of Jesus, in Rome, around the same time.

c.f. readings for Sunday 23

Isaiah 35: Strengthen all weary hands, steady all trembling knees, and say to all faint hearts "Courage! Do not be afraid. The Lord is coming to save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy. Exiles will return to Zion shouting for joy, everlasting joy on their faces. Joy and gladness will go with them. Sorrow and lament will be ended.
Lord, please heal the friends I know who are blind, deaf, dumb....

My recording of this reading

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

 Listen

James 2.1-13: Don't try to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions between classes of people. Suppose two men come into your prayer meeting, one beautifully dressed and with a gold ring; the other poor and in shabby clothes. If you welcome the rich man, and look down on the poor man, you are making a big mistake. It was those who are poor according to the world that God chose to be rich in faith. So, never make distinctions between classes of people. Everyone is your neighbor. Love your neighbor as yourself. There will be judgment without mercy for people who have not been merciful. But merciful people need have no fear of judgment
Jesus, help me treat everyone equally and fairly. No favorites

 Listen

Mark 7.31-37: Jesus traveled through the area south of the Sea of Galilee. A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him. Jesus took the man aside in private, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man's ears and put spittle on his tongue. Then he prayed and said "Be opened". The man's ears were opened and his speech became normal. The people said "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak".
Jesus,  heal (..name..) who is "deaf and dumb"

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings: There's physical deafness and moral deafness ... deafness to the cries of the poor... deafness to the message of the Lord

Leviticus 26-27: God's words through Moses: "If you  keep my commandments I will bless you in every way:
- you will have rain at the right time
- the earth shall give its produce
- your land will know peace
- you will be fruitful and multiply
- I will be in your midst: I will be your God
and you shall be my people.

But if you ignore my words and break my commandments
- you will have no peace
- there will be no rain
- the earth shall not yield its produce
- sickness and pestilence will afflict you
- you will be scattered among the nations".

Dear God,  please help us to keep your commandments

My recording of this reading

Psalm 5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your help. Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.  I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go. It is you, Lord, who bless good people. You surround them with favors, as with a shield.
Lord, I adore you as my Creator

Listen

Acts 20.28-38: Paul continued "You elders are the leaders of the Church of God. Be on your guard against bad leaders trying to mislead people. Remember my example. I never asked anyone for money or clothes. You know how my work as a tentmaker earned enough to support my companions and me. Remember Jesus' words There is more happiness in giving than in receiving". When he finished speaking, he knelt down with them and prayed. Then they took him to the ship
Jesus, please help Gospel workers imitate Paul

Listen

Luke 22.47-53: While Jesus was  speaking, a group of men arrived, led by Judas. One of Jesus' apostles used his sword to cut off the right ear of one of the men sent to arrest Jesus. Jesus told his apostles not to use their swords. Then touching the man's ear, he healed him. Jesus said to the men arresting him "This is your hour. This is the reign of darkness".
Jesus, you gave up your freedom for our salvation

Listen

Leviticus 24-25: God's words through Moses: "Every seventh year your land is to have a rest, a sabbath for the Lord. Every fifty years will be a Year of Jubilee: no sowing, no harvesting, a time for freeing slaves".
Dear God, please help us understand and keep your word

My recording of this reading

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once,
for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace

Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

Listen

Acts 20.22-24: Paul continued "Now you see me a prisoner already in spirit. I am on my way to Jerusalem, and have no idea what will happen to me there. The Holy Spirit has made it clear that imprisonment and persecution await me there. But life to me is not a thing to waste words on. What matters is that when I finish my race, I have carried out the mission the Lord Jesus gave me - to bear witness to the Good News of God's grace"
Jesus, please help me live a worthwhile life

Listen

Luke 22.39-46: After the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus said to them "Pray for protection in time of trial". Then he went apart by himself, about 40 meters away, knelt down and prayed "Father, save me from this time of trial. But let your will, not mine, be done". An angel from heaven appeared to him to give him strength. His agony was so great that his sweat became drops of blood falling to the ground. When he got up and went to the disciples, he found them sleeping - so overcome were they with sorrow
Jesus, please help me to pray "not my will, but yours be done"

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Luke, a doctor, often records special medical items .... perspiring blood ... Hermatidrosis

Leviticus 21-23God's words through Moses: "Regard the priests as holy, for they offer holy sacrifice. Keep the sacred festivals:
- every Sabbath
- the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread
- the First Sheaf
- the Feast of Weeks
- the first day of the seventh month
- the Day of Atonement
- the Feast of Tabernacles".

Dear God, thank you for special worship days and seasons

Recording

Psalm 3: When people make fun of me for believing in you, Lord, I deeply remember how you are my help and my shield. Even when the whole world seems against me, I can go to bed and sleep easy, knowing that you protect me. O Lord, please rescue me from people who plot against me. Lord our savior, please bless everyone who needs help.
Lord, thank you for your protection and help

Recording

Acts 20.17-21: Paul's journey took him to Meletus where he met the elders of the church from Ephesus. He said to them. "You know what my way of life has been from the first day I arrived among you. I have served the Lord in all humility, facing all the sorrows and trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you. I have preached to you and instructed you, both in public and in your homes, urging everyone to believe in our Lord Jesus"
Jesus, please help me be a bit more like Saint Paul

Listen

Luke 22.31-34: Jesus said to the apostle Peter "Satan has got his wish to attack you. But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. Once you have recovered from Satan's attack, you in your turn must give strength to others". Peter said "Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you and to die with you". Jesus replied "Peter, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you know me"
Jesus, please strengthen my faith. Please strengthen my faith

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: People who have "recovered" must give encouragement to others ... like MercyHK's new social worker ... a former drug addict .... he now ministers to drug addicts.

Leviticus 19: God's words through Moses: "Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy. Honor your father and mother.
The Sabbath must be a holy day. When you collect from harvest or vine, leave something for the poor and the stranger. Be just, honest and truthful in your relationships. Do not let hatred live in your heart".

Dear God, please help me live according to your sacred word

My recording of this reading

Psalm 2: Why are the nations revolting against God? Why won't the nations accept God? O kings and rulers of the nations, listen to God's voice. Serve the Lord with love and honor. Blessed are the nations that love the Lord
Let all the nations love you, Lord. Let all the nations love you

Listen

Acts 20.7-12: In the city of Troas Paul and his group joined the local believers for the Breaking of Bread one Saturday night. Paul's sermon went on till the middle of the night. As Paul went on and on, a young man who was sitting on the window-sill, went to sleep and fell to the ground three floors below. He was dead when they picked him up. Paul went down to the boy and prayed over him. The boy came back to life. Paul kept on talking till dawn. That same day he left Troas
Jesus, is it ok if I pray that someone who has died will come back to life?

Listen

Luke 22.12-20: On the evening of the Passover feast, Jesus and his apostles ate the Passover Lamb in a large upper room furnished with couches. While they were having the meal, Jesus took some bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it and gave it to his apostles saying: "This is my body. Do this in memory of me". Then he took a cup of wine and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood which will be poured out for you"
Jesus, please help me understand how your Body and Blood are present in a Communion service
