Tues Dec 14

11 days to Christmas! If we think we have many problems, let's remember what Jesus' mother and her husband were going through 2,000 years ago at this time .... a donkey journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem ... with Mary soon to give birth .... and then nowhere to stay in Bethlehem

Yesterday morning I stood for 90 minutes at the registry counter of the Metropolitan (formerly Open) University to enrol 6 prisoners for correspondence courses. For some of the applicants their chosen course was not available or already full ... so I had to choose another course for them. At one stage my trusty Hang Seng EPS card refused to work. God bless the patience of the young guy who processed the applications (and the patience of the old feller he was serving)!

Disturbing article: Richest 1% take 38% of global wealth while bottom half get 2%

1 Samuel 4: Around this time, the Philistines defeated the Israelites in a battle. The Israelites then went to Shiloh and took the Sacred Chest of the Lord. They took the Sacred Chest into battle with them but the Chest was captured by the Philistines. In the same battle, Eli's two sons were killed. When Eli heard that his sons were dead and that the Sacred Chest had been captured, he fell backwards off his seat, his neck was broken, and he died.
Dear God, please don't let me cause unhappiness for my family

Psalm 117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever. May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Galatians 3.26-28: Through faith in Christ Jesus, you are children of God. When you were baptized, you entered into a special relationship of friendship with Christ. This relationship cancels out old labels like Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. These old labels have been replaced by a new one hanging around your heart: Made in Christ
Jesus, help me better understand our relationship

Matthew 1.1-17 - the family tree of Jesus, Matthew's list:

1:1 A genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham:

1:2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

1:3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, Tamar being their mother, Perez was the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,

1:4 Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,

1:5 Salmon was the father of Boaz, Rahab being his mother, Boaz was the father of Obed, Ruth being his mother, Obed was the father of Jesse;

1:6 and Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,

1:7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,

1:8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Azariah,

1:9 Azariah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

1:10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah;

1:11 and Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers. Then the deportation to Babylon took place.

1:12 After the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

1:13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,

1:14 Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud,

1:15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob;

1:17 The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.

Reflection: Jewish ancestor lists, like those in many other ancient countries, never mentioned women. But Matthew mentions five women, two or maybe three of them not Jewish (Rahab, Ruth .... Uriah's wife).

Mon Dec 13

Yesterday afternoon at St Alfred's Church, Tai Wai, I attended the diaconate ordination Mass of Bro. Dominic Fung King Ho O.M.I. ... the very first ordination for HK's new Catholic leader Bishop Stephen Chow Sau Yan S.J. Please God Dominic will be ordained a priest in about 6 months time.

For my homily at Mass yesterday morning at Yau Ma Tei Parish I used a SCMP video about the beautiful work of the Gingko Restaurant in YMT ... which gives out more than 200 free meals each day to needy people and which recently opened a shop at 11 Nanking Street, Jordan to process clothing for needy people. Scroll down here for link to video (Cantonese, with English subtitles). Gingko is putting into practice the advice of John the Baptist in yesterday's Gospel: give clothing and food to the needy.

Samuel 3: One day when the boy Samuel was serving in the temple, the Lord called to him "Samuel, Samuel." The boy thought it was the old priest Eli calling to him so he ran to Eli and said "Here I am." Eli replied "I did not call you." Two more times the Lord called. Both times the boy went to Eli. Eli now realized it was the Lord calling Samuel.  Eli told Samuel to say "Speak Lord, your servant is listening" the next time he heard the voice. The Lord told Samuel that Eli's family would be punished for the bad things they had done. The people quickly found out that the Lord was with Samuel and that Samuel was the Lord's prophet.
Dear Lord, please help me to listen to your voice, your voice in the Bible, in my conscience and in other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Galatians 2.16-20: What makes us God's friends is not obedience to the Law, but faith in Jesus Christ I have been crucified with Christ, and I live now, not with my own life, but with the life of Christ who lives in me. The life I now live in this body, I live in faith: faith in the Son of God who loved me and who sacrificed himself for my sake
Jesus, help me understand how you live in me, and I live in you

Reflection: Matthew is writing for Jewish readers ... and wants to stress that Jesus is the Messiah, a descendant of King David. In Hebrew, each letter has a numerical value. The three characters making the name David have a numerical value of 14 .... which is why Matthew's family tree stresses the number 14! ... Matthew is using numbers to reinforce the message that Jesus is a descendant of David!

Beautiful Advent song: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, and free captive Israel (... from captivity to drugs/virus etc!)

187: Yesterday afternoon's usual 3pm prayer meeting to pray for healing was attended by about 20 people ... another beautiful experience.

Update from Camay with special report from yesterday's prayer meeting. And ....thank you Camay and Yuki for new fans in the Dr Jesus Centre! Now we don't have to use air con so much.

c.f. Readings for "Advent 3"

Zephaniah 3.14-18:

Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem! The Lord has repealed your sentence; he has driven your enemies away. The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst; you have no more evil to fear. When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem: Zion, have no fear, do not let your hands fall limp. The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult with joy over you, he will renew you by his love; he will dance with shouts of joy for you as on a day of festival.

My recording of this reading

And the Father Will Dance - Song

Isaiah 12:

Truly, God is my salvation, I trust, I shall not fear. For the Lord is my strength, my song, he became my saviour. With joy you will draw water  from the wells of salvation. Give thanks to the Lord, give praise to his name! Make his mighty deeds known to the peoples! Declare the greatness of his name. Sing a psalm to the Lord for he has done glorious deeds; make them known to all the earth! People of Zion, sing and shout for joy, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Philippians 4.4-9: I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord. Let your tolerance be evident to everyone. If there is anything you need, with prayer and thanksgiving ask God for it. Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that is worthwhile. Then the God of peace will be with you
Jesus, please fill my mind with good things

Luke 3.10-14: People asked John the Baptist how they should reform their lives. He replied: "If anyone has extra clothing, share with people who have none. If anyone has plenty to eat, share with people who have nothing". Tax collectors asked John what they should do. He replied "Don't cheat anyone". Soldiers asked him "What about us? What must we do?" He replied "No bullying. No extortion. Be content with your pay"
Jesus, what about me? What should I do?

Reflection on the above readings:  Joy and happiness are a strong theme in the readings of Advent 3 each year. And sharing with and caring for others is one practical way of experiencing that joy in our lives .... as Jesus said "There is more happiness in giving than in receiving" (Acts 20.35)

1 Samuel 2: Hannah praised God for giving her a child: "My heart rejoices in the Lord. The Lord, our fortress, is holy. Don't speak proudly, for the Lord knows what's in our hearts. The Lord breaks the power of the strong. He gives strength and victory to the weak.
He blesses the barren woman. The Lord raises the poor from the dust, and gives them a seat of honor with princes. The Lord guards the steps of good people, but scatters bad people in their pride." The Lord blessed Hannah and she gave birth to three more sons and two daughters. Her son Samuel grew up in the temple. The temple priest at that time was Eli. But Eli's sons were bad men. They stole the people's offerings to the Lord.

Dear God, please bless good people like Hannah, and please help bad people like Eli's sons to stop being bad

Psalms 114-115: When Israel came out of Egypt, Jacob's descendents from an alien people, Judah became the Lord's temple, Israel became his kingdom. Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. To you may the Lord grant increase, to you and all your children. May you be blessed by the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth
Thank you, Lord, for all your blessings

Galatians 2.11-14: Not long after this, when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, since he was in the wrong. He had been accustomed to eating with non-Jews, but when some friends of James arrived, people who insisted that all believers should be circumcised, he kept away from the non-Jews. When I saw that Peter was not respecting the true meaning of the Good News, I said to him in front of everyone "You have no right to make non-Jews adopt Jewish customs"

John 19.31-37: The next day was the Passover. To prevent the bodies remaining on the crosses during the Passover, the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. Instead of breaking  his legs, they pierced his side with a spear.  Immediately there came out blood and water. And so the Scriptures were fulfilled "Not one of his bones will be broken" and "They will look on the one they have pierced"
Jesus, please help me understand how blood and water are symbols of the Eucharist and Baptism

1 Samuel 1: Each year, Elkanah and his two wives Hannah and Peninnah,  went to Shiloh to worship the Lord. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was barren. Each year at the temple, Peninnah would taunt Hannah because she was barren. One year at the temple, Hannah prayed in great distress: "God, if you give me a child, I will dedicate him to you". Not long after, Hannah conceived a son whom she called "Samuel". When Samuel was weaned, she took him to the temple and gave him to the priest there to serve the Lord for the rest of his life.

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Galatians 2.1-9: 14 years after that first visit, I again went to Jerusalem, with Barnabas and Titus. I explained to the Christian leaders how I had been proclaiming the Good News to non-Jews. James, Peter and John shook hands with us as a sign of partnership. We were to preach to the non-Jews, and they to the Jews
Jesus, please help all Christians to avoid disunity

John 19.25-30: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Seeing his mother and John the apostle standing near her, Jesus said to his mother "He is your son". Then to John he said "She is your mother".  From that moment, John regarded Mary as his own mother. Jesus said "My work is finished". Then he bowed his head and died

Ruth 2: Naomi and Ruth arrived in Bethlehem at the time of the barley harvest. Ruth went to the fields to look for left-over ears of corn. She came to the attention of Boaz, Elimelech's clansman. Boaz was a kind man and he told the men harvesting his crop to let Ruth take some sheaves of corn, not just left-overs. As one of Naomi's closest relatives, Boaz was in a group of several men from which one man was required by law to marry Ruth and produce children for Elimelech

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Galatians 1.11-24: The Good News I preach is not a human message. It is something I received from Jesus Christ. I used to persecute the church, but then God called me to follow Jesus. Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary by her mother Anne

This feast reminds us that it is possible to defeat evil - e.g. the evil of drugs. Drug taking/trafficking can be stopped. Whenever evil wins a battle, it can still lose the war. From defeats by evil, greater goodness than previously thought possible, can become possible. Beautiful prayer for today by Pope Francis and Beautiful reflection for today by Fr Louis Lougen O.M.I.

I spent a large part of yesterday at Lai Chi Kok men's prison ... visiting the hospital section as well as several other sections. A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came  and to dust you will return." The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Ephesians 1: Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all the spiritual blessings of heaven in Christ. Before the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and spotless, and to live through love in his presence, determining that we should become his adopted children, the people who would put their hope in Christ before he came.
God our Father, before Mary was born, you chose her to be Jesus' mother. Before I was born, you  chose me to be a brother/sister of Jesus

Luke 1: In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God.  You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb
