Yesterday before attending an O.M.I. meeting in the afternoon, I visited a dear friend in hospital. On the way home when I checked W/App messages I gave thanks at the news that a man who had been in detention for several years on a drug trafficking charge was acquitted yesterday by a High Court jury
Today's Feast of the Cross (see readings below) encourage us to spread the message:

Numbers 21: In
order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline.
But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the
people, and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have
sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God
heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone
bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live.
Jesus' words (John 3.13):
"The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".

not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our
ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food
and water for them in
the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion

brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes.
But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God

loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his
Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world
might be saved.

They summed up their accusations by saying "The plain truth is that

Way, which they malign as a sect,
I serve and worship the very same God worshipped by our ancestors. I live
in hope that God will raise the dead. If that's my crime, my accusers are
just as guilty as I am". Felix postponed a decision. He met
with Paul many times, hoping Paul would offer him a

others, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God". The soldiers mocked him too "If you are
the king of the Jews, save yourself"

187: Yesterday afternoon at the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street, I attended the usual Sat 3pm prayer meeting to pray for healing .... as usual a most encouraging experience
MercyHK's second hand shop at 191 Temple Street has had a face
lift .... with renovation arranged by Camay and Yuki (God bless you both!) and 8
new metal racks down the centre of the shop
Yesterday news reached HK that a parent of a prisoner out on bail
(staying at the Mercy Centre on Cheung Chau Island) went home to Heaven on Sep
10 after succumbing to Covid-19. A huge blow for the prisoner, but at least the
prisoner had the chance over the past few months to communicate by W/App video
with the parent. Eternal Rest to the parent, and consolation to the prisoner and
family.

the usual Friday lunch at the Dr Jesus Centre with MercyHK social
assistant Simon and me yesterday .... after which Simon and I were joined by Sr
Louise and 14 guests for the usual 3pm gathering for homeless people. Friday
indeed a very special day! (and see

captain. The captain immediately arranged for a large group of soldiers to

a woman who works "on the street: insisted on carrying the stools for me. A
very humbling experience (...She was not one of the 9 who attended the lunch

Yesterday after the usual Thursday 3pm gathering for homeless
people at the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street, Jordan, I went with MercyHK
Director Eddie and social assistant Simon to inspect a unit of 4 rooms in nearby
Shanghai Street .... for which, in the name of MercyHK, I signed a contract
($16,000 per month) which will allow Simon to house another group of homeless
people. Yesterday morning Simon and I joined a two and a half hour zoom meeting
for representatives of a large number of NGOs which help homeless people. The
group has just conducted a major survey of homelessness in HK and is planning to
hold a press conference on Oct 12 to lobby the government to do more to help
homeless people.

Numbers 9: Whenever the Israelites pitched camp
the Cloud of God's presence covered the Sacred Tent.
From nightfall until morning,
the Cloud took the appearance of fire.
Whenever the Cloud lifted above the Tent,
the Israelites broke camp.
Wherever the Cloud stopped,
there the Israelites pitched camp.
Sometimes the Cloud stayed in one place
for one day, sometimes for a month, sometimes a year.
However long the Cloud stayed above the Tent
the Israelites remained in camp.
In this way they pitched camp and broke camp
at the Lord's command.
The
Cloud in Christian tradition is understood to be God the Holy Spirit,
so we can pray:
Dear Holy Spirit,
please lead me and guide me
just as you guided the Israelites through the desert

To find out why the Jews were attacking Paul,
the captain arranged a meeting of the religious leaders, and allowed Paul
to speak to them. Paul realized that the leaders had two groups:
Sadducees (who didn't believe in angels or an after-life) and Pharisees
(who did believe in angels and an after-life). So Paul called out "I am a Pharisee. It
is for our hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial".
This caused the Pharisees and Sadducees to begin a violent argument that
put Paul's life in danger. The captain ordered Paul to be taken back into
the barracks. The next night, the Lord appeared to him and said
"Courage! You have born witness for me in Jerusalem. Now you must do
the same in Rome"
Jesus, please give courage to Christians who live in
dangerous places

the people "You brought this man before me as a political agitator.
Neither Herod nor I have found a case against the man. He has done nothing
deserving death. I shall have him flogged and then let him go". But the leaders and people screamed out "Away with him. Crucify
him!" Pilate asked "Why? What harm has he
done?"
They kept shouting "Crucify him! Crucify him!"
Pilate then gave in to them and handed Jesus over for crucifixion
Jesus, how great your mental suffering must
have been as the crowd shouted for your death

Last
night at a special Mass at Notre Dame College in Kowloon City, former OMI
Primary teacher Dominic Fung professed his Final Vows as an O.M.I. Please
God he will be ordained a deacon at the end of this year, and a priest next
year.
I
watched this yesterday. Excellent!

Everything's a miracle!
How come our earth has so much food for us?! So many kinds of fruit and
vegetables! Each item a masterpiece! How can anyone say it all happened
"just by chance"?!

situation. But when they tied him down, Paul said
"Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen? The captain said "It cost me a lot of
money to acquire Roman citizenship". Paul replied "I was
born a Roman citizen". Paul was untied without being flogged

religious leaders.
Jesus was brought before them. They asked him "Are you the Son of
God?". He replied "Yes".
They said "We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips". They took him to the Roman governor,
Pilate, and made many false accusations against him. Pilate said "I find no case against
him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who made fun of him and sent
him back to Pilate
Jesus, on trial before the leaders, before
Herod and before Pilate, please help all prisoners who are on trial today

Drug Addiction Centre at Hei Ling Chau Island. where I chatted with more
than 200 inmates I chatted with, none of whom are involved in building
up forces! I handed in several hundred copies of Dr
Jesus, Good News for the Poor
and the Simple Bible Old Testament
(mainly in Chinese, some in English and other languages).

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
If it's Mary's birthday, how come the readings are all about Jesus' birth?! Because Mary is the moon, Jesus is the sun .... all of Mary's light/importance comes from Jesus and reflects Jesus' light/importance. Honoring Mary is a very ancient and very special way of honoring Jesus. Just like in any place/culture we give honor to a person by honoring their parents
