Tues March 29
Yesterday morning began with an encouraging phone
call from Cardinal John Tong, assuring his prayers for all in the MercyHK family
... followed by a visit by two of Mother Teresa's sisters, giving hope and joy
to our guests at Hostel E .... followed by a visit by Brenda and Bernard from
Caritas HK (which most kindly donates a large quantity of fruit each Mon-Wed-Frid
to our social centre in Temple Street for distribution to needy people, starting
with homeless Covid domestic helpers)
Last night MercyHK was providing emergency accommodation for 32 Covid homeless domestic helpers, of whom
7 are Covid positive. ***

Late yesterday afternoon in the ICU of a HK hospital, our most
dear friend Camay Lam expressed the wish to go home to Heaven, in view of the
terrible suffering she has endured in recent weeks. Last night she had one foot
in Heaven. JESUS, GOOD SHEPHERD, CAMAY IS IN YOUR HANDS!

Tobit
13: Tobit praised and thanked God in these words:
"Blessed be God who lives
for ever,
declare his praise in every nation. He is our Creator, our God, our
Father.
Praise him for all his kindness to us. My soul rejoices in the King of
heaven.
Let his praise be sung in Jerusalem and in all nations."
Dear God, may you be known and
loved
by all the peoples of the world, since all people are your children

Psalms
82-83: God says to corrupt officials:
"How long will you judge unjustly and mistreat the poor?
You should do justice for the weak and the
orphan.
You should defend the afflicted and the
needy.
You should rescue the weak and the
poor.
You should set them free from the hand of the wicked". O God, please protect your people from
corruption and injustice.
Save us also from attack by other nations.
Let everyone know that you are the Lord of all the earth.
Lord, please stop corrupt
officials from hurting people

Timothy 5.19-23:
Never accept an accusation brought against a
church elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. If an elder
is at fault, reprimand him publicly as a warning to others. Be fair to everyone and never be influenced by
favoritism. As regards your frequent illnesses, I suggest
you give up drinking only water, and have a little wine for the sake of
your digestion

Matthew
27.1-26:
Early in the morning, the religious leaders
had Jesus bound with ropes.
They then took him to Pilate, the Roman governor. The leaders accused
Jesus of many crimes.
To the governor's amazement, Jesus remained silent. The leaders persuaded
the crowd to demand
the execution of Jesus. They called out to Pilate "Crucify him".
Pilate asked "Why? What has
he done wrong?"
The crowd shouted all the louder "Crucify him. Crucify him". Pilate then washed his hands in
front of the crowd and said
"I am innocent of this man's blood".
The crowd shouted "His blood be on us and on our children". Pilate then ordered Jesus to be
scourged and crucified.
Jesus, help people who are condemned to death
Listen

Reflection: Some people say that the crowd which called out "crucify him" was the same crowd that welcomed Jesus on Palm Sunday. This is not correct. The Palm Sunday people on the Mount of Olives were Jesus' disciples and friends. The crowd calling out "crucify him" was a "rent-a-crowd" group around dawn on Good Friday

Yesterday afternoon I got the MTR to Sheung Shui station.
Then got a taxi to go to Lo Wu women's prison to hand in some items. As soon as
I got into the taxi, the driver said "Doctor Jesus" .... he had been
my driver on a previous trip! I always give drivers a copy of Dr Jesus. And to
extend the story: yesterday I forgot to take my usual supply of Dr Jesus
booklets, and as I got into the taxi I thought to myself "I forgot the
books ...won't be able to give him a copy" .... at which moment I heard the
words "Dr Jesus"!!! For the record, there are 2,800 New Territories
taxis!

Mon March 28
Yesterday two local HK doctors visited the Dr Jesus Centre in
Temple Street, Jordan. They
came separately, at different times. They do not know each other. They came to
encourage the work of MercyHK. During conversations, both said the same thing:
HK is going the wrong way in dealing with Covid .... we should be doing what
other places are doing .... treating Covid with respect, but not with paranoia
.... with a thorough vaccination program, carefully opening up etc. Unvaccinated
elderly people, sadly, are at high risk, but the vast majority of people who
have been fully vaccinated can expect only minor symptoms if infected, and can get on with
life and don't need to be living in fear.

Tobit
12: When Tobit's banquet was finished,
Tobit wanted to thank Raphael for all his help. Only then did Raphael tell Tobit
and Tobias
that he was an angel sent by God to help them. "I am Raphael, one of the 7
angels who stand ever ready
to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Never tire of giving God thanks.
And never tire of helping the poor."
Raphael farewelled them, rose in the air, and left them.
They praised and thanked God for all he had done for them.

who brought you out from the land of Egypt. Let there be no foreign god among you,

Timothy 5.1-14: Do not speak harshly to
a man older than yourself, but advise him as you would your own father. Treat
younger men

Treat older women as you would your mother. Treat
younger women with
propriety, as if they were your sisters. Be considerate to widows. If a widow wishes to
be enrolled as a church worker, she must be at least 60 years old, the
wife of one husband. As regards young widows, it's best if
they re-marry

Matthew
26.69-75: Peter went to the place where the religious
leaders had Jesus on trial.
A young woman in the courtyard of the place said to him
"You are a friend of the Galilean". In front of the woman and people
around her
Peter said "I don't know what you're talking about". Peter went to the gateway of the
place, where another woman said to people around her "This man is a
friend of the Galilean".
Peter replied strongly "I don't know the man". Not long after this a group of
people said to Peter
"You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent". Then Peter even more strongly
replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster
crowed.
Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will
deny me three times". Peter went outside and wept loudly.
Jesus, please help me not to deny you. Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"

Joshua
5: The
kings of the Jordan area heard
that the Lord had dried up the Jordan's waters to let the Israelites cross over.
The kings became very afraid of the Israelites. At
Gilgal near the Jordan the Lord instructed Joshua that all un-circumcised men
should be circumcised. It was at Gilgal that the Israelites kept the Passover
Feast and
tasted the produce of the land. As soon as the Israelites tasted the
produce of the land, the manna stopped falling.
Dear God, thank you for all you did for the Israelites
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
34: I will bless the Lord at all
times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast,
the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us
praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he
set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord,
to rescue them. Taste
and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The
Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will
save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness
each day

Cor 5.14-19: The
love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and
sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for
everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We
must spread the news of this reconciliation
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I
scarce can take it in"
- from the song "How Great Thou Art"
Listen

Luke
15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger
said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come
to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later,
the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild
living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he
began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm feeding pigs. He
would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything. Then
he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have
more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger I will leave this place and
go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I
no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid
servants." So he left the place and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way
off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy,
clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father,
I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called
your son"
But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put
it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we
have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration,
because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is
found."
Jesus,
please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what mistakes I
make

Reflection on the above readings: We remember the Lord's goodness to us (first reading), how "good to eat" is his goodness (Psalm 34), how he continually calls us to be reconciled to himself and others (2 Corinthians) ... with the "Prodigal son" (Gospel) being a classic example of such reconciliation

HK to have sixth wave of Covid next month?!
(from March 24 editorial of Ming Pao):
Government expert advisor Gabriel Leung Cheukwai predicts
that, without the influence of other factors, the daily number of new infections
will be in three-digits on 21 April, the starting date for the first phase of
easing social distancing measures. But the problem is that if the city goes for
relaxing its social distancing measures without first achieving zero COVID in
the community, the pandemic will definitely rebound. A
sixth wave of the pandemic is likely to surface in late April or early May.
The HKU epidemiological model projects that, if the government goes ahead with
its plans of easing social distancing measures as announced this week, the sixth
wave of the pandemic may peak in early June, with a total of an extra 2.2
million infections.

Psalms
79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred

they have profaned your holy temple.
They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our

the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last?
How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against

If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now

Matthew
26.57-68: The men who arrested Jesus took him to a

death,
even if they had to use false evidence. Jesus remained silent before
their accusations.
Then the main leader challenged Jesus:
"Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?" Jesus replied "Yes".
The main leader then called out "We have heard him claim to be of Divine origin. This is blasphemy".
The rest of the leaders shouted
"He should die".
Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their
fists.

Tobit 9-10:
Tobias arranged that Raphael go to Gabael
to collect the silver left by Tobit many years before. Gabael returned with Raphael to
Raguel's house
and joined the wedding feast. Realising that his parents would
be worried about him,
Tobias left for home as soon as the wedding feast was over. Raguel gave Tobias and Sarah half

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us.
May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols.
Then God raised up David to be their
leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all
you have done for us

A few days ago I bought a new keyboard for my PC .... and
after only one day I accidentally pressed a key called "Sleep"
... which caused several problems. Will be more careful in the future! Can't
remember if my old (slightly faulty) keyboard had a "sleep" button
.... I gave it away when I bought the new one.

Readings are from
Simple Bible
Tobit 8: Before Tobias went to bed with Sarah,
he remembered what Raphael had said. Tobias put some of the fish's heart and liver
on burning incense. The smell of the fish made Asmodeus flee.
Tobias with Sarah then prayed to the Lord:
"You are blessed O God of our fathers.
Let the heavens and all creatures bless you,
you who created Adam and Eve. I now take Sarah as my wife
not for any lustful reason, but out of true love. Please have pity on us
and bring us to old age together." Then they went to bed. Meanwhile
Raguel, who feared Tobias would die,
prepared a secret grave. But when Raguel sent a maid to the room of
Tobias and Sarah
the maid found they were alive and sleeping peacefully. Then Raguel too praised God:
"Thank you, my God, for making me happy.
What I feared has not happened." The next day Raguel prepared the customary 14
day wedding feast.
Dear God, thank you for the many times when we
could say
"What I feared has not happened"
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
73-77: Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper,
I wonder what's the use in trying to be good? But then I realize that
everyone someday has to pay the bill
for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see
our world and religion in ruins,
I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that
God has promised to break the power
of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good
people. So may all people honor
the Lord our God and judge.
May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord,
you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good
and to trust you always

Timothy 4.1-7: Don't be surprised if some people come up with
strange ideas about how to live life. Satan and his friends are always
trying to sow lies and deception in the Lord's field of truth. Have nothing to do with strange ideas like
"marriage is forbidden" or "you are not allowed to eat
certain foods". Everything God made is good, and no food is to
be rejected, provided grace is said for
it. The word of God and prayer
make food holy
Jesus, please help me remember to say a little
prayer before I eat

Matthew
26.30-46: After their last meal, Jesus said to his
apostles
"Tonight all of you will desert me".
Peter said "I will never desert you".
Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows,
you will deny me three times". They came to a place with olive
trees called Gethsemane.
Jesus took Peter, James and John to a part of that area
and asked them to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness
and fear.
He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is
dying.
Please support me as I pray." Then he fell on his face and
prayed for about an hour:
"Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be
done". He stood up and found that the
apostles were asleep.
He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support
me?" Three times he prayed the same way.
Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get
ready. The one who is betraying me is coming".
Jesus, please help me give more
time to prayer

Reflection: God could have saved the world by a word or by a simple action. Why the death of Jesus? Maybe one answer: to show the clearest possible sign of his love .... to make it as difficult as possible for anyone to say "no" to his love
---------------------------
Over the past week I have gradually been moving all my office
items from my home at 197 Temple Street to the Dr Jesus Centre at 187 Temple
Street .... only a one minute walk ....no need to hire a GoGo van! I have
fallen in love with the extra space and extra tables ... not to mention the
privilege of being able to work right next to the prayer room. The move has
been facilitated by the move of social workers Simon, Patrick and Raymond from
the Dr Jesus Centre to our former second hand shop at 191 Temple Street (which
is now a social centre and distribution centre of items for needy
people).
