Tues Sep 28

Hello from St Paul's Retreat Centre in Sheung Shui where I am attending monthly O.M.I. meeting. When meeting finishes at lunch time today I hope to go to nearby Lo Wu women's prison ..... to hand in many items and to visit as many people as I have time for.

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for two drug trafficking cases involving women from other countries. One case was adjourned (a guilty plea) and the other case is continuing (a trial). God bless both women and their legal teams and judges!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Numbers 23-24: When Balaam came to the king of Moab, the king again tried to get Balaam to curse the Israelites. But Balaam followed God's words and said: "How can I curse people that God does not curse? These people are specially blessed by God. How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob. How lovely are your dwellings, O Israel. From you will come a mighty one
who will reign over countless peoples. A star from Jacob will be leader".

Dear God, please bless the Jewish people with peace and love

My recording of this reading

Psalm 31:
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. My eyes are full of tears, my heart full of sorrow. Everyone makes fun of me. My friends don't want to know me. Save me, Lord, from this mess. I praise you Lord, for you protect those who trust you. You keep them safe from slander and lies. Be strong, let your heart take courage, all you who trust in the Lord
I trust in you, Lord. My life is in your hands

Listen

Romans 1.8-16: I thank God for the way people everywhere speak of your faith. I never fail to mention you in my prayers. I pray for the opportunity to visit you if God wills. I long to see you to encourage you and to be encouraged by you. For I am not ashamed of the Good News. It is the power of God saving everyone who has faith, Jews first then everyone else
Jesus, help me to pray for others the way Paul prayed for others

Listen

John 1.5, 9-34: John the Baptist was sent by God as a witness to the people about the presence of the Word among them. When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied "I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a straight way for the Lord". When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the Word) before I was born. I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. He will baptize people with the Holy Spirit.  He is the Chosen One of God".
Jesus, lamb of God, Chosen One of God, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The job of every Christian is to point out Jesus to others ... no matter what our circumstances or situation.

Sad W/App last night re HK man with psychiatric record who is soon to be executed in China for drug trafficking:
Hi Fr. John, I want to let you know that our appeal for ..... was unsuccessful. His uncle got a call this past week informing them that October 28 is the last day his family can see ....., so the old parents are preparing to travel to Shenzhen in the first week of October for a 21-week quarantine. The parents are quite devastated. His lawyer in China has not received any letter from the HK Department of Justice as a result of our attempt to appeal, so they are checking on it. But it is unlikely that the decision to execute him will change
JESUS, PLEASE HELP THAT MAN!!!

Numbers 21-22: As the Israelites continued their journey, a number of kings did battle with them. One of these was Og, king of Bashan. God said to Moses: "Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your power". Israel then easily defeated Og and occupied his land. The king of Moab also wanted to attack the Israelites, but before attacking, he consulted Balaam son of Beor who was a type of prophet and could see the future. Several times the king asked Balaam to curse the Israelites, but each time he blessed them, because this is what God told him to do: "You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed". The king then summoned Balaam to his presence. Balaam began his journey to the king, travelling on a donkey. God sent an angel with a sword to block Balaam's way. The donkey could see the angel, so she left the road to make a detour. Balaam hit her and made her return to the road. On the road the donkey again saw the angel and just lay down on the road. Balaam was very angry and hit her with a stick. Then God made the donkey speak: "Why did you hit me? Haven't I always been faithful to you?"
God now opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel with a sword. Balaam realized that the donkey had saved his life. The angel then told Balaam to continue his journey but to say to the king only what God said to say.

Dear God, please stop people from being cruel to animals

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

Romans 1.1-7: From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, who has been called to be an apostle, and specially chosen to preach the Good News. This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took, was a descendant of David. This news is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, by his resurrection from the dead, proved he was the Son of God. From him I received my mission to preach the obedience of faith to non-Jewish nations. You are one of these nations. You belong to Jesus Christ. To you who are God's beloved friends in Rome, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give grace and peace
Jesus, Son of God, may all nations know and love you

Listen

John 1.1-14: From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word. But to everyone who did accept him, he gave power to become children of God
Jesus, please help me understand how you are the Word-made-flesh

c.f. readings for Sunday 26
Numbers 11:
Some of the Israelites started complaining about not having meat to eat, only manna. So God arranged for quails to land near the camp and be easily caught for food. About this time Moses selected seventy men to help him care for the people. God blessed the seventy men and they began to prophesy. Moses said "I wish the whole people of God could be prophets, and God would give his Spirit to them all".
Dear God, please pour out your Holy Spirit  on the whole human family

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

 Listen

James 5.1-6: Are you rich and powerful? Then start weeping for the miseries that are coming your way. Your wealth is rotting, your clothes are being eaten by moths. And your body also will soon be corroding in a burning fire. You cheated your workers. You lived a life of luxury without any care for people who were suffering. You condemned and killed the innocent
Jesus, give uncaring rich and powerful people a change of heart

 Listen

Mark 9.38-41: Jesus' apostle John, said "Master, we saw a man who is not one of our group casting out devils in your name. Because he was not one of us, we tried to stop him". Jesus said "You must not stop him. No one who works a miracle in my name is going to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us. In fact, even someone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to me,  will be rewarded".
Jesus, please help me stop dividing people into "us and them"

Reflection on the above readings: May we change from an "us and them" mentality to a "we" mentality

Numbers 21: In order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline. But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the people and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live.
Jesus' words (John 3.13): "The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".

My recording of this reading

Psalm 28: To you, O Lord, I call, my rock, hear me. If you do not heed, I shall become like people in the grave. Lord, you are my strength and my shield. In you my heart trusts. Thank you, Lord, for so often hearing my prayer. I will always thank and praise you. You are the strength of your people Israel. Save your people. Be our shepherd and carry us for ever.
Lord, please help people who are in big danger today

Listen

Acts 28.17-31: Not long after his arrival in Rome, Paul had a meeting with a large number of Jews. The meeting went from early morning until evening. Paul talked to them about the kingdom of God. He tried to help them believe in Jesus. Some accepted Jesus. Paul was in detention for two years, in his own rented house. He welcomed everyone who came to visit him.  With boldness and without hindrance, he taught people about the Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus, thank you for the Acts of the Apostles. May I help more people know and love you, like Paul

Listen

Luke 24.50-53: Jesus then took his disciples out of Jerusalem to the village of Bethany. Lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
As he blessed them, he was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him, then went back to Jerusalem full of joy. They were continually in the Temple praising God.

Jesus, thank you for the Gospel of Luke. Please increase my faith in you as the One who came down from heaven, and went back to heaven

Numbers 20: The Israelites arrived at Kadesh in the desert of Zin. They had no water, and complained bitterly to Moses and Aaron. Moses and Aaron pleaded with God for help. God told Moses to hit a rock with a branch and in this way, order the rock to give water. Water did in fact flow when Moses hit the rock, but through lack of faith, Moses hit it twice. So God said to Moses and Aaron: "Because you did not fully trust me, therefore you will not lead the people to the promised land". When the Israelites moved on from Kadesh, they asked the Edomites for permission to go through their land. But the Edomites refused this request. Later, on Mount Hor, Aaron died and was succeeded as High Priest by his son Eleazar
Dear God, please increase our trust in you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you.

Listen

Acts 28.11-16: After three months we set sail in a ship going to Italy. Our trip took us to Syracuse, Rhegium and Puteoli before we arrived in Rome. Believers in Rome heard of Paul's arrival and came to meet us. When Paul saw them, he thanked God with all his heart. Paul was allowed to stay in lodgings of his own, with a soldier to guard him
Jesus, thank you helping Paul reach
Rome safely. Thank you for protecting me on all my journeys

Listen

Luke 24.36-49: The disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this power from on high"
Jesus,  increase my faith in your resurrection, and open my mind to  understand the Bible better

Yesterday I spent about 5 hours at Lai Chi Kok men's prison where I chatted with several hundred inmates and for many of them handed in Bibles and booklets .... after which I went to nearby Sham Shui Po to buy some electrical equipment for the Dr Jesus Centre from this shop run by a most friendly family. If you go to the shop and say you came at Fr John's recommendation, I am sure they will give you a special welcome!

Speaking of friendly shops: MercyHK's second hand eco shop at 191 Temple Street needs more volunteers to look after the sales counter. More info from Eddie Chan: 9849 8546

Everything's a miracle!

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.

Acts 28.1-10: We were on the island of Malta. The local people were really kind to us. They made us welcome. They lit a huge fire because the weather was cold and rain was falling. Paul collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire, when a snake bit his hand and held on. The locals expected him to die. But he just shook the snake into the fire. He was ok. The local Roman governor kindly gave us hospitality for three days. The governor's father was very sick in bed with fever and dysentery. He was healed when Paul prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick, came and got healed

I wish all dear readers a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

I spent much of yesterday at Tai Lam women's prison ... as did 89(!) year old Cardinal Joseph Zen. I'm not sure if I'll get to 89 ... much less still be visiting prisons at that age!

From the prison I went to a restaurant in the building where Camay and her family live. One week ago her life was in danger in ICU (after a clash of medicines caused problems) ... but last night she was sitting at table having coke and sausage! See her FB update here!

Numbers 18: God's words to Aaron: "You and your sons will be priests. You will lead the liturgy and carry out the duties of your priesthood. You will have no portion of the land as your own. I myself will be your portion. When your sons receive the people's tithes, they must give you for a special offering a tithe of the tithes."
Dear God, please help priests to be good and not greedy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

Listen

Acts 27.39-44: The next day they could see land: a bay with a beach. They tried to reach the beach, but the ship ran aground on a reef and began to break up. The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to stop them from escaping, but Julius would not allow this. Some people swam. Some used pieces of wreckage. All of them got to shore safely
Jesus, help people in danger of shipwreck today

Listen

Luke 24.13-35: That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth,  and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive". Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal, he blessed  some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread
Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible

Yesterday afternoon I went on a shopping expedition to Tsim Sha Tsui, beginning with a visit to Rosary Church, then the HKMA to enrol a prisoner in a course, then to a bookstore to get some items for prisoners, then to Mannings in Jordan to collect some "Ensure Plus" for a prisoner. I am hoping to visit a prison today and another one tomorrow.

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

c.f. readings for Feast of St Matthew
Isaiah 51-52:
Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.

My recording of this reading

Psalm  117:
O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Recording

Ephesians 4.1-16: I implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall become more and more like Christ. We are parts of the Body of Christ. Christ is the head. Each part must do its bit to keep the Body healthy and growing in love.
Jesus, help me understand how the Church is your Body

Recording

Matthew 9.9-13: One day when Jesus was walking past a customs house he said to a tax collector named Matthew "Follow me". Matthew got up and followed Jesus. Matthew invited Jesus and Jesus' friends to a dinner in his house. Some tax collectors and "bad" people sat at Jesus' table. Religious leaders saw this and complained to Jesus' friends "Why does your master eat with tax collectors and bad people?" Jesus' answer was "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and think about the Bible words 'What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'. I have a special concern for rejects and down-and-outs."
Jesus, please help religious leaders in today's world to care more about people who are rejected by society
