Tues May 3

Hello from the annual O.M.I. retreat at Sheung Shui  .... after the coldest May day for 100 years! The retreat is due to finish on Friday.

At 6.38 of this video, Bishop Joseph Ha pays a beautiful tribute to Camay Lam whose funeral Mass he led last Friday

From this Sunday, May 8, there will be a new prayer meeting, for non-cancer patients, 5pm each Sunday at the Dr Jesus Centre, 187 Temple Street, Jordan. Anyone with health problems most welcome. (Original plan was to have this meeting at 3pm, but now changed to 5pm so people can stay for a meal together after the meeting if they want to). The regular prayer meeting for cancer patients will continue each Saturday at 3pm

Judith 12: Holofernes allowed Judith and her maid to stay in a special tent each night, and each morning to go to a spring near Bethulia to wash and pray. After 3 days, Holofernes held a banquet for his staff. He invited Judith to the banquet with the aim of seducing her. Holofernes was so captivated by Judith's beauty that he kept on drinking wine until he was drunk. All the while Judith kept praying to God for strength and help.
Dear God, please give me a bit more of Judith's faith and courage

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Recording

Titus 2.1-10: It's your job to preach the behavior that goes with sound doctrine: the older men should be reserved, dignified, moderate, sound in faith and love. The older women should be teachers of good behavior, avoiding scandal mongering and too much wine. They should be an example to the younger women in their love for their husbands and children. Younger men should be moderate, with yourself setting an example of sincerity for them. Slaves should be obedient to their masters, and avoid petty thieving
Jesus,  help me be a good person, a good Christian

John 1.35-51 (for Feast of Sts Philip & James, apostles): John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God.  Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth".
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Judith 11: Judith was very clever when she spoke to Holofernes. She told him that the Jews would be abandoned by God if they broke God's laws. She said that the Jews planned to break God's laws in a few days by eating consecrated foods. She said she would monitor the situation each day and let Holofernes know when the Jews were abandoned by God and ready to be attacked by Holofernes. Judith's words and beauty won over Holofernes and his staff and they agreed to her suggestions.
Dear God, please give us wisdom and tact for dealing with difficult people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Listen

Titus 1.1-9: From Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to Titus, true child of mine in the faith we share, wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Saviour. The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to appoint elders in every town: each of them a man of irreproachable character, married only once, not arrogant or hot-tempered, not a heavy drinker, not out to make money. A man who is hospitable and a friend of all that is good; sensible, devout, with a firm grasp of the Good News, a good teacher, able to refute people who argue against sound doctrine
Jesus, please help all pastors be good "elders"

Listen

Mark 1.35-39: The next morning, long before dawn, Jesus left the house and went off to a lonely place to pray. When Simon and the other fishermen found him, they said "Everyone is looking for you". Jesus replied "We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came". Jesus went all through Galilee, preaching in the prayer halls and casting out devils.
Jesus, may every town on earth welcome you and hear your message

Reflection on the above readings: For Jesus, prayer was absolutely essential. May we also give more importance to prayer

Sun May 1

Yesterday afternoon the usual Saturday prayer meeting for cancer patients was held at the Dr Jesus Centre. A most encouraging experience. And ... please God ... from next Sunday, May 8, there will be a new prayer meeting, for non-cancer patients, 3pm each Sunday at the Dr Jesus Centre, 187 Temple Street, Jordan. Anyone with health problems most welcome. (History: one year ago today the first prayer meeting for the sick was held at the Dr Jesus Centre!)

Last night MercyHK was providing accommodation for 19 homeless domestic workers. The work goes on. Last night I also attended a MercyHK finance meeting, with Eddie, Michael, Lucia and Edmund ... we now have a proper business account at the Bank of China (whose staff have been really kind and helpful to us) .... and every time I go to the bank I say a little prayer for all our kind donors! (History: two years ago today MercyHK's first street stall in Temple Street was begun!)

c.f. readings for Easter 3

Acts 5.21-33: When the leaders had their big meeting later that same morning, they sent for the apostles to be brought from prison. The police went to the prison, then came back and reported to the leaders "We found that the prison was properly locked, and the guards were on duty. But when we unlocked the door, there was no one inside". Then a man arrived at the meeting with the news "At this very moment, the men you imprisoned are now in the Temple preaching to the people". The police again arrested the apostles and brought them to the meeting. When the main religious leader reminded them of his previous warning not to preach, Peter and the apostles replied "Obedience to God comes before obedience to men. God raised Jesus up to be the Savior. We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God gives to those who obey him". This made the leaders so angry that they wanted to kill the apostles.
Jesus, please help me put obedience to you before all other obediences

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

 Listen

Revelation 5.11-14: I heard the sound of an immense number of angels gathered around God's throne. There were 10,000 times 10,000 of them, shouting: "The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy  to be given power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessing". I heard all living things in creation - angels, people, animals - crying out: "To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb, be all praise, honor, glory and power for ever and ever"
"Thou are worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou are worthy O Lord, to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power"

 Listen

John 21.1-14: Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have breakfast"
Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With you, 153 fish. Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Not just a few fish, but 153. Whether it was changing water to wine or multiplying loaves and fish, Jesus was the opposite of stingy

Judith 10: Judith put on her most beautiful clothes and jewelry. Then she and her maid headed for the Assyrian camp. She told the Assyrian soldiers that she was fleeing from Bethulia since it would soon be attacked. She said she wanted to give Holofernes some important information. The soldiers took her to meet Holofernes.
Dear God, please give us the courage of Judith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 88: Lord my God, day and night I call to you for help. Please turn your ear to my cry. For my soul is filled with evils. My life is on the brink of the grave. I am reckoned as one in the tomb. I have reached the end of my strength. Will your love be told in the grave? Will your wonders be known in the dark? Fear surrounds me like a flood. All my friends have deserted me.

2 Timothy 4.6-8: As for me, my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to the end. I have run the race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me, but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Mark 1.29-34: Jesus  went to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus took her by the hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve her visitors. That night all the local sick people were brought to Jesus. He healed many who were suffering from all kinds of diseases. He also cast out many devils.
Jesus, please heal (..name..) who is sick

Judith 9: Judith put ashes on her head, bowed with her face to the ground, and prayed urgently to God: "Lord God, help of the oppressed, support of the weak, please hear my prayer and protect your people Israel."
Dear God, help us to imitate Judith and pray to you with faith when we are in trouble

My recording of this reading

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

2 Timothy 4.1-5: In the presence of God our Father and of Christ Jesus, I give you this command: proclaim the Good News and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. Refute falsehood, correct error, call to obedience - but do this with patience. Be prepared to face people who jettison sound teaching in favor of the latest novelty. Instead of listing to the truth, they will turn to myths. Make the spreading of the Good News your life's work
Jesus, please protect me from junk ideas and misleading  teachers

Mark 1.21-28: Jesus and the fishermen went to the town of Capernaum. On the Sabbath Jesus began to teach in the local  prayer hall. The listeners were deeply impressed by Jesus' teaching. Unlike the religious leaders, Jesus taught with authority. That very day in the prayer hall there was a man possessed by an evil spirit.  The spirit shouted out "Have you come to destroy me, Jesus of Nazareth?  I know who you are: the Holy One of God." Jesus said strongly "Be quiet! Come out of him!"
The evil spirit threw the man on the ground and with a loud cry went out of him. The people in the prayer hall were amazed. They said "Here is a teaching which has authority. Even evil spirits obey him." Jesus' reputation quickly spread throughout the whole district.

Jesus, Holy One of God, please protect my family from evil

Judith 8: Judith lived in Bethulia.  She had been a widow for 3 years. She loved God, prayed all the time, and often fasted. When she heard about the situation of Bethulia she encouraged the elders to keep on trusting God for help.
Dear God, when life gets tough, help us to keep trusting you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer for I am poor and needy. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant and save your handmaid's son.
Dear Lord, thank you for all your love

2 Timothy 3.12-16: Anyone who tries to live a sincere Christian life will be persecuted. Stay faithful to what you have been taught and know to be true. Remember who your teachers were, and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the Scriptures. From the Scriptures you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and can be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people's lives and teaching them to be holy
Jesus, please give all Christians, especially pastors, a passion for the Scriptures

Mark 1.14-20: Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good News from God. "The time has come" he said "and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News." As he was walking along by the sea of Galilee, he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew.  Jesus said to them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men".  Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus. Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother John. He called them also to follow him.  They left their nets and boat and followed him.
Jesus, please bless all the people who work full time as "fishers of men"

Judith 7: Holofernes laid siege against the Israelite mountain town of Bethulia. Holofernes seized control of Bethulia's water supply springs, thinking that thirst would force the Israelites to surrender. For 34 days the siege continued, until the people of Bethulia were weak from thirst. The people of Bethulia prayed hard to God for help. The leaders of Bethulia planned to hold out for 5 more days before surrendering. A feeling of hopelessness hung over the town.

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. 2 Timothy 3.2-5: For sure, some people will be self-centered and greedy; disobedient and ungrateful to parents; heartless, difficult to get along with; slanderers, profligates and enemies of everything that is good. Mark 1.9-13: About this time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the river Jordan. As soon as Jesus came out of the water, he saw the sky open and the Spirit, like a dove, coming down on him. Then a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you". Straight after this the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for 40 days. During this time Jesus was tempted by Satan.

Judith 6: Holofernes not only ignored Achior's advice, he ridiculed him for suggesting that the Israelites could resist his army

Psalm 84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord. My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your temple guests. They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple. And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life, you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.

2 Timothy 2.14-25: Remind everyone to avoid useless debates and discussions. These cause scandal and loss of faith. Be available for the Master to use you for any good work. Focus on goodness, faith, love and peace. Avoid futile speculations which only lead to quarrels. A servant of the Lord is not to engage in quarrels, but should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. Be gentle with anyone you have to correct
Jesus, please help me avoid useless discussions and arguments

Mark 1.1-8: This is the story of the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Long ago God said through  the prophet Isaiah "I am going to send my messenger before you. He will prepare your way. A voice cries out in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord". And so it was that John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism for the forgiveness of sins. As the people were baptized by John in the river Jordan, they confessed their sins. John wore a garment of camel skin.
Locusts and wild honey were his food. He said to the people "Someone is coming who is more important than I am. I am not worthy to kneel down and undo his sandal straps. I baptize you with water. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".

Jesus, please help us prepare a way for you like John the Baptist

For the past week the weather bureau has been displaying a symbol for showers for tomorrow. But last night the symbols were "sunny" and "cloudy". Reason for my interest? Because today I'm due to go with a group of special people on a hike to Big Wave Bay near Sai Kung! May God bless us with a safe and enjoyable journey!
