Tues May 3
Hello from the annual O.M.I.
retreat at Sheung Shui .... after the
coldest May day for 100 years! The retreat is due to finish on Friday.
At 6.38 of this video,
Bishop Joseph Ha pays a beautiful tribute to Camay Lam whose funeral Mass he led
last Friday
From this Sunday, May 8, there will be a new prayer meeting, for non-cancer patients, 5pm each Sunday at the Dr Jesus Centre, 187 Temple Street, Jordan. Anyone with health problems most welcome. (Original plan was to have this meeting at 3pm, but now changed to 5pm so people can stay for a meal together after the meeting if they want to). The regular prayer meeting for cancer patients will continue each Saturday at 3pm

Judith
12: Holofernes allowed Judith and her maid to
stay in a special tent each night, and each morning to go to a spring near
Bethulia to wash and pray.
After 3 days, Holofernes held a banquet for his staff.
He invited Judith to the banquet with the aim of seducing her. Holofernes was so captivated by Judith's
beauty
that he kept on drinking wine until he was drunk. All the while Judith kept praying to God for
strength and help.
Dear God, please give me
a bit more of Judith's faith and courage
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next.
Before the earth or the world
existed,
you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are
like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life,
our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years,
or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our
life,
that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your
love.
Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord,
help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Titus
2.1-10: It's your job to preach the behavior that
goes with sound doctrine: the older men should be reserved, dignified,
moderate, sound in faith and love. The older women should be teachers of good
behavior, avoiding scandal mongering and too much wine. They should be an
example to the younger women in their love for their husbands and children.
Younger men should be moderate, with yourself
setting an example of sincerity for them. Slaves should be obedient to their masters,
and avoid petty thieving

John
1.35-51 (for
Feast of Sts Philip &
James, apostles): John
the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of
God. Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to
Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met Philip and
said to him "Follow me". Philip called one more man, Nathanael
(Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets
wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth".
Jesus, please help me introduce more people
to know and love you

Judith
11: Judith was very clever when she spoke to
Holofernes.
She told him that the Jews would be abandoned by God
if they broke God's laws. She said that the Jews planned to
break God's laws
in a few days by eating consecrated foods. She said she would monitor the
situation each day and let Holofernes know when the Jews were abandoned by
God and ready to be attacked by Holofernes. Judith's words and beauty won
over Holofernes and his staff
and they agreed to her suggestions.
Dear God, please give us wisdom
and tact
for dealing with difficult people

Psalm
89: I will sing for ever of your love, O
Lord.
Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever.
The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord.
The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our
beautiful world

Titus
1.1-9: From Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to
Titus, true child of mine in the faith we share, wishing you grace and
peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Saviour. The reason I left you behind in Crete was for
you to appoint elders in every town: each of them a man of irreproachable
character, married only once, not arrogant
or hot-tempered, not a heavy drinker, not out to make money. A man who is hospitable and a friend of all
that is good; sensible, devout, with a firm grasp of the Good News, a good
teacher, able to refute people who argue against sound doctrine
Jesus, please help all pastors be good
"elders"

Mark
1.35-39: The next morning,
long before dawn,
Jesus left the house and went off to a lonely place to pray.
When Simon and the other fishermen found him, they said
"Everyone is looking for you". Jesus replied "We must go to the nearby
towns,
so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came". Jesus went all through Galilee,
preaching in the prayer halls and casting out devils.
Jesus, may every town on earth
welcome you and hear your message

Sun May 1
Yesterday afternoon the usual Saturday prayer meeting for cancer patients was held at the Dr Jesus Centre. A most encouraging experience. And ... please God ... from next Sunday, May 8, there will be a new prayer meeting, for non-cancer patients, 3pm each Sunday at the Dr Jesus Centre, 187 Temple Street, Jordan. Anyone with health problems most welcome. (History: one year ago today the first prayer meeting for the sick was held at the Dr Jesus Centre!)
Last night MercyHK was providing accommodation for 19 homeless domestic workers.
The work goes on. Last night I also attended a MercyHK finance meeting, with
Eddie, Michael, Lucia and Edmund ... we now have a proper business account at
the Bank of China (whose staff have been really kind and helpful to us) .... and
every time I go to the bank I say a little prayer for all our kind donors! (History:
two years ago today MercyHK's first street stall in Temple Street was begun!)

c.f. readings for Easter 3
Acts
5.21-33: When the
leaders had their big meeting later that same morning, they sent for the
apostles to be brought from prison. The police went to the prison, then came
back and reported to the leaders "We found that the prison was properly
locked, and the guards were on duty. But when we unlocked the door, there was no
one inside". Then a man arrived at the meeting with the news "At this
very moment, the men you imprisoned are now in the Temple preaching to the
people". The police again arrested the apostles and brought them to the
meeting. When the main religious leader reminded them of his previous warning
not to preach, Peter and the apostles replied "Obedience
to God comes before obedience to men. God raised Jesus up to be the
Savior. We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God gives to those
who obey him". This made the leaders so angry that they wanted to kill the
apostles.
Jesus, please help me put obedience to you before all other obediences

Psalms
29-30: The Lord gives us
strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank
you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when
sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing.
So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

Revelation
5.11-14: I
heard the sound of an immense number of angels gathered around God's throne.
There were 10,000 times 10,000 of them, shouting: "The Lamb that was
sacrificed is worthy to be given power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor,
glory and blessing". I heard all living things in creation - angels,
people, animals - crying out: "To the One sitting on the throne and to the
Lamb, be all
praise, honor, glory and power for ever and ever"
"Thou are worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou are worthy O Lord, to receive
glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power"

John
21.1-14: Jesus also
appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other
disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught
nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not
recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the
boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on
the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It
is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about
100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared
some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come
and have breakfast"
Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With you, 153 fish. Please help me
be more aware of your presence in my life

10: Judith put on her most beautiful clothes and

Then she and her maid headed for the Assyrian camp. She told the Assyrian soldiers that she was

- but do this with patience. Be prepared to face people who jettison sound

Mark
1.21-28: Jesus and the fishermen went to the town of
Capernaum.
On the Sabbath Jesus began to teach in the local prayer hall.
The listeners were deeply impressed by Jesus' teaching.
Unlike the religious leaders, Jesus taught with authority. That very day in the prayer hall there was a
man possessed by an evil spirit. The spirit shouted out "Have
you come to destroy me, Jesus of Nazareth? I know who you are: the
Holy One of God." Jesus said strongly "Be quiet! Come out
of him!"
The evil spirit threw the man on the ground and with a loud cry went out
of him. The people in the prayer hall were amazed.
They said
"Here is a teaching which has authority. Even evil spirits obey
him." Jesus' reputation quickly spread throughout
the whole district.

Remember who your teachers were, and how, ever since you were a child, you

that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and can be

he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew. Jesus said to
them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men".
Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus.
Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother
John. He called them also to follow him. They left their nets and
boat and followed him.

Holofernes laid siege against the Israelite
mountain town of Bethulia.
Holofernes seized control of Bethulia's water supply springs,
thinking that thirst would force the Israelites to surrender. For 34 days the siege continued, until the
people of Bethulia were weak from thirst. The people of Bethulia prayed hard to God for

And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in
their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life,
you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple
is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Dear God, thank you for special

2
Timothy 2.14-25: Remind everyone to avoid useless debates and
discussions.
These cause scandal and loss of faith. Be available for the Master to use you for any
good work. Focus on goodness, faith, love and peace.
Avoid futile speculations which only lead to quarrels. A servant of the Lord is not to engage in
quarrels, but should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. Be gentle with anyone you have to correct
Jesus, please help me avoid useless
discussions and arguments

Mark
1.1-8: This is the
story of the Good News about Jesus Christ,
the Son of God. Long ago God
said through the prophet Isaiah
"I am going to send my messenger before you. He will prepare your
way. A voice cries out in the wilderness: prepare a way for the
Lord". And so it was
that John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness,
proclaiming a baptism for the forgiveness of sins. As the people
were baptized by John in the river Jordan,
they confessed their sins. John wore a
garment of camel skin.
Locusts and wild honey were his food. He said to the
people "Someone is coming who is more important than I am. I am not
worthy to kneel down and undo his sandal straps.
I baptize you with water. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".
Jesus,
please help us prepare a way for you like John the Baptist

For the past week the weather bureau has been displaying a
symbol for showers for tomorrow. But last
night the symbols were "sunny" and "cloudy". Reason for
my interest? Because today I'm due to go with a group of special people on a
hike to Big Wave Bay near Sai Kung! May God bless us with a safe and enjoyable
journey!
