Tues March 15

Yesterday morning I did something I usually do almost every day but haven't done for a couple of weeks because of the pandemic situation: I had a trip on the MTR! ....to Admiralty to the Chinese University office, to enrol 16 prisoners for correspondence courses.

Yesterday afternoon 14 Covid positive cases for whom MercyHK has been providing emergency accommodation in Jordan were transferred to the government quarantine centre at Ching Yi. Last night we were still providing accommodation for 49 cases, of whom 10 are positive.

Also yesterday afternoon 3 very kind Catholic doctors visited our 191 Temple Street social centre with supplies for the centre and for a sharing with some of our negative cases .... and a plan to set up an on line consultation for our cases. Our social centre is being set up to deal with the deteriorating Covid situation ....we expect many more people - local people as well as domestic workers - to need help in the coming weeks as HK heads towards 4.5 million infected people.

A few days ago I decided not to link this report about elderly patients in a hospital being surrounded by bags of dead bodies but since the number of elderly people dying each day continues to rise (more than 200 yesterday) I keep thinking that if elderly sick people could be given a Cross, there wouldn't be a need for so many body bags.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Nehemiah 7-13: The wall of Jerusalem was finally rebuilt and doors were set in place in the wall. In the seventh month of the lunar calendar Nehemiah assembled all the people and read to them the Book of the Law of Moses. This was the first time that most of the people had heard the words of Moses' Book. The people were grateful to God and praised him with great happiness. The people also promised God that they would serve him more faithfully in the future. But while Nehemiah was away on a visit  to the king the people and leaders became careless about the Law. When  Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem he brought the people back to proper observance of the Law
Dear God, may we find joy and strength in reading the Bible and may the world have more good leaders like Nehemiah

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Listen

2 Thessalonians 3.1-5: Pray that the Lord's message may spread quickly, and be received with honor as it was by yourselves. Pray that we may be protected from the interference of bigoted people. May your hearts focus on the love of God our Father and the fortitude of Christ
Jesus, don't let bigoted people influence me

Listen

Matthew 22.34-40: In Jerusalem a religious leader asked Jesus "Which is the most important commandment?" Jesus replied "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart. And you must care as much about others as you care about yourself. These are the two most important commandments. All other commandments depend on  these two."
Jesus, please help me love you with all my heart and care for others as much as I care about myself

Reflection: Times of trouble and difficulty - like now in today's world - are times for getting back to the message of God's word, times for focusing on God's love and the example of Jesus

Nehemiah 6: As Nehemiah and the Jews rebuilt the wall some people continued to obstruct them. But with God's help the wall was finished in 52 days
Dear God, please help us do your work, despite difficulties

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me.Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

2 Thessalonians 2.1-17Regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, don't be deceived by wild speculation. Stand firm in your faith and avoid speculation. Keep the traditions we taught you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. May God strengthen you in everything good you do or say
Jesus, stop people spreading false information

Listen

Matthew 21.12-16: When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he went to the Temple. In the Temple there were money changers, and people selling pigeons. Jesus tipped over their tables and drove them out of the Temple. He said to them "My house is a house of prayer,
but you have turned it into a place for robbery
". Blind and lame people came to Jesus in the Temple. He healed them all. Then he went out of the city to the village of Bethany and spent the night there.

Jesus, please protect  all places of prayer from corruption

Listen

Reflection: Nehemiah kept going, despite difficulties. The psalmist kept going, despite sinning. Paul urges the Thessalonians to stand firm, to keep going. Jesus in his last week didn't sit around feeling sorry for himself about to die at the end of the week .... he kept teaching and healing till his final day.

During breakfast over the past few days I watched this video about Lent. A bit hard to follow but has some ideas I was not aware of (or had forgotten) ... e.g. the 3 temptations of Jesus parallel the 3 temptations mentioned by St John and the 3 temptations of Adam (!) .... Jesus being the new Adam .... and this 3-Combo corresponds to the three practices of Lent: Prayer, fasting and works of mercy!

c.f. readings for Lent 2

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you.

Philippians 3.20 - 4.1: Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe. So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord.
Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

 Listen

Luke 9.28-36: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray. On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed. His clothes became brilliant as lightning. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him". When the voice had finished speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer.

MercyHK's second hand shop in Temple Street, which has been closed for two months because of the pandemic .... and which is likely to remain closed for some time until the pandemic eases .. . has been transformed into a social centre .... for Lucia and team to store and distribute masks, rapid tests, medicine  & meals for Covid cases .... with an area set aside for social workers Simon, Patrick and Raymond to continue their service of other needy people (especially homeless people and drug addicts). Nehemiah 5: The people were very  poor and could not pay their debts. Therefore Nehemiah cancelled all debts owed by poor people. Nehemiah was a just and kind leader. He even used his own money to pay his expenses, and never took the salary that he could have claimed.
Dear God,  to reduce government corruption in all countries, please raise up more leaders like Nehemiah

My recording of this reading

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws.
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Listen

2 Thessalonians 1.1-5: From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy to the Church in Thessalonika: grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We take special pride in you because of your perseverance, despite persecutions and other troubles you have to face. People who refuse to accept the Good News are facing an eternal penalty: to be excluded forever from the presence of the Lord. So we pray that God will help you be the sort of people he wants you to be. In this way our Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified in you
Jesus,  help me "keep going" when trials come

Listen

Matthew 21.1-11: Jesus sat on a donkey colt for the trip down the hill from the Mount of Olives to the city of Jerusalem. This was as a prophet had predicted: "Look, your king is coming, humbly riding a peaceful donkey". Big crowds accompanied Jesus down the hill.
People spread their clothes on the road as a sign of honor. People cut branches from the trees and waved them singing "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!" People in the city asked "Who is he?" The crowd answered "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee".

Jesus, may you be warmly welcomed by every place and every person in the world

Nehemiah 1-4: Nehemiah was cupbearer for the king of Persia. He heard how the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem were facing many difficulties. Nehemiah received permission from the king to go to Jerusalem and help rebuild the city. Nehemiah then supervised the re-building of Jerusalem's wall, even though some foreigners in Jerusalem made fun of him. When the workers were ridiculed by foreigners, Nehemiah said to the workers: "Do not be afraid of them. Just keep your mind on the Lord."
Dear God, please help us to do what is right, even if we meet ridicule and opposition

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. Matthew 20.29-34: As  Jesus was leaving Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, many people followed him along the road. Sitting by the road were two men who had become blind. When they heard that Jesus was going past, they called out "Son of David, have pity on us." Some people tried to stop them from calling out, but they shouted even more loudly "Son of David, have pity on us." Jesus stopped and said to them "What do you want me to do for you?" They replied "Lord, let us see again". Jesus felt sorry for them. He touched their eyes and straight away their sight returned

Ezra 8-10: Before the Jews left Babylon, Ezra had organized them to pray and fast for a safe journey. When the Jews reached Jerusalem, Ezra dissolved any marriages that had been arranged with foreign women  while the Jews were in Babylon.

Psalm 46: God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. 1 Thessalonians 5.12-18: Respect your Christian leaders. Be at peace among yourselves. Warn idlers, give courage to people who are struggling, care for the weak, and be patient with everyone. Matthew 20.20-28: The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left". Jesus said to James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left". The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all "In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world".

Ezra 7: Ezra was a scholar who loved to study the Law of the Lord. He was a descendant of Aaron. The Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia to grant any request that Ezra made to help the Jews. Ezra prayed: "Blessed be the Lord our God, for moving the
king's heart to look favorably on the rebuilding of our temple."

Dear God, please move the hearts of all government leaders to look favorably on citizens who want to do good things

Psalms 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

1 Thessalonians 5.1-11: The Lord's coming will not find us unprepared if we live a good life. You are not children of the night and of darkness. You are children of the light and of the day. Matthew 20.1-16: Jesus said to his disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them the normal daily wage. Then about 9am he went again to the market place. He saw more men without a job.  He got them also to go to his vineyard. He promised to pay them a fair wage. About noon and again about 3pm he once more went to the market place and employed two more groups of men. About 5pm he went one final time and employed one last group of men. At sunset when the men came to be paid, the owner paid everyone a normal day's wage.  This made the dawn group unhappy. They grumbled and said "We have done a full day's work in the heat. Yet we got the same as those who did only one hour's work. This is not fair!" The owner replied "I am paying you what we agreed to. Why do you begrudge my generosity?
Jesus, please help me not to be jealous of your gifts to others
