Tues June 21
I spent most of yesterday at the desk ... many jobs for prisoners .... as did
our social worker for homeless local people, Simon, as he processed some new
cases .... and as did our social worker for homeless domestic workers, Lucia, as
she responded to new appeals for help (including one woman who has been sleeping
at the airport for 3 weeks! and another woman suddenly evicted yesterday
afternoon from her employer's home)
Last
night at the Dr Jesus Centre I joined Deacon Edwin Ng and Eddie Chan for a
meeting of the St Peter's
Association .....re visiting and helping prisoners, especially with study
courses.

Proverbs
9: Wisdom has built herself a house,
she has erected 7 pillars. She has sent out her maidservants
to proclaim from the city's heights:
"Come and eat my bread,
drink the wine I have prepared. Leave your foolishness and you will live.
Come and walk in the way of wisdom."
Lord, please help us accept
your invitation to grow in wisdom
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
136: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
for his great love is without end. It was his wisdom which made the skies,
for his great love is without end. It was he who made the sun, moon and stars,
for his great love is without end. It was he who rescued and protected his people
Israel,
for his great love is without end. He gives food to all living things,
for his great love is without end. To the God of heaven give thanks,
for his great love is without end.
We praise you, Lord, for your
great love is without end

Peter 5.1-4: To those of you who are elders I say: I am an
elder myself,
a witness to the sufferings of Christ. Be good shepherds of the flock that God has
entrusted to you.
Watch over it, not simply as a duty, or for sordid money,
but gladly, because that's what God wants you to do. Never be a dictator over any group that is in your
charge,
but be an example that the whole flock can follow. When the Chief Shepherd appears,
you will be given the crown of unfading glory
Jesus, help pastors and elders be good
shepherds
Listen

Mark
10.35-45: The brothers James and John were two
of Jesus' disciples.
One day their mother said to Jesus
"When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and
left". Jesus said to his cousins James
and John
"Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and
left". The 10 other disciples were angry
at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all
"In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others.
But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by
serving others, not dominating them,
just as I came not to be served, but to serve,
and to give my life as a ransom for the world"
Jesus, please help me want to
help and serve other people,
not dominate and control them
Listen

Reflection: 1 Peter and Mark have the same message: leaders should be servants, not dictators. This applies to everyone in authority

Proverbs
7-8: To Wisdom say "My sister".
Call Perception your dearest friend. Wisdom says:
"The Lord created me before time began.
I was by his side, delighting him day after day. Happy those who keep my ways.
Happy those who listen to me. Whoever finds me finds life.
I am more precious than silver or gold."
Dear Lord, please help me to be
a friend of Wisdom
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
135: Praise the name of the Lord,
praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he
wills
in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths but they cannot speak.
They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols.
Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and
Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people
who worship idols to know and love you

Peter 4.13-19: If you have a share in the sufferings of
Christ, be glad, because this means you will have an extra share of
happiness in the life to come. It is a blessing for you when they insult you
for being a Christian.
It means you have the Spirit of God resting on you. People who experience suffering for God's
sake, must trust themselves to the grace of the Creator, and keep on doing
good
Jesus, give strength to persecuted
Christians
Listen

Mark
10.28-30: On behalf of all the disciples,
Peter asked Jesus
"What about us? We have left everything to follow you." Jesus replied "You will be
leaders in the church on earth. Anyone who has left home, family
or country for the sake of my name, will receive a 100-fold blessing in
this life,
and will also receive eternal life in Heaven."
Jesus, please bless all Gospel
workers

Reflection: As I look back on my life since arriving in HK, I thank God for the 100-fold blessing by way of new friends, brothers, sisters .... not least the 150 domestic workers helped by MercyHK over the past 4 months!

Genesis
14-15: In
the land of Canaan there were many kings. Sometimes they went to war against
each other. Melchizedek, king of Salem, was also a priest of God. Abraham gave
Melchizedek 10% of all his possessions. Melchizedek gave Abraham bread
and wine. Melchizedek
asked God to give Abraham a special blessing. God said to Abraham, "This
land of Canaan is yours; I give it to you and your descendants."
Dear God, please help all the kings and leaders
in the world to be friends
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
116: I love the Lord
for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I
called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was
helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I
will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How
can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The
cup of salvation I will raise to
thank the Lord. O
precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have
loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Jesus, thank you for the Cup of Salvation that is your Eucharistic Blood

Corinthians 11.20-26: Concerning
the Lord's Supper, this is what I received from the Lord and then taught you: On
the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, broke it and said
"This is my body which
will be broken for you". After supper he took a cup and said "This
cup is the new covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink
it in memory of me". Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you eat
this bread and drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord
Jesus, help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when
Christians celebrate the Eucharist
Recording

Luke
9.10-17: Once after
Jesus had been healing and teaching all afternoon, his disciples said to him
"It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus answered
"They don't need to go. You feed
them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish".
Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There
were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed
the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd.
Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please make leaders do
more to help the starving people of the world
Recording

Reflection: The name of Jesus in Chinese is: 耶稣. The character on the left, 耶, represents ear and refers to listening. The character on the right, 稣, is a combination of two characters. The first one 鱼 means fish, the second one 禾 means grain. Ever since the miracle of multiplication recorded in today's Gospel, bread and fish became the earliest symbols of the Eucharist.

Proverbs
6: Idler, go to the
ant. Ponder her ways
and grow wise.
No one gives her orders, yet she makes sure of her food. Night and day you spend so much time sleeping.
In no time poverty and want will be at your pillow. Avoid deceitful people, those who have leering
lips,
winking eyes, shuffling feet, beckoning fingers. Avoid people with a haughty look
and people who sow dissension. Do not desire the beauty of your neighbour's
wife.
Adultery means trouble and disgrace.
Dear God, please give us the
wisdom
to avoid deceit and dishonesty

recording of this reading

Psalm
134: O come, bless the Lord,
all you who serve the Lord, who stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God. Lift up your hands to heaven
and bless the Lord through the
night. May the Lord bless you from Zion,
he who made both heaven and earth.
Lord, please protect my
family tonight and every night

1 Peter
4.3-5: You spent enough time in the past living a
careless life, behaving indecently, drinking all the time, having wild
parties. Now that you don't do these things
anymore,
people can't understand why you've changed, and they tell lies about you. They will have to answer for this to him who
will judge everyone at the end of their lives
Jesus, rescue young people from wild party life
Listen
Mark
10.17-27: A young man asked Jesus
"Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?" Jesus replied "Keep the commandments:
do not kill; do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother;
care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these
commandments.
What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something
really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the
money to the poor,
then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went
away sad,
because he was very rich.
Jesus then said to his disciples
"It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".
Jesus, please don't let riches
endanger my eternal life

Proverbs 4-5: Acquire wisdom, never forget her.
Do not desert her. She will keep you safe. Wisdom is life to those who obtain her,
health for the entire body. Take no notice of a loose-living woman,
go nowhere near the door of her house. Drink the water of your own cistern,
fresh water from your own well. Find joy with the wife you married in your
youth,
let hers be the love that always holds you captive.
Dear Lord, please give married
people the wisdom to stay faithful to each other
My

Psalm 133: How good and how pleasant it is
when people live in unity. It is like precious oil upon the head,
running down upon the beard. It is like the dew of Hermon

life for ever.

1 Peter
3.8-11: Be agreeable and sympathetic. Love everyone.
Have compassion and be self-effacing. Never pay back one wrong with another, or an
angry word with another one. Instead, pay back with a blessing. Anyone who wants to have a happy life must
banish malice from his tongue; he must avoid evil, do good and seek peace

Mark
9-10: Some people brought their little
children to Jesus.
They hoped Jesus would put his hands on the children and bless them.
Jesus' disciples told the people to go away
and not bother Jesus.
But Jesus said "Don't stop the little children from coming to
me". Then he put his hands on them and blessed them. Jesus also said "Anyone who welcomes one
of these little children in my name, welcomes me. But anyone who causes
scandal to one of these little ones, commits a great
crime"
Jesus, please help all children

For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord.

husbands. If some husbands
are not yet believers, they may find
themselves won over to the Lord, without a word spoken, by the goodness of

style, gold bracelets, expensive clothes - all outside stuff. What matters is what's inside: a sweet and
gentle disposition - that's what God likes. Husbands, be kind and thoughtful to your
wives, respecting them as equals

10.1-12:
One day some religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him
"Is it against the Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?" Jesus replied "God created male and
female, for the two to become united as one body. What God has
united, no one should separate." The religious leaders then asked
"But why did Moses allow divorce?" Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce
because people were so hard of heart. But divorce was not God's
plan. So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their
partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery."
