I spent most of yesterday on office jobs, apart from a brief visit to the High Court to hand in a mitigation letter. One of the office jobs was preparing material that might help 50 year old mentally disordered HK man Wu Chu Man avoid execution before the end of the month in China, for drug trafficking. Deuteronomy 10: Moses continued his speech to the people: "And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you? Only this: to love and honor the Lord, to follow all his ways, to serve him with all your heart and all your soul, to keep the commandments and laws of the Lord that for your good I set before you today. Circumcise your heart and be obstinate no longer. The Lord your God is great and good. He it is you must praise, he is your God. It is he who sees justice done for the orphan and widow, who loves the stranger and gives him food and clothing. You too must love the stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt."
Dear Lord, please help me love you as I should

My recording of this reading

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me better understand the meaning of life

Listen

Romans 8.26-29: When we are not sure of what to say in prayer, we ask the Spirit to pray in us. We know that by turning everything to their good, God blesses everyone who loves him. God the Father wants us to become living images of his Son, so that his Son will be the eldest of many brothers and sisters
Jesus, brother Jesus, please help me to be more like you

Listen

John 6.1-15: Near the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so many sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples. Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples "How can we feed so many people?" The disciple Andrew said "There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. But what good is that for such a huge crowd?" Jesus said "Make the people sit down". The crowd of about 20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people. He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great prophet".  Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others, just as you blessed the loaves and fish

Feast of Saint Luke  ("Luke"/"Acts")

Luke 1: Dear Friend of God, there are already many reports written about Jesus. These reports come from people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News. After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a report, so that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News
Jesus, help me understand your Good News

Recording of this reading

Acts 1: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the Gospel of Luke) I wrote about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God. He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit"
Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, increase your influence in my life

c.f. readings for Sunday 29

Isaiah 52-53: See, my servant will prosper, he shall be lifted up and exalted. As the crowds were appalled on seeing him - so disfigured did he look - so will the crowds be astonished at him, for they will see something that has never happened before. Without beauty, without majesty,  we saw him. He was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. He was despised and we took no account of him. And yet ours were the sufferings he bore, ours the sorrows he carried. He was pierced through for our faults, crushed for our sins. On him lies a punishment that brings us peace, and through his wounds we are healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, and the Lord burdened him with our sins. Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly,
never opening his mouth. He let himself be taken for a sinner, and all the time he was suffering and praying for sinners.

Jesus, these words refer to you. Thank you for all you suffered to redeem the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

Listen

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. He himself was tempted in every way, but did not sin. Let us be confident in approaching his throne of grace. He will give us grace when we are in need of help
Jesus, our high priest, help me when I'm weak

Listen

Mark 10.35-45: The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left". Jesus said to his cousins James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left". The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor.  So Jesus said to them all  "In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve,
and to give my life as a ransom for the world"

Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them

Deuteronomy 9: Moses continued his speech to the people: "Listen, Israel, you are soon to cross the Jordan River, to dispossess nations greater and stronger than yourself. Know that the Lord your God will go in front of you. So often in the past you forgot the Lord. So often you were rebels and did not obey the Lord. In future you must rebel no more.
Dear Lord, please don't let me ever rebel against you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe
Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Listen

Romans 8.14-21: Everyone moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's language to speak to God tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since we are God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his suffering so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be compared with the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation looks forward to sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality
Abba, Father, may everyone love and honor you. Help everyone get to heaven

Listen

John 5.36-46: Jesus said to the religious leaders "The healing and teaching my Father has given me to do, testify that the Father sent me. You study the Scriptures, realizing that in them there is the message of life. Now these same Scriptures focus on me, and yet you refuse to come to me for life. If you really believe what Moses wrote, you would believe in me, since it was I that he was writing about".
Jesus, please help me understand how everything in the Bible is related to you. Help me understand that "ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of you"

Fri Oct 15

Apologies for not mentioning on yesterday's menu that yesterday was a holiday in HK for the Chung Yeung Festival. My excuse: many things were happening 2 nights ago ... especially an urgent late night accommodation case ... and I got distracted. Yesterday with around 80 parishioners I was at the Cheung Yeung 9am Mass at St Paul's Parish Yau Ma Tei.

After Mass yesterday I went to Lai Chi Kok men's prison for the third day in a row! Something I haven't done for many years. I used to go there 4 and sometimes 5 days a week .... but that's not possible now with extra commitments. Was possible the past 3 days thanks to typhoon signal no. 8 cancelling activities ... and a public holiday. And see below!

Deuteronomy 8: Moses continued his speech to the people: "Remember how the Lord your God led you for 40 years in the wilderness,
to humble you, to test you, to know your inmost heart - whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he fed you with manna, to make you understand that we do not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Learn from this that the Lord your God was training you as a man trains his child. Keep the commandments of the Lord your God.
Follow his ways and reverence him. When you become prosperous in the land that God is giving you, do not become proud and say your own efforts have brought you success. Take care and do not forget the Lord your God
.

Dear Lord, don't let me ever forget all you have done for me

My recording of this reading

Psalm 46: God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Listen

Romans 8.9-13: You are on God's team. God the Father is the manager. Jesus is the captain. The Holy Spirit is the coach, a coach living in your heart. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead, is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will help you live a risen life. By the grace of the Holy Spirit you can stop doing bad things
Holy Spirit of Jesus, Holy Spirit of the Father, fall afresh on me!

Listen

John 5.17-30: Jesus said to the religious leaders "My Father goes on working, and so do I.  Whoever refuses honor to the Son, refuses honor to the Father who sent him. The Father judges no one. He has entrusted all judgement to the Son. A time will come  when the dead will leave their graves at the sound of the Son's voice. Those who did good, will rise again to life. Those who did evil, will face condemnation".
Jesus, some day you are going to be my judge. On that day may I hear you say "I was hungry, and you gave me food etc"  (Matthew 25. 31 - 46)

Deuteronomy 7Moses continued his speech to the people: "You are a people consecrated to the Lord your God. It is you that the Lord our God has chosen to be his very own people out of all the peoples on the earth. But know this: if the Lord set his heart on you and chose you, it was not because you outnumbered other peoples. In fact you were the least of all peoples. It was for love of you and to keep his promise to our ancestors that the Lord chose you. Listen then to these ordinances, be true to them and observe them, and in return the Lord your God will be true to you.

He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your body and the produce of your soil, your corn, your wine, your oil, the issue of your cattle, the young of your flock. No man or woman among will shall be barren, no male or female of your beasts infertile. The Lord will keep all sickness far from you. Be loyal then to the Lord and have nothing to do with the religious practices of the people you will conquer
.

Dear God, please help us to love you as we should

Psalms 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

Romans 7.14-25Even though I'm on God's team, I don't always play as well as I should. At times I cannot understand my behavior.
I fail to do good things, and I find myself doing bad things. It's as if there is a battle going on inside me. In my heart I dearly love God,
but my will is weak, and I do things that I know are wrong. Who can help me keep going? Who can fix up things in my life? Jesus can. He is the one who sorts out things in my life, and changes chaos into order, by the working of the Holy Spirit

Jesus, my life is in your hands. Please arrange my life the way you want to

John 5.1-14: Jesus again went up to Jerusalem for a Jewish festival. In a building near the Sheep Gate, he saw many sick people. One paralyzed man had been ill for 38 yearsJesus said to him "Do you want to be well again? Get up, pick up your bed and walk". The man was healed at once. He picked up his bed and walked away. After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said to him "Now that you are well, do not sin any more"
Jesus, if my sickness is due to some sin, please forgive me and heal me

Deuteronomy 6: Moses continued his speech to the people: "Listen Israel. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. Let these words I urge on you today be written on your heart. You shall repeat them to your children and say them when you are resting in your house or going for a walk, when you are lying down and when you get up. You shall fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a circlet. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates"

Jesus, please help me remember I'm on your team

John 4.46-53: Jesus went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed water into wine. In Cana there was a royal official whose son was dying in his home in the town of Capernaum. The official asked Jesus to go to his home and cure his son. "Sir", he said to Jesus, "come to my house before my child dies". Jesus replied "Go home. Your son will live". The official believed Jesus and started his journey home. While on the journey,  he was met by his servants who told him the boy was alive and well.  "The fever left him yesterday, they said, "at 1pm". The father realized that this was the exact time when Jesus had said "Your son will live".  The official and all his household then believed in Jesus
