Ruth 1: In the days of the judges, there was famine in the land. Because of the famine, a man from Bethlehem named Elimelech moved to Moab. Elimelech took with him his wife Naomi and his two sons. Elimelech died. The two sons married Moabite women: Orpah and Ruth. But then the two sons also died. Naomi was heart-broken. She had lost her husband and two sons. She decided to return to Bethlehem and told her daughters-in-law to go back to their own homes. Orpah went back to her people. But Ruth with great loyalty and love chose to go with Naomi. Ruth said: "Wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you live, I will live. Your people shall be my people. Your God shall be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried."
Dear God, in time of trouble, please help people to be loyal and kind to each other

Psalm 111: I will thank the Lord with all my heart. Great are the works of the Lord, to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever. The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all times. He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Dear Lord, please help me to love and honor you every day

Galatians 1.1-7: To the church of Galatia, from Paul, an apostle appointed not by man  but by Jesus Christ. Trouble makers among you have changed the Good News. I am astonished that you have begun following their false version of the Good News
Jesus, don't let people be deceived by anyone who waters down or changes your Good News

John 19.4-16: Pilate now put Jesus on display and again told the leaders "I find no case against him". The leaders replied "According to our Law he must die, since he claims to be the Son of God. If you free him, you are no friend of the Roman Emperor". Eventually Pilate gave in to them and handed Jesus over to be crucified
Jesus, please help all judges to stand up for the truth and not make false judgments

Psalms 109, 110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.

John 19.1-3: Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged. The soldiers used thorns to make a crown and pushed this into Jesus' head. They dressed him in a purple cloak and mocked him saying "Hail, king of the Jews". They slapped him in the face
Jesus, scourged and made fun of, please help me not  to hurt anyone by my words or actions

Reflection on the above readings: Modern media report all the gory details of tragedies. Imagine how they would report the scourging of Jesus. One sign that the Gospels are genuine is that they do not give gory details about the scourging of Jesus.

Isaiah 36-40: "Console my people, console them" says the Lord. A voice cries out "Prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord. Make a straight highway for our God across every desert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all people will see the Lord's glory." Go up on a high mountain, joyful messenger to Zion. Shout with a loud voice, joyful messenger to Jerusalem. Shout to the towns of Judah "Here is your God".
Lord, please help me prepare your way into my heart, into  my family, into my world

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. God knows how much I miss you. I love you as Christ Jesus loves you. Luke 3.1-6: In the 15th year of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod was ruler of Galilee and during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, God's message entered the heart of John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. John went through the whole Jordan River area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. This had been foretold by the prophet Isaiah when he said "A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord"
Jesus, help us prepare your way, like John

Reflection on the above readings:  God's rescuing/saving help is available 24/7. So what is stopping people addicted to drugs or other things from receiving that help? Mountains of delusion need to be flattened .... valleys of depression/fear need to be filled in. And how can this be done? Bit like asking a drowning person to save themselves? Persons themselves need to be as honest as they can with God ... and usually someone else needs to help prepare a way for the Lord to enter their hearts. How prepare? By prayer/friendship/compassion and practical help.

Judges 16: Samson went to Gaza and entered the house of a prostitute. The men of Gaza tried to capture Samson but he eluded them. Samson then fell in love with a woman called Delilah. The Philistine leaders pressured Delilah to find out the secret of Samson's great strength. Day after day Delilah pestered Samson until he told her his secret: "A razor has never touched my head, because I have been specially dedicated to God from my birth. If my hair is cut, I will lose my strength." Delilah then cut Samson's hair while he was asleep
and called the Philistines to capture him. The Philistines bound Samson, put out his eyes. and chained him in a prison in Gaza. But in prison, Samson's hair began to grow again. The Philistines held a special ceremony in a large building to celebrate the capture of Samson. They paraded Samson at the ceremony and then made him stand between two pillars. Samson prayed to God for strength one more time and the Lord heard his prayer. He then used his great strength to pull down the main pillars supporting the building. In this way, at his death, Samson killed more Philistines than before he went to prison.

Dear Lord, you once gave special strength to Samson. Please give me strength to face the battles of life.

This should prove to you that I am a genuine apostle, not after money or fame or power. It is you I want, not your possessions

John 18.28-40:
The religious leaders took Jesus to the Roman governor, Pilate. Pilate asked Jesus "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus replied "My kingdom is not a kingdom of this world. But I am a king. After further questioning, Pilate said to the leaders "I find no case against him, so how about I release him according to the custom of releasing one prisoner at Passover? At this the leaders shouted "Not this man, but Barabbas". Barabbas was a bandit

Fri Dec 3

Over the past few weeks, at the direction of the Buildings Department, many shops in Temple Street have removed name boards from their front entrances ... "illegal structures". Last night, at the arrangement of our landlord, the name board of MercyHK's second hand shop also was removed .... hopefully to be replaced by a "legal structure" a.s.a.p. (which might be several months after waiting for govt permission etc). Building Dept has chosen a strange time to carry out this order in Temple Street when virtually every business is struggling to make ends meet

This is the page of Jonas, an artist I met two nights ago at the opening of an art exhibition to support MercyHK

469 years ago today, in 1552, on a remote island off the coast of China, Saint Francis Xavier died. He could see China some 14km across the sea, but could not enter it. In the months before he died, he offered up his suffering that someone else might follow him and enter China. On October 6, 1552, Matteo Ricci was born in Italy. Xavier's prayer was answered two months before he died. With hindsight, we can see that for the spread of the Gospel in China, Ricci's cultural approach was a more suitable missionary method than Xavier's direct evangelisation. Maybe this is why God allowed Xavier to leave the scene without entering China.

Xavier died on the island today known as Shangchuan
I've been privileged to visit there a number of  times:
e.g. 1993 & 2005. But only after checking above Wiki article did I know that the name "Shangchuan" means "Saint John"!

Judges 15: When Samson found out his wife had been given to someone else he took his revenge on the Philistines by setting fire to their crops. The Philistines then attacked the land of Judah, trying to capture Samson. To avoid war with the Philistines,
the men of Judah bound Samson with ropes and handed him over to the Philistines. But as the Philistines approached him,
Samson was filled with the spirit of the Lord and broke free from the ropes. He saw a dead donkey's jawbone on the ground
and used this to strike down many Philistines before making his escape. Samson was judge in Israel for 20 years.

Dear Lord, you once gave strength to Samson. Please give me strength to face the battles of life.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south.

Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.

Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help.
He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons.

Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

2 Corinthians 8.9 - 9.7: Remember how generous the Lord Jesus was. He was rich, but he became poor for our sake, to make us rich. So we also should help people who are poor. If we have extra we should help people who don't have enough. Maybe some day, the same poor people will be rich, and we will be poor, and they will help us. And don't forget, God loves a cheerful giver
Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

John 18.19-27: The main religious leader interrogated Jesus about his teaching. Jesus told him "I have spoken openly in prayer halls and in the Temple. I have said nothing in secret. The people can tell you what I said". At these words, one of the guards slapped Jesus in the face, saying "Don't speak to the leader like that". Jesus replied "If I said  something wrong, point it out. But if there was nothing wrong with my words, why did you hit me?" Meanwhile Peter was outside in the courtyard, keeping warm by a fire. Three times he was asked by different people if he was a disciple of Jesus. Three times he replied "I am not". After his third denial, a rooster crowed

Judges 14Samson wanted to marry a Philistine woman, even though custom required he marry an Israelite. On his way to visit the woman in Philistine territory, Samson was confronted by a young lion. The spirit of the Lord filled Samson and he tore the lion to pieces with his bare hands. On his next visit to the woman's home,  Samson saw that in the carcass of the dead lion
there was a swarm of bees, and honey. The people of the village made a wedding feast for 7 days. But they were scared of Samson so they assigned 30 men to stay with him. Samson challenged them to answer a riddle: if they got the right answer before the 7 days were over, he would give them 30 pieces of silver and 30 festal robes. But if they failed to get the right answer, they had to give Samson 30 pieces of silver and 30 robes. They agreed to the challenge. Samson stated his riddle: "Out of the eater came what is eaten, out of the strong came what is sweet".

Three days went by and they could not solve the riddle. So they asked Samson's wife to find out the answer. Day after day she pestered Samson with pleading and tears until, on the 7th day, he told her. She then told the men. The men then said to Samson: "What is sweeter than honey, and what is stronger than a lion?" Samson then went to a nearby Philistine town and killed 30 men there. He took their robes and gave them to the 30 wedding feast guests. Full of anger, he stormed out of the village and returned to his parents' house. His wife was then given to the companion  who had been his best man.

Dear God, please help me control my anger

Psalm 106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right, who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt, they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them. But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour, God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.

John 18.1-11: After their Last Supper, Jesus and his disciples went to a garden near the Kedron valley. Judas knew they would be there, since they had often gathered there. Let these other men go free". The group then arrested Jesus and bound him. They took him to the religious leaders

Judges 12-13: Jephthah was judge in Israel for 6 years. For the following 25 years, Ibzan (7 years), Elon (10 years) and Abdon  (8 years) were judges. After these judges, the Israelites again were unfaithful to the Lord and so they were oppressed by the Philistines for 40 years. It was then that the angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah's wife and said to her: "You are barren and have had no child. But you will soon conceive and bear a son. No razor is to touch his head, for he shall be dedicated to the Lord from his mother's womb. It is he who will rescue Israel from the Philistines". The woman gave birth to a son and called him Samson. The child grew and the Lord blessed him.
Dear Lord, please bless all barren women

2 Corinthians 4.8 - 5.1: We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered. We see no answer to our problems, but never despair. Even though our bodies are aging and decaying, our hearts are renewed day by day. Our troubles seem great now, but they don't stand comparison with the eternal glory coming soon. When the temporary tent that we live in here on earth is folded up, we will move to an everlasting house built by God for us in heaven
Jesus, help me remember Heaven - especially when life gets tough

John 17.1-21: After saying many things to his disciples at the meal, Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed "Father, my time has come. Give eternal life to everyone you have entrusted to me. Eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I have glorified you on earth, and finished the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world existed. Protect those you have given me. Protect them from Satan. Consecrate them in the truth. As you sent me into the world, so I am sending them into the world. May all my followers be united, so that the world will believe it was you who sent me"
Jesus, please protect our world from lies and deception. Please bless people who witness to the truth in difficult situations

Reflection on the above readings: Truth these days has to be filtered out from a great deal that is not true. e.g.  I trust The Guardian on most issues, but its strong pro-abortion policy is very disappointing
