Tues April 26
Yesterday at the Dr Jesus Centre there was an Easter lunch for volunteers at MercyHK's former second hand shop in Temple Street, Jordan (which is now a social centre). By chance (Providence?) yesterday was also the first anniversary of the blessing and opening of the Dr Jesus Centre by Bishop Joseph Ha ...at which the volunteers were present. So, a good day to be back at the centre. And late afternoon our local parish priest Fr Joseph Sun paid a visit ... he also had been present on opening day! Thank you Jesus for one year at your centre!

Judith
6: Holofernes not only ignored Achior's advice, he ridiculed him for
suggesting that the Israelites could resist his army.
Holofernes then handed Achior over to the Israelites "to suffer the
same punishment as they would receive from Holofernes' army."
Dear God, when people ridicule
us for speaking the truth, please give us strength and courage

Psalm
84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord.
My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your
temple guests.
They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in
your temple.
And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in
their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life,
you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple
is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Dear God, thank you for special
places of prayer

Timothy 2.14-25: Remind everyone to avoid useless debates and
discussions.
These cause scandal and loss of faith. Be available for the Master to use you for any
good work. Focus on goodness, faith, love and peace.
Avoid futile speculations which only lead to quarrels. A servant of the Lord is not to engage in
quarrels, but should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. Be gentle with anyone you have to correct
Jesus, please help me avoid useless
discussions and arguments

Mark
1.1-8: This is the
story of the Good News about Jesus Christ,
the Son of God. Long ago God
said through the prophet Isaiah
"I am going to send my messenger before you. He will prepare your
way. A voice cries out in the wilderness: prepare a way for the
Lord". And so it was
that John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness,
proclaiming a baptism for the forgiveness of sins. As the people
were baptized by John in the river Jordan,
they confessed their sins. John wore a
garment of camel skin.
Locusts and wild honey were his food. He said to the
people "Someone is coming who is more important than I am. I am not
worthy to kneel down and undo his sandal straps.
I baptize you with water. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".
Jesus,
please help us prepare a way for you like John the Baptist

For today's Feast of St. Mark
Mark
14.48-52: Jesus said to them
"Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs? Day
after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All the apostles then
deserted him and ran away. A
young man who followed
Jesus had nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, but he left the
cloth in their hands and ran away naked.

Acts
15.36-40: Some time after
this, Paul said to Barnabas "Let's revisit the towns where we preached the
word of the Lord". Barnabas suggested taking John
Mark with them, but
Paul opposed this, since John Mark had deserted them on the previous trip when
the situation became dangerous. After a violent argument, Paul and Barnabas
split up. Barnabas went with John Mark to Cyprus. Silas joined Paul for his next
journey.

Sun April 24
For the past few months our regular Saturday afternoon prayer
meeting for the sick (especially cancer patients) has been held by zoom. But
yesterday, now that govt restrictions have been eased, we were able to resume
meeting together at the Dr Jesus Centre. A most encouraging experience.
Yesterday my assistant Lucia and I helped a Russian asylum seeker who has been
using heroin and is sleeping in a park. I bought a meal for her, we prayed with
her at the Dr Jesus Centre, then Lucia helped her buy some clothes ..... telling
her we can provide accommodation if she can stop using heroin for a week (....
not so easy ...). I decided not to mention Ukraine .... she possibly doesn't
even know about the invasion.

Acts
5.12-16: All the
believers used to meet regularly in an area of the Temple. Their numbers kept on
increasing. So
many miracles kept happening that sick people were laid
on beds on the street, in the hope that at least Peter's shadow would cover them
as he walked past. People came from the towns near Jerusalem, bringing their
sick, and all of the sick were healed
Jesus, let more healings take place in our day
My

Psalm
118: Give thanks to the
Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His
love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no
end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It
is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling,
falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my
song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has
raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The
stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is
the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We
rejoice and are glad.

Rev
1.9-17: I,
John, share your sufferings. I was on the island of Patmos, imprisoned for
having preached about Jesus. One Sunday the Spirit possessed me. I heard a voice
shouting "Write down all you see, and send it to the seven churches of
Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea". I
turned to see who had spoken to me, and I saw Jesus, full of glory. His face was
like the sun shining with all its force. He said to me "Do not be afraid. It
is I, the First and the Last. I am the Living One"
Jesus, Living One, we praise and adore you, Lord

John
20.21-29: That same Sunday
evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had gathered, for
fear of the religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before them, saying
"Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his side and said
"As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he breathed on
them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the 12
apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had seen
the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I refuse to
believe". Eight days later, the group was again in the same house, with the
doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again appeared and stood
before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he said to Thomas
"Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but believe". Thomas
replied "My Lord and my
God!" Jesus said "You believe because you can see me. Blessed
are those who have not seen me and yet believe"
Jesus, my Lord and my God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in
your friendship

Reflection on the above readings: Each time we praise Jesus as our Lord and our God, we are reminded we belong to him and should honor him - just as a child belongs to its parents and should honour them .... and Jesus is reminded it's his job to help and protect us - just as parents have the job of helping and protecting their children. Especially when we enter a church and acknowledge Jesus in the tabernacle ...and at the Consecration ... and in Communion ... and as we leave the church ...let's use Thomas' words: My Lord and my God!

4.13-22: The religious leaders were astonished that
two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently. The
leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was

warning not to speak in future about Jesus.
Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God? We

Yesterday there was a lunch meeting for the remaining homeless domestic workers for whom MercyHK is providing accommodation .... with representatives of the NGO HELP for Domestic Helpers which has referred around 70 cases to MercyHK over the past two months. The 2 NGOs will continue to work together to help migrant workers who need accommodation while in between job contracts or while waiting for court cases etc.
Yesterday in a chat with one of our domestic helper guests I learned she spent four years at university in the Philippines, studying agricultural science ... but can earn more in HK as a domestic worker than she can in the Philippines as a professional person. Very sad.
On a happier note I can report that MercyHK social worker Simon, with the help of 2 volunteers, has been able to persuade a young homeless man to accept a room .... after he spent the past two months on the street in the Yau Ma Tei area.

21.1-14: Jesus also
appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other
disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught
nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not
recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the
boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on
the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they
returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The
net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread.

24.36-49: The disciples were still talking about what

couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to
eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then he opened their minds to understand the
Scriptures, and he said "So you see how it is written that the Christ
would suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. And that in his
name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the

Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!" Peter then took him by the hand and helped him

Luke
24.13-35: That same
day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of
Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened,
Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him.
When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus
of Nazareth, and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in
our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive".
Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and
resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal, he
blessed some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he
immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did
not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the
road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to
Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord
has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road,
and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread
Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible

for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right;
he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made,
he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord,
he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord,
since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious
love

John 20.11-18: Peter and John
went home. Mary Magdalene remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside
the tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though
she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?".
Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken him
away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary"
and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my Father".
Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard.
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at funerals today. May awareness of
your presence bring them peace and strength for the days ahead

When we get to Heaven, one of the many Bible stories I'd
like to see a replay of is when Jesus left the tomb ... what was the reaction of
the men guarding the tomb when the entrance stone was removed by an angel and
out came Jesus?!
