Samuel 10-11: The Ammonites went to war with the
Israelites,
but David led the Israelites to victory.
During a further war with the Ammonites,
David stayed in Jerusalem and did not go to the battle. While in Jerusalem, he made love to
Bathsheba
the wife of Uriah
who conceived and sent word to David, "I am with child." David recalled Uriah to Jerusalem
and tried to get him to sleep with his wife. But Uriah loyally observed the custom of the
time
and refrained from marital relations since he was a soldier at war. David then arranged for Uriah to be killed in
battle
by having him stationed in a defenceless position. After a time of mourning for
Uriah,
Bathsheba became David's wife and bore him a son. The Lord was displeased with David.
Dear God, help us not to
displease you
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
144: Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress.
He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song,
you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the Lord.
Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings
grown tall and strong from their youth; our daughters graceful as columns,
adorned as though for a palace.
Let our crops and stock be blessed.
May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.
Lord, please help us love and
honor you every day.
Don't let us ever forget your love
Listen

Ephesians
5.21-33:
In your families, treat each other as Christ
wants you to:
Wives, in your husbands see Christ the head of the Church.
Husbands, love your wives as Christ loves the Church. When men and women get married, they become
one body.
This sacred action helps us understand the relationship between Christ and
the Church
Jesus, please help husbands and wives to love
each other
the way you love the Church

Matthew
9.1-8:
Some people carried a paralyzed man through a
crowd to Jesus.
The man was on a bed. Jesus knew that these people believed he could
help them,
so he said to the paralyzed man "Courage, your sins are
forgiven". Religious leaders in the crowd were
thinking to themselves
that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins. So Jesus said to the leaders: Which is
easier:
to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'? Then to prove that he had authority to forgive
sins,
he said to the paralyzed man
"Get up, pick up your bed and go home".
The man got up and went home.
The crowd praised God for what they had seen.
Jesus, please give me more
faith in your power to forgive, your power to heal

Pope John XXIII - Pope of Peace: Amazon. Powerful ...moving...inspiring. Must admit I didn't know about the courage Roncalli showed in protecting Jews against Nazis. Nor did I know about his courageous work in Bulgaria ... not to mention the way he attracted President de Gaulle of France to a function by hiring the best chef in Paris! Roncalli's role in preventing war at the time of the Cuba crisis is gripping material. The kind but firm way he dealt with opposition from the Curia is a lesson for peace-makers. A great movie. Full of humor right from the opening scene where Roncalli is being measured for his ...coffin!

Samuel 8-9: Wherever David went, the Lord gave him success
and victory. David showed kindness to Saul's
family. Meribbaal, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul
was crippled in both feet.
David restored Saul's property to Meribbaal

people who do evil,
you who do justice for the needy. I have no way out of
this situation.
And no one wants to help me. Lord, I beg you tonight

for my spirit fails within me. In the morning let me know your love
for I put my trust in you.
Lord, please help people who

Ephesians
5.10-20: Try to discover what the Lord wants of you.
Have nothing to do with the futile works of darkness. Wake up from your sleep, rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you. Be very careful about the sort of life you
live.
Follow your enlightened mind, not your unruly passions. Avoid drunkenness. Instead, be filled with the
Spirit.
Sing prayer songs when you are together, and when you're by yourself, keep
on singing to the Lord in your heart, always giving thanks to God

Matthew
8.23-27: Jesus and his "fisher of men"
friends got into a boat
to cross the lake near Capernaum. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in
the boat.
Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up and said
"Save us, Lord, we are sinking".
Jesus stood up, and ordered the wind and sea
to be calm.
Straight away the wind and sea were calm. Jesus' friends said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."
Jesus, please calm the storms
in my life, my family, our world

96: O sing a new song to the
Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name.
Proclaim his help day by day. Tell
among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It
was the Lord who made the heavens. Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give
the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the
Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea
and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the
trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory

John
2.1-11: Jesus, his
mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at
Cana in Galilee. The
wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus
replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His
mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There
were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold more than
70 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water"
and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the
man in charge of the banquet". When the man tasted the water, it had
turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the
best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus.

Yesterday afternoon I attended the annual general meeting of Aitece,
a wonderful NGO which has sent around 400 teachers to work in China in
universities and colleges over the past 3 years, mainly in poorer areas.
Last night after MercyHK's shop in Temple Street closed at 8pm, I spoke with a
stall holder next to the shop who said that with the current 6pm curfew for
eating in at restaurants, already poor business has further deteriorated.... to
the point that she and other stall holders are now struggling to make enough
money to buy food. At one point today she went for 4 hours without a sale. So I
am proposing that MercyHK sponsor our struggling neighbours for a canteen lunch
box each day over the next few weeks.

Samuel 7:
After David settled into his palace and the
land enjoyed peace,
David thought about building a temple for the Lord.
Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David:
" I will establish your dynasty for
ever.
But it will be your son, not yourself,
who will build a temple for me."
David praised God:
"Who am I, Lord, and what is my House,
that you have helped me so much
and promised me so much?
May my House continue in your presence for
ever.
May you bless my House forever."

too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being,

138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart.
You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you.
I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love
which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered.
You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you
when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways:
"How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction

Ephesians
4.22-32:
You must give up your old way of life.
You must put aside your old self and its delusions. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual
revolution, so that you can follow a way of life based on goodness and
truth. From now on, no more lies.
Delete anger from your mind at the end of each day. Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing. Try
to find a decent job. Guard against foul talk.
Let your conversation encourage people, not drag them down. Avoid grudges. Don't lose your temper.
Don't raise your voice to anyone. Don't call people names. Be friends with one another, and kind,
forgiving one another as readily as God forgives us in Christ

Matthew
8.5-13: In the town of Capernaum, a Roman army captain
said to Jesus
"Sir, my servant is paralyzed and in great pain."
Jesus replied "I will go and heal him".
But the captain said
"Sir, I am not worthy that you should enter my house.
Just say the word and my servant will be healed. For I understand orders. I give an order, and
people act.
I know that you also just need to give an order,
and my servant will be healed". Jesus said
"This foreigner's faith is greater than that of the local people.
And I tell you that in the future
people from all parts of the world will be in the kingdom of heaven".
Then Jesus said to the captain
"Go home. Your request made in faith is granted". And the servant was healed at that moment.
Jesus, please give more people, from all parts of the world, the faith of the captain

On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our

"If you want to, you can heal me." Jesus also broke the law.
He stretched out his hand, touched the leper,
and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!"
The man was healed immediately.
