Tues March 8

On this International Women's Day I can say than MercyHK in Jordan is providing emergency accommodation for about 50 Covid domestic helpers. Yesterday 7 positive cases were transferred to the new govt quarantine centre at Ching Yi ... and 7 new positive cases came to our centres. My updated file of media articles is here. Using Zoom, Fr Jun O.M.I. and HELP are working with the govt to co-ordinate the transfers. Jun and HELP have also been providing counselling to all cases since this work began on February 18. And again I ask a blessing on the many kind people who have helped MercyHK in this work by spiritual, material and financial assistance

Ezra 5-6: The prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the people in the rebuilding of the temple. Despite opposition, the Jews kept on rebuilding the temple.
Dear God, when anyone tries to stop us from doing good, please give us courage to keep going
My recording of this reading

Psalm 41: Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak. He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble. The Lord will help him on his bed of pain. The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health.
Lord, please help me to do more for the poor

Listen

1 Thessalonians 4.13-18: You asked us about the situation of people who have died. Do not mourn in an unhealthy way for them, like people who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and that it will be the same for everyone who dies in God's friendship: God will give them life with Jesus. They will live in God's House for ever. With thoughts such as these you should comfort one another in times of mourning
Jesus, please increase my faith in the life to come

Listen

Matthew 19.27-29: On behalf of all the disciples, Peter asked Jesus "What about us?  We have left everything to follow you." Jesus replied "You will be leaders in the church on earth. Also, anyone who has left home, family or country for the sake of my name, will receive a 100-fold blessing in this life, and will also receive eternal life in Heaven."
Jesus, please bless all Gospel workers

Reflection: Re today's first reading .... sometimes opposition comes in the form of lack of encouragement, even total disinterest ... from those who should be encouraging

Yesterday when I took 3 new arrivals to one of our centres, I used a key to open the door, thinking that no one was inside .... forgetting that there were already 3 occupants in the centre. All 6 are from the Philippines so they soon had a good laugh about the situation ..... and the forgetful old priest

Ezra 4: Having returned from exile, the Jews started to rebuild their temple in Jerusalem. But some enemies of Israel tried to frighten and dishearten the Jews from rebuilding the temple
Dear God, when anyone tries to stop us from doing good, please give us courage to keep going

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love
Listen

1 Thessalonians 4.1-11: We urge you and appeal to you in the Lord Jesus to make more and more progress in the kind of life you are meant to live. God wants you to be holy. He wants you to keep away from fornication. Live life peacefully. Get a decent job and earn your living
Jesus, make me be a better person, a better Christian

Listen

Matthew 19.16-26: A young man asked Jesus "Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?" Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill;  do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich. Jesus then said to his disciples "It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".
Jesus,  don't let riches endanger my eternal life

Sunday Examiner report on homeless Covid domestic workers being helped by MercyHK *** Last night MercyHK was providing emergency accommodation for 44 homeless Covid domestic helpers, of whom 7 are positive cases. Many kind people are helping us, including a team from the NGO Christian Action. CA is also co-ordinating a new program whereby MercyHK will sponsor a free rice meal each day for needy asylum seekers whose govt food vouchers are now almost useless because of empty supermarket shelves. Last week was something very special: MercyHK opened 3 new centres in a matter of days in response to the urgent situation of homelessness. When the present crisis is over, maybe the new centres can be used by poor people or as hostels for domestic workers. *** "Firing Covid domestic helpers is not tolerated by HK govt" (??? supposing a helper wanted to take an employer to court ... the case could take months if not years to process ... during such time would the helper be allowed by Immigration to stay in HK? .... and if she was allowed to stay & presumably not allowed to work, how would she support herself???) *** There is no truth in the rumour that I have Covid .... thank you Jesus!

c.f. readings for Lent 1

Deuteronomy 26: Moses' teaching: "When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must take the first-fruits of your produce to the priest then in office and say 'Today I declare to the Lord my God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our fathers he would give us.' After the priest receives your offering, you must declare: 'My father was a wandering Aramaean. He went down to Egypt to find refuge there, few in number. But then he became a nation, great and strong. The Egyptians ill-treated us, they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us. But we called on the Lord our God who heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. The Lord our God then brought us out of Egypt with mighty hand and outstretched arm, with signs and wonders. He brought us here and gave us this land, a land where milk and honey flow. So I now bring the first-fruits of my produce that you, Lord, have given me'. You are then to share these gifts with your household
and with the Levite and stranger who live among you
.

Dear Lord, help me to show gratitude for all your gifts, by sharing what I have with those less fortunate than I

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Romans 10-11: If your lips confess that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. How wonderful is God!  How great his wisdom and knowledge. What finite creature could ever understand the mind of our infinite Creator? All that exists comes from him. To him be glory for ever!
Jesus, Father, Spirit - three persons, one God - to you be glory for ever!

 Listen

Luke 4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted by the Devil. The Devil said "If you are the Son of God, turn a stone into bread". Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone". The Devil took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be yours" he said. Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God". Then the Devil took him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels protect you". Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not put the Lord our God to the test". The Devil then left him
Jesus, protect us from the Devil and all evil

Sat March 5

Yesterday afternoon the govt arranged for 23 homeless Covid domestic workers (21 of them positive) to be shifted from our MercyHK centres in Jordan to govt quarantine facilities. But if the same thing happens this time as happened a week ago when a previous group went to the govt facilities, they will be released when negative and told "you can go home now" ....but they don't have homes, they are homeless ... which means they will be back in Jordan in a few days! And yesterday one new negative and 4 new positive women came, two of them very late last night .... usual sad stories (...arbitrarily terminated when showing signs of Covid ....unable to get flight when tested positive at airport etc). 60 (previous) night - 23 + 5 = 42 in our care last night.

No food in supermarkets for coupon asylum seekers (.. MercyHK will give to any such people who come to Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan)

Ezra 2-3: About 50,000 Jews returned to Israel after 70 years of exile in Babylon. The returnees gathered in Jerusalem for worship. They were overcome with joy.

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better
Lord, help us better understand the meaning of life

1 Thessalonians 3.11-13: May God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ make it easy for us to visit you again. May the Lord be generous in increasing your love, and make you love one another and the whole human race as much as we love you. May the Lord so confirm your hearts in holiness, that you may be blameless in the sight of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus Christ comes with all his saints
Jesus, please increase my love for the whole human race

Matthew 19.13-15Some people brought their little children to Jesus. They hoped Jesus would  put his hands on the children and bless them. Jesus' disciples told the people to go away and not bother Jesus. But Jesus said "Don't prevent the little children from coming to me". Then he put his hands on them and blessed them.
Jesus, please help all children to know you from their earliest days. Please don't let parents prevent children from coming to you.

Last night MercyHK in Jordan was providing emergency accommodation for about 60 homeless Covid domestic helpers, of whom 23 are positive. Ezra 1: After the Jewish people had been in Babylon about 70 years, the Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia to free the Jews. The king also told the Jews to re-build their temple in Jerusalem.
Dear Lord, please give freedom to all the peoples of the world

My recording of this reading

Psalms 35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander me, you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious, you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you, you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you, confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust in you, especially in time of trouble

Listen

1 Thessalonians 2.13-16: As soon as you heard the Good News, you accepted it as God's message and not just some human thinking. This message is still a living power among you. For the sake of the Good News, you have been badly treated by your own countrymen, just as Christians in Judea have been badly treated by the Jews. The Jews have been persecuting us and hindering us from spreading the Good News
Jesus, please help people who are being hindered from spreading the message of your love

Listen

Matthew 19.1-9: One day some religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him "Is it against the Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?" Jesus replied "God created male and female, for the two to become united as one body. What God has united, no one should separate." The leaders then asked "But why did Moses allow divorce?" Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce because people were so hard of heart.  But divorce was not God's plan. So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery".
Jesus, please help married people stay together

Thu March 3

Last night MercyHK in Jordan was providing emergency accommodation for 55 homeless Covid domestic helpers, of whom 23 are positive. Last night four negative cases moved into a new centre we have started - MercyHK Hostel (B), and yesterday we also started renting a further new centre - MercyHK Hostel (C). B & C are in Shanghai Street. The original MercyHK Hostel is now A!

To provide space for the storage of luggage of our guests (many became homeless at the airport) and for the storage of items for the centres, we have temporarily changed our MercyHK second hand shop at 191 Temple Street into a multi-purpose area for storage and also office space for our social workers (especially Lucia Leung who is doing an amazing job co-ordinating the project of looking after so many places and people).

Not forgetting the many kind people who have made donations over the past two weeks to support our work. Eddie Chan our Director says he has written around 300 receipts in the past week. To be honest, our problem now is not finance but accommodation .... ordinary HK people have fully booked out all hotels and guest houses in order to avoid Covid homes.

SCMP video report - how the NGO HELP Domestic Helpers is helping women homeless because of Covid. Nearly all of MercyHK's 55 guests have been referred to us by HELP

Jesus please give eternal life to two local drug addicts who died in the past week .... their deaths at least partly caused by the extremely cold weather that affected HK last week. The men had joined in activities at our Dr Jesus Centre. R.I.P.

2 Kings 21-25: Josiah king of Judah was a good leader who loved the Lord and promoted religious reform. But most other kings of Judah and Israel at this time were not good. The country was invaded by the king of Babylon who deported most of the population to Babylon. Only the poorest people in the countryside were left behind.
Dear God,  please give the world good leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Listen

1 Thessalonians 1.7 - 2.12: You are a great example to other believers, since it was from you that the word of the Lord spread to many places. Everyone knows how we planted the Good News in your hearts, and how you broke with idolatry and became servants of the living God. Let me remind you how we loved and served you, like loving parents caring for their dear children
Jesus, thank you for the people who nurtured me as a Christian

Listen

Matthew 18.21-35: Peter asked Jesus "How many times must I forgive someone? 7 times?"  Jesus answered "Not 7, but 77 times. For the kingdom of heaven is like a king who cancelled the huge debt of one of his servants. But that same servant refused to cancel the tiny debt of one of his fellow servants. So the king said to the servant: 'When you appealed to me, I had pity on you and cancelled your big debt.  But you refused to have pity on your fellow servant who asked you for mercy. Therefore you must now go to prison until your big debt is paid.' If you refuse to forgive other people, you are making yourself ineligible for God's forgiveness."
Jesus, please help me to forgive other people, just as you forgive me....many times each day

March 2
Ash Wednesday
(.. no meat ... )

Last night MercyHK in Jordan was providing emergency accommodation for 49 homeless Covid domestic helpers, of whom 20 are positive. Because our Dr Jesus Centre (9 positive cases) and MercyHK Hostel (A) (11 positive cases) are almost full, we have now rented another unit (in nearby Shanghai Street) to be known as MercyHK Hostel (B) to take 10 more positive cases. If/when (A) and (B) are no longer needed for Covid cases, they can be used for other needy people.

All over HK shops and businesses have closed, because staff have Covid. The MTR is running fewer trains because so many staff have Covid. The health system has imploded. Most Covid cases are self-medicating at home. Hotels and guest houses are fully occupied as people move out of Covid homes. The real number of fifth wave Covid cases is said to be 1.7 million out of total population of 7.4 million! (that's 23%)

A lot of people are going to need a lot of help in the coming months. LORD, HAVE MERCY!

c.f. readings for Ash Wed

Joel 1-4: My country has been invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth and lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help. "Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Every one will prophesy and see visions. You will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."
Lord, let our land be filled with knowledge of you and love for you
My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Recording

2 Cor 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"

- from the song "How Great Thou Art"

Recording

Matthew 6.1-15: Jesus said to the crowds: When you do a good deed, do it for its own sake, not just to get people to praise you. When you pray, love to pray in private in your heart. Don't be looking for people to notice and praise you. When you pray, there's no need to rave on and on. God is not deaf. Prayer is not a lawyer arguing a case. Prayer is a child speaking with simple trust like this: Our Father in heaven, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Thank you for enough food for today. Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial. Protect us from evil.
Jesus, help me remember that each time I pray "The Our Father", you are praying with me. "Your Father = my Father = our Father"

Recording
