Tues Dec 14

days to Christmas! If we think we have
many problems, let's remember what Jesus' mother and her husband were going
through 2,000 years ago at this time .... a donkey journey from Nazareth to
Bethlehem ... with Mary soon to give birth .... and then nowhere to stay in
Bethlehem
Yesterday morning I stood for 90 minutes at the registry counter
of the Metropolitan (formerly Open) University to enrol 6 prisoners for
correspondence courses. For some of the applicants their chosen course was not
available or already full ... so I had to choose another course for them. At one
stage my trusty Hang Seng EPS card refused to work. God bless the patience of
the young guy who processed the applications (and the patience of the old feller
he was serving)!

Samuel 4: Around this time, the Philistines defeated the
Israelites in a battle. The Israelites then went to Shiloh and took the Sacred Chest of the Lord.
They took the Sacred Chest into battle with
them
but the Chest was captured by the Philistines. In the same battle, Eli's two sons were
killed.
When Eli heard that his sons were dead
and that the Sacred Chest had been captured,
he fell backwards off his seat, his neck was broken, and he died.
Dear God, please don't let me

Galatians
3.26-28:
Through faith in Christ Jesus, you are
children of God.
When you were baptized, you entered into a special relationship of
friendship with Christ. This relationship cancels out old labels like
Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. These old labels have
been replaced by a new one hanging around your heart: Made in Christ
Jesus, help me better understand our
relationship

Matthew 1.1-17 - the family tree of Jesus, Matthew's list:
1:1 A genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham:
1:2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
1:3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, Tamar being their mother, Perez was the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,
1:4 Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,
1:5 Salmon was the father of Boaz, Rahab being his mother, Boaz was the father of Obed, Ruth being his mother, Obed was the father of Jesse;
1:6 and Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,
1:7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,
1:8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Azariah,
1:9 Azariah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
1:10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah;
1:11 and Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers. Then the deportation to Babylon took place.
1:12 After the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
1:13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,
1:14 Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud,
1:15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob;
1:16 and Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.
1:17 The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.
Reflection: Jewish ancestor lists, like those in many other ancient countries, never mentioned women. But Matthew mentions five women, two or maybe three of them not Jewish (Rahab, Ruth .... Uriah's wife).

Yesterday afternoon at St Alfred's Church, Tai Wai, I attended the diaconate ordination Mass of Bro. Dominic Fung King Ho O.M.I. ... the very first ordination for HK's new Catholic leader Bishop Stephen Chow Sau Yan S.J. Please God Dominic will be ordained a priest in about 6 months time.
For my homily at Mass yesterday morning at Yau Ma Tei Parish I used a SCMP video about the beautiful work of the Gingko Restaurant in YMT ... which gives out more than 200 free meals each day to needy people and which recently opened a shop at 11 Nanking Street, Jordan to process clothing for needy people. Scroll down here for link to video (Cantonese, with English subtitles). Gingko is putting into practice the advice of John the Baptist in yesterday's Gospel: give clothing and food to the needy.

Samuel
3: One day when the boy Samuel was serving in the
temple,
the Lord called to him "Samuel, Samuel."
The boy thought it was the old priest Eli calling to him
so he ran to Eli and said "Here I am." Eli replied "I did not call you."
Two more times the Lord called.
Both times the boy went to Eli. Eli now realized it was the Lord calling
Samuel. Eli told Samuel to say "Speak Lord, your servant is listening"
the next time he heard the voice. The Lord told Samuel that Eli's family would
be punished
for the bad things they had done. The people quickly found out that the Lord was
with Samuel
and that Samuel was the Lord's prophet.
Dear Lord, please

Psalm
116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of
my appeal.
He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the
snares of death.
I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to
me?
The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the
death of his faithful.
Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your

Reflection: Matthew is writing for Jewish readers ... and wants to stress that Jesus is the Messiah, a descendant of King David. In Hebrew, each letter has a numerical value. The three characters making the name David have a numerical value of 14 .... which is why Matthew's family tree stresses the number 14! ... Matthew is using numbers to reinforce the message that Jesus is a descendant of David!

Zephaniah 3.14-18:
Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem! The Lord has repealed your sentence; he has driven your enemies away. The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst; you have no more evil to fear. When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem: Zion, have no fear, do not let your hands fall limp. The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult with joy over you, he will renew you by his love; he will dance with shouts of joy for you as on a day of festival.
And the Father Will Dance - Song
Isaiah 12:
Truly, God is my salvation, I trust, I shall not fear. For the Lord is my strength, my song, he became my saviour. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Give thanks to the Lord, give praise to his name! Make his mighty deeds known to the peoples! Declare the greatness of his name. Sing a psalm to the Lord for he has done glorious deeds; make them known to all the earth! People of Zion, sing and shout for joy, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Philippians
4.4-9: I
want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord. Let your tolerance be
evident to everyone. If there is anything you need, with prayer and thanksgiving
ask God for it. Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is
noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that is worthwhile. Then
the God of peace will be with you

Luke
3.10-14: People asked John the Baptist
how they should reform their lives. He replied: "If anyone has extra
clothing, share with people who have none. If anyone has plenty to eat, share
with people who have nothing". Tax collectors asked John what they should
do. He replied "Don't cheat anyone". Soldiers
asked him "What about us? What must we do?" He replied "No
bullying. No extortion. Be content with your pay"

Samuel 2: Hannah
praised God for giving her a child:
"My heart rejoices in the Lord.
The Lord, our fortress, is holy. Don't
speak proudly,
for the Lord knows what's in our hearts. The
Lord breaks the power of the strong.
He gives strength and victory to the weak.
He blesses the barren woman. The
Lord raises the poor from the dust,
and gives them a seat of honor with princes. The
Lord guards the steps of good people,
but scatters bad people in their pride." The
Lord blessed Hannah
and she gave birth to three more sons and two daughters. Her
son Samuel grew up in the temple.
The temple priest at that time was Eli. But
Eli's sons were bad men.
They stole the people's offerings to the Lord.
Dear God, please bless good

2.11-14: Not long after this, when Peter came to
Antioch, I opposed him
to his face, since he was in the wrong. He had been accustomed to eating with
non-Jews, but when some friends of James arrived, people who insisted that
all believers should be circumcised, he kept away from the non-Jews. When I saw that Peter was not respecting the

19.31-37: The next day was the Passover. To prevent the
bodies remaining on the crosses during the Passover, the soldiers broke
the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he

water. And so the Scriptures were fulfilled "Not

they have pierced"

Peninnah

Each year at the temple,
Peninnah would taunt Hannah because she was barren. One
year at the temple, Hannah prayed in great distress:

Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary by her mother Anne

This feast reminds us that it is possible to defeat evil - e.g. the evil of drugs. Drug taking/trafficking can be stopped. Whenever evil wins a battle, it can still lose the war. From defeats by evil, greater goodness than previously thought possible, can become possible. Beautiful prayer for today by Pope Francis and Beautiful reflection for today by Fr Louis Lougen O.M.I.

first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was
Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when
Adam and Eve disobeyed you
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
98: Sing
a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has
brought salvation. The
Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He
has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of
the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth,
ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of
music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let
the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of
the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with
justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Ephesians
1: Blessed be God the Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all the spiritual blessings of
heaven in Christ. Before
the world was made, he chose us, chose us in Christ, to be holy and
spotless, and to live through love in his presence, determining that we should
become his adopted children, the people who would put their hope in Christ
before he came.
God our Father, before Mary was born, you chose her to be Jesus' mother.
Before I was born, you chose me to be a brother/sister of Jesus

Luke
1: In
the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town
of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named
Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You
have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a
son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of
God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a
virgin?" The
angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her
old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth month". "I am
the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done
for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb
