Tues May 10
I spent a large part of yesterday catching up on mail, mainly letters from prisoners. Thank Goodness the mail system in HK is still one of the best in the world. In fact, mail will often be received the day after it is posted!
Yesterday I also several times joined visitors to the Dr Jesus Centre in praying
for Marcos' son NOT to be elected
president in the Philippines. My hope is that last Sunday's Mass with readings
about the Good Shepherd might have influenced many people not to vote for a bad
shepherd.
Reflection of an English teacher: Yesterday at the Dr Jesus Centre when I got some hot water from our boiler for a cup of tea, the boiler partly obstructed a "danger" sign on a fuse box behind the boiler. So, what I saw was "anger" .... indicating that "anger" can come to mean "danger"!

Esther
4: When Mordecai heard about Haman's plan,
Mordecai asked Esther to appeal to Ahasuerus for help. Mordecai and Esther both knew that to approach
the king
without an invitation was a crime punishable by death,
unless the king saw fit to welcome an uninvited person. So they prayed to God to move the heart of
Ahasuerus to welcome Esther.
Dear God, please move the
hearts of rulers
to care for their people

Psalm
96: O sing a new song to the Lord.
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day.
Tell among the nations his glory,
and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple.
Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad.
Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
all the trees of the forest shout for joy.
Everyone and everything,
give the Lord glory and honor.
Lord, you are our Creator. We
love and praise you

3.1-13:
Focus on
Jesus, the apostle and high priest of
our religion.
He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just like Moses. Take care not to turn away from the living
God.
Keep encouraging one another, so that sin does not cause you to turn away
from God
Jesus, help me stay focused on you

Mark
3.7-12:
Jesus went again to the Sea of Galilee.
Great crowds of people from all over the country went to him.
They had heard what he was doing and wanted to see him. Large crowds of sick people pushed forward, trying to touch
Jesus.
They had heard how he had healed so many sick people.
Jesus, please heal my friend
(.. name ..) who is sick

Esther
3:
About this time Haman from the land of Agag
was promoted by King Ahasuerus to a top position. All other officials were
to bow and prostrate themselves before Haman. Mordecai refused to bow to
Haman. This made
Haman very angry.
Haman found out that Mordecai was a Jew.
Haman decided to kill Mordecai and all Jews in the kingdom. Ahasuerus agreed to Haman's plan
and a decree to this effect was announced:
all Jews were to be killed on the 14th day of the 12th month.
Dear God, please protect poor

Psalm
95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord.
Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks.
With songs let us praise the Lord.
A mighty God is the Lord,
a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth.
The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it,
and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us.
For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our
life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

2.14-18: The Son did not become an

Mark
3.1-6: Jesus again went to a prayer hall on the
Sabbath.
In the hall was a man with a withered hand. The religious leaders were watching Jesus to
see if he would heal on the Sabbath, hoping for something to use against
him. Jesus said to the man with the withered hand
"Stand in the middle of the hall". Then he said to the
religious leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do
good?"
They remained silent. Grieved that they were so obstinate, Jesus looked
angrily round at them, and said to the man "Stretch out your
hand". He stretched it out and it was healed.
The leaders left and began to plot how to get rid of Jesus.
Jesus, don't let my
heart become obstinate

Acts
13.13-52: Paul and
Barnabas went to another Antioch, Antioch in Pisidia. Out of jealousy, the local
Jewish leaders there stopped Paul from preaching to the Jewish community. Paul
and Barnabas then turned their attention to non-Jewish people, and
so the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside. But the
Jewish leaders kept up their campaign, and had Paul and Barnabas expelled from
Pisidia.
Jesus, please don't let Gospel workers be expelled

Psalm
100: Cry out with joy to the
Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for
joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We
are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving
thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his
name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful
from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Revelation
7.9-17: I saw
a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, and
language. They
were standing in front of the throne, with palms in their hands. They shouted: "Victory
to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb". One
of the elders told me who these people are: "These are the people who have
been through the great persecution.
They now serve God day and night in his sanctuary. The
Lamb is their Shepherd. He leads them to springs of living water. God has
wiped away all tears from their eyes".
Jesus, please help sorrowing people who are crying today

10.11-14: Jesus
said to the religious leaders "I
am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd is one who lays down his life for
his sheep. A hired man, since
he has no real concern for the sheep, abandons them and runs away if he
sees a wolf coming. I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep, and my own
sheep know me"
Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help me to be a good sheep, and a good shepherd

Sat May 7
Hello from Temple Street where I arrived back yesterday afternoon after the annual OMI retreat at Sheung Shui. In the past I would go from the retreat to nearby Lo Wu women's prison for a visit and to hand in items but not this time ... Covid restrictions have made visits and hand-ins more difficult. I hope to visit the prison before the end of this month.
One of themes of the retreat was that we priests should be more available to people. Well, from the moment I got back around 4pm to nearly 8pm there was a constant stream of people up the stairs of the Dr Jesus Centre to my desk .... one of whom was a domestic helper (accompanied by our social worker Lucia) who literally ran away from her cruel employer in a market two days ago and from two nights ago has been staying at one of our centres (... after making police report and getting advice from consulate). Last night she became guest number 22 staying at our new centres in Jordan (in addition to around 30 other homeless people staying at the Alhambra Building and other places in Yau Ma Tei)

Esther
2: A selection process was begun to find a woman
to replace Vashti as queen. Esther was a beautiful Jewish orphan girl who
had been brought up by her cousin Mordecai. After the long selection process was finished,
Esther was chosen to be queen.
No one in the palace knew she was Jewish.

Psalm
94: O Lord, Judge of the earth,
how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear".
But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches.
The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart,
God's consolation calms my soul.
Lord, when cares and troubles
increase, please help us to trust in you.

1.1-4: At various times in the past and in various

He has taken his place at the right hand of the Father.
He is far greater than any angel

Mark
2.23-28: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a
cornfield. The disciples were hungry.
They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the
Pharisees.
So the Pharisees said to Jesus
"Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his
followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which
only the priests were allowed to eat. Go and learn the meaning of these words
'What I want is mercy, not superficial external
offerings'. I am Master of the Sabbath."
Jesus, please help
me understand that love is more important than law
Listen
Reflection: "Through whom he made everything". I can't find a good explanation of these words. What does it mean that God the Father made everything through God the Son? That God the Son - not God the Father or God the Holy Spirit - became a man, we can understand. That the Holy Spirit - not the Father or Son - came down on the apostolic group at Pentecost, we can understand. But "through whom ...." is not so easy to explain. Please let me know if you can find a clear explanation: jdwomi@gmail.com

2.13-17: Jesus went again to the Sea of Galilee.
Many people came to him and he taught them there by the sea. Near the sea he saw a tax collector Levi
(Matthew) working at the customs house. Jesus said to him "Follow
me". He got up and followed him. Levi gave a dinner in his house for Jesus.
Sitting with Jesus were some tax collectors and "sinners".
In fact Jesus' followers included many tax collectors and
"sinners". Some religious leaders asked Jesus' disciples
"Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"
Jesus himself answered them: "It is not
the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. I did not come to call the
virtuous, but sinners."

Judith 14-16:
At daybreak the Jews attacked the Assyrian
camp.
When the Assyrians realized that Holofernes was dead,
they panicked and fled. The Jews gave thanks to God for all that
Judith had done. Judith praised the God of Israel for rescuing
the Jews: "Lord you are great, you are glorious,
wonderfully strong, unconquerable.
May all peoples love and serve you."
Dear God, thank you for the

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning,
and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad.
For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength.
You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our

Mark
2.1-12: After some time Jesus returned to Capernaum.
Crowds quickly gathered at the house where he was staying. While he was preaching inside the house,
four men carried a paralytic on a stretcher to the front door.
They couldn't get in, because of the crowd, so they went up on the roof,
took off some of the roof covering, and lowered the stretcher in front of
Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the
paralytic "Your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders
present in the crowd thought to themselves "Who does this man
think he is? Only God can forgive sins". Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he
asked them "Which is easier? To say 'Your sins are
forgiven' or 'Get up and walk'? But to show you that I have authority to
forgive sins I now say: get up, pick up your stretcher and go home."
The man got up, picked up his stretcher and
walked out in front of everyone. The crowd said "We have never seen
anything like this".
Jesus, please heal my

Judith 13: When the banquet was over at a late hour,
Judith was alone with Holofernes in his tent.
Holofernes lay drunk on his bed.
After praying to God for strength,
Judith used Holofernes' sword to cut off his head. She went outside and gave the head to her
maid.
Her maid put the head in her bag. Judith and her maid then left the camp
as they usually did when they went to pray early in the morning. They went straight to Bethulia and showed
Holofernes' head to the people. The people were overcome with joy
and praised God for what he had done by the hand of a woman.

Titus
2.11-14: God's grace has made salvation available for
the whole human race.
We must give up everything that does not lead to God. We must delete our worldly ambitions. We must
be self-restrained and live good lives here in this present world, while
we wait in hope for the blessings that will come with the Coming of the
glory of our God and savior Christ Jesus. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set
us free from wickedness, and to purify us so that we would have no

1.40-45: A leper came to Jesus and on his knees
pleaded
"If you want to, you can heal me". Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his
hand,
touched him and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!"
The leprosy left him at that moment and he was
healed. Jesus told the man not to tell people what had
happened
(in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use
him politically). But the man told everyone. Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town
(for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places. Even so, people from all around the district
would come to him.
Jesus, please heal people who
are lepers
