Tues April 5

Today is Ching Ming  - Risen Jesus, please give eternal life to all the dead, especially Covid-19 victims!

Yesterday in order to have a bit of prayer time before Easter .... and to have a break after many weeks of busy work helping homeless Covid domestic helpers, I went hiking to Big Wave Bay ... in perfect weather. Even had a swim. (See below!). I followed much the same way as this O.M.I. hike in Nov. 2020

The funeral Mass for our dear friend Camay Lam will be at 10am on Friday April 29 at St Joseph's Church, Central. Main celebrant will be Bishop Joseph Ha O.F.M., a good friend of Camay.

Last night MercyHK was providing accommodation for 20 Covid domestic helpers, of whom 3 were positive cases. *** My file of media articles about homeless domestic workers

Numbers 21: In order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline. But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the people and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live
Jesus' words (John 3.13): "The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".

My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

John 8: Jesus said:

When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He and that I do nothing of myself: what the Father has  taught me is what I preach; he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him. As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.

Yesterday while swimming at Big Wave Bay, I felt something on my left ear. At first I wondered was it a fish? A crab? Seaweed? Then I saw it: my mask! It had been hanging underneath my chin and I'd forgotten to take it off!!! It had detached itself from my right ear but was still hanging from my left ear!!!

New report by SCMP on situation of Covid homeless domestic helpers - with photo of a group sleeping in the Dr Jesus Centre

Shanghai asks all residents to self-test for Covid .... this is going the wrong way .... might have worked for Delta but not for Omicron. Omicron can't be contained. Only way to go is full-vaccination and then get on with life. China's Covid policy won't work against Omicron. With wrong policy and with vaccines which are not very effective against Omicron, China is heading for a very difficult time. And if HK is required to follow the same path .... ???

Daniel 13: A beautiful woman named Susanna was condemned to death on a false charge of immorality. God stirred Daniel's heart to help Susanna. Daniel confronted Susanna's two accusers, two elderly Jewish men. Daniel had the two men separated.
He then asked them individually where the alleged crime took place. One of them said "under a mastic tree." The other said "under an oak tree." The people then realized the men were lying. The people praised God for giving such wisdom to Daniel. Susanna was freed. The two men were executed, as required by the Law.

Lord, please help people who have been falsely accused of crimes

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

John 8.12-32: Jesus said to the people "I am the light of the world. Those who follow me will not walk in the dark. They will have the light of life. If you take my words to heart, you will be my disciples. You will learn the truth, and the truth will set you free"
Jesus, give light to my life. Increase my love for your teaching. Help me learn more about truth

c.f. readings for Lent 5

Isaiah 43-45: The Lord says: Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are mine. If you travel over the seas, I will be with you. If you travel on great rivers, I will protect you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior. They are ignorant, those who carry around an idol made of wood, those who pray to a lump of wood that cannot hear. Turn to me and be saved all peoples of the world.
Lord, please help me be more aware of your protection each day and night

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Philippians 3.7-11: Because of Christ, I have come to consider all my former advantages as a scholar as disadvantages. Nothing is more important than knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. I want to share his sufferings by carrying the Cross with him. This is the way I can hope to receive eternal life.
Christ Jesus my Lord, knowing you is No. 1

John 8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the religious leaders brought to him a women who had been caught committing adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you say?"  They said this to test him, looking for something to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied. "Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin any more"
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The leaders' sins? "If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could claim innocence?"

Judith 5: When Holofernes heard that the Israelites were resisting him he was very angry. He asked Achior, leader of the neighboring Ammonites, for information about the Israelites. Achior told Holofernes of the Israelites' history: how God had freed them from Egypt, how they had conquered the land of Canaan, and how God protected them. Holofernes ignored Achior's advice and decided to attack the Israelites.
Dear God, please protect our country from war and strife

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

2 Timothy 1.6-8: I remind you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I prayed over you with the laying on of hands. God's gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love and self-control. Never be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord. Like me and with me, put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News
Jesus, help me put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News

Matthew 27.57-66: Joseph from Arimathaea was a rich man who had become a disciple of Jesus. After Jesus died on Friday, he asked Governor Pilate for Jesus' body. Joseph wrapped the body in a clean burial cloth and put it in his own new tomb in a rock cave. He then put a large stone at the cave's entrance. The next day, Saturday,  the religious leaders went to Pilate and said
"This imposter said he would rise from the dead after 3 days. Therefore you should secure the tomb in case his disciples steal the body and say he has risen from the dead". Pilate gave them a guard and told them to secure the tomb. The guards took up their position at the tomb and seals were put on the entrance stone.

Judith 2-4: Nebuchadnezzar summoned his top general Holofernes and gave him a huge army to punish the nations that had not joined him for the war against Arphaxad. Nation after nation, people after people, fell to the sword of Holofernes. Some places  made peace with Holofernes by giving him all their possessions and then becoming slaves of Nebuchadnezzar, worshipping Nebuchadnezzar as a god. As the army of Holofernes approached Israel, the Israelites fasted and  prayed to God for help. They also blocked the mountain passes to delay Holofernes' advance.
Dear God, please help nations which have been invaded by other nations

My recording of this reading

Psalm 86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer for I am poor and needy. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart
for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant and save your handmaid's son.

Dear Lord, thank you for all your love

2 Timothy 1.1-5: From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy, dear child of mine in the faith, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord. I always remember your sincere faith. It came first to live in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and now in yourself.
Jesus, thank you for parents who pass on the faith to their children

Matthew 27.45-54: Jesus was put on the cross about 9am. From about noon until 3pm there was darkness over all the land. About 3pm Jesus cried out the words of Psalm 22: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" A little while later he again cried out in a loud voice. Then he died. At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom,  and there was a violent earthquake. The Roman soldiers were terrified. Their leader called out "Truly this was a son of God".
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

He took part in my anti-drug campaign by writing these three letters (which a kind friend translated and put in illustrated form on our special website): 01 02 03  I hope his participation in my campaign can help him get a few months reduction of sentence, as allowed by the Court of Appeal.

Judith 1: When Nebuchadnezzar was king of the Assyrians, he fought a war with King Arphaxad and his supporting nations. Nebuchadnezzar sent a message to the nations near Assyria to help him fight Arphaxad. But the peoples of those places ignored Nebuchadnezzar. They thought victory was beyond him. But Nebuchadnezzar was in fact victorious and after his victory he set out to punish the nations which had refused his call for help.

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. 1 Timothy 6.11-13: As a man of God, avoid things like greed and disputes. You must aim to be a saint, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle. Matthew 27.32-44: As Jesus was taken to the place of crucifixion, a man name Simon, from Cyrene, was made to carry Jesus' cross. Jesus was then nailed to the cross and hung on the cross. Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Above Jesus' head was a sign with the charge against him: "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews". People passing by that place made fun of Jesus. So did the religious leaders. They mocked and taunted him.

Tobit 14: Tobit was 62 when he went blind. He died when he was 112. After he was cured of blindness, he continued his custom of helping the poor. Before he died he said to Tobias: "Take your family and move to Media, since Nineveh will soon see war and strife. Serve God sincerely, always be willing to help poor people." After Tobit and Anna died, Tobias moved to Media and lived with Raguel his father in law.
Dear God, please help me imitate Tobit in his kindness to poor people

Psalm 84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord. My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your temple guests. They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple. And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life, you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Dear God, thank you for special places of prayer

1 Timothy 6.3-10: Some people, because of ignorance and pride, have a craze for questioning and arguing about everything. Such a craze breeds jealousy and mistrust and unending disputes. People who have a craving to be wealthy are a prey to temptation. They get trapped into all sorts of foolish and dangerous schemes which ruin their lives. The love of money is the root of all evils. It can cause people to leave the faith
Jesus, help me be content with a simple lifestyle

Matthew 27.27-31: After the Roman soldiers scourged Jesus, they made fun of him: they put a red cloak on him, they made a crown out of thorns, they put a reed in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him saying "Hail, king of the Jews". They spat on him. They took the reed and hit him with it. When they had finished making fun of him, they dressed him  in his own clothes and led him away to crucify him.
Jesus, please don't let me hurt other people by making fun of them

  Listen

Reflection: The Gospels give only a brief mention to the scourging of Jesus - some people say this is a sign of their genuineness, since bogus reports would spend much time on the scourging details - but we know that the aim of scourging was to half kill people, so they would not last long when crucified. The movie The Silent Witness claims that Jesus received far and above the legal amount of scourging  .... which explains Pilate's surprise that he died so quickly on the cross.
