Tues May 17

Yesterday morning I went to the Chinese University office in Admiralty to enrol a group of prisoners for courses .... and I was stunned by the sight of signs at Admiralty Station saying "to Lo Wu" (a new line opened on May 15 .... well done MTR!)

I am due to go hiking today with a group of domestic helpers for whom MercyHK is providing accommodation. Last night we had 23 such guests. And see below

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Maccabees 4: The army of Antiochus was led by Gorgias and had 40,000 men. Judas and his men numbered only 3,000. Judas implored God for help and then fought bravely. The army of Gorgias was routed. The next year another force, numbering 60,000 men, was sent against Judas who had 10,000 men. Once again by prayer and courage, Judas was victorious.
Judas gave thanks to God, and then went to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem Judas re-dedicated the Temple and re-built the city walls

Dear God, please give me the courage of Judas

My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Listen

Hebrews 10.21-25 : Jesus is the supreme High Priest of the whole house of God. As we enter that house, let us have sincere hearts that are filled with faith and hope. Let us be concerned for each other, encouraging each other to do good. Do not stay away from the meetings as some people do, but encourage each other to attend
Jesus, may my life encourage others to do good

Listen

Mark 5.21-43: A prayer hall official, Jairus, fell at Jesus' feet and pleaded "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her and save her life". While Jesus was on the way to Jairus' home,  people arrived and told Jairus "Your daughter is dead. No need to trouble the Master any further". Jesus heard this and said to Jairus "Do not be afraid. Just have faith". Jesus allowed only Peter, James and John to go with him. At Jairus' home, everyone was weeping and wailing.
Jesus said to them "Why all this crying? The child is not dead, but asleep".  Everyone laughed at him. So he got them all to leave. Then taking the girl's parents and his 3 companions, he went to the place where the child was lying. Taking the girl by the hand he said to her "Little girl, I tell you to get up". The little girl got up at once.  She was 12 years old.

Jesus, please give us more faith to pray for the sick ....even for children who have died!

Reflection: "Courage" (Maccabees) and "encourage" (Hebrews) are related. "Encourage" means to give "courage" to others!

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Maccabees 3: Judas led the people in many successful battles. He often said that it is easy for a great number of soldiers to be defeated by a few. "Victory in war does not depend on the size of an army. It is from heaven that strength comes". As Judas' fame spread, King Antiochus ordered a huge army to attack Judas.
Dear God, please help us put our trust in you rather than in anyone or anything else

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

Listen

Hebrews 8-9: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel" Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions, to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart and protect me

Listen

Mark 5.25-34: A large crowd gathered around Jesus near the side of the Sea of Galilee. In the crowd was a woman who had suffered from bleeding  for 12 years. She had spent all her money on doctors, but they  had been unable to help her. She had heard about Jesus. She came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. "If I can touch even his clothes, I will be healed" she said to herself. As soon as she touched Jesus' cloak, the source of the bleeding dried up at once. Aware that power had gone out from him, Jesus turned round and said "Who touched me?" The woman fell at his feet and told her story.
Jesus said "My daughter, your faith has restored you to health. Go in peace and be free from your illness".

Jesus, please help sick people touch you by prayer

c.f. readings for Easter 5

Acts 14.19-27: Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium. They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian Antioch via Lystra and Iconium.  In each place they encouraged the believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be church leaders. Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish people
Jesus, please help me persevere in the faith, like Paul and Barnabas

My recording of this reading

Psalm 145: I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise. His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

Revelation 21.1-4: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, as beautiful as a bride all dressed for her husband. I heard a voice call from the throne: "You see this city? Here God lives among people. He will make his home among them. They shall be his people. He will be their God. His name is God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more sadness. The world of the past has gone
Jesus, may the thought of heaven give us courage here on earth

John 13.34-35: Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples".
Jesus, please help all Christians to love one another as you have loved us

Yesterday was a busy time at the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street: at 3pm Simon (MercyHK's social worker for homeless people), Fr Paul OMI (special guest) and I joined about a dozen local homeless people for our first Friday gathering since January (because of Covid). Then at 5.30 Fr Paul and I joined Lucia (social worker for homeless domestic helpers) for a gathering with domestic helpers (to celebrate a birthday and to welcome some new guests, including two women recently out of detention). And from 7pm to 9pm there was a meeting of about a dozen local residents, arranged by our district councillor. Last night MercyHK was providing accommodation for 24 overseas guests in our hostels (as well as accommodation for about 30 local homeless people at the Alhambra Building and other places)

Maccabees 2: Mattathias was a Jew loyal to his religion at a time when most people were not loyal. When the king's representative came to the town of Mattathias and started forcing people to take part in pagan ceremonies, Mattathias killed the representative. Mattathias then called on everyone loyal to God to join him in the desert. Mattathias soon had a small army which gradually won control of many parts of the country and restored observance of God's law. When Mattathias was coming to the end of his life he appointed his son Judas as his army successor.
Dear God, help us to be loyal to you like Mattathias

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love.He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Listen

Acts 1.15-26 (for Feast of St Matthias): During these days, Peter spoke to a group of about 120 disciples: "As you know, Judas hanged himself after betraying Jesus. We must now choose someone to take Judas' place, someone who has been with us since the time when John was baptizing". Two men were nominated, Joseph and Matthias. After prayer was offered, Matthias was chosen. He was listed as one of the 12 apostles.
Jesus, please protect your church from betrayal and disloyalty

 Listen

Mark 4.35-41: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. A sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up and said "Save us, Lord, we are sinking". Jesus stood up, and ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. Jesus' friends said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Jesus, please calm the storms in my life, my family, our world

Listen

Reflection: First reading has Mattathias who stayed loyal to God when most people forgot God. Acts has his namesake Matthias who stayed loyal to Jesus even though he was not chosen in the original 12. May we imitate the loyalty of these two Matts!

1 Maccabees 1: Some Jews abandoned their religion and made a pact with King Antiochus Epiphanes, a Seleucid king of the Greeks. Antiochus conquered many lands, including Israel. He plundered the Temple and forced the Jews to renounce their religion. But many Jews courageously stood firm and were punished with death. This was a sad and terrible time for Israel.
Dear God, please help us stay faithful to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples know and love you

Listen

Hebrews 7.1-28: Melchizedek was king of Salem and a priest of God. He blessed  Abraham.  Abraham gave Melchizedek 10% of all he had. Melchizedek's priesthood  continued down the ages in people dedicated to the service of God. It reached its perfection in the Son of God, the Eternal High Priest. The Son of God, our Lord, did not come from the priestly tribe of Levi. Everyone knows he came from the tribe of Judah. This is because he established a new priesthood, coming not from Levi, but from Melchizedek. This is why the prophecy was made of him "You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, for ever". Jesus' priestly power to save us is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him
Jesus, Eternal High Priest, please help all pastors and priests be more like you every day

Mark 4.1-20One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. Jesus explained the story: People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure
are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice
are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.

Jesus, please help me be good seed!

01 02

Reflection: The problem was not the seeds, but the location where the seeds landed. We must try to be good soil ourselves ... and help others be good soil. The seeds will do the rest

Esther 6-8: On the night between the two banquets, the king could not sleep. To induce sleep he started reading the history of his kingdom. He read how some years ago two of his eunuchs planned to assassinate him, but the plot was foiled by Mordecai. The king asked Haman how to honor a man whom the king wished to honor. Haman thought the king was talking about himself, Haman, so he suggested royal clothes, a royal horse and a royal parade. The king agreed and told Haman to honor Mordecai in this way. This was a great humiliation for Haman. And it got even worse for Haman. At the second banquet, Esther told the king that she was Jewish and that Haman planned to kill all Jews. The result: Haman was hanged on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, and the Jews were not only spared annihilation - they were given places of honor in the kingdom. The Jews praised God for all his help through Mordecai.
Dear God, please stop people like Haman from committing injustice

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

Hebrews 6.11-19: May every one of you persevere in your Christian life. Never give up. Remember how Abraham persevered in following God, despite so many difficulties. Take a firm grip on the hope that is held out to us by God. This hope is an anchor for us, a lifeline going right up to heaven
Jesus, you are my anchor. You are my lifeline

Mark 3.20-35: Jesus went back to Capernaum. Such a crowd gathered that he could not even have a meal. When his family  heard about such things, they set out to take care of  him, thinking that he was crazy. His mother and brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent in a message asking for him. Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for you".  Jesus replied "Who are my mother and brothers?" Then looking round at the people sitting in a circle about him, he said "Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother".
Jesus, please help me to do your will, even if people sometimes think I'm crazy

Esther 5: After Esther prayed to God for a long time, she went to the palace and presented herself to the king. At first the king was angry that Esther came without being invited, but then his heart softened and he welcomed her. When King Ahasuerus saw that Esther was distressed, he asked her what was wrong. He promised to do anything for her. Esther asked that there be two special banquets for herself, the king and Haman.  The king agreed and the banquets were arranged. Haman meanwhile was making his own arrangements: a high gallows on which to hang Mordecai.
Dear God, please move the hearts of rulers to be kind to their people

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. Jesus, our high priest, help me when I'm weak

Mark 3.13-19: Jesus went up a hill and called  his disciples. He chose 12 of them to be his special companions. He commissioned them for preaching. He gave them power to cast out devils. The names of the 12: Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter; James and John the sons of Zebedee. Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus,  Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot the one who would betray him.

And praying for one Islam-related intention each day of the week:
Jesus, today,
