Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Maccabees 12: Jonathan sent a delegation to Rome to renew his treaty with the Romans.  He also renewed treaties with other groups, all the time using politics to secure peace for Israel. But Demetrius once again made war on Jonathan, this time with
a larger army than before. Jonathan bravely faced and defeated Demetrius' army before they could enter the land of Israel. Not long after this Jonathan was tricked and captured  by Trypho who wanted to become king of Asia, replacing Antiochus.

Dear God, please give wisdom and courage to all leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalm 108: My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise. Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today. Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations. With your help we shall be brave.
Lord, we need your help every day

Listen

James 1.19-25: Be quick to listen, and slow to speak, and even slower to get angry. God's goodness is never helped by human anger. Accept and submit to the word which has been planted in your heart and can save your soul. Do what the word tells you. Don't just listen to it. Actively put God's word into practice in your life
Jesus, help me put your word into practice in my life each day

Listen

John 16.5-11:

Jesus said to his disciples:
‘Now I am going to the one who sent me.
Not one of you has asked, “Where are you going?”
Yet you are sad at heart because I have told you this.
Still, I must tell you the truth:
it is for your own good that I am going
because unless I go,
the Advocate will not come to you;
but if I do go,
I will send him to you.
And when he comes,
he will show the world how wrong it was,
about sin,
and about who was in the right,
and about judgement:
about sin: proved by their refusal to believe in me;
about who was in the right: proved by my going to the Father and your seeing me no more;
about judgement: proved by the prince of this world being already condemned.’

Reflection: In these days before Pentecost, the Church encourages us to think more about and pray more to the Holy Spirit ... asking the Holy Spirit to increase his influence in our lives

1 Maccabees 10: When King Demetrius was challenged for the throne by Alexander, Demetrius tried to get Jonathan's support for a possible war with Alexander. Alexander then also sought Jonathan's support, and appointed him as high priest of Israel. Demetrius again tried to win Jonathan's support, but Jonathan and the Jews did not trust Demetrius. Alexander and Demetrius went to war. Demetrius  died in the battle. Alexander then became king. He married Cleopatra, daughter of Egypt's Ptolemy, thus securing a treaty with Egypt. Jonathan met Alexander and Ptolemy and was given great honor in their presence. About 147 B.C. Demetrius son of Demetrius challenged Alexander for the throne. This younger Demetrius also challenged Jonathan to fight. Jonathan defeated the army of Demetrius. Alexander then gave Jonathan new honors.
Dear God, please help all countries live at peace with each other

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south. Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things. Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons. Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

James 1.1-12From James, servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Greetings to believers scattered around the world. You will always have difficulties and things going wrong. When they happen, praise God for them and patiently keep going. Blessed are people who stand firm when trials come. They have proved themselves, and will win the prize of eternal life which the Lord has promised to those who love him.
Jesus, please give me patience and praise when life gets tough

Mark 7.1-23: Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."
Jesus, please  clean my heart

God bless the new government in Australia. May it serve the people well. Interesting that both major parties lost support .... with support swinging to smaller parties and independents .... as a protest against the two major parties for being out of touch with the people.

My electoral form arrived around midday yesterday, per DHL from Australia, and had to be filled in and signed and posted within a few hours ... which I was able to do just in time for me to take part in the usual Saturday prayer meeting for cancer friends.

MercyHK was providing accommodation last night for 23 domestic helpers. Almost every day now someone leaves and someone comes. And among our guests are some who recently came out of detention *** And yesterday some kind friends arranged for repairs to be made to the roof of the Dr Jesus Centre. God bless those friends and yesterday's workers!

c.f. readings for Easter 6

Acts 15.1-29: Some Jewish Christians came to Syrian Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians should be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea, and decided to go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there. During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone how the Holy Spirit had been poured out on non-circumcised people. James  spoke of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord. James then issued a teaching for non-Jewish believers: "All we ask you to do is to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood from the meat of strangled animals and from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right"
Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable demands on other people

My recording of this reading

Psalms 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.
May all the peoples of the earth know you and praise you, O God

Recording

Revelation 21.10-23: I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's glory, and glittered like a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city, since the Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need sun or  moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of the Lamb.
Jesus, Light of the world, Light of Heaven, we adore you, Lord!

John 14.23-27: At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "If you love me, you will put my words into practice, and my Father will love you, and we shall make our home in your heart. The New Friend, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you. Peace I leave with you, my own peace I give you, a peace the world cannot give"
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, please help me understand how you live in my heart. Thank you for your peace

Sat May 21

On this day in 1861, in Marseilles, a French bishop died at the age of 78. He had been born into an aristocratic family which was forced to flee from the French Revolution. His family went to Italy as refugees. His parents had an unhappy marriage and eventually divorced. In Italy the young Eugene de Mazenod had an overpowering experience of the love of Jesus on the Cross. Eugene became a priest and dedicated himself to serving the poorest parts of French society such as prisoners and domestic servants. To further his work he joined with other priests to form a new congregation in the Church. The group came to be known as the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Today the Oblates have around 4,000 members working for the poor in most countries of the world. Saint Eugene de Mazenod, pray for us!  *** Letter for today from OMI leader Fr Louis Lougen

Today "Australia Votes". Usually, when there is an election, the Australian Consulate in HK will send an email with details for voting at the consulate. When nothing had come by May 10, I checked the consulate website and was horrified to find that, because of Covid (?), there would be no voting at the consulate this time. So, since voting is compulsory, I immediately applied on line for a postal vote. Yesterday I received a message to say that DHL will deliver my voting papers this morning!!
And ... Dear God ... please let the new government be good and caring!

1 Maccabees 9: King Demetrius sent another army against Israel. The size of this army was so large that many of Judas'
soldiers deserted him. Judas had only a small force to fight the king's army. Judas could have saved his life by running away from the battle, but he courageously chose to stay and fight. Judas died in the battle and his troops fled. Judas' brother Jonathan succeeded him as leader of the Jews. Jonathan gradually reclaimed control of most of the country and again there was peace for a time.

Dear God, please give me some of the courage of Judas

My recording of this reading

Psalm 106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right, who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt, they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them. But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour, God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.
O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

Listen

Hebrews 13.8-21: Jesus Christ is the same today as he was yesterday and as he will be for ever. Do not let yourselves be led astray by strange doctrines that teach a different Jesus. Jesus died outside the city. Let us go to him and share his rejection. Our life in this world is a temporary arrangement, like a tent. We look for a permanent home in the life to come. Keep doing good works and sharing your resources
God of peace, you brought  Jesus back from the dead to be our great Shepherd and Priest. Make me ready to do your will in any kind of good action

Listen

Mark 6.30-44: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please help the starving people of the world

Listen

Reflection: Sharing Jesus' rejection "outside the city" is the opposite mindset to "I must be careful, if I want promotion, not to say/do anything that anyone objects to"

Now that MercyHK has four accommodation centres in Jordan/Yau Ma Tei, there is no longer a need for our centres on Cheung Chau Island. So, yesterday Lucia and a team of helpers cleaned out the women's centre (with many items being given to the local church) whose tenancy agreement expires tomorrow. And in August a similar operation will be held at the men's centre (whose TA expires in August). On the one hand it is sad to leave, but on the other hand we have to keep adjusting to the changing situation of our complicated world. God bless all who helped and stayed at the two centres over the past few years!

1 Maccabees 8: Judas had heard about the Romans: how they had conquered many lands and yet acted in a friendly way to other nations. Judas therefore sent representatives to Rome  and an alliance was agreed to with the Romans. Judas' aim was to obtain protection and peace for Israel.
Dear God, may peace and justice be the aim of all leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalm 105: Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples. O sing to him, sing his praise. Tell all his wonderful works. Be proud of his holy name. Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Consider the Lord and his strength. Constantly seek his face. Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past, how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.
Dear God, please help me understand how you have been loving and protecting me since the beginning of my life

Hebrews 12.18 - 13.6: Your ancestors were at Mount Sinai when God spoke to Moses. But you already have one foot in the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, where millions of angels gather in praise. So, continue to live a life of love and hospitality. Keep in mind those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them. Keep your marriage undefiled. Avoid greed. Be content with what you have
Jesus, help me remember heaven....and people in prison

Mark 6.17-29: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded.

1 Maccabees 7:  Some Jews who were disloyal to Judas joined with supporters of the new king, Demetrius, to plot the overthrow of Judas. Nicanor, one of the king's generals, was sent to defeat Judas and exterminate the Jews. But when the battle took place, Nicanor himself died and his army was routed. Once again the land experienced peace for a while

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Hebrews 11.1 - 12.15: Only faith can keep us going. Only faith helped Abraham and other famous people in the Scriptures to keep going. So many of them were weak people who were given strength by God, to be brave when life became difficult. With so many witnesses in a great cloud all around us, we too should keep running in the race we have started. We should get rid of everything that slows us down. Keep focusing on Jesus. He is running beside us. His example going to the cross gives us courage. Try to live at peace with everyone. Don't let any seed of bitterness begin to grown and make trouble. This can poison a whole community

Mark 6.7-13: Jesus went on a teaching tour of the nearby villages. He sent out  his 12 special friends in 6 pairs, with authority over evil spirits. He told them to take only bare essentials for the journey. He said "If any place does not welcome you, as you leave that place shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them". The 12 apostles preached repentance. They cast out many devils. They anointed sick people with oil and healed them

1 Maccabees 5-6: As the years went on, several nearby countries made war on Israel. But Judas and his followers used prayer and courage to defeat all enemies. When King Antiochus heard of Judas' continued victories, he became severely depressed and realized he was dying. The king's son succeeded him and he too sent a huge army against Israel. This army also failed to defeat Judas. The king then made peace with the Jews and for a time there was peace.
Dear God, please help all nations to live in peace

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Listen

Hebrews 10.32-39: Remember all the suffering you experienced after you became  Christians - the insults and violence, the loss of your possessions. Don't give up now. Keep going in your Christian life. You and I are not the sort of people who give up. We are the sort of people who stay faithful until our souls are saved
Jesus, help me keep going, despite difficulties

Mark 6.1-6: Jesus and his disciples went to his home town of Nazareth. On the Sabbath he went to the prayer hall and began teaching. People in the prayer hall were astonished at his teaching. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He is just a carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, Joset, Jude and Simon. His sisters also are here." And they would not accept him. So Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country". Because of their lack of faith, Jesus cured only a few sick people there. He was amazed at the lack of faith in Nazareth.
