Yesterday afternoon I went on a shopping expedition to Tsim Sha Tsui, beginning with a visit to Rosary Church, then the HKMA to enrol a prisoner in a course, then to a bookstore to get some items for prisoners, then to Mannings in Jordan to collect some "Ensure Plus" for a prisoner. I am hoping to visit a prison today and another one tomorrow.

c.f. readings for Feast of St Matthew
Isaiah 51-52:
Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.

My recording of this reading

Psalm  117:
O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Recording

Ephesians 4.1-16: I implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall become more and more like Christ. We are parts of the Body of Christ. Christ is the head. Each part must do its bit to keep the Body healthy and growing in love.
Jesus, help me understand how the Church is your Body

Recording

Matthew 9.9-13: One day when Jesus was walking past a customs house he said to a tax collector named Matthew "Follow me". Matthew got up and followed Jesus. Matthew invited Jesus and Jesus' friends to a dinner in his house. Some tax collectors and "bad" people sat at Jesus' table. Religious leaders saw this and complained to Jesus' friends "Why does your master eat with tax collectors and bad people?" Jesus' answer was "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and think about the Bible words 'What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'. I have a special concern for rejects and down-and-outs."
Jesus, please help religious leaders in today's world to care more about people who are rejected by society

Numbers 17: Once again the people complained against Moses and Aaron. This time through Moses God told the leaders of the 11 tribes to bring 11 branches and plant them with Aaron’s branch. The next day Aaron's branch had blossomed and produced fruit
Aaron's branch then became a sign to the people that they should stop complaining

Dear God, please help me not to complain so much

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22:
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe.
Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. ay all the nations know and worship you
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Listen

Acts 27.21-37: Paul then spoke to everyone: Don't despair. There will be no loss of life. Last night an angel of God said to me: "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to go to Rome. Therefore God grants you the safety of all who are sailing with you. On the 14th day, Paul took some bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it and  gave it to everyone to eat. This gave them courage. There were 276 of them on the ship
Jesus, thank you for the courage that Communion gives us

Listen

Luke 24.1-11: On Sunday morning, at daybreak, the women went to the tomb with the spices they had prepared. They found that the large stone which had been put at the tomb's entrance had been rolled away. They entered the tomb and found that the body of Jesus was not there. Suddenly two men in brilliant clothes appeared at their side. The men said to them "Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here. He has risen, just as he said he would". The women told all this to the eleven apostles. But the apostles did not believe them
Jesus,  increase my faith in your resurrection

c.f. readings for Sunday 25

Wisdom 1-2: Love virtue, honesty and simplicity, since God is found by people whose hearts are seeking goodness. Selfishness, dishonesty and bad habits, these close the door of our hearts and prevent Wisdom from entering. Bad people persecute good people, since the lives of good people are a reproach to bad people.
Lord, please help me to be a good person

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

 Listen

James 3.16-17: Wherever you find jealousy and ambition, you find disharmony and evil practices. On the other hand, wisdom from heaven is good and peaceful and kindly and considerate. It is full of compassion, and does good. There is no trace of partiality or hypocrisy in it
Jesus, give me wisdom. Make me peaceful

 Listen

Mark 9.33-35: One day Jesus heard his disciples arguing about which one of them was the most important. So he said to them "If you want to be No.1, you must become No.1,000 and a servant of everyone else"
Jesus, help world leaders care more about their people than about themselves

Sat Sep 18

Once again two lovely Friday gatherings yesterday at the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street .... 12.30 lunch with my social work assistants Simon and Patrick, and 6 mothers who work on Temple Street .... then 3pm Simon and I (helped by Bishop Ha on YouTube!) with 14 people most of whom used to sleep at McDonald's or in a park until MercyHK provided accommodation for them. Like Robinson Crusoe I am happy when Friday comes!

Nuclear submarines .... I am sad to see Australia, China, the US, the UK and so many other countries spending so much on "defence" .... while there is so much poverty in the world .... and while not enough is being done to stop our beautiful planet from "going over the cliff"

Numbers 16: Another rebellion broke out when Korah and his group of 250 men rebelled against Moses and Aaron. This group said "You take too much on yourselves. The whole community is consecrated. How can you say you are more important than the community?" The next morning this group and other rebels were punished by God: the ground where the Korah group were standing split open and they disappeared into the hole. The other rebels died when a fire came down from heaven and consumed them
Dear God, please help people not to rebel against you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord.
Lord, may our plans and hopes be acceptable to you. Please bless our plans

Listen

Acts 27.9-20: Navigation at that time of the year was dangerous, since winter was starting. But the ship's captain set sail hoping to reach Phoenix, a harbor in Crete. Suddenly a fierce storm began and the ship could not be turned head-on to the wind. We had to let ourselves be driven by the wind. The ship was badly damaged by the storm. On the second day, the cargo was dumped overboard. For several days both sun stars were invisible as the storm raged.  We lost all hope of surviving
Jesus, help sailors who are in danger at sea today

 Listen

Luke 23.50-56: Joseph from the town of Arimathaea was a member of the religious leaders' council. He was a good and just man, and had not agreed to the killing of Jesus.  Late Friday afternoon, he went to Governor Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. He took it down from the cross, wrapped it in a burial cloth, and put it in a rock tomb that had not yet been used. The women from Galilee who had come to Jerusalem with Jesus went with Joseph to the tomb. Then they left to prepare burial spices and ointments. They planned to put these on Jesus' body after the Saturday Sabbath day of rest.
Jesus in the tomb, please give eternal life to all the dead

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Hopeless situation number 1: Paul, Luke and group on ship in storm. Hopeless situation number 2: Jesus' dead body in the tomb. But "hopeless" not in God's dictionary!

Numbers 13-14: Moses sent some men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan. After some weeks the men returned and reported that the land was fertile and rich. But most of the men also said that the towns of Canaan were too well fortified for the Israelites to capture. They said that the Canaanites were too strong for the Israelites. Only Caleb and Joshua had the trust in God and courage to do battle with the Canaanites. Just as the rest of the people were thinking of stoning Joshua and Caleb, the glory of God appeared at the Sacred Tent. God then said that all the men aged twenty and over who had refused to go to Canaan would indeed never see Canaan: they would keep on traveling in the desert until they died. Canaan would not be entered by the Israelites until all the men aged twenty and over had died, excepting Caleb and Joshua. The reconnoiter men who inspired the rebellion were all struck dead that day
Dear God, please give me more courage to face the trials of life, and don't let me ever discourage other people

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law
which shines in our hearts
. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.

Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Listen

Acts 27.1-8: For the journey to Rome, Paul and some other prisoners were put in the custody of a soldier named Julius. After sailing for one day, we arrived at the city of Sidon, where Julius kindly allowed Paul to meet with some friends. Then we sailed past Cyprus and reached the city of Myra in Lycia, where we changed to a ship bound for Italy. The wind was against us near Crete. We struggled along the coast to a place called Fair Havens
Jesus, help prison guards to be kind like Julius

Listen

Luke 23.44-49: At about midday, there was an eclipse of the sun. The whole land was in darkness until about 3pm. The veil of the Temple was torn right down the middle. Jesus cried out in a loud voice "Father, into your hands I entrust my life". Then he died. When the Roman army leader saw what had happened, he said "This was a great and good man". The people who had been present went home asking God for mercy. Jesus' friends stood at a distance and saw all that had happened
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: The sin of Adam and Eve closed the door of Heaven to humanity. God could have reopened that door by just a word, but he chose to open it by sending his own Son to die on a Cross. Why did God go to such an extreme length to reopen Heaven? To show us in the most striking way possible how much he loves us .... and to make it as difficult as possible for us to choose evil/Hell over goodness/Heaven

Last night while engaged in several other jobs I had the happy multi-task of co-ordinating arrangements for one of the acquitted Brazil women (see top of this menu) to go to MercyHK's Centre for Women on Cheung Island ....where she will stay for a short period until transferred back to Brazil. Numbers 12Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, started complaining against Moses. So God called Moses, Aaron and Miriam to the Sacred Tent. God said: "Moses is at home in my house and I speak with him face to face. You were wrong to speak against my servant Moses". When God finished speaking Miriam had become a leper. Moses pleaded with God for Miriam. Miriam was exiled from the camp for seven days and then the leprosy left her

Psalms 17-18:
Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of all praise

Acts 24-25: After two years, Felix was succeeded by Festus. Festus arranged a new trial for Paul. The religious leaders repeated their accusations. Paul repeated his innocence. Festus wanted to gain favor with the leaders so he said to Paul "Are you willing to go to Jerusalem for a trial with the full council of religious leaders, at which I would preside?" Paul knew his rights, and stood his ground, not wanting to go to a kangaroo court in Jerusalem. So he invoked his right as a Roman citizen: "I appeal to Caesar". Festus replied "You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar (Rome) you shall go"

Luke 23.39-43: One of the criminals hanging on a cross mockingly said to Jesus "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us as well". But the other criminal rebuked the first one and said "We are paying the penalty for our crimes. But this man has done nothing wrong". "Jesus", he said, "remember me when you come into your kingdom". Jesus replied "I promise you, this day you will be with me in Paradise"

Yesterday I visited Hei Ling Chau men's prison ("18C") on Hei Ling Chau Island ... chatted individually with more than 200 men ....handed in around 300 booklets/Bibles ... came away tired but really happy. I used to visit 18C every week, but, to my shame, yesterday's visit was my first this year!

Last night at MercyHK's shop at 191 Temple Street I had the joy of meeting a prisoner who was acquitted by a High Court jury on Monday. I helped him get some shoes, shorts, shirts, underwear and socks ... and an umbrella!

Readings for Feast of Mary of Sorrows
Hebrews 5.7-9:
During his life on earth, Christ offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 31: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Let me never be put to shame. In your justice, set me free, hear me and speedily rescue me. Be a rock of refuge for me, a mighty stronghold to save me, for you are my rock, my stronghold. Into your hands I commend my spirit. It is you who will redeem me, Lord. I trust in you, Lord. You are my God. My life is in your hands, deliver me from the hands of those who hate me.

Luke 2.33-35: As the child's father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother: "You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected - and a sword will pierce your own soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare."
Recording

John 19.25-27: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, "Woman, this is your son".  Then to the disciple he said, "This is your mother". And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home
